In between seasons 3 and 4, Daryl (Norman Reedus) stepped up to lead the prison group. So when Patrick (Vincent Martella) meets Daryl, Greg Nicotero directed the actor that he was "meeting a rock star".
Six weeks before shooting began, fruits and vegetables were planted to turn the prison yard into a farmyard. The work was nearly ruined when a herd of deer got in and fed on the crops.
The pigs escaped during shooting, and Andrew Lincoln immediately ran after them to round them up (according to the audio commentary).
The three questions in the season 3 episode Hounded, are not merely a foreshadowing of the questions Rick asks the Irish woman in woods, but rather are the exact same questions asked by the voices on the phone. This is in fact where Rick directly obtains the questions. These questions also become the shibboleth the entire group uses for the remainder of the series anytime they want to assess whether someone is trustworthy, skilled, stable, or good enough to join their group.
The Big Spot Discount Store in this episode does not exist in real-life. However, the fictional store is based on the actual discount store, "Kuhn's-Big K". Which was a large discount store chain in the Southeastern United States that merged with Wal-Mart in 1981. It once comprised 119 stores.
