Okinawa Festival Prizes
Taiwanese feature “The Mimicry” was named best picture at the first edition of the Cinema at Sea – Okinawa Pan-Pacific International Film Festival. The festival ran Nov. 23-29 in Okinawa, Japan.
The fantasy-drama film is adapted from a short story by Kao Yi-Feng and directed by Chung Yu Lin. “The film employs a magical yet realistic style, vividly portraying apartment stories by utilizing anthropomorphic techniques that mirror the protagonist’s observations,” said a jury headed by Iran’s Amir Naderi.
The festival’s biggest winner was “Abang Adik,” directed by Malaysia’s Jin Ong, which collected three prizes. It won the audience award, the jury award, and the best leading performance award, which went to actor Wu Kang-Ran. (Wu won the same prize last weekend at the Golden Horse Film Awards.)
The American documentary “One With the Whale,” directed by Jim Wickens and Pete Chelkowski, also received a jury award.

Prolific Filipino filmmaker Brillante Ma Mendoza steps into the boxing ring with the heartfelt if rather thin drama “Gensan Punch.” Inspired by the true story of Naozumi Tsuchiyama, an amputee who was denied a license to box professionally in Japan and traveled to the Philippines in pursuit of his dreams, “Gensan” lands solid punches for the rights of disabled athletes and excels with its depiction of rigorous training and fierce combat. But we learn very little about the fighter’s life when he’s not wearing gloves. Following its world premiere at Busan, where it shared the Kim Ji-seok Award with Aparna Sen’s “The Rapist”, and its November screening in Tokyo, “Gensan Punch” will launch online as an HBO Asia Original.
With his chiseled features and steely gaze, handsome model-turned-action star Shogen (“Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist”) certainly looks the part as Nao, a boxer from Okinawa who has been...

“Gensan Punch,” the upcoming film by celebrated Filipino director Brillante Mendoza, has been set as an HBO Asia Original movie. It will become available on regional streaming service HBO Go in the next few months.
Ahead of that, the film will have its world premiere next month at the Busan International Film Festival, and follow that with an out-of-competition gala selection at November’s Tokyo International Film Festival. In Busan, it appears in the Window on Asian Cinema” section and is also one of seven Asian films nominated for the festival’s Kim Jiseok Award.
The Japan and Philippines coproduction film is a fact-based story about a Japanese man with a prosthetic leg who seeks to become a professional boxer. He did his training in the so-called Gensan Quarter of General Santos City, which has long been known for producing athletes, including former champion boxer and current presidential candidate Manny Pacquiao.

After launching round one of their Street Fighter web series online, a group of fighting game fans is planning to bring round two to TV screens. Production company Entertainment One is working with the Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist team, led by creator Joey Ansah, on a TV series that will be adapt the most famous installment of the Street Fighter video game franchise.
After premiere a well-received fan film called Street Fighter: Legacy in 2010, Ansah and his team landed a deal to create Assassin's Fist, which ultimately reeled in millions of views after it arrived on the Machinima network in 2014. The series received extensive praise for its exciting action sequences, its dark visuals, and its faithfulness to its source material.
Later in 2014, news circulated that a sequel to Assassin's Fist would be developed, with the World Warrior tournament as its focus. That event is at the center of the 1991 game Street Fighter II,...

Justin Lin is a busy guy. Since leaving the Fast and Furious franchise (which he basically saved from a future of direct-to-dvd sequels and turned into one of the world's most bankable film series), he's directed Star Trek Beyond and lined up tons of other opportunities, ranging from Space Jam 2 with LeBron James to a Hot Wheels movie for Legendary. Now he's adding one more project to his plate: a digital series reboot of the 1980s TV series Knight Rider.
We received a press release explaining how Lin is teaming up with Machinima, his company Yomyomf, and NBCUniversal to bring this project to life. He'll produce the digital series with Yomyomf, and it's intended to launch sometime in 2017. Machinima's CEO said this in a statement:
"Knight Rider is an iconic franchise whose concepts of AI and autonomous vehicles were science fiction in the 1980s and are now science fact.

Jean-Paul Ly And Law Plancel Echo Hong Kong Action Greatness In Colin Emerson's 2015 Short, Dead End
The last three years have proven very exciting for me in covering independent action cinema. The internet is full of gems from many directors of shortfilms and once such person would be filmmaker Colin Emerson who has done at least two pieces last year that I know of with UK-based stunt and screenfighting talents, Jean-Paul Ly (Lucy, Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist) and Law Plancel (Green Street Hooligans: Underground, Ben-Hur). The two launched their own independent film group under their Jp/LP Action Design banner with the Emerson's Fall 2015 shortfilm, Dead End, the story of two friends in a deal that ultimately goes South, exposing one of them as an undercover cop. The shortfilm itself isn't a big-scale piece, but the drama is doable enough to...

The man who worked on a number of Machinima's most prominent original series has moved on to a new gig. Jeremy Azevedo, who spent nearly five years as the gaming network and served as its creative director of original programming, will join Discovery Digital Networks (Ddn) as the head of its La-based production operations. The report of Azevedo's departure from Machinima comes from TheVideoInk, which cited "multiple industry sources." During his time at the gaming network, Azevedo oversaw production for several high-profile series, including Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist and BatInTheSun's Super Power Beat Down. He also created the Machinima Interactive Film Festival and developed several verticals for the network, including its newsworthy Etc channel and its animation-focused Happy Hour channel. Those two hubs now have more than 1.5 million subscribers between them. Azevedo will work in a newly-formed role out of Ddn's Los Angeles office. According to the report, his role...

Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist started life as a YouTube series, but director, writer and star Joey Ansah is now releasing the online hit in a feature length cut which hits DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray steelbook on October 27th. The movie was made in association with Capcom USA and blends top notch martial arts with an authentic adaptation of the iconic Street Fighter franchise. Ansah gained recognition for his role in The Bourne Ultimatum, and as well as playing fan-favourite character Akuma in this movie, he's joined by Mike Moh as Ryu, Christian Howard as Ken and Akira Koieyama (47 Ronin) as martial arts teacher, Gouken. I recently had the chance to talk with Joey over the phone about Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist, as well as which other comic book and video games he would like to adapt and his thoughts on a faithful take on the X-Men in the near future.

Now, housing information company Movoto Real Estate has conducted a study that has gone more specific in its analysis. It has taken a look at the most torrented movies, TV shows and video games by each state in the United States of America.
The study sticks to the continental U.S. so doesn't include Alaska or Hawaii. It was conducted over forty days and covers four million 'seed nodes', three million unique IP address and hundreds of titles. They have since published a map of the single most popular film, show and game by state.

Capcom's best brawlers are coming back to Machinima. The video game developer known for Street Fighter has announced Street Fighter: World Warrior, a sequel to the Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist web series. Assassin's Fist, which debuted in May after spending nearly two years in development, served as a far cry from the Street Fighter adaptations of the 90s. Assassin's Fist featured a dark, serious style, and creator Joey Ansah chose to go with a prequel plotline instead of setting his series at the titular tournament. The result was a success. The eleven episodes in Assassin's Fist have all been viewed more than 750,000 times, with the most popular installment accruing nearly three million views to date. World Warrior will maintain its predecessor's gritty style while addressing Assassin's Fist lack of familiar faces. Beyond protagonists Ryu and Ken, Assassin's Fist featured just one other character from the Street Fighter games--Akuma. This time,...

Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist is here. The fan web series based off of Capcom's classic series of fighting games has debuted on Machinima, where the first season is now available in its entirety. Assassin's Fist is a Street Fighter prequel that takes place during the formative years of close friends and protagonists Ken and Ryu. In the first episode, they train alongside their master, Goken. The series is based off a fan film created by Joey Ansah, who is also the creative force behind Assassin's Fist (and co-stars as Akuma). Through Machinima, Ansah will be able to easily reach his target audience. The first season of Assassin's Fist consists of 12 episodes (plus a prologue). Its similarities to Mortal Kombat: Legacy have been noted, though Assassin's Fist features a slower pace and a lot more character development.

Some of the most legendary fighters in video game history are set to duke it out once again. On May 23rd, Machinima will release the entire first season of Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist, an action web series set in the Street Fighter universe. Assassin's Fist began back in 2010 when creator Joey Ansah debuted Street Fighter: Legacy, a well-received fan film based on the franchise. After gaining Capcom's seal of approval but failing to crowdfund the money he needed to make his web series a reality, Ansah brought Assassin's Fist to Machinima, where its official trailer is now live. Machinima fans will recognize the many commonalities between Assassin's Fist and Kevin Tancharoen's successful Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series. Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist is coming to Machinima. The live-action adaptation of the popular fighting game will be released through the main channel of YouTube's top gaming network. Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist has a lot of web video history behind it. It began as Street Fighter: Legacy, a 2010 fan film that has received nearly five million views to date. In September 2012, Capcom gave Legacy creator Joey Ansah its blessing, and he began developing Assassin's Fist as a full-fledged web series, with some help from the video game publisher. Thus began a long campaign to pick up enough funding without sacrificing creative integrity. In April 2013, during the height of the Kickstarter craze, Ansah launched a crowdfunding campaign searching for close to $1 million. After failing to gain much traction, he shelved the campaign, and he finds his series attached to Machinima year later. Machinima was the always the best fit for Assassin's Fist.

There's a web series based on Capcom's Street Fighter games coming out this year. Here's a handsome poster to remind us...
Capcom's hit videogame series Street Fighter hasn't exactly had the most classy track record on the silver screen. The 1994 film, which starred Jead-Claude Van Damme in his action star pomp alongside Kylie Minogue and Raul Julia, was the kind of amiably daft film we always seem to find while sleepily flicking through the TV channels after the pub's closed. The 2009 film Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li wasn't terribly good, but it did have the benefit of having Michael Clarke Duncan in the role of Balrog.
The web series Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist, although very much a low-budget labour of love, promises to do a better job of rendering the games' characters in flesh-and-blood form. It arrives on the back of the success of Street Fighter: Legacy,...
