Mary explains to her that she plans to marry Tony but later tells Tom the truth, that she has no intention. In return he confesses that he is considering a move to America. Following the policeman's visit, Anna is perturbed that her ordeal will be revealed, particularly as the animosity between John and Green comes to light. John gives his alibi, that he spent the day in question in York, and Mrs Hughes and Mary agree to collude with this. As Barrow goes to visit his dying father, Baxter tells Cora that she was beguiled into the jewel theft by a cruel footman called Peter Coyle, whom she loved but who fled leaving her to take the blame. - Lady Mary and Lord Gillingham come to the end of their time in Liverpool but are seen by the Dowager Countess' butler, Spratt, leaving the hotel together. He reports it to his mistress who assures him all is proper but she has a few harsh words for Mary. Rose continues her work with the Russian émigrés and arranges for a group to come to Downton to see artifacts from Violet's visit to the Russian court 60 years ago. To Violet's great surprise Prince Kuragin, someone who obviously took a great interest in her during that long-ago visit, is among the guests. Mary, at least, is happy to hear that her grandmother has a past. Below stairs Thomas is acting strangely and soon sets off, purportedly to visit his dying father. Anna is disturbed by the ongoing investigation into Mr. Green's death and Sgt. Willis' frequent visits. - Lord Tony Gillingham can't wait to go public about his relationship with Mary after their week in Liverpool, but she refuses to prolong it or 'overhaste' his proposal, and despite the dowager urging for a decent way out after she covered as her butler Spratt saw the couple leave their love nest decides back home against wedding him, who later admits planning a move to the US. Cora enjoys flirtatious art historian Simon Bricker discussing paintings with her, and bites back when the earl duly grumbles about her dining with another when he comes to London as a surprise, already in a foul mood as Tom leans towards a project to build homes on a piece of the estate which would yield handsomely. Carson sees no reason even to inform the earl about the cook's improper request to have her shell-shocked nephew included on the war monument besides 'real heroes'. While erratic Thomas goes visit his dying bully father, Baxter gets a pardon from Cora who demanded the full truth: she stole for her bad lover, an abusive footman. The police investigation for footman Green'es death keeps closing in. Tim Drewe must tell Edith to stay away a while as his wife can't handle all the Marigold-contacts. Downton pulls all stops to receive Mary's Russian 'refugees', who are shocked by self-invited Sarah's sympathy for the Revolution, but the Czarist memorabilia charm them, and a fan helps the dowager reconnect with former St.Petersburg court friend prince Kuragin.—KGF Vissers
