A wonderful cast that understands the wonderful script and the scenario that accompanies the wonderful song selection. The movie doesn't promise much. It's not a blockbuster anyway. The film expertly tells a small story. Which is why I like little stories of little people. Lucas Jade Zumann will write his name in the 21st century.

Whitman Quirks

It's too quirky for its own good...trying to weave finding his sister in with a new love interest and advice from a bird - this movie is all over the place. What could be touching is so schmaltzy that it loses its bite altogether.
Too quirky

Strange melange of coming of age, literature and film references and applied psychology

You can tell from the get go that this film is made from a book and that who made the film is from New York. It's the perfect blend of introspection and neurosis. Nicely acted, touching at the same time the weird and wonderful perspective on life that young people have, full of feeling and confusion, and the reality of one's existence. Yes, it ends predictably with the young'un reaching maturity, but it also celebrates youth, with all of its idiosyncrasies. The references to classic literature were kept at a minimum, while the occasional foray into different movie styles was just a one time gimmick and less something to distract from the story.
Bottom line: good film, fresh take, a bit slow and not by any means perfect, but better than what I've seen lately.

Could this film and its focus be more timely?

Dr Bird's Advice for Sad Poets is a film that provides the escapism and cinematic delight we are all craving and need at a particularly poignant time. It is a playful and beautiful filmic feast of a gloriously shot movie...... but it is a lot more than that. Could there be a more relevant time to shine a light and encourage discourse on the mental well-being, the loneliness, the disconnection any young person can experience purely by virtue of being a teenager but how about in a pandemic? I'm pretty sure the makers of this little gem could not have foreseen that they would release this film amidst a global pandemic of displaced and disconnected young people. There just could not be a more relevant time to watch this movie and to discuss mental health, particularly of our young people. So take a flight of fantasy and escape your Groundhog Day existence in a way that only wonderful, touching, exquisite cinema allows us to. Dr Bird's Advice for Sad Poets has something to tell us at the exact time we need to hear it and it does it so whilst captivating us with this charming and unique little movie. Delightful.
That ending. Wow

Warning: Spoilers
There aren't a lot of films like Dr. Bird's Advice for Sad Poets, but there are even less that have endings like it. I think most filmmakers feel an obligation to fit into the expectations of their viewers, but DBA almost always did the opposite. I often found myself thinking, "this isn't allowed", at every turn. This wasn't necessarily a bad thing, more so just unfamiliar territory.
The world in this movie doesn't exist, by a long shot, and yet the literal feelings of James and all of the other characters are very real. Although surrealism seemed to be the main avenue for telling the story, that didn't stop it from taking itself seriously, especially as it neared its end.
I initially left feeling heartbroken because most films give their audience the courtesy of leaving them feeling fulfilled, but since DBA gave that element of escapism for much of it's running time, it only made sense they would bring you back with a message of reality, a wake up call of sorts by its end.
The reality that for most of us, who we are around other people/for other people isn't necessarily who we are, because we don't even know who we really are. And even though things don't always go our way at any given moment, we can't hold others nor ourselves back because of it. We have to continue living and just allow it to be apart of us without letting it define us, so hopefully one day, we can get to a point where we're happy with "who" we are.
An excellent film about an important topic.

Our understanding of mental health issues and how we address them says something about our society. We need to take mental health conditions more seriously. This well-made movie is a perfect starting place for the conversations we must have if we are going to make a difference in the lives of people who struggle with mental health related challenges.
A visual delight

This film was like a breath of fresh air. the premise was simple and the characters were beautiful. no one was made out to be the villain. easily one of the most memorable movies I've watched to date. now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go place an order for Walt Whitman's works :-)
A beautiful representation

This is a beautiful representation of a current and relevant concern in the current climate. This film has been needed and fills a large gap in the industry currently. Beautifully presented with characters I really felt I could relate to. I loved this and will be adding it to my most watched so I can enjoy it again and again.
