At one point, Justin Long did not show interest in returning to voice Alvin in the fourth installment of the franchise and that he would be replaced by Matthew Lillard. However, Lillard was unavailable because he was busy working on Scooby-Doo projects and after giving it a second thought, Long returned to voice Alvin once again for this film.
The only Alvin and the Chipmunks movie to be all digital, both in picture and in sound. The previous 3 movies had the chipmunks' voices treated via analog audio tape speed changes. "Road Chip" did not use any analog audio recording. All speed and pitch changes were done digitally.
This is the lowest grossing film out of the 4-film "Chipmunk" series and the only one to not earn $100 million or more at the domestic box office. This film made $85.9 million domestically and $234.8 million worldwide. This is likely a result of trying (and failing) to go up against the highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) at the box office, which made more money in one weekend domestically than this film made worldwide in total ($248 million), and went on to make over $2 billion and become the 5th highest grossing film of all time.
