After premiering on Fandor last fall, the SXSW genre-bender Jethica is now streaming on the Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox!
Variety hailed Jethica as an “ingenious, deadpan horror-satire that asks, ‘Can you ghost a ghost?’”
Now that the movie has been available to stream for a few weeks, we’re sharing this hilarious Spoilery trailer that counts off how many times a character says “Jethica” in Jethica.
In this future cult classic, Jessica lives in fear of a man named Kevin who follows her everywhere she goes. While on a road trip in New Mexico, she reconnects with Elena—an old friend she hasn’t seen since high school—who has been hiding out at her deceased grandmother’s ranch. When Kevin mysteriously appears again, Jessica and Elena seek help from beyond the grave to get rid of him for good… but Kevin is different from other stalkers and won’t move on so easily.

Here’s all the new horror releasing June 13 – June 18, 2023!
For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.
Most recently adapted by Leigh Whannell for Universal’s 2020 movie The Invisible Man, the classic H.G. Wells story gets a new adaptation with Fear the Invisible Man.
Fear the Invisible Man was released on VOD outlets today, June 13.
It’s not an official Universal Studios horror movie, mind you, but Wells’ The Invisible Man is a classic tale that’s in the public domain, allowing for indie productions such as this one.
In the film from Hanover Pictures, “A young British widow shelters an old medical school colleague, a man who has somehow turned himself invisible.

The first time he made the trip to Europe to take part in U.S. in Progress, an event dedicated to independent American filmmaking launched by Poland’s American Film Festival in 2011, L.A.-based director Pete Ohs admits he was “very green.” “It was my first narrative feature…[and I was] very much getting into this world of independent filmmaking,” Ohs tells Variety.
U.S. in Progress, which this year takes place Nov. 9 – 11 in Wrocław, Poland, presents a selection of roughly half a dozen American indie titles in the final stages of production to European sales agents, distributors and festival programmers.
The event is often a crash course in the European market for directors like Ohs, who participated in 2016 with “Everything Beautiful Is Far Away.” For many it’s the first time that they’re exposed to film industry professionals on the continent, offering insight into an ecosystem of financing, production and...

Building a bridge between American independent filmmakers and the European market is the goal of U.S. in Progress, which is hosted each year during the American Film Festival (Aff) in Wrocław, Poland.
The event presents a carefully curated selection of roughly half a dozen American indie titles in the final stages of production to sales agents, distributors and festival programmers. This year’s edition takes place Nov. 9 – 11.
Along with offering a showcase of those films for European buyers, U.S. in Progress each year invites leading Polish post-production companies to the event, with Fixafilm, Orka Studio, Black Photon, Xanf and Soundflower Studio this year each offering a 10,000 in-kind award. That’s alongside a newly added 50,000 cash award being handed out by the Polish Film Institute, to be spent by the winning filmmaker on post-production, image, sound and/or VFX in Poland.
It’s an attempt to underscore some of the opportunities available to U.

During the 2022 SXSW Film Festival, this writer saw plenty of great movies, but one of the biggest surprises was director Pete Ohs’ Jethica, which ended up being so different from what I had been expecting going into it. Starring Callie Hernandez, Ashley Denise Robinson, and Andy Faulkner, Jethica’s story is centered around two high school friends coming together to deal with a stalker, but once the supernatural elements of the story are introduced, the film takes some unusual turns that left me delighted as a viewer.
While in Austin last week, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Ohs about his unconventional approach to creating Jethica and how his cast was far more involved with the creative process for the project than how movies are usually made. Ohs also chatted about how Jethica’s primary location dictated aspects of the film and what parts of the filmmaking process...

This year’s SXSW Film Festival marked the first in-person edition of the Austin gathering in two years, and it was filled with buzz for new movies and crowds eager to embrace them. From opening night entry “Everything Everywhere All at Once” to the meta Nicolas Cage comedy “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” SXSW was a satisfying platform for several upcoming releases.
But that’s only a small fraction of the lineup, which also includes a lot of smaller highlights that have yet to secure U.S. distribution. As usual, we’ve combed through the program and urge buyers to consider these gems as they look for new work to round out their slates.
Carlos Aguilar, Robert Daniels, David Ehrlich, and Kate Erbland contributed to this story.

Supernatural Dark Comedy Jethica Releases First Clip Ahead of World Premiere at SXSW: "A supernatural dark comedy like you’ve never seen, Jethica was shot in New Mexico in January 2021, in the midst of the pandemic, and world premieres at SXSW in the Visions section. Jethica boldly blends and bends genres, all at once shining as a sharp comedy and dire stalker thriller with an undead edge.
The third feature from Pete Ohs, one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 2013 ‘25 New Faces of Independent Film’ and co-director of the award-winning Julia Garner lead sci-fi fable Everything Beautiful Is Far Away, the film stars Austin-raised actress Callie Hernandez, Will Madden, Ashley Denise Robinson (Taking Stock), and Andy Faulkner (Youngstown).
Conceived and created through radical approaches to filmmaking, Pete Ohs continues to push the boundaries of indie film, collaborating with his four leads on the script and story of Jethica, each of whom shares writing credits,...

"I'm here to find the great lake of fresh water, and you seem to know a lot about the desert, so..." The Orchard has unveiled an official trailer for an indie gem titled Everything Beautiful Is Far Away, a quirky little lo-fi, sci-fi film about a man and a woman wandering around in a desert. From directors Pete Ohs & Andrea Sisson, this intriguing film is a metaphor for life and relationships, similar (thematically) to Swiss Army Man. I caught this film at the American Film Festival in Poland and it totally won me over (read my full review here). Joseph Cross stars, along with Julia Garner, featuring an appearance by C.S. Lee. It's very hard to describe this film, and even harder to convince anyone to watch it, so hopefully this trailer will get a few of you interested. It's a charming indie discovery that you'll be glad you took the time to enjoy.

This year’s edition of the Los Angeles Film Festival (June 14–22) abounds with directorial debuts and movies that are probably worth seeing for their title alone (“Izzy Gets the Fuck Across Town,” anyone?). As the fest continues to carve its niche in the L.A. film world, it puts increasing emphasis on discovering new talents rather than the best-of-fest strategy that pulls from Sundance and SXSW.
Since you probably don’t need us to tell you about the big titles that have played elsewhere — “The Beguiled,” “Patti Cake$,” “Ingrid Goes West” — here are 10 more out-there selections to seek out. Timing is everything: Laff only screens each movie once.
