Trigger Warning(s): Scenes of Torture & Violence against Women
In this episode we watch as Olivia tries to secure freedom for her mother, even as Eli and Charlie are hot on her tail. While this happens though, Huck is dealing with Quinn in a way which reminds you of how mentally sick he is, as well as why he is such an asset as a gladiator. Lastly, we have Sally. She is all ready to possibly become the first female president, and even pushes aside Cyrus' threat, but the episode ends with her having quite the accident.
Plot Analysis
With this episode we get to see Cyrus pay for his little off-handed comment about Fitz and Mellie's relationship, since James mentally tortures Cyrus with the deed he did. The funny part is though, he then thinks he is going to divorce Cyrus and keep the kid. Mind you, Cyrus is the type who crosses his T's and dots his I's so what would make James think he could break this man's heart and get away without a scratch? After all, outside of Eli, who has done more underhanded things than Cyrus?
But, what about Sally amongst all this? Well, she has told Fitz she is leaving him, especially in light of Congresswoman Marcus dropping out, so she sees herself as the next president, but this comes with a slight sacrifice. First off, she has to change her position on abortion, but outside of that things seemed like clear sailing. Heck, even with Cyrus' threat of exposing her husband, she shrugged it off, knowing he won't screw himself and her over. However, the episode ends with her staring down a seemingly murdered Daniel, possibly at her hands.
Leading us to talk about our favorite murderer: Huck. We last saw him with Quinn in, what I assume, is her apartment. As of this episode though, Quinn is now naked, and tied up with tape and now the subject of Huck's recent indiscretion of torture and this is probably his most sickening session. Being that he knows Quinn, he seems to get more pleasure out of it, and even licks her face. Then, for the method of torture, he goes for her teeth, but then seemingly makes a deal so that Quinn becomes a double-agent. Something of which, perhaps, may not be as needed as seemed.
Thus far, we have been told Eli is the villain in the whole "you kidnapped my mother!" situation. However, noting the madness of Maya, who would chew to an artery in her wrist, perhaps she isn't as innocent as it seems. Through flashbacks we note Maya's conversation with a supposed reporter over the phone before her trip to London. Thing is, she uses the name Marie when talking with this man and seemingly Maya may not be her actual name. Leading us to wonder if, as she said, maybe she was trying to whistle blow on Eli, or perhaps something more sinister is up. Either way, Olivia has sent her on her way and she seems to be on the path to freedom.
Criticism
Perhaps the only thing worth criticism when it comes to the episode is what Abby noted. Olivia did not see her mother for 22 years, and yet was treating her as just another client held out at arm's reach. Which is strange since Olivia really doesn't have one healthy relationship in her life, and her mother was probably the last one, outside that senator. Also, I didn't fully get why Huck used the traditional torture method on Quinn. Never mind his undying loyalty to Olivia, but you'd think he would have gave her time to explain herself before stripping her, taping her up, and then going for her teeth.
Lastly, I am just wondering what month are we in when it comes to the show? Are we in the current month, in the future, or what? And the reason I ask this is because Fitz's election seems like it has been a long time coming and with candidates popping up and then being dismissed, I am just wondering when will a real, potentially long-term, political threat will come up? Marcus was a good one, then dropped out due to a silly storyline; Sally seems out; and now the only one left is the guy Fitz had to have "assistance" to beat.
Overall
I liked the episode, for the most part. But I must admit, I would like to really see the political part of the show strengthened and, while I love the character development such as what seems to be on the horizon for Harrison, I do miss seeing one episode clients. Still, it is hard to deny that the quality of the recent episodes aren't magnificent. However, nothing can be perfect.
