- [Daryl compliments Rick for putting the group first]
- Daryl Dixon: [about the prison when overrun with Walkers] Glad you were in there.
- Rick Grimes: Wasn't much use without my gun.
- Daryl Dixon: No, you were. All this time you've been taking off, you earned it. We wouldn't be here without you.
- Rick Grimes: It was all of us.
- Daryl Dixon: No, it was you first. You gonna help us figure this out?
- Rick Grimes: I screwed up too many times. Those calls you got to make, I start down that road... I almost lost my boy... who he was. Whatever else this place needs, I'm here for it.
- Daryl Dixon: Like I said, you earned it. But for what it's worth, you see mistakes. I see when the shit hits, you're standing there with a shovel.
- [Glenn shows Maggie the photo he took of her while she was sleeping]
- Maggie Greene: Oh, my God. Throw that away.
- Glenn Rhee: Yeah. Not gonna happen. It's mine.
- [as Maggie smiles]
- [first lines]
- Karen: [Karen and Tyreese lay in bed together in their prison cell] What are you thinking about?
- Tyreese Williams: Yesterday. Zach. I can't stop.
- Karen: Yeah, me neither.
- Tyreese Williams: It used to be we all had acquaintances. Just people moving in and out of your life. No big. See them down the road sometime. Now... a handful of people you know, and that's it. They might as well be the only people left in the world.
- [Beth tells Michonne that everybody cares for her]
- Michonne: It was stupid. I was so stupid. When I fell on my ass, they should have just left me out there.
- Beth Greene: Now that's stupid. We care about you.
- Michonne: They could have gotten hurt.
- Beth Greene: When you care about people hurt is kind of part of the package.
- [Rick tells Michonne, Maggie and Carl there's a sickness in the cell block]
- Rick Grimes: Patrick got sick last night. It's some kind of flu. It moves fast. We think he died and attacked the cell block. Look, I know he was your friend and I'm sorry. He was a good kid. We lost a lot of good people. Glenn and your dad are okay, but they were in there. You shouldn't get too close to anyone that might have been exposed, at least for a little while.
- Rick Grimes: [Rick motions for Carl to stay back] Carl. All of you.
- [Glenn finds the pile of dead rats along the fences]
- Sasha Williams: Are you seeing this? Is someone feeding these things?
- [Michonne asks Carl for any requests for her upcoming run]
- Michonne: Any requests? Books? Comics? Some stale M&Ms?
- Carl Grimes: You're the one that likes stale M&Ms.
- Michonne: [Michonne smiles] Then I'll definitely look for some.
- [Carl suggests to Rick that they help with clearing the Walkers around the fence]
- Carl Grimes: They only took out one cluster yesterday. Probably gonna need more people today. Maybe we could help.
- Rick Grimes: I got other plans involving dirt and cucumbers and keeping people fed.
- Carl Grimes: Well, if you don't want to, maybe I could. Could I?
- Rick Grimes: We have other plans. That's what I should have said.
- [the bit Ryan Samuels asks for Carol to look after his two daughters Lizzie and Mika]
- Ryan Samuels: Lizzie and Mika, you care about them. I've seen it. I don't have anybody else. Kids on their own, they don't have a chance. Can you look out for them? Like they're yours?
- Carol Peletier: [Carol with tears in her eyes] Yeah. Yeah, I can. I will.
- [Lizzie sees her father pass away]
- Ryan Samuels: [Ryan looks to Mika] You take care of your sister.
- Lizzie Samuels: Dad. Dad?
- [Mika cries as Ryan Samuels passes away]
- [Mika tries to calm Lizzie down while Carol stabs their father's brain]
- Mika Samuels: Lizzie? Lizzie, it's okay. Breathe. Look at the flowers. Count one, two, three with me. One, two...
- Lizzie Samuels: [Lizzie cries] Daddy, no!
- Mika Samuels: Lizzie, look at the flowers. Count one, two, three with me. One, two, three.
- Carol Peletier: [when Carol stabs the father's brain] Look at the flowers, Lizzie.
- Lizzie Samuels: [Lizzie screams] No!
- Mika Samuels: Look at the flowers!
- [as the two girls cry while holding onto each other]
- [the council discuss what to do with the group members that are showing symptoms]
- Hershel Greene: Is anyone else showing symptoms that we know of?
- Carol Peletier: We can't just wait and see. And there's children. It isn't just the illness. If people die, they become a threat.
- Hershel Greene: We need a place for them to go. They can't stay in D. We can't risk going in there to clean it up.
- Carol Peletier: We can use cell block A.
- Glenn Rhee: Death row? I'm not sure that's much of an upgrade.
- Daryl Dixon: It's clean. That's an upgrade.
- [Daryl asks Carol if she's all right, when she asks him the same thing]
- Daryl Dixon: You all right?
- Carol Peletier: I'm worried about Lizzie and Mika. They were around Patrick.
- Daryl Dixon: We all were. Karen and David are gonna be separated till they feel better.
- Carol Peletier: You're right. Are you okay?
- Daryl Dixon: Mm-hmm. Got to be.
- [Beth asks Michonne if she's seen anything from the infected cell block]
- Beth Greene: Did you see anything?
- Michonne: They just started taking out the dead.
- Beth Greene: I don't need to know who yet. I don't want to.
- [Beth asks Michonne if any kids had gotten infected]
- Beth Greene: Were there any kids?
- Beth Greene: [Michonne remains silent] Got all these widows and orphans, but what do you call someone who lost a child? You'd think someone would have given that a name.
- [Carl asks Rick if the pigs made them sick]
- Carl Grimes: Think the pigs made them sick?
- Rick Grimes: Or we made the pigs sick.
- [last lines]
- Carl Grimes: [Carl tells Rick that Carol's been teaching the kids how to use weapons] Carol's been teaching the kids... how to use weapons. How to kill. Their parents don't know and she doesn't want you to know. I think you should let her. I know you're gonna say it's not up to you. But it can be. Dad?
- Rick Grimes: Thank you for telling me.
- Carl Grimes: Yeah.
- Rick Grimes: I won't stop her. I won't say anything.
- Rick Grimes: [Rick motions for Carl to come over] Carl?
- [as Rick hands Carl a gun]
- [Michonne asks Carl why he doesn't wear his father's police hat anymore]
- Michonne: Why don't you wear your hat anymore?
- Carl Grimes: It's not a farming hat.
- [Rick and the group examine the dead infected Walker]
- Rick Grimes: No bites. No wounds. I think he just died.
- Dr. Caleb Subramanian: Horribly, too. Pleurisy aspiration.
- Hershel Greene: Choked to death on his own blood. Caused those trails down his face.
- Rick Grimes: I've seen them before on a Walker outside the fences.
- Daryl Dixon: I saw them on Patrick, too.
- Dr. Caleb Subramanian: They're from the internal lung pressure building up... like if you shake a soda can and pop the top. Only imagine your eyes, ears, nose, and throat are the top.
- Bob Stookey: It's a sickness from the Walkers?
- Dr. Caleb Subramanian: No, these things happened before they were around. Could be pneumococcal. Most likely an aggressive flu strain.
- [the group questions how the sickness might be spreading]
- Rick Grimes: I had a sick pig, it died quick. Saw a sick boar in the woods.
- Hershel Greene: Pigs and birds. That's how these things spread in the past. We need to do something about those hogs.
- Dr. Caleb Subramanian: Maybe we got lucky. Maybe these two cases are it.
- Bob Stookey: Haven't seen anybody be lucky in a long time. Bugs like to run through close quarters. Doesn't get any closer than this.
- Hershel Greene: All of us in here, we've all been exposed.
- [Carol gives Lizzie the knife to stab her father's brain]
- Carol Peletier: You know what I have to do. What we're always supposed to do. You can wait outside if you want. Okay?
- Lizzie Samuels: We should be the ones.
- Mika Samuels: [Mike cries] No. I can't.
- Carol Peletier: Lizzie, are you sure?
- Lizzie Samuels: You taught us. I can do it.
- Carol Peletier: [Carol walks Lizzie over to her dead father] Okay, well, you have to do it now. You need to do it right now because you have to do it before he turns. I'm gonna stay right here. You remember what I showed you?
- [Lizzie hesitates before stepping back shivering]
- [the council discuss how they all may be infected with the sickness]
- Carol Peletier: Patrick was fine yesterday, and he died overnight. Two people died that quick? We'll have to separate everyone that's been exposed.
- Daryl Dixon: That's everyone in that cell block. That's all of us. Maybe more.
- Hershel Greene: [the council looks around to each other] We know that this sickness can be lethal. We don't know how easily it spreads.
- [Carol tells Lizzie that she's going to prepare to bury her father]
- Carol Peletier: Gonna bury your dad. You can visit, bring him flowers.
- Carol Peletier: [as Lizzie remains silent] Lizzie, we're gonna have to talk about what happened in there. Your daddy asked me to protect you like you're my own and I will.
- [Carol tells Lizzie that she's weak]
- Carol Peletier: It's time someone told you the truth. Honey, you're weak.
- Carol Peletier: [Lizzie sniffles] You lost your nerve. You have to trust your gut and you have to act fast every time. That's life and death.
- Lizzie Samuels: [Lizzie cries] He's dead.
- Carol Peletier: [Carol hugs Lizzie] I know, and I'm sorry. But if you want to live, you have to become strong.
- Lizzie Samuels: He's dead. He's dead. He was special and now he's dead.
- [Lizzie cries over the dead Walker Nick to her sister Mika]
- Lizzie Samuels: [Lizzie looks to Mika] Why'd they kill him? Why'd they kill Nick?
- Mika Samuels: You're so stupid.
- Carol Peletier: Nick?
- Mika Samuels: [Carol looks to Mika] She's messed up. She's not weak.
- [Judith begins to cry uncontrollably next to Michonne]
- Beth Greene: Are you okay?
- Michonne: Does she always cry like that?
- Beth Greene: I think she senses people's moods.
- [as Judith continues to cry uncontrollably]
- [Carol tells Carl that she needs to teach the kids how to survive]
- Carol Peletier: I have to keep teaching those kids to survive. You know that.
- Carl Grimes: Did you tell their parents?
- Carol Peletier: No.
- Carl Grimes: Are you gonna tell them?
- Carol Peletier: If I do, maybe after this they'll understand. But maybe they won't. I don't want to take that risk.
- Carl Grimes: That's between you and them.
- Carol Peletier: No. It's between you and me. If you tell your dad, he'll tell them. And like I said, maybe they'll understand, maybe they won't.
- Carl Grimes: I don't want to lie to my dad.
- Carol Peletier: I'm not asking you to lie. I'm asking you not to say anything.
- [Beth sings a lullaby to Judith]
- Beth Greene: Lying in my bed at night / I don't want to grow up / Nothing ever seems to turn out right / I don't want to grow up / How do you live in a world of fog? / It's always changing things / Makes me wish that I could be a dog / Oh, when I see the price you pay / I don't want to grow up / Nothing ever seems to go my way / I don't want to grow up / Only thing to live for is today
- Michonne: Some lullaby.
- Beth Greene: I just sing her what I like. I figure it's better than ashes or cradles falling out of trees.
- [Beth hands over Judith to Michonne]
- Beth Greene: Can you hold her a second? Please, I'm covered in carrots.
- Michonne: [Michonne snaps back] No.
- Beth Greene: [Judith cries as Beth continues to hand Judith over] Thanks.
- [when Michonne slowly starts to cradle Judith, Michonne cries]
- [Carol tries to tell Lizzie that the dead are Walkers]
- Carol Peletier: Lizzie, those are Walkers. Nick was a Walker. You don't feel bad about that Walker dying. You feel bad about your dad. You loved him and he's gone.
- Lizzie Samuels: Yeah.
