Jagera elder, Senator Neville Bonner was the first Indigenous person to be elected to the Senate, he sat in both State and Federal Parliament for over 12 years across four changes of Federal government. Poet Oodgeroo Noonuccal, of the Noonuccal tribe was a woman that could do it all - a poet, conservationist, and political activist. As the first Aboriginal person to be published and as an integral member of the FCAATSI group, her poetic viewpoint and visionary defiance possessed a profound quality still resonating through generations of Australians.
Each rebel shoulders blows to bring lasting change to their communities and all of Australia. Contemporary role model and firebrand activist, Pat O'Shane AM, a Kuku Yalanii woman from the Daintree became the first Aboriginal female teacher in Queensland. She went on to defy the odds becoming Australia's first Aboriginal Magistrate, and one of the most brilliant legal gamechangers this country has ever seen.
While Birri Gubba Gungalu man and media icon, Tiga Bayles has been described as the voice of Aboriginal Australia, driving the establishment of both Radio Redfern in Sydney and Triple A Murri Country Radio in Brisbane, He was also the first chairperson of the NSW Land Council and founder of the Murri School.
The series uncovers what it takes to be a rebel with a cause, exploring a collection of inspirational ideals that these rebels have personally lived by: "Don't hate, educate", "I'm going out with my gloves on", "I'm a token for no person". and "Are you going to be an honourable ancestor?"
