Last month, on the night Real Estate released their sixth album, Daniel, they filled a tiny Williamsburg bar with all kinds of Daniel-themed props: name tags with the name “Daniel” on them, pictures of celebrities named Daniel, a full Danny Devito cutout. The album name had started as kind of a joke; they thought it would be funny to give the record a human name, and it just so happened that they’d recorded this new slate of songs in Nashville with producer Daniel Tashian, known for his work with Kacey Musgraves.

If you’re lucky enough to live in New York, Film Forum is mounting a 20-film Ken Loach retrospective on April 19 after his latest — and quite possibly last — film, Cannes 2023 entry “The Old Oak” starts rolling out on April 5. The British director carries the distinction of being one of nine filmmakers (among them Francis Ford Coppola and Ruben Östlund) to win the Palme d’Or twice: for the Irish history “The Wind That Shakes the Barley” (2006), starring Cillian Murphy, and healthcare drama “I, Daniel Blake” (2016).
Both times, the Competition juries were powerless to resist the films’ emotional pull.
And resistance is futile. That’s because Loach knows how to move us. His movies hit a nerve because they dig into believable characters inspired by real people and informed by current events.
Loach and his long-time screenwriter Paul Laverty do not rip stories out of the headlines so much as they...

In a room full of people named Daniel, what will it take to be crowned the ultimate Daniel? In the case of Real Estate, who hosted the album release show for their latest studio album Daniel in Brooklyn, having a single member in the band named Daniel wasn’t necessary. At the show, which was only open to people with some variation of the name — Danny, Danielle, Danimals Yogurt — Real Estate opened and closed their set with their rendition of Elton John’s 1973 single “Daniel.”

Indie rockers Real Estate have shared “Haunted World,” the latest offering from their upcoming sixth album Daniel. Stream it below.
Though vocalist Martin Courtney claims that “This haunted world is killing me” in the song, it’s as breezy and ever. With a warm acoustic guitar and a chord change that illuminates the end of each musical phrase, “Haunted World” seems to be at peace with the anxiety Courtney depicts. “There is no rest, there is no sleep/ The day becomes the night,” he sings, referencing the existential toll of everyday life.
Real Estate previewed Daniel last November with lead single “Water Underground.” The album, which is dedicated to producer Daniel Tashian, will be the group’s first LP since 2020’s The Main Thing.
Real Estate have also announced a “Daniel-Only” album release show at Union Pool in New York on February 22nd. Admission is free with a Rsp for anyone who has a “first,...
