Following her mainstage set at FloydFest last weekend, in front of a raucous crowd of thousands, singer-songwriter Morgan Wade takes a seat on a couch backstage. Between sips of coffee, a slight grin emerges on her face when asked what the performance meant to her.
“I grew up about three miles from here,” the 27-year-old “Wilder Days” singer tells Rolling Stone, “so I was able to get my dad to drop me off today, which was really nice.”
For Wade, FloydFest is all but where she entered the big time.

“Thank you for this work that’s just so magic and so worth it,” expressed Mary-Louise Parker when she accepted the Tony Award from presenter Gwyneth Paltrow in 2001 for her unforgettable performance in “Proof.” This year, Parker competes for the same prize for starring in the first Broadway production of Paula Vogel’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play “How I Learned to Drive” and could take home the third trophy of her career for it. Below, see a list of all five of Mary-Louise Parker’s Tony nominations and two wins.

Bryan Adams rose to fame and success as a rock everyman. Even when he was No 1 in the UK for 16 weeks with “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You”, the clip that Top of the Pops showed over and over again featured Adams looking less like a rock star than a man who’s realised he has to pop back to B&Q for some more creosote. In the Eighties, when being a gruff-voiced man of the people from North America (Adams is Canadian) was a desirable trait in a rock star, he became enormous – his 1984 album Reckless sold five million copies in the US alone – but he never seemed to be a rock star. He was big; he just didn’t project it.
The irony is that Adams is not and was not an everyman. His life was not and is not like yours. He was an army brat as a kid,...

Morgan Wade mixes the King of Rock & Roll with a little Electric Light Orchestra on a new cover of the evergreen “Suspicious Minds.” The track appears as one of six new songs on her LP Reckless (Deluxe Edition) that was released Friday.
Like many of Wade’s original songs, there’s a less-is-more approach to the arrangement. There’s no intro — it opens straight into the first verse, where Wade’s singular voice is accompanied by muted guitar, sustained piano notes, and a four-on-the-floor kick drum. The song ramps up...

If you're currently watching Cobra Kai season three, you might be surprised at actually feeling empathy toward the usually despicable John Kreese, played by none other than The Karate Kid alum Martin Kove. This season, Kreese's backstory is finally explored, allowing us to dive into the reasons for his downright evil ways. Fans of Kurt Russell are in for a treat with 2015, as the actor has already starred in one blockbuster hit this year, with two more films on the way.
The trailer for the first of the two, Bone Tomahawk, has now been released. The film marks the directorial debut of cinematographer S. Craig Zahler, who also wrote the screenplay for the film. Russell is joined onscreen by Matthew Fox, Patrick Wilson, Richard Jenkins, David Arquette, Geno Segers, and Sean Young.
The film’s synopsis is as follows.
Four men set out in the Wild West to rescue a group of captives from cannibalistic cave dwellers.
This marks one of two westerns that Russell will appear in this year following his appearance in Furious 7, the other one being The Hateful Eight, which will mark his reunion with Quentin Tarantino. This film also marks Wilson’s third big screen appearance this year,...

The plight of the over-privileged is becoming one of The most insufferable dramatic tools of today’s current cinematic landscape, and if this year’s The Runner didn’t satiate your appetite for sex-obsessed politicians, Mora Stephens’ Zipper brings more of the same. What’s a political thriller without a bit of secret canoodling, right?
The problem with Zipper is that there’s very little reason for yet another happy family man to turn into some sadistic, objectifying sex-fiend, and even less motivation when considering the defaming implications that could come out of any guilty admittance. But apparently this is what makes lawyers and politicians who they are – sleaziness, dishonesty, abuse, and a need to bang anything that stands on two legs. At this point, it seems less like a poor decision and more like a job qualification, according to Hollywood.

There is some good news. Sony Pictures Classics' "Grandma" expanded well and IFC's German import "Phoenix" is building strong word-of-mouth success. But overall business is off. Last year's equivalent late-August weekend boasted six specialized films grossing over $500,000 in their later weeks. This year had none. And no new openings topped a $10,000 per theater average. Four more Sundance 2015 films opened this week. Only Brazil's "The Second Mother" (Oscilloscope) hit theaters alone, with three other entries ("Z for Zachariah," "Turbo Kid" and "Zipper") going into parallel video on demand release. Of the roughly 50 films released so far from the Park City lineup, 20 (40%) have been multi-platform (a handful went out one or two weeks after their theatrical openings). "Zipper" (Alchemy) with Patrick Wilson did around $8,000 in 17 theaters. Radius/Weinstein's Danish "When Animals Dream,"...

The Ballad of Franks and Beans: Stephens’ Dips Toes and Other Bits into Political Scandal
It is still very much a man’s world, or so the expectedly corrupt judicial landscape seems to be sighing as it unrolls before our eyes with near clinical precision and predictability in Mora Stephens’ sophomore feature Zipper. Another politically minded effort, her first feature in a decade since 2005’s Democrat/Republican ideals face-off Conventioneers, this thriller skirts in and out of issue concerning addiction and the abuse of power without really delving into either beyond superficialities. Featuring a notable, comely cast and co-written by Stephens’ spouse Joel Viertel, there’s a dark cynicism managing to rear its face from time to time, but given we’re never surprised or endeared towards this group of slow-to-strike piranhas, this scandal sheet is a tale as old as time.

“Zipper” is a borderline unmarketable anomaly that exists right in the middle of two completely separate narrative approaches. Get rid of the swearing and the graphic sex scenes, add a Christian element to the protagonist, and you got yourself one of those faith-based morality tales about how much sex addiction and the man of the house cavorting with prostitutes can destroy lives and demolish the core concept of the nuclear family. Or, leave the moralizing behind; embrace the sleaze factor of the stylized story about a good-looking politician hooking up with a series of expensive escorts and we end up with one of those '90s-style erotic thrillers that straddle the fine line between classy erotica and soft-core porn. In this form, “Zipper” ends up as a competently executed but muddled experience, a cinematic oddity that wants to preach as much as it feels the need to titillate. “Zipper” tells...

Sam Ellis (Patrick Wilson) is a high-powered lawyer with the U.S. Attorney’s office who is on a fast track to a higher political office. He has a loving wife (Lena Headey) and young son, the admiration of his colleagues, and the interest of a Washington power-broker (Richard Dreyfuss). In fact, Sam has everything going his way in life. But something is not quite right with Sam. There is a disconnect going on in the seemingly comfortable relationship with his wife, and Sam is turning to other sexual outlets to relieve the tension of his stressful job and super-powered future.
When a routine interview with a witness on a case turns out to be with a high-end escort, things begin to change for Sam. No longer satisfied with masturbating to internet porn, Sam makes contact with an escort service and starts having regular sexual encounters, with a new woman every time.

Resolutely striving to satisfy both your personal and professional desires and needs, no matter how drastically they contradict each other, can be a strenuous challenge that not everyone has the audacity to pursue. But ruthless attorneys and politicians are often believed to have the fierce personality to relentlessly seek their goals, no matter what consequences they’re forced to face as a result. Those conflicting ambitions are intriguingly examined in the new political drama, ‘Zipper,’ which is set to be released in select theaters and On Demand on Friday. Director Mora Stephens reunited with her husband, Joel Viertel, after they penned the script for the 2005 comedy, ‘Conventioneers,’ to once again [ Read More ]

Patrick Wilson's bid for political power is threatened by his voracious sexual appetite in the trailer for Zipper.
The upcoming political drama casts Fargo's Wilson as popular Southern prosecutor Sam Ellis, whose Congressional bid could put him on the fast track to greatness.
There are only two problems – Sam has a compulsive desire to sleep with high-priced call girls and a dangerous fascination with a young intern (Dianna Agron).
Zipper is produced by Academy Award-nominated Black Swan filmmaker Darren Aronofsky.
Among the supporting cast members who have a hand in Sam's rise and fall are Lena Headey, John Cho, Ray Winstone and Richard Dreyfuss.
Zipper bows on August 28 in Us cinemas. A UK release is yet to be set.

The Sundance Film Festival has, over the course of its run, become a ripe place for films to get attention even without explicitly winning awards. One such film in the 2015 incarnation of the festival was Zipper. The second feature from director Mora Stephens was also co-written by Stephens, alongside Joel Viertel. The synopsis is as follows.
Sam Ellis is a man on the rise – a federal prosecutor on the cusp of a bright political future. But what was meant to be a one-time experience with a high-end escort instead turns into a growing addiction. His moral compass unraveling, his new demon threatens to destroy his life, family and career.
Patrick Wilson stars as the lead character, with a supporting cast that includes Lena Headey, Dianna Agron, Ray Winstone, John Cho, and Richard Dreyfuss. The film is set to be released in American theatres and VOD on August 28th, and it now has a trailer.

In what promises to be a gripping study of power and addiction, Patrick Wilson takes the lead in Zipper as a universally loved politician on a seemingly non-stop rise to the top. But he finds everything falling down around him as his ‘zipper problem’, i.e. his nasty habit of sleeping with scores of women who are not his wife (Lena Heady), catches up with him. Really, Wilson is perfect for the lead role. Not only does he a great actor, he has the sort of charisma that demands all eyes are on him, as well as the chops to delve into the darker parts of his character. On top of that, he his surrounded by a stellar cast, including Heady, Richard Dreyfuss, and Ray Winstone, which all adds up to an absolutely fascinating political trailer. Released: 28th August...

"I set out to help people, I never said I was better than them..." Alchemy has debuted the trailer for the sex thriller Zipper, which dramatizes the sexual urges of a man on the cusp of a bright future. Patrick Wilson stars as a politician on the rise who ends up losing everything "due to his inability to fight off his obsessive temptation for other women." This is a thriller because they really play up the angle of "look how deadly this can be to your life!" with all the endless infidelity. The cast also includes Lena Headey, Dianna Agron, Alexandra Breckenridge, Richard Dreyfuss, John Cho and Ray Winstone. This looks interesting, but at the same time I'd kind of rather just go back and watch Joe Carnahan's Stretch again. Give it a watch. Here's the first official trailer for Mora Stephens' Zipper, in high def on Apple...

From "Nymphomaniac" to "Shame" to "Men, Women & Children" and now to "Zipper," filmmakers of late have been obsessed with characters who are obsessed with sex. You'd think politicians would've learned by now to keep their pants on. And yet, in this new "Zipper" trailer, Patrick Wilson's political career starts to come undone because he can't do that.
Wilson's Sam Ellis is a prosecutor running for office who has it all - gorgeous wife (Lena Headey), cute kids, and a bright future in politics. Except he's got a "zipper problem," as his advisor (Richard Dreyfuss) dubs it.
Watch the trailer.
Wilson is perfectly cast as a charming, good-looking, seemingly good guy who's got the clean-cut image that campaign managers drool over. But then he gets involved with high-class escorts, and his dreams threaten to go down the drain. Headey also looks to give a great performance as his ambitious wife, who won't let him ruin his chances without a fight.
"Zipper" hits theaters and On Demand August 28.

Read More: Meet the 2015 Sundance Filmmakers #53: Mora Stephens Wants to Start a Conversation About Political Scandals with 'Zipper' Mora Stephens' provocative political drama "Zipper" is gearing up for its nationwide release. The star-studded film, headlined by Patrick Wilson and featuring Lena Headey and Richard Dreyfuss in supporting roles, premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival before Alchemy acquired the film for North American distribution. Cargo Entertainment and Radiant Films International have entered into a multi-faceted, strategic partnership to expand their combined production, finance and sales capabilities for commercial feature films. This alliance was recently announced by Cargo’s CEO and Managing Partner, Marina Grasic, and Jan Korbelin Managing Partner and Radiant’s President and CEO, Mimi Steinbauer.
Cargo Entertainment is an international sales agent, distributor, producer and packager of filmed entertainment, while Radiant Films International is an international sales company funded through private equity sources which acquires and distributes theatrical feature films. Their similar visions and business capabilities make this partnership a logical move towards mutual growth.
As the first step in their new collaboration, Cargo has made an investment in Radiant with Steinbauer assuming the additional role of Cargo’s President of Distribution. Steinbauer and the sales team which includes newly appointed Radiant Senior Vice President John Short, will handle foreign sales for all Cargo titles under the newly formed partnership with immediate effect.
With a focus on combining their respective areas of expertise to build a slate of high quality commercial films, Cargo and Radiant are actively looking to jointly finance, produce and launch 4 to 6 new films per year.
The companies will work side by side on joint initiatives but continue to operate as two separate entities. Radiant Films International has a dynamic slate of titles being sold at Cannes including the newly announced romantic comedy "Carrie Pilby" starring Hailee Steinfeld and Tom Wilkinson.
“Mimi is one of the savviest sales executives in the business with a proven track record balancing sales on specialty as well as high profile commercial films such as "The Hurt Locker," "Blue Valentine," "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy and "The Matrix." The strength of her experience make her a perfect partner as we look to substantially increase the scope of our productions. It’s a great partnership and we look forward to making a number of significant announcements to take us to that next level shortly,” said Cargo’s CEO and Managing Partner, Marina Grasic.
“Marina and Cargo have built a reputation for producing high quality theatrical films that resonate with buyers across the globe. As they build on that reputation and expand their production operations with even bigger budget films, we are delighted to be partnering with Cargo. We look forward to this being just the beginning of a long and successful relationship,” said Steinbauer.
Cargo’s current completed titles include the comedy "Welcome to Me," which had the highest grossing per screen average among limited releases at the U.S. box office opening weekend and stars Kristen Wiig who produces alongside Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Aaron L. Gilbert, Jessica Elbaum and Cargo’s Grasic. Their other titles include the political thriller "Zipper" which world-premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and stars Patrick Wilson and Dianna Agron from executive producer Darren Aronofosky. U.S. distributor Alchemy is releasing both films and will distribute "Zipper" later in the year.
Cargo’s upcoming films include the suspense thriller "The Price" with Noomi Rapace, currently in pre-production.
Additional titles on Radiant’s slate include the thriller "Take Down" directed by Jim Gillespie and starring Ed Westwick, Jeremy Sumpter, Phoebe Tonkin and Sebastian Koch and the unconventional romance "The Driftless Area" starring Zooey Deschanel and Anton Yelchin which made its world-premiere at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival. Both films are making their market screening premieres at the Cannes Film Market. Their other titles include two films coming to U.S. theatres in June: IFC Films’ "Hungry Hearts" starring Adam Driver and Alba Rohrwacher who both won Coppa Volpi Awards at the Venice Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival selection "Madame Bovary" starring Mia Wasikowska, Ezra Miller and Paul Giamatti to be released by Alchemy.
Other projects include "Dare to Be Wild" starring Emma Greenwell (“Shameless”) and Tom Hughes (BBC2’s “The Game”) and "Whatever Makes You Happy" in pre-production, set to star Susan Sarandon.

Richard Dreyfuss doesn't need to play any reindeer games. An Oscar winner and one of the world's biggest movie stars for two decades, Dreyfuss has only periodically popped up on the big or small screens in recent years because he's been concentrating his efforts on overhauling the way American children are taught civics and serving as Senior Associate Member of St. Anthony's College in Oxford. While his recent credits have been sparse, I've talked to Dreyfuss several times in the past few years and the key is always to find what he wants to discuss, even if it isn't necessarily the project he's promoting. So with the 2012 A&E adaptation of "Coma," it certainly wasn't "Coma," but it could have been the shift in interactions between actors and directors over the years and whether or not TV is more actor-friendly. With this winter's Sundance debut of "Zipper," it was the political backdrop to the thriller.

What if America never planted its flag on the moon? What if it was all one big con? That's the premise of "Moonwalkers," an action-comedy just picked up by Alchemy today for North American distribution following its debut at SXSW. "'Moonwalkers' is a wildly imaginative, one-of-a-kind action movie," Alchemy CEO Bill Lee said in a statement. "Antoine Bardou-Jacquet has crafted something truly original that we look forward to bringing to a wide audience." In the film, Perlman plays a CIA agent who teams up with Grint's character — a rock band manager — to help Stanley Kubrick pull off the elaborate trick of convincing Americans Nasa really did land on the moon. Formerly known as Millennium Entertainment, Alchemy is rebranding itself as a distributor of quality, independent cinema. Lee also acquired "Zipper" at this year's Sundance Film Festival, starring Patrick Wilson and Ray Winstone. "I'm very happy that 'Moonwalkers' will...

Just as sex scandals are pretty much as old as politics themselves, as long as we've had films, we've had cinematic depictions of sex scandals, usually serious and sometimes comedic. Whether filmmakers have had to be coy about the nature of the scandals -- see "The Best Man" or "Advise and Consent" -- or whether filmmakers have been able to directly tear sex scandals from the headlines -- see "Primary Colors" -- the ground has been fertile. Fortunately -- Unfortunately? -- sex scandals just keep coming along and we keep lapping them up, from Eliot Spitzer to John Edwards to Anthony Weiner. Bringing the genre to Sundance this year was "Zipper," a largely straight-faced approach to a plausibly finger-on-the-pulse topic, which falls flat because of a middle act in which the drama spirals into dated addiction craziness. When it's a political thriller, "Zipper" is respectably acted and presented and has some merit.

Mora Stephens (centered) with the cast of ‘Zipper’.
Zipper, the second feature by writer/director Mora Stephens, is a dark political thriller about an attorney whose political ambitions are put at risk due to his “zipper problem” (aka a taste for high-end escorts). When we first meet Sam Ellis (Patrick Wilson), he’s a family man with good intentions, who is able to resist the temptations of the firm’s intern (Dianna Agron). But as his campaign manager (Richard Dreyfuss) and loving wife (Lena Heady) encourage him to run for district attorney, he finds himself in a downward spiral that may threaten everything he’s worked for. By telling the story through Sam’s eyes, Stephens makes no apologies for this charcter’s behavior but tries to give a bit of understanding as to how one might fall down this rabbit hole. At the festival, we sat down with director Mora Stephens,...

Michael C here to look at a trio of dark films that premiered at Sundance. What would Sundance be without some downbeat character studies? Every festival gets its share of films charting the process by which self-destructive people make a shambles of their lives. Some of them are utterly engrossing and have the audience hanging on the protagonist's every move. Many of them are a chore, dragging the audience through fifty variations of misery to no clear purpose. The type of film where you tip your hat to the artistry and to the gumption it took to get it made, while silently resolving that you never need subject yourself to that again.

Park City. We're so accustomed to politicians getting caught up in embarrassing sex scandals that it's tempting (or darned near inevitable) to compare Patrick Wilson's character in the Sundance drama "Zipper" to any of several real life kerfuffles. Chatting with the newly minted "Fargo" star on a balcony scenically overlooking Park City's Main Street, I asked Wilson if any of those famous examples informed his character here. "No, because I didn't want it to be 'Oh, it's the Eliot Spitzer story' or 'Oh, it's John Edwards,' because sadly, those are the few that we know about and I'm sure that there are many, many, many more," Wilson said, though he noted that his character's Southern accent will make Edwards comparisons easier. As he discusses in our interview, Wilson wanted his "Zipper" character to be more of a portrait of addiction, but not an obvious one. "What I didn't...

Zipper is a dark political thriller that examines the tendency of men in power to succumb to their more base desires. The film is a return of sorts for writer/director Mora Stephens whose last film Conventioneers was back in 2005.
Produced by Darren Aronofsky, Zipper has Patrick Wilson as a rising-star attorney who finds himself tempted to stray from his marriage to his wife (Lena Headey) by a seductive intern (Dianna Agron). To quell this overt office affair, he instead looks to internet escort services to make a more “transactional” relationship with these women.
