Chicago – How does a native Australian actress become a New Jersey hip hop artist? Practice, practice, practice… in formulating the character of “Patti Cake$.” Danielle Macdonald, who had never rapped before in her life, portrayed the title Jersey Girl with a stellar determination, poignancy and heart.
“Patti Cake$” features Danielle as that title character, that of a bartender with a talent for hip hop rhymes, and her friends Jheri (Sid Dhananjay) and Bob (Mamoudou Athie), who want to help her record those beats. Patti’s home life is difficult, as her mother Barb (Bridget Everett) is depressed and unstable, plus her beloved grandmother (Cathy Moriarty) is fighting a homebound illness. But Patti will not be stopped, despite her weight, the odds and her obsession with rapper O-z (Sahr Ngaujah). The film was written and directed by Geremy Jasper, making his debut as a feature filmmaker.

According to Deadline, screenwriters Alisha Brophy and Scott Miles have been hired by 20th Century Fox to develop a female-led remake of the 1988 Corey Haim/Feldman comedy License To Drive. The original movie is about a teenager who fails his driving test, but he takes his dad’s prized Cadillac for a joyride anyway in an attempt to impress his girlfriend (played by Heather Graham). Being an ‘80s comedy about teens, things go pretty poorly from there, and everybody has wild adventures where they learn about life and love. Weirdly, the Deadline story says that this remake is “being described as the female version of Superbad,” even though it’s already literally the female version of License To Drive.
Brophy and Miles have previously been attached to write the adaptation of White Girl Problems, so they’re clearly a go-to team these days for comedies like this.

Exclusive: In a competitive situation, Tom Rothman’s TriStar has acquired the rights to Dirty Rush, the scathing comic novel that S&S division Gallery Books publishes this month. Brownstone Productions’ Elizabeth Banks & Max Handelman will produce what is being called Mean Girls in a sorority house. Banks & Handelman produced Pitch Perfect.
Dirty Rush was written by Taylor Bell, a pseudonym for Tanner Cohen and David Oliver Cohen, co-creators of the bestselling White Girl Problems. The book includes a foreward by real-life sorority girl Rebecca Martinson, the former Delta Gamma sister whose scathing email verbally assaulting her entire chapter went viral last year. That intensity and absurdity defines the spirit of the film that Rothman has in mind.
Banks & Handelman have completed Pitch Perfect 2, which Banks directed and which Universal has set for release May 15. Brownstone was recently staked to a two-year first-look production pact with Universal. Nicole Brown will oversee this for TriStar.

Looks like it was a perfect pitch for the producers of the Pitch Perfect pics. Elizabeth Banks and hubby Max Handelman’s Brownstone Productions have signed a two-year, first-look with Universal, the studio said today. And the timing is pretty good as Banks’ directorial debut and Universal-released Pitch Perfect 2 hits the big screen on May 15, 2015.
“Universal has keenly understood the unique Pitch Perfect brand, and we are excited to now extend that brand to projects beyond the Pitch franchise,” said Banks and Handelman in a statement Thursday after the announcement by Universal co-presidents of production Peter Cramer and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum. “The studio has been a phenomenal creative partner and we look forward to continuing our relationship with Jeff Shell, Donna Langley, Jimmy Horowitz, Peter Cramer, Jeff Kirschenbaum and the whole Universal team.”
