Writer/director Damien Leone's "Terrifier" duology is about to become a fully-fledged trilogy this October, when "Terrifier 3" will be unleashed into theaters. On paper, three indie horror movies doesn't feel like the backbone of a huge franchise, but the "Terrifier" series, its characters, and iconography have caught on in a big way. To be fair, the vicious and mysterious killer at the center of the saga, Art the Clown, has appeared in a few more films than just the main "Terrifier" trilogy, as his first appearance was in the "Terrifier" short from 2011, leading to a feature-length role in Leone's Halloween anthology "All Hallows' Eve" from 2013.
So when you add all of that up, the creepy, disconcertingly buoyant murderous clown has been around for over a decade now, allowing a plethora of "Terrifier" t-shirts, posters, action figures, and other merchandise to pop up over the years. It certainly...

You know Art the Clown? The friendly neighborhood clown who attends children’s parties and brings smiles to their faces? Yeah, well, that’s not the Art we’re talking about. Art the Clown is the horrifying villain of the Terrifier franchise by Damien Leone, and he will soon appear in the upcoming Terrifier 3 movie, which is set to be released later this year. Today, we have finally received the first image from the movie, showing Art, and information that the release date is coming earlier than initially planned, on October 11, 2024.
The Terrifier franchise is a modern horror franchise, and while it hasn’t (yet) become a proper mainstream title, it has a devoted following and is definitely among the more popular horror franchises of the modern age, which is why fans of the genre and the series as a whole are eagerly awaiting the new movie’s premiere.

Two weeks ago, we learned that production had wrapped on writer/director Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3, which started filming back in February and was, at the time, aiming for an October 25th release date. Now Deadline reports that fans will have the chance to see this supernatural slasher sequel two weeks earlier than expected, as the North American theatrical release date has moved forward to October 11th! Along with the new release date announcement comes the unveiling of an image from the film, and you can check that out at the bottom of this article.
Leone had a budget of around $55,000 to work with on his breakout horror film Terrifier, and a budget of “a little over” $250,000 for Terrifier 2, which was a massive hit when it was released last year, earning $15.1 million at the box office. Since the second film did so well, Terrifier 3 has a substantially higher budget.

Art the Clown is fast-becoming a new slasher icon. Though he's yet to star in a truly massive box office hit, his blood-drenched exploits in "Terrifier 2" went a long way towards building his reputation as the slasher killer of the modern age. Damien Leone, the creator of the franchise and director of the first two installments, has made a name for himself by going further than any Hollywood horror and depicting scenes of such utter depravity that audiences have reportedly struggled not to pass out.
2016's "Terrifier" went largely unnoticed, but is infamous among some horror fans for a scene in which one victim is strung upside down and essentially, shall we say, divided in two in a particularly unfortunate manner. "Terrifier 2" then arrived in 2022 with just as much, if not more ultra-violence, and proved to be almost too brutal for even seasoned horror fans. Despite the film's astonishing level of abject savagery,...

Just a few days ago, we learned that Rob Zombie regular / prolific character actor Daniel Roebuck had joined the cast of Terrifier 3, taking on the role of Santa Claus – and now our friends at Bloody Disgusting have confirmed that production on the film, which started filming back in February, has officially wrapped! After their report, writer/director Damien Leone took to social media to share his thoughts on the production now that it’s all over.
Leone wrote, “And that’s a wrap on Terrifier 3! This was easily the most challenging film of my career and an emotional rollercoaster to say the least! Luckily I was surrounded by the greatest cast & crew who kept me motivated and enthusiastic throughout. Daniel Roebuck has racked up over 250 credits over the course of a career that has lasted nearly 40 years so far, and our friends at Bloody Disgusting have just broken the news that one of his next credits will be on writer/director Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3, which is set to receive a theatrical release on October 25th. According to the site, Roebuck will be appearing in the film as Santa Claus. It seems fitting, because Roebuck was already in Santa mode for a family-friendly movie called Saint Nick of Bethlehem, which he co-wrote and co-directed. That movie will be released later this year as well.
Roebuck provided the following statement: “I’ve been holding this secret for a long time! I’ve been really excited about it. I’m actually entering into the movies that I watch. It’s extraordinary. This is Terrifier bigger, badder, best.“

The behind-the-scenes is hilarious. Can’t wait for you all to see!“

Creator/director of the "Terrifier" series, Damien Leone originally developed Art the Clown as one of many ghoulish antagonists for the short films "The 9th Circle" (2008) and "Terrifier" (2011). The blood-thirsty antagonist, who was inspired by iconic horror killers, then took center stage in 2013's "All Hallows' Eve," wherein two kids and their babysitter discover an unmarked VHS tape that showcased the homicidal clown's gruesome deeds. But it wasn't until 2016 that David Howard Thornton took over the role from the original Art actor, Mike Gianelli, for the first official "Terrifier" movie.
In the film, Art wreaks havoc on Halloween night as he hunts down Tara Heyes (Jenna Kanell) and her sister Victoria (Samantha Scaffidi). Unfortunately, as /Film's Chris Evangelista put it in his "Terrifier 2" review, the first official installment in the "Terrifier" canon was "little more than a plotless, storyless, valueless excuse to showcase gore and not much else." Before he became known as the sicko behind the "Terrifier" franchise, writer, director, and editor, Damien Leone was just a 12-year-old kid studying documentaries about the "Thriller" music video and legendary makeup artist Tom Savini. As Leone told Dread Central, "Those two VHSes were the first time I ever saw makeup artists creating monsters and zombies." He says he watched the behind-the-scenes footage around age eight, and was teaching himself to emulate them by age 12. Decades later, he ended up responsible for the makeup behind one of the creepiest monster designs in recent horror history: Art the Clown.

"Terrifier" is the little slasher series that could. Writer-director Damien Leone harnessed decades of horror movie history to imbue his low-budget breakout with not just heaps of blood and uber-violence, but a subversive sense of whimsy as well. As a result, "Terrifier" remains one of this century's most successful indie horror titles. Its sequel, "Terrifier 2," carved out a success story all its own. In October 2022, that second installment pulled more than $10 million at the domestic box office. For reference, "Terrifier 2" is a two-and-a-half hour long gorefest. That's no chump change for what's arguably the bloodiest slasher movie of the decade.
It all goes back to the original, however, and without "Terrifier," there would be no franchise (including the upcoming Christmas-themed "Terrifier 3"). Damien Leone first conceived of Art the Clown for the 2008 short "The 9th Circle." Art would later appear in one additional short and two anthology segments...

We love Art the Clown, don't we, folks? That black-and-white, blood-drenched menace has worked his way into our hearts via the "Terrifer" franchise, a DIY horror series that's become something of a cultural phenomenon. Art first appeared in the short films "The 9th Circle" and "Terrifier" before starring in a segment in the anthology film "All Hallows' Eve." Then he finally got to take the lead in two feature films, the gory "Terrifier" and the even gorier "Terrifeir 2." And that's just the beginning! Art is set to return in the Christmas-set "Terrifer 3," a film due out sometime in 2024.
And we'll be seeing the film sooner rather than later, according to franchise helmer Damien Leone. Leone sat down (virtually) with /Film's Jacob Hall timed to the November 1, 2023, theatrical re-release of "Terrifier 2," and spoke about why "Terrifier 3" will have a much quicker turnaround time compared to the previous films. In early 2022, a reoccurring, annoying discourse was circulating Horror Twitter: “There are no original horror icons anymore.” In particular, these people were discussing slashers, and how bored they were of the just-about-to-be-released Scream and Ghostface, as well as Michael Myers, off the heels of Halloween Kills, released a few months prior. Fast forward to just over a year later, and this writer is hoping those Tweeters have since eaten their words.

Terrifier 2 has proven to be the independent horror movie that could, grossing over 12 million worldwide. While that may not seem like much compared to billion-dollar blockbusters like Avatar: The Way of Water, it’s important to note that the film was produced for just 250,000. Naturally, Terrifier 3 is a sure thing, and writer/director Damien Leone told Twitter that he’d like to recapture the creepy tone of the original Terrifier short film.

The killer clown trend has amorphous roots, with anthropologists and clinicians failing to settle on where the slow tilt of clowns into full-borne nightmare material originated. It might have been in Ruggero Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci" (riffed amazingly in Seinfeld), or it might be considerably grimmer, inextricably tied to the case of American serial killer John Wayne Gacy. In the modern canon -- whether in film, television, or literature -- the prevailing theory is Stephen King's Pennywise from "It," which popularized the killer clown archetype. Some scholars contend it goes beyond a phobia, becoming something akin to a cultural phenomenon.
Of course, horror audiences remember the Great Clown Panic of 2016, a time when, for some reason, people were dressing up as clowns and running around in the dark. While the reporting then was overblown, there's no denying the killer clown dominates the current age of horror. Yet, audiences might forget these clowns have feelings too.

It's been wild to see the "Terrifier" film series branch out beyond the horror crowd in 2022. The destructive bloody rampage of Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) has been going strong since 2008 with director Damien Leone's short film "The 9th Circle," along with the 2013 horror anthology film "All Hallows' Eve." But once the bodily-spewing headlines of "Terrifier 2" made the rounds, it piqued the curiosity of folks who would have otherwise never seen Leone's gory horror creation.
Art is still a ways off from being a household name like Jason Voorhees or Freddy Krueger, but if he keeps up the pace going into "Terrifier 3," the pantomime slasher stands a good chance of standing alongside them some day. What separates Art from the rest of the pack is his shtick. Imagine if a classic silent movie comedian dressed up in the most terrifying clown makeup imaginable and then started...

The unrated independent horror film Terrifier 2 (read our review Here) has raked in over 8 million at the box office since its initial release on October 6th and is now available to watch on the Screambox streaming service. The fans who have made the film such an unprecedented success have also been so vocal about their opinion that Terrifier 2 deserves Oscar nominations – for the special effects, for lead actor David Howard Thornton, for lead actress Lauren Lavera – that it was even reported on by the Daily Mail. So the folks behind the movie have now officially submitted it for Oscar consideration.

This article contains major spoilers for "Terrifier 2."
When you reflect on the slasher villains we accept as mascots of the genre, it's fascinating to see how far the sinister Art the Clown has come from his indie roots. The pantomime slasher initially started out as a creepy idea in director Damien Leone's 2008 short film "The 9th Circle," and has since become the kind of headline sensation that would make William Castle smile. From anthology antagonist ("All Hallows' Eve") to the star of his own film series, it's safe to say that Art's reign of terror is far from over.
It's pretty astounding how Leone manages to capture the sickening grime of grindhouse horror, where the violence is pushed to an extreme degree. It walks the line between being horrifically gruesome and absurdly funny. Once Art the Clown gets going, he becomes a relentless monster, unlike anything you've ever seen.

Damien Leone's "Terrifier" has become infamous within horror circles for its extreme, no-holds-barred gore. Even by slasher movie standards, the kills are relentlessly brutal, the violence particularly cynical. "Terrifier 2" raises the bar even more, reportedly causing audiences to throw up and pass out in theaters as its main slasher villain Art the Clown chops, maims, and slaughters his way through the whopping 138-minute runtime. However, the sequel also introduces a new component to the story: a genuine protagonist that's supposed to stand tow-to-teeth with Art. Despite the gore fixation, it's this heroine, Sienna Shaw, who Leone was most excited about.
You see, the closest the first "Terrifier" had to a main character was the ordinary party-goer Tara Heyes, but Art killed her before the film's third act in a twist that echoes the death of Janet Leigh's Marion Crane in "Psycho." Even her surviving sister Vicky never truly gets her revenge,...

Set to arrive in theaters tomorrow is Terrifier 2, the ambitious sequel that follows the even more outrageous exploits of Art the Clown as he squares off with the ultimate badass final girl named Sienna (Lauren Lavera). A few weeks back, Daily Dead had the opportunity to chat with Terrifier 2 writer/director Damien Leone, Art the Clown himself—David Howard Thornton—as well as wrestling icon Chris Jericho, who also appears in the sequel (we also interviewed Jericho separately and you can read that Here).
During our conversation with the trio, they discussed coming back for the sequel, wanting to amp things up for the fans, pushing the character of Art the Clown even further, the sequel’s totally bananas special effects, and more.
Damien, you're a madman, creating a slasher that runs for like two hours and 18 minutes. Like, holy shit [laughs]. What I thought was really great about...

Will Art the Clown finally meet his match in Terrifier 2?
From Writer/Director Damien Leone (All Hallows’ Eve), the highly anticipated sequel to the cult-favorite slasher film welcomes David Howard Thornton back as the demonic killer, Art the Clown. Terrifier 2 also introduces Lauren Lavera as Sienna, the teen girl Art targets as fresh prey.
Ahead of Terrifier 2‘s theatrical release on October 6, Lavera spoke with Bloody Disgusting about joining a horror franchise with a devout fanbase, becoming a final girl, and that unforgettable Valkyrie costume.
Lavera had no idea about Art the Clown’s devout fanbase before taking on the role of Sienna. The actor is relieved by that and explains, “What’s funny is that I had heard of Terrifier, but I hadn’t seen it before I auditioned. Like any other job, I got it through my agent and didn’t know much about it.

Art the Clown is a sadistic, mime-like horror villain created by Damien Leone, who first appeared in Leone’s low-budget short film The 9th Circle in 2008 and was creepily brought to life by actor Mike Giannelli. Leone went on to make the anthology feature film All Hallows’ Eve in 2013, which followed Art the Clown as he terrorized a babysitter on Halloween night. Art the Clown came back in Leone’s 2016 film Terrifier bigger, bolder, and bloodier than ever, with David Howard Thornton stepping in to play the character. The film features some of the most creative horror movie deaths ever shown, and by this time Art the Clown had gained a devoted fanbase. Art the Clown is such a compelling character because he’s so different from other clown villains like Pennywise. Art the Clown has a dramatically pointed nose, a black-and-white face, and he never speaks. Leone has once...

Plot: Homicidal maniac Art the Clown returns to ruin another Halloween – and this time he seems destined to clash with a young woman named Sienna, who is celebrating the holiday in an angel warrior costume.
Review: Writer/director Damien Leone has been telling stories that involve his maniacal creation Art the Clown ever since shooting a short film called The 9th Circle back in 2006. A short that ended up being one of the segments in his 2013 anthology film All Hallows’ Eve, which had Art or references to Art dispersed throughout its 83 minute running time. The character really captured the horror community’s heart and imagination when Leone made the 2016 feature Terrifier, a simple slasher that mostly took place in one location and featured Art making a mess of several people over the course of its 84 minutes. Now Art is back in Terrifier 2 – and the fact that Leone has already...

Out for a bit of fun on Halloween night, Art sets his sadistic sights on terrorizing a young girl (Samantha Scaffidi), leaving a pile of bodies in his wake.
