This isn't a great horror movie but isn't a waste of time either.

City of Dead Men (2014) is currently available for free on Vudu. This storyline involved an American who travels to Colombia to research his family history and runs out of money. A woman finds him and coaxes him into joining a gang that lives in an abandoned physiatric clinic. The gang tells him a tale of children who lived in the clinic while also preaching the importance of living life an inch from death. The American is going to learn how close to death they actually mean. This movie is directed by Kirk Sullivan (The Come Up) in his first major motion picture and the cast includes Diego Boneta (Terminator: Dark Fate), Jackson Rathbone (Twilight) and Maria Mesa (BloodLands). The storyline for this movie is fun and reminded me of a horror version of Point Break. The carefree lifestyle of the gang made them entertaining and the sequences unpredictable. This isn't a great horror movie but isn't a waste of time either. I recommend watching it once and would give it a 5.5/10.

City of Dead Men: Absolute dumpster fire
Platypuschow3 November 2017
Do not be fooled by the ghoulish cover of this horror, it's simply not that interesting.

Revolving around a young homeless American in Colombia who becomes involved with a criminal crowd that lives in an abandoned mental asylum.

It starts interesting enough but quickly descends into a drug addled mess with no redeeming features.

Terrible cinematography, a lifeless cast and a dreadful plot are all that await you in this absolute mess of a feature.

The Good:

Deeply creepy opening scene

The Bad:

Ridiculously bad plot

Poorly made

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

When a CGI stag beetle out acts the cast you know there is a problem

Garbage!
LordCommandar26 December 2016
The films being made today by some studios must have substance abusers as writers and directors. I mean seriously, you have to be on some sort self medicating derivative to produce this type of garbage. From the beginning to the very god awful ending, this was by far one of the worst films I have very burnt my time on, and I've seen some real crap this year alone. The acting made my stomach turn, no one in the film gave any commanding presence, just a bunch of nobody actors making nonsensical points with a script from someone who must've ran away from home, when they were young and put to together a group of substance abusing misfits. Avoid this crap at all cost!

Please Stay Away from this

Warning: Spoilers
The worst movie I have ever seen and I have seen a lot of them. The exotic girl has the worst acting ever. The story of "misfits" and the acts they do does not make sense. I wish I could rate it 0. Better watch some movie again but not this. I just made the IMDb account so that I can rate and warn other people about this movie. So the protagonist beats up some guy in order to fit with the misfits. In the end he gets killed by the same guy when he is about to leave the group. They make him feel that he does not fear death by making him stand in front of fast approaching bikes. The bikes quietly pass by his side and his expression of feeling invincible is totally laughable.

It was okay
joshuagarrettkirkland11 March 2017
I don't know why people are giving this 1/10 ratings. Yeah it wasn't the best movie ever made but it had potential. For a lower budget film it had decent effects and a okay story. The actors weren't the best for sure but it's not as bad as some of these other reviews are making it out to be. It had its ups and downs but overall it was worth it. I've seen a lot worst😂

Running away from the past
Woodyanders14 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Flat out busted broke American tourist Michael (a solid and likeable performance by Diego Boneta) finds himself lost and adrift in Medellin, Columbia while attempting to escape his troubled past. Michael meets the fetching Melody (an appealing portrayal by Maria Mesa), who introduces Michael to a group of misfit youths led by the charismatic Jacob (a mesmerizing turn by Jackson Rathbone) who reside in an old abandoned psychiatric hospital and live life to the limit.

Director Kirk Sullivan relates the compelling story at a constant pace, maintains a grimly serious tone throughout, nicely captures the dark allure of living life on the edge, and makes neat use of the rundown main location. Andrew Poston's thoughtful script makes a pertinent and provocative point about the danger inherent in not being able to let go of the past as well as the potential bitter price one might have to pay for living such a carefree lifestyle. The downbeat ending packs a devastating punch. The sharp widescreen cinematography by Joshua Reis offers a wealth of striking trippy visuals. A cool little film.

Anxiety

Warning: Spoilers
This film had anxiety laden with ecstasy. And had my attention from the opening scene! Not quite a five star movie. But well worth the time used to watch it!

Excellent
flagg-0881826 July 2023
It's a movie that begins adequately with a seemingly average low brow criminal plot that morphs into a very interesting story. The movie's plot revolves around a long abandoned mental hospital with a controversial closing and a protagonist from San Diego searching his unknown origins in Medellín and coming to terms with much more than he bargained for.

If you're a person interested in the esoteric elements relating to the nature of reality then you may just enjoy it. If - on the other hand - you are a "surface level" exoteric type then you will likely feel bored out of your mind. I recommend it.
