As Halloween approaches, U.S. audiences consistently demonstrate an increased appetite for horror content. Historically, TV show demand within the horror genre surges each October, and 2023 is anticipated to be no exception. The chart below shows demand peaks for horror TV series during the months of October in the last years.
The fluid nature of the entertainment sector ensures that the horror genre remains ever-evolving. Within this genre, audience preferences shift, as new shows introduce trends and captivate viewers, while interest in others wanes. A case in point is the burgeoning popularity of horror-comedy shows.
In the first quarter of 2021, this sub-genre accounted for 10.8% of the total horror show demand. Fast forward to two and a half years later, and its market share has risen to 17.4%. Contrastingly, suspense horrors, the frontrunners in the genre, have seen their demand slip from 72.6% to 66.4% during this timeframe.

Mike Flanagan brings back several of his favorite actors for his new Netflix series “The Fall of the House of Usher,” including wife Kate Siegel, Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood and Henry Thomas. You’ll also recognize several cast members from the canceled-too-soon “Midnight Club” and a few from the film “Doctor Sleep” and the limited series “Midnight Mass.”
And you might need help keeping track of who’s who within the Usher family, headed up by Roderick and Madeleine Usher. Flanagan drew on various Edgar Allan Poe writings for this macabre tale, including the title story, as well as “The Masque of the Red Death,” “The Raven” and “The Pit and the Pendulum.”

Generally speaking, TV is a less frightening medium than film. (Broadcast news notwithstanding.) Part of that’s the serialized nature of the format; it can be difficult to get really scared wondering whether Scully and Mulder will make it out of any given “X-Files” nightmare when there are 18 or so installments left in the season and you know the show can’t go on without its star characters. It doesn’t help matters that network standards have also kept horror TV decidedly tamer than anything found in R-rated horror efforts for decades; you just can’t put a Rob Zombie or Eli Roth joint anywhere.
And yet, in spite of those disadvantages, the genre has positively flourished on television as of late, with plenty of creepy limited series and spooky serialized dramas bringing terror to the small screen. Audiences curious about what caused this phenomenon can thank “American Horror Story,...

The first trailer for Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” has arrived, and it’s positively brimming with Poe. The limited series is set to premiere all eight episodes on Netflix on Oct. 12.
This first look jumps between several unsettling scenes, from lurking ravens to murderous ladies and seemingly other-worldly creatures. As Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell) curtly reveals that the family will “exhaust our arsenal until the threat’s neutralized,” Arthur Pym (Mark Hamill) pours over an active crime scene. Naturally, for Flanagan’s work, it all comes to a head with the appearance of Carla Gugino’s mysterious and skull mask-wearing Verna.
“Roderick Usher, your family is a collection of stunted horrors whose time has come,” Verna warns.
When asked who she is, Verna says, “Consequence. And tonight is consequential.”

The CW as it existed for nearly 20 years is truly no longer. Last year, Nexstar purchased a majority stake in the network, which was a co-venture between Warner Bros. and CBS. In the age of streaming, however, co-owning an unprofitable network simply made less and less sense. Enter Nexstar, who has been cutting back heavily on the line-up of scripted programming in an attempt to bolster The CW's profits. To that end, two more shows have hit the chopping block in the form of "Supernatural" spin-off "The Winchesters" and "Kung-Fu." With that, the final nails in the coffin have essentially been put in place.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "The Winchesters" will end with just one season in the books while "Kung Fu" is calling it quits after three seasons. They are the latest series to get the ax in recent months, along with the majority of the Arrowverse shows,...

The gun rings out, the character drops to the floor – another mystery procedural has begun! TV sleuths have 60 minutes (at least!) to figure out whodunnit. To Jacob Coakley and Jessica Hird, co-hosts of the Cluedunnit podcast, that seems like entirely too much time. On each episode of their comedy TV rewatch podcast Cluedunnit, they immediately guess the perp before there are any commercials – or clues.
“Every mystery starts a new game,” says Hird. “Of all the various suspects, who do you bet on? Guy-With-a-Mustache? Lady Germaphobe? Or Sexy-Stranger-With-The-Menacing-Stare?”
“Mystery novels were originally called ‘The Grandest Game’ by mystery author John Dickson Carr,” adds Coakley. “He argued that a good detective story was a hoodwinking contest, a duel between author and reader. Well, in any duel it’s always best to shoot first. So we go off half-cocked, making the best guesses we can, as soon as we can. Of course,...

As is typical with a second season sitcom, CBS’ “Ghosts” has now gotten to try its hand at one of the hallmarks of the genre: the Christmas episode.
The two-part midseason finale “The Christmas Spirit” sees Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) host Jay’s sister Bela (Punam Patel) at their upstate New York mansion for Christmas. Bela surprises Sam and Jay when she shows up with her single and extremely eligible friend Eric (Andrew Leeds), but is quick to assure everyone (including a pained Eric) that there’s absolutely nothing romantically going on between them. But Sam, being a romantic and a Christmas fanatic, sets her heart on recreating her favorite holiday movies, and getting Bela to fall in love with Eric.

'Tis the season for holiday hijinks at Woodstone Manor!
Sam wants to create her own rom-com holiday movie, but the ghosts have other plans on Ghosts Season 2 Episode 9 and Ghosts Season 2 Episode 10. Prepare yourselves for the most daring possession plot and Bela's latest dating mishap.
It's an hour-long episode dripping with holiday nostalgia and cheeky fun.
"The Christmas Spirit, Part One" and "The Christmas Spirit, Part Two" felt like two complete parts of one story.
This holiday tale isn't a case of two episodes being slapped together due to a schedule decision. Or two episodes airing back-to-back to rush through the production.
Both parts fit together nicely to tell a heartwarming holiday story set at Woodstone Manor. You couldn't have one part without the other; both were needed to fill out the story to give it a complete resolution.
I'd imagine this is what it would feel like if Ghosts...

All the cater-waiters of "Party Down" might not be having fun yet, but fans of the show can't wait for their return in the upcoming revival. The original series aired for only two seasons on Starz from 2009-2010. Watching these misanthropes bide their time working at the titular catering company while trying to find their big breaks in Hollywood is a true joy: The show is absolutely hysterical, with unforgettable characters and a surprising amount of heart. I've lost count of how many times I've watched those first two seasons.
Fans were crushed when the series got the axe so quickly, and there was talk of a "Party Down" film for a time, but sadly, that never materialized. Considering the fact that this cast has been super busy with other projects in the years since, it's pretty miraculous that they are able to don their pink bow ties once more.

The Midnight Club, the latest series from genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan, is currently available to watch on the Netflix streaming service – and next up is the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired limited series The Fall of the House of Usher. Netflix hasn’t announced a premiere date for that one yet, but Flanagan took the opportunity to hype it up a bit during a recent interview with The Wrap… and even compared to the Giallo style!
Here’s what Flanagan had to say about The Fall of the House of Usher:
It’s crazy. It is unlike anything I’ve ever done, but in the other direction. My favorite way to describe it to people is like The Haunting of Hill House is kind of a string quartet, and The Haunting of Bly Manor is this delicate, kind of beautiful piece of classical piano music, and The Fall of the House of Usher...

Vancouver actor Ryan Grantham, 24, has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2020 murder of his mother.
The life prison term is mandatory for Grantham’s second degree murder conviction, and Justice Kathleen Ker ruled he must serve 14 years behind bars before becoming eligible for parole, according to Chris Johnson of Vancouver legal firm Johnson Doyle Nelson & Anderson, who represented the young actor at his sentencing before the British Columbia Supreme Court on Wednesday.
Granthan had roles in a number of Vancouver-shot TV series and telefilms, including Riverdale, Supernatural and iZombie. Johnson said Grantham has been in prison since April 1, 2020 and during that period had been assessed by two court-appointed psychiatrists.
“The psychiatrists agreed that at the time of this horrendous event he (Grantham) was suffering from a major depressive disorder and a cannabis use disorder, among other things,” he said.

Former ‘Riverdale’ and ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ actor Ryan Grantham has been sentenced to life behind bars without the possibility of parole for 14 years for killing his mother.
The by-the-book second-degree murder punishment was handed down by British Columbia Supreme Court Justice Kathleen Ker on September 21 in Vancouver, reports ‘Deadline’.
With the sentence already a forgone conclusion over the laws of the Canadian province, the only real wild card was how long the guilty pleading Grantham would have to wait before the currently 24-year-old could apply for parole.
The Leo Awards nominated Grantham turned himself to police soon after shooting his 64-year-old mother Barbara Waite in the back of the head on March 31, 2020, in the family’s Squamish home, just north of Vancouver.
A second-degree murder charge in B.C. comes with no parole eligibility of between 10 and 25 years.

Ryan Grantham, the former “Riverdale” actor who pleaded guilty to killing his mother, was sentenced to life in prison with the ability to apply for parole after 14 years on Thursday.
The sentence, handed down by a Canadian judge, was automatic with his second-degree murder conviction, with only the length of parole ineligibility in question.
CBC reported the news.
The 24-year-old’s sentencing was levied by Justice Kathleen Kerr of the British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver. Court proceedings were held in June to determine when Grantham should be eligible for parole.
The previous hearing made headlines after prosecutors said that Grantham — whose credits include the 2010 film “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and a 2019 episode of “Riverdale” — allegedly plotted an attempted assassination of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in which he packed his vehicle with guns, ammunition, a dozen Molotov cocktails and a map to Trudeau’s family residence in Ottawa. In 1954, Eve Arden made history as the first woman to win a lead acting Emmy for a specific comedy series. She achieved the honor for playing the titular character on “Our Miss Brooks,” who made her living as a high school teacher. While more than a quarter of all Best Comedy Actress-winning characters have been housewives, teaching has proven to be the category’s second most favorable occupation. After Arden, Bea Arthur (“The Golden Girls”) and Melissa McCarthy (“Mike & Molly”) took the 1988 and 2011 prizes, respectively, for portraying educators. Now, “Abbott Elementary” star and first-time Emmy nominee Quinta Brunson has a shot at becoming the fourth member of this group.
