Last week, Barbarian (watch it Here) writer/director Zach Cregger secured an eight figure deal to make his next genre project – something called Weapons – for New Line Cinema. Weapons will be produced by BoulderLight Pictures, the same company that was behind Barbarian… and soon after news of the Cregger deal came to the surface, it has also been announced that BoulderLight Pictures has signed on a first look deal with New Line Cinema. As part of this deal, BoulderLight will develop high-concept, filmmaker-driven genre stories for New Line.
The Hollywood Reporter offers some background on BoulderLight. The company was founded by J.D. Lifshitz, 30, and Raphael Margules, 31. The two men, who are observant Orthodox Jews who met at Hebrew school (they don’t work on The Sabbath), bonded over their love of horror (Lifshitz was an avid reader of Fangoria and saw Scream 3 in theaters at the age of 7). Over the last decade, us genre fans have been blessed by the second phase in genre veteran Barbara Crampton’s career that has seen her tackle a wide array of roles in projects like You’re Next, We Are Still Here, Sun Choke, Beyond the Gates, Channel Zero, Road Games, Into the Dark: Culture Shock, and many more. Beyond that, Crampton has also stepped into the role of producer on several films and even contributes to Fangoria with her insightful column as well.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Crampton about her latest role in Sacrifice, a Norweigan cult thriller where she plays the leader of a cult who has plans for an unassuming couple that arrive in the area, unaware of the danger lurking at every turn. During our interview with Barbara, she discussed her involvement with Sacrifice, taking on a Norweigan accent for her role in the film,...

Following in the footsteps of the likes of David Cronenberg, German filmmaker Norbert Keil unleashes his own brand of body-horror on unsuspecting audiences with Replace – a Bathoryesque tale of a beautiful young woman, Kira, who is afflicted with a disease that rapidly ages her skin. After seeking the advice of a dermatologist she discovers she can replace her skin with that of other girls, so of course she abducts and kills a potential donor. But when the disease returns, she is forced to find more victims and soon becomes the target of a police investigation.

Barbara Crampton has a special place in the hearts of genre fans, particularly those who came of age in the 1980’s video shop era. Making her name in horror classic Re-Animator, she worked steadily throughout that decade and the next in a number of similar cult genre titles.
She has recently enjoyed somewhat of a career renaissance after cropping up in the movies of a new generation of filmmaker who revered her work from those decades before, including the likes of Adam Wingard and Rob Zombie. She also gave a brief yet delicious turn in last year’s Beyond the Gates (a must see for 90’s fantasy-horror aficionados). Her ascent looks set to continue after a recent, meatier role as a deeply unconventional self-help therapist in the dark and enigmatic psychological thriller Sun Choke, which makes it’s streaming debut on Shudder from 9th March.

2016 has been an exceptional all-around year for horror and sci-fi films—from the indie realm, we’ve been gifted with an enormous amount of brilliant cinematic stories throughout the past 12 months, and we even saw studios step up their game with an almost unprecedented amount of quality releases.
And along with this wealth of top-notch entertainment, we also saw an incredible number of fantastic female characters over the course of 2016—some heroic, some villainous, but all endlessly engaging in their own right. With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to celebrate some of my favorite female performers from this year who gave us complex, interesting, and wholly compelling reasons to keep falling in love with genre cinema all over again (and again).

You've got to watch this trailer for a fun looking throwback horror thriller called Beyond the Gates. I wasn't really sure what to make of this film when I first started watching the trailer, and then it got to a point where the main characters start playing a VHS-type board game in which they have to play to save their missing father's soul. That's the concept that grabbed my attention, and I love the whole VHS throwback vibe of it. It looks like it will be an entertaining flick! You can read Ben's review of it here. This is the synopsis:
The movie stars Graham Skipper (Almost Human) and Chase Williamson (John Dies at the End) as "two estranged brothers who reunite to sift through the contents of their missing dad’s VHS rental store. Among the inventory, they discover an interactive Vcr board game, which their father viewed just before he vanished.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit the interwebs. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Cloverfield (Matt Reeves)
Science-fiction films don’t get much more immersive than Cloverfield, Matt Reeves‘ thrilling feature debut, putting us directly into the shoes of an alien invasion. One of the rare cases in which intriguing, tight-lipped marketing actually delivered on its promise, this sci-fi found-footage thriller has memorable setpieces at every turn, complete with a sense of genuine panic, a feeling that other post-9/11 films often render as exploitative.

Something happened to Janie (Sarah Hagan). Something bad. This cataclysmic event — wherein quick flashes of screams by the pool mixing with bloody red liquid screens of abstraction are all we ever see — has led her to an agreed upon house arrest. Cared for by long-time nanny Irma (Barbara Crampton), this young woman must fulfill psychological tests with colored pencils and flowers, engage in yoga centering techniques, and consume a regimented series of medication. Every day she gets better. Every day she’s more like herself. Even Irma appears satisfied with the progress, talking to her father abroad about how it may be time to let her back out into the world. But this is the world that consumed her once. It doesn’t take long to threaten doing so again.

While watching Sun Choke, most of my time was spent searching for some deeper meaning. It’s an obvious character piece about mental breakdowns and imprisoned healing, but I kept digging for hidden messages amongst all the holistic babbling. But as the film winded down, and tensions reached a boil, it became obvious that everyone was fighting for one constant theme – control.
A deranged woman struggles to control her violent outbursts, a homely caretaker attempts to control her unpredictable patient, and then said patient goes rogue when she cannot suppress her inner-actions anymore. Bad things happen, power shifts, and we witness an ever-changing dynamic between three clashing personalities – everything Ben Cresciman intends to play out, with no overwhelming backstory.
Sarah Hagan stars as a disturbed young woman (Margo or Janie, depending on who she’s talking to, but really Janie), who finds herself under the care of an older therapist/mentor (Irma,...

Sarah Hagan has had two memorably substantial roles in her career thus far—both on television, and both over a decade ago. She was the rigorously prim mathlete Millie on Freaks And Geeks, and played Amanda, one of the “potentials” in the final season of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Since the early 2000s, Hagan’s mostly been relegated to guest shots and bit parts, but that should change after her striking leading performance as the mentally disturbed Los Angeles heiress Janie in writer-director Ben Cresciman’s moody thriller Sun Choke. The film doesn’t always work as a genre exercise, but it’s a winner as a character study, in large part because of how committed Hagan is to playing Janie’s derangement. Casting directors in search of the offbeat should take note.
Hagan’s well-matched, too, by legendary “scream queen” Barbara Crampton, who plays Irma, Janie’s combination caretaker...

Daily Dead recently did a Q&A with Sun Choke star Sarah Hagan about what initially caught her attention with Cresciman’s script, her experiences working closely with scream queen Barbara Crampton on the project, challenging herself as a performer, and more.

On August 2nd, writer/director Ben Cresciman’s stunning indie thriller Sun Choke arrives on VOD platforms everywhere, and will subsequently be arriving in select theaters on August 5th courtesy of XLrator Media. Daily Dead recently did a Q&A with Cresciman to hear more about what inspired his twisted psychological story in Sun Choke, his experiences working with the talented trio of Sarah Hagan, Barbara Crampton and Sara Malakul Lane, how he collaborated with his cinematographer Mathew Rudenberg, and more.
Let’s start off by talking about this story. Obviously, there is a lot going on with the relationship between Irma and Janie at many different levels in Sun Choke, which is fascinating to watch as it unfurls. Can you discuss your approach to the material and how you viewed the give-and-take between these two women?

Welcome to Random Roles, wherein we talk to actors about the characters who defined their careers. The catch: They don’t know beforehand what roles we’ll ask them to talk about.
The Actor: Best known as one of the ’80s premier “scream queens,” Barbara Crampton is currently enjoying a career renaissance after a decade or so spent away from acting (aside from the odd soap-opera appearance, a whole other aspect of her career we’ll talk about). After appearing in Adam Wingard’s breakout horror hit You’re Next, Crampton has once again become an in-demand name in the genre that made her famous, starring in indie movies like last year’s We Are Still Here. Unlike the screaming and falling that, for better or for worse, characterized many of her roles in her youth, these days Crampton is enjoying more substantive parts in films like Sun Choke, which...

Little Sister is writer/director Zach Clark's fifth feature film, and arguably it may be his best yet. It stars a talented young cast (Addision Timlin and Keith Poulson) mixed with seasoned actors such as Barbara Crampton and Ally Sheedy. The result is a delight to watch --- and a very different family drama --- one thankfully not sickingly sweet. Barbara Crampton has made quite the resurgence in horror films lately --- Applecart, Death House Beyond the Gates, Sun Choke, Tales of Halloween, We Are Still Here, You're Next, and Road Games --- to name a few. I caught up with her at the 20th annual Fantasia International Film Festival to discuss Little Sister (where it screened last night to a very receptive crowd) as well as what she's been up to lately, and what's next for...

Ben Cresciman's Lynchian, psychological thriller Sun Choke hits VOD and iTunes on August 2 and ScreenAnarchy has a healthy exlcusive to share. In the clip below, horror icon Barabra Crampton (Re-Animator, Road Games) delivers some news to an inflicted Sarah Hagan (Freaks and Geeks) that puts a smile on her face. But are her intentions entirely good? Well, you'll have to see the film, won't you? The emotionally intense and often surreal thriller has drawn early comparisons to Polanski's Repulsion. In her review, ScreenAnarchy's Michele "Izzy" Galgana described it as "a fever dream sprung from the mind of an unreliable narrator..." when she saw it at the Stanley Film Festival. Besides Crampton and Hagan, Sun Choke stars Sara Malakul Lane (Kickboxer: Vengeance), Jim Beoven and Evan Jones. ...
