If you don’t have a toddler in your life, the world of Nick Jr.’s “Paw Patrol” world might not be one you recognize. I myself headed into a screening for “Paw Patrol: The Movie” as an ambivalent aunt, surrounded by little nieces and nephews who just squee in delight at the mere mention of their favorite animated hero pups.
At best, I figured, they will have some fun, and I can be the cool Tia. So, you can imagine my surprised delight to find “Paw Patrol: The Movie” to be engaging, funny, and wonderful.
Much of the credit goes to writer-director Cal Brunker (“The Nut Job 2”) and co-writers Billy Frolick (“Madagascar”) and Bob Barlen (“Arctic Dogs”), who have seamlessly created a movie world where you believe 10-year-olds can run around with their dogs and save the city from political corruption. Yes, political corruption, but that’s not...

There’s more to Korean entertainment than “Parasite,” Bts and “Gangnam Style.” Notably, an animation sector that is responsible for keeping the long-running U.S. hit “The Simpsons” tooned up, but rarely gets the credit.
Independent production company Redrover is in Berlin on a mission to re-establish itself as a leading player in the cartoon industry, where its property “The Nut Job” has the makings of a global franchise, but only a few fans would identify it as Korean.
“Before ‘Parasite,’ ‘Nut Job’ was one of the most successful pieces of Korean intellectual property of all time,” said Chris Lee, an experienced indie sector executive who joined as the company’s head of international affairs in January 2019, after stints at Showbox and running her own acquisitions firm Clp.
She acknowledges that her task is no easy one, and that the company’s recent history is a tear-jerking saga of obstacles on the way of success.

September 2017 saw record returns with calendar grosses topping $695 million, falling just shy of becoming the first September to ever total $700 million at the domestic box office. Leading the way was Warner Bros. and New Line's massive hit It, which delivered record numbers of its own and accounted for over 40% of the month's total gross. September is also the first month since April to show an improvement over the same month in 2016, with September grosses finishing 18.3% higher than 2016. From a yearly stand point, 2017 was pacing 6.3% behind 2016 at the end of August and September grosses helped turn things around somewhat with 2017 pacing 4.6% behind 2016's record year by the end of the month. However, with October already pacing 20.8% behind last year (as of October 9) it's looking like September's gains will be lost throughout the current month, putting additional pressure on final two months of the year to turn the tide.Overall, September 2017 saw calendar grosses reach $696.2 million,...

2017 has been a lackluster year for animated films. There have been one too many saccharine, soulless products like “The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature” and “Smurfs: The Lost Village” that insult their young target audience by assaulting them with condescending lessons about the importance of teamwork. Soon, kids will likely get more of the same from “Ferdinand,” which was directed by Carlos Saldanha (the “Ice Age” franchise) and stars John Cena as the voice of a kindly bull who learns the importance of playing nice with hedgehogs (or something).

The Hitman’s Bodyguard, starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson easily took the number one spot at the box office this weekend. The action/comedy took in $21.6 million in its first weekend of release, which was well ahead of second-place finisher Annabelle: Creation’s $15.5 million.
Third place again results in a steep drop as the new film from once-retired auteur Steven Soderbergh, Logan Lucky, earned $8.1 million. While it may not have finished atop the box office, it is doing better with critics than other films on this list. Save of course for the fourth-place finisher, Dunkirk, which added $6.7 million to its five-week total of $165.5 million. The animated The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature managed to scrape together $5.1 in its second-week of release bringing its two-week total to an unimpressive $17.7 million as it more than likely begins the end of its time in the top ten. Marking the worst summer weekend over the last two years, action comedy “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” (Lionsgate) led the pack. The Top Ten grossed $81 million, $10 million less than the second worst weekend (late August 2016). The year-to-date comparison is widening, with grosses now down five per cent compared to the same date last year. That will increase until after Labor Day, with summer already down substantially more.
A post-“Deadpool” Ryan Reynolds enhanced the appeal of “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” which co-starred Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman and Salma Hayek; they lucked out with little competition.
The other wide release, Steven Soderbergh’s “Logan Lucky” (Bleecker Street) managed less than 40 per cent as much business – around $8 million – despite getting far more media attention pre-release as well as strong reviews for a mass audience film. Its strong ensemble cast (Daniel Craig, Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Riley Keough) failed to click, with its...

Lionsgate and Summit's action-comedy The Hitman's Bodyguard finished ahead of pre-weekend expectations and took the #1 spot at the weekend box office while WB and New Line's Annabelle: Creation scored a second place finish over its sophomore frame. The weekend wasn't too kind, however, to Bleecker's Logan Lucky, which did manage to finish third, but was unable to crack double digits from over 3,000 locations. As for the weekend overall, the top twelve narrowly escaped becoming the worst weekend of 2017 by less than $1 million by combining for $81.5 million. As of right now, this means the month of August is currently pacing 34% behind August last year while the summer season is pacing 12.8% behind last year. With an estimated $21.6 million, Lionsgate's release of The Hitman's Bodyguard finished #1 at the box office. This outperforms Mojo's pre-release forecast and is just a shade below historical averages for a film of this size and genre from Lionsgate.

Friday AM Update: The Hitman's Bodyguard did a solid $1.65 million from preview screenings last night, which took place at ~2,600 locations beginning at 7 PM.
This compares favorably to War Dogs, which brought in $1.25 million from preview screenings at 2,800 locations before opening with $14.6 million. It's also an improvement on 2013's 2 Guns, which brought in $1.28 million from preview screenings and opened with $27 million. It's also just a shade below the preview grosses for Valerian ($1.7M) and Ghost in the Shell ($1.8M), which opened with $17 million and $18.6 million respectively.
As far as R-rated films are concerned, however, this is a very solid showing as no R-rated film has opened with less than $16.5 million after bringing in more than $1.5 million in Thursday night previews, the lowest of the bunch being Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates which brought in $1.6 million from previews and opened with $16.6 million last July.

The cut only only takes a fraction of a second, but the trauma it leaves behind takes a lifetime to heal. It happens every winter, as teenage boys of South Africa’s Xhosa culture are spirited up to the hills around their hometowns, stripped down and smothered in ghostly white paint, and told to spread their legs. Their foreskins are then sliced away by tribal surgeons, many of whom use rusted knives rather than sterile medical equipment. All the same, it’s absolutely forbidden for the initiates to scream out in pain. This is a rite of passage, the start of a three-week initiation ritual meant to confer manhood — boys cry, but men suffer in silence. As Nelson Mandela wrote in his memoir: “An uncircumcised Xhosa man is a contradiction in terms.”
Ukwaluka is a time-honored practice; it began long before Mandela himself endured the experience in 1934, and it still...

This won’t be news for anyone who’s seen a movie — any movie — in the last 30 years, but Samuel L. Jackson sure loves to say “motherfucker.” For most of us, it’s just a swear word, but for him it’s an instrument. For the length of those four syllables, he’s less of an actor than he is a bonafide artisan. Yo-Yo Ma has a cello, Wayne Gretzky has a hockey stick, and Samuel L. Jackson has an expletive. What does it mean? Well, it can mean everything and nothing; it can be a threat, a term of endearment, or whatever else the moment calls for. For Samuel L. Jackson, it’s usually just a cold-blooded thing to say before he pops a cap in someone’s ass.

The latest installment of the Conjuring franchise (yes, such a franchise exists), Annabelle: Creation took the top spot of this week’s box office with $35 million. While director Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk pulled in another $11.4 million, bringing its domestic total to slightly over $150 million.
Finishing in a distant third place was the critically-detested animated feature The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature with an opening-week total of $8.9 million. Elsewhere, The Dark Tower fell to fourth place, earning $7.9 million (and a two-week total of $34.3 million) while the abysmal The Emoji Movie finished in fifth place with a weekend total of $6.6 million (and a three-week total of $63.6 million).
The little comedy that could, Girls Trip, finished the weekend with $6.5 million, which was good enough to not only land it in sixth place, but bring its four-week total to $97.2 million as it begins its crawl out of the top ten. Spider-Man: Homecoming continued...

The summer is officially over. With The Dark Tower now out, the big blockbusters are all but done for the next few months. Here’s where we usually enter the lull of the season, interspersed with horror films and the occasional Oscar contender (before the true contenders roll along November and December). This weekend saw the release of horror film Annabelle: Creation, animated film The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature, and the limited release of the drama flick The Glass Castle.
Taking the number one spot is Annabelle: Creation, with $35 million. While this may be a couple million short of the original Annabelle’s $37 million, it’s a haul that more than eclipses its $15 million budget. Take into account the worldwide haul (so far) of $71.7 million, and you have another big success. We can’t forget the bad taste that the first Annabelle left in audience’s mouths, and as such,...

The good news: the Top Ten grosses dropped a bit over one third from the same weekend last year with a total of $97 million. That’s compared to last weekend, which was down more than half.
The bad news: despite a profitable showing for producer James Wan’s horror prequel “Annabelle: Creation” (Warner Bros.), August could wind up with the worst ticket sales in decades. Year-to-date grosses, which have been keeping pace with 2016 most of the year, are now over four per cent lower. The summer results will be much further down from last year, with the month likely to be off something like 40 per cent.
While this could be an aberration with an autumn rebound just ahead, it comes in the face of disconcerting news that “Wolf Warrior 2,” a Chinese-made period sequel, has grossed $681 million on its home turf. China has produced its own hits before, but lately has struggled with home product.

Moviegoers like playing with dolls — or at least menacing ones.
Warner Bros./New Line's R-rated prequel Annabelle: Creation conjured up a pleasing $35 million from 3,502 theaters in its domestic box-office debut, more than enough to scare off the competition even as it came in somewhat behind the previous three films in the successful Conjuring horror franchise.
Overall, it was another sluggish weekend at the North American box office, with revenue down more than 30 percent from the same frame last year as new animated offering The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature did muted business and holdovers including The Dark Tower and Detroit continued to struggle. Summer to date is now 12 percent down from the same frame in 2016, while year to date is down 4 percent.

It's a great weekend for Warner Bros. which saw Annabelle: Creation, the latest installment in the Conjuring franchise, top the box office with $35 million while Dunkirk topped $150 million domestically. However, fellow new releases struggled to give the box office much of a jolt as the top twelve brought in a combined $103.8 million, down 6% compared to last weekend and the fourth lowest weekend of 2017. Overall, the summer movie season is still down 12% compared to last year. With an estimated $35 million, Annabelle: Creation opened at the top of the weekend box office, delivering nearly $24 million more than the weekend runner-up. This is the fourth feature in the Conjuring franchise which continues to deliver each time out. Carrying a budget of just $15 million this is also a great outing for director David F. Sandberg whose Lights Out performed very well for WB just last year, bringing in $67.2 million on a $5 million budget, and...

A spare and unflinching documentary about the true cost of cheap textiles, “Machines” doesn’t tell us anything we don’t already know about the inhumane work conditions in countries like India, but it forces us to become palpably familiar with the awful facts of the matter. Applying a hyper-visceral vérité approach to a subject that might sound better suited to an infomercial, Rahul Jain’s debut feature is engineered to demolish the barrier between empathy and action, to narrow the distance between slaves and consumers.
