1.7 eXtreme measures
This was probably inevitable, but inevitability didn't make The Gifted's first wheel-spinning episode any less tedious to sit through.
The show split the main characters into four groups, and only managed to do something interesting with one of them. This week's A-story would have been part of an interesting B-story in a good episode; two others are, except for an Easter Egg or two, a complete waste of time.
Let's start with the good: Jamie Chung is pretty good at acting. Thunderbird decides to try and bring Blink back to the underground, so he helps her find the place she kept...

The 69th annual Locarno Film Festival finally concluded after eleven days and screenings of 279 films, and awarded its Palmarès. The Golden Leopard went to “Godless,” a first feature from Bulgaria’s Ralitza Petrova. The film portrait of the criminal underbelly of Bulgaria also took home Best Actress for Irena Ivanova.

Craig Keller and Uncas Blythe continue our series of film dialogues. Isiah Medina's 88:88 is having its exclusive online premiere at Mubi, playing through April 17, 2016.Craig Keller: We're going to talk about Isiah Medina's 66-minute film from 2015, 88:88. It's a challenging movie: polyphonic, polypictorial, but not confrontational, in fact pretty chilled-out; if it were featured on Top Gear the hosts might praise its speed, dynamic facility, and stability of suspension. 88:88 presents Medina himself and a group of friends or characters from university in and around the neighborhoods of Winnipeg. Now I'll refrain from synopsizing any more. I had a hard time with the film, but like any complicated work revisitations in whole and in part yield stronger comprehension; accordingly, new insights rise to the surface. Going back through it again the other day I started by watching only the first ten minutes, which provide an overture,...

Music and Sex: Scenes from a life - A novel in progress (first chapter here).
As 1980 got going, Walter was distracted from Janie’s absence by progress on the band front. Garrick had found an electric guitarist, Tom O’Reilly. Though still lacking bass and drums, they decided to try putting together some new songs and practicing some covers -- because as TomO (as he styled himself) pointed out pragmatically, a good set of rockin’ covers would get them gigs at the frats that lined the south side of 114th St. Over a round of beers at the Marlin, a brightly lit bar that had less visual flair than a high school cafeteria, but the cheapest beer near campus, they decided to take turns suggesting covers.
Walter led off: "For Your Love." He liked it because of its harpsichord riff.
"Fuck that!" blurted TomO. "I was told we'd be covering Nuggets-type songs.
