Season Four Review
southdavid7 October 2023
Whilst I've watched every season of "Miracle Workers" I do feel that it's been in decline since the first season finished and I wonder if this fourth season confirms my fears after the third season, that we've had all we're going to get from this series.

In a post-apocalyptic world, a Road Warrior Sid (Daniel Radcliffe) and Gang leader Freya (Geraldine Viswanathan) fall in love and settle down in Boomtown, one of the few remaining townships, with their 'dog' Scraps (Jon Bass). They struggle to adjust to a life without quite so much violence, with Sid getting a job with Mr Rubinstein (Steve Buscemi) in his junkyard and Freya attempting to take over the local housing association. An old friend of Freya's TI-90 (Karan Soni) an assassination droid visits her but is disappointed with the suburban life that she's chosen for herself.

As with the third season, again the whole series is essentially a one joke premise, about how life today compares with this futuristic wasteland. From there the show takes every science fiction trope and puts its own spin on most of them, though most of the heavy lifting is done by the Mad Max franchise and the Terminator series. There are a few more guest stars back for this series, than there were for season three including David Dastmalchian, Paul F Tompkins and a welcome return to the series for Lolly Adefope, as a rogue A. I. intent on finishing off the remains of the human race.

It's all super amiable stuff, with decent performances and it does a good job special effects wise with what I imagine is still a limited budget - it's just has that one remaining fatal flaw that it's not quite funny enough. It's not so bad that I can imagine anyone hating it - but I still can't imagine anyone loving it either, and I wonder if the star power of it's two big name leads will be enough to carry the goodwill to a fifth run, particularly with a writers strike likely putting them behind schedule. I would probably watch a fifth season, just out of habit, but I'd be just as happy for this to end here.

Warning: Spoilers
Miracle Workers usually does a good job of wrapping up the seasons with the finale and penultimate delivering and this was no different.

This season has been a mess, but Lolly returning as the leader of the robots and a chaotic war with some vicious ending was the perfect wrap to it.

This had the feel and aura of a series finale and while I hope that it is not the case, I have made peace that it may be the end. Geraldine has been great, Daniel Radcliffe has been reborn as a comic actor and it has been good for TBS to have a show like this. Maybe they'll surprise us with a fifth season at some point though.
