Amusing romance movie with super powers
KineticSeoul21 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
A low budget superhero romance movie that is actually endearing and highly watchable. Maybe it's the awkward interactions dealing with a awkward superhero, but I enjoyed watching the characters and the direction of this low budget movie. So the plot is about a postman that gains super powers after getting hit by a meteor. But the thing is, the guy is super socially awkward but a very likable and friendly guy. So the movie is about him dealing with his average daily life despite him being super awkward and having super powers. The thing is, socially awkward people or people that have trouble interacting with someone they really like or people that are a bit of a introvert will probably find the character Bob to be relatable. He is far from being the suave, cool and charming Batman/James Bond type of hero. Despite the awkward comedic elements that is the main driving force of this movie. Where you can have the looks or the money or the most genuine and good intentions, but just has a difficult time with the woman or the man you have a big liking to. If your an audience member that just wants to see some superhero action, you will leave disappointed. They just didn't have the budget for that. But if you want a movie with likable protagonist and endearing awkward humor you might enjoy this one. This movie sort of reminded me of the movie "Hancock" in some ways, but I liked this one more. Despite the limited budget and the very short running time. It's actually a enjoyable independent film that is worth a watch.

Lovely little film
alex_van_beek15 November 2015
I put off watching this film for so long because of all the negative reviews on here but I've just finished watching it and felt compelled to log on here and tell you all just how much I enjoyed it and don't listen to all the negative reviews. I don't know what those people were expecting, maybe they prefer those awful Marvel Avengers films instead, in which case, I have no empathy with such people because I hated those.

This is a nice little film with no huge budget, it didn't need one, it doesn't rely on effects and its not really a superhero film in that way. It's just a nice understated feel good film about a hopeless dullard who just happens to be the world's only superhero. I laughed or chuckled out loud more than three times and had plenty of moments were it just made me smile. It had a few familiar faces, the lead was recognisable to me from the series 'Derek', which I have to point out how much I hated that show so as not to tarnish the quality of my opinion. I enjoy everything Ricky Gervais has ever done with the exception of that show, Extras and the Office were amazing but Derek is the worst ordeal I've ever voluntarily put myself through. Sorry to go through that in more detail than was probably necessary, but yeah, the lead guy had a small role in that and this film is good and I recommend you see it.

Really dire but mercifully short
retrogeezer26 October 2015
I had high hopes for this film and really *wanted* it to be good. But within the first 15 minutes I knew I was in trouble.

The storyline is all over the place, the characters are terrible, and it's generally an awkward film to watch.

The script reminded me of a high school production. Maybe it was mostly ad-libbed. Or maybe they spent all the budget on Catherine Tate and so couldn't afford a Script Editor.

How bad is it? I actually think "Condorman" (1981) is a better film on a similar subject. That's how bad!

"SuperBob" is not "Shaun of the Dead". It's not "Monty Python". And it's certainly not "hilarious".

But at least it's only 82 minutes long.

Not epic nor aggressive. Touching and funny.
retonho26 October 2015
After watching the trailer I thought this was going to be the typical crap with all the cool shots in the trailer. The second statement is true. The first one isn't.

I'm a regular rater and this is probably my first review. I feel the urge to write a positive review because this is the first time I've seen something different in a while. And it's also an independent production. It needs to be known. Superbob rocks.

This is what Hancock wished to be. This movie has a real plot and real characters. For punches watch a DC/Marvel one. For story watch this. It's a simple one, very heartfelt and enjoyable.

I Love Your Face
NoMoreRunnin14 January 2022
Finally had an opportunity to enjoy this film! (Special thanks to The Divine Ms. Jayde's review on Films To Be Buried With for hyping it up)

Brett Goldstein is great as the good hearted and subtly lonely hero which is likely exactly how a regular guy hit by a meteor and turned superhero would be.

Catherine Tate as the hard nosed boss never fails to deliver dry humored one liners. (A stark contrast from Donna Noble but still a pleasure to watch)

I laughed, I had a little cry, I got the warm and fuzzies. Goldstein could literally read the back of a crisps bag and I'd probably find it fascinating. Cannot say enough about how much I treasure that man and his creativity.

If you're here for Roy Kent, you aren't going to find him. But you will find a somewhat gooey centered man who can fly. What's not to like? Watch this film!

Unoriginal uninspired and "super" underwhelmed.
lurpak6 January 2019
If you cast your mind back to the 1970s we had spoofs like super gran, bananaman and super kid.

They were primarily aimed at eight year olds, where actual comedy was replaced with clumsy foolishness in a step which was the one above slapstick. Comedy, like technology evolves, and while we look back at these things with a nostalgic reverence, we often find that trying to reproduce that type of innocence in a world where society is more adult...it just fails, always.

I'm so disappointed as I love most of the cast, especially Catherine Tate. So when I saw this listed on Amazon Prime, I jumped at the chance to watch it. I wondered how I had never heard of it? That reason was quickly was revealed, the promoters probably watched its final cut and went...".lets play this one down, lets not spend any more on advertising...we've wasted enough money."

The Superbob character is depicted as a bit of a failing man, one with no personality. I think one of the "jokes" was when someone who had encountered him describes her disappointing experience, she says "he's a bit of a dullard". Which could possibly be the greatest achievement in this film, as they portrayed the main character as a dullard so well, so accurately...that the film was unwatchabley dull. I had to turn it off. 30 minutes of my life that on my death bead I will cry....please...in the name that is all just, at least give me those 30 minutes back!

It has one joke...the 70sesq concept of a useless superhero...and then they just show that as a sequence of events in the already grotesqly overdone documentary format.

There's sections of the bible with more up to date material than this.

It's quite unlike the Hollywood superhero flicks... charmingly British..
ParAviatOrator13 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
If you are expecting typical superhero flick laden with special effects, one in which the protagonist is cocksure of himself and knows what to do, says smart one-liners and saves the day... then this isn't the flick you would enjoy... Maybe that's why this one has got such a low score on IMDb. For me, it was a perfectly paced love story, which happens to fall in superhero genre.

It's a slower paced rom-com which might not be suitable for everyone's palate. The ending is sweet, and does not preach any message (good over evil etc etc) but is more about finding love, and working up the courage to admit it.While an extremely polite superhero who gets lorded over by everyone, even an old lady might not make you admire him, but the way his politeness earns him goodwill as a dividend in the end makes you reconsider your opinion.

All in all, a sweet short movie which deserves much better ratings than it currently holds... and maybe, a sequel.

Good natured, but neither as fu ny nor as sharp as it could have been
neil-47610 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A meteorite strikes postman Bob on Peckhan Common, imbuing him with superpowers. Bob is likeable and good-hearted. He is also not the sharpest tool in the toolbox, nor is he over-blessed with social awareness. This feeds into a number of parallel sub-plots: Bob is dominated by his government spook controller, the USA is miffed that the UK has a superhero and they don't, and Bob's largely unsuccessful love life looks as if it's about to get a boost care of hottie June.

Although Bob has superpowers, this is not a superhero movie - don't look for more than occasional special effects. This is, instead, a comedy of manners in which controller Catherine Tate, housemate Natalie Tena, potential girlfriend Laura Haddock, and Bob's mum in residential carry much of the weight, as does the framing device of Bob featuring in a documentary about his life. Co-writer Brett Goldstein is Bob, and conveys slightly dim decency very sympathetically.

This is amusing without being especially funny. This is mildly satirical without being especially sharp. This is mildly targetted towards superhero movies without being especially barbed. This is lightly romantic without being especially heartwarming. In short this film is a good idea which never quite achieves on the level it should have.

Maybe good for Brett Goldstein fans
sophiejune-942644 May 2023
It seems from the other reviews that fans of Brett Goldstein enjoyed this film. I don't know him, so for me it was okay not great. I am a fan of other British comedies and romcoms like Run, Fat Boy, Run. But this movie for me was a bit boring. From watching the trailer it didn't seem to me that the whole movie was going to be in this reality TV, documentary style. That was the first turn off for me, I think if they'd just done it as a normal movie it might have been more interesting but that mockumentary style is so over done. 2nd for me was the Bob character, yes he's an everyman kind of guy but he isn't a sympathetic character just pathetic. He's also annoying especially that high pitched voice. I could hardly stand to listen to him through the whole movie. There's nothing to empathize with or relate to for me. I kept waiting for him to win me over and it never happened. I think if there was someone like Richard Ayoade in that role it would have been different, he's got a weird voice and he's geeky but he's easy to empathize with. I usually enjoy watching Catherine Tate but I feel like she was underused and her talents wasted in the film. But if you're looking for a romcom that is a little different you might enjoy this movie.

Disappointed!
skehoe-3985519 December 2018
I hadn't heard about this film until the other night. I had high hopes of a great cinematic journey! It was like watching a film when my Dog accidentally hits the slow motion button! To be honest, I hate when people give bad reviews. They explain the music score, costume validity or cinematography. When I've enjoyed the film personally. However I tried my best to stay focused 😳KiKi left the room and being ill, accidentally messed in the hallway. I went to clean it up and was actually more interested in that than movie. Staring at a pile of dog pooh was more interesting. This is a very harsh review to be honest. It is a true story though and I'm not a film critic.

REALLY dull, lackluster movie, of mostly various people bickering. I couldn't get into the story because of it. I'm sure there are better, similar films out there.

SuperBob
Prismark1026 August 2021
SuperBob is a mockumentary of a day in the life of a postman in Peckham who was transformed into a superhero when struck by a meteorite.

Bob Kenner (Brett Goldstein) now works for the Ministry of Defence as a superhero and finds saving lives is a bureaucratic nightmare.

The Americans are jealous that Bob is British and wants him labelled as a weapon of mass destruction.

Bob though feels like a loser. He is a loner looking for love despite being able to fly and save lives.

He fancies the local librarian June (Laura Haddock) but ends up getting together with his acerbic Columbian maid Doris (Natalia Tena.) She is in Britain to earn enough money to build an orphanage back in Columbia.

This is a low budget film with too much obvious attempt to have quirky British humour. It fails to soar because it does not have much of a plot, it is also not really funny.

Catherine Tate is irritating as Bob's boss in the Ministry of Defence. Brett Goldstein who also co-wrote the script comes across as too flat in the lead role. He just seemed wrong in the lead role. I have seen him in a sitcom called Uncle where he was lot better as the rival boyfriend.

A Touching, Charming, Funny Romantic Film that Ingeniously Downplays its Superhero Tropes
DareDevilKid22 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Reviewed by: Dare Devil Kid (DDK)

Rating: 3.9/5 stars

The dull side of being a superhero is sublimely and at times even touchingly explored in this independent British rom-com about Bob, a government-sanctioned caped savior who uses his day off to go out on a date. Adapted from writer/director Jon Drever's terrifically cute and pithy 2009 short film of the same name, this charming and amusing expansion follows meteorically transformed Bob Kenner as he struggles on his real quest of true love while clocking in at UK's Ministry of Defense where his invincible flying powers are in bureaucratic demand.

Opting for a low-key approach, "SuperBob" wins you over with a funny script rather than elaborate action scenes. Co-writer/star Brett Goldstein is likable in the lead - a timid everyman overwhelmed by what has happened to him, hilariously bemused as he deals with endless world-saving situations and resentful local residents. Amid the laughs there is also an appealing charm to Bob's clumsy quest for love, as well as some clever satire of the sillier side on world politics, personified by co-star Catherine Tate (most notable as one of "Doctor Who's" companions down the years) as Bob's highly strung government superior. Natalia Tena, Ruth Sheen, and Laura Haddock also provide solidly entertaining support.

By keeping the lid on the special effects that would be laughed at by the head honchos of Marvel Studios, and focusing instead on a low- key story of the world's most powerful man on his day off, Jon Drever and Brett Goldstein's movie almost taps into the same reserves of warmth and heart and wicked humor that made one of Britain's best feature films, "Shaun of the Dead", soar to amazing heights (the slightly drab beginning notwithstanding). Drever milks the banality for laughs and unexpected sweetness, playing it to the films strengths - one scene in particular, set in a nursing home, may be the most romantic in a superhero flick since Superman took Lois Lane for a night-time flight around Metropolis. Working within its low budget limitations without ever feeling cheap, "SuperBob" is a light but impressively effective love story blended against the backdrop of some brilliantly subtle satire, offering something uniquely refreshing in the superhero genre where almost everything has been explored.

SuperBoring...
paul_haakonsen2 January 2021
I hadn't heard about the 2015 British comedy titled "SuperBob" prior to sitting down to watch it. But I was expecting it to be a funny movie at least, especially since British comedy tends to be something I enjoy.

Well, I managed to endure a staggering and mind-numbingly 30 minutes into the ordeal that is known as "SuperBob" and I gave up. Nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing of any interest had happened in that time. And the storyline was so mundane and pointless that it was hard to keep watching it and have an active interest in the movie. And little did it help that the characters were simply pointless and unappealing.

I don't know what writer and director Jon Drever was attempting to accomplish with this 2015 movie, but it utterly failed to captivate my interest, much less prove any entertainment for me.

This was a massive swing and a miss, and I know for a fact that I am not going to be returning to give "SuperBob" a second chance. This movie was just not anything remotely within the scope of my humor or interest.

My rating of the movie is a generous two out of ten stars, based solely on the production value of the movie.

Annoying and Terrible
RoboGarrett23 April 2020
I'm very annoyed by this movie because the premise is actually good but they completely dropped the ball every step of the way.

The lead actor is not remotely funny and in fact is annoying to have to watch and listen to. He's not believable or likable.

The story is stupid with a bunch of talking heads delivering bad jokes. There's tons of dialogue but none of it is ever funny and it's seldom even remotely interesting.

There's a couple charming moments but overall this is a much too long, sappy story with a very predictable ending. We didn't enjoy this one at all.

A waste of time for Catherine Tate.

astroscopesuk-296026 March 2024
Sorry but this film needed a great deal of improvement, it started very slow, and my son and i lost interest not even half way into it. I felt it was very poorly made, and looked very low budget , even though Catherine Tate was in it. My son and I watch loads of movies, and we both feel this was another in the category of not much of a story line, and very poor humour. For this film to even be considered a comedy , it needs much more thought and better characters. We felt that it was a bit of an insult to the actors, and the story line is totally ridiculous. We both watched well over half the film with not so much of a smile . Sorry to say this but i don't thin k this one will stand the time test .

The realest superhero story I have ever seen.

A beautiful love story told without being too soppy or wet. A fun super hero story told without big set pieces. A film that goes from laugh out loud funny to genuinely heartbreaking in a beat. Wonderfully stuff.

Great Take on Superhero Life
rich-stryker13 November 2015
This is such a funny movie. This is the British take on Hancock. I will definitely recommend this movie to others.

The idea of a mild-manner postman becoming a superhero and taking all of his personality flaws with him makes for a great story. Normally we think that with the extra powers confidence will come along with it but that is not the case for Bob. Bob can't even get a date and he is the personal jar opener for a unionized security guard charged to protect Bob's life.

The "girl-friend" is stereotypical "Colombian" but she balances the "loser" persona of Bob.

Cute and funny a must see movie for the flip side of Marvel and DC characters.

Great British Comedy
brucemiddlemissphotography25 November 2018
A really quaint comedy. Brett Goldstein is so watchable. I recently saw him doing stand up in London and he was excellent so was really pleased to see he had the lead in a film.

A heads up for those wanting a marvel/dc actioner this is not it.

The characters, even those with one lines are just brilliant and there is a real warmth and feeling to the film. It reminded me in essence of Hunt for the Wilderpeople. A comedy that doesn't try too hard for laughs and as such achieves even more authentic ones.

Leaves you with a smile on your face.

I just can't believe this didn't get more attention or a wider initial release.

Strangely enough Brett was in "Derek" on the BBC and this does have a similar balance of humour, sentimentality (and I mean that in a positive way) and good natural acting.

Well done
