LevelK continues to terrify international distributors with Finnish horror “The Knocking,” directed by Max Seeck and Joonas Pajunen.
The film has now been sold to over 70 countries, Variety has learned, with the company sealing further deals in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (Alamode Film), Latin America (Gussi), Cis (Capella Film), France (Kmbo), Indonesia (Pt. Falcon) and Taiwan (Av-Jet International Media).
“We have been looking at many Nordic projects, especially the Finnish ones. We definitely see a shift in not just more genre projects emerging, but also in the subjects and the creativity,” says CEO Tine Klint.
“‘The Knocking’ ticks those boxes in providing a Nordic horror with an original story, told through classic genre tropes, which is exactly what the buyers are looking for at the moment.”
The film is produced by Markus Selin and Jukka Helle for Helsinki-based Solar Films, also behind Mika Kaurismäki’s “The Grump: In Search of an Escort,...

Actor Johnny Depp plans to reignite his Hollywood career not through the silver screen where he made his name but through a new album with Hi Ho Silver Lining guitarist Jeff Beck.
After a highly publicized contentious legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard — in which Depp was awarded 15 million in his defamation case, while Heard was awarded 2 million in a counterclaim — the actor joined Beck for a handful of shows in the United Kingdom recently where the musical artist revealed the duo’s project.
“We actually made an album. I don’t know how it happened. It will be out in July,” Beck said, per the BBC. The pair have previously collaborated together on a cover of John Lennon’s “Isolation,” released in April. Depp has said in the past that he enjoys music more than acting.

Updated: Just days after testifying on his behalf in Johnny Depp’s acrimonious 50 million defamation suit against Amber Heard, Kate Moss joined her ex-boyfriend as he jammed with Jeff Beck for a third night in a row on the guitar legend’s European tour.
According to multiple reports, Moss attended Tuesday’s show to see her ex and Beck perform at Royal Albert Hall in London.

Finland has responded to a spike in demand for its content with a slew of new series. As revealed by Laura Kuulasmaa, executive director at Audiovisual Producers Finland (Apfi), over 30 will be released this year alone, a 20% uptick on 2018.
“Compared to eight, ten years ago, when there were maybe only five scripted series per year, the increase has been huge,” she tells Variety ahead of French TV festival Series Mania’s “Focus on Finland” showcase.
The Film in Finland cash rebate has facilitated international investments and growth of the budgets, she notes.
Matti Paunio, head of production at the Finnish Film Foundation, adds:
“I think the biggest trend overall is the diversification of subjects and points of view. Scripts and series are more courageous, they take on different genres more often than ever. Production is booming, but apart from the quantity, we are also providing quality.”

It will come as no surprise to anyone that there is, and will be more coming, a host of movies, especially horror movies, that have been made centered around the pandemic. The bigger budgeted titles wont be out until next year I’m sure but there’s a whole lot of lower budgeted titles that are releasing as soon as they can. Isolation is one of those films that has been made during the pandemic and during the time of self-isolation and social distancing. Unfortunately any movie like this is going to be compared to the excellent Host and almost definitely come up short.

There’s a new game set in the Alien universe cresting over the horizon. So it seems like it may be a good time to look back at another game, and one of the best pieces of media from the franchise, Alien: Isolation.
Alien: Isolation was released in 2014, to a rightfully apprehensive audience after the previous game, Colonial Marines, had tanked most people’s hopes for good games set in the Alien universe. As it turned out, however, Alien: Isolation not only ended up becoming quite possibly the best game of the Alien franchise but one of the best Survival Horror games of all time.
The experience of playing Alien: Isolation is like no other, this is because it understands what made Alien the film work and seeks to recreate that. It’s an excellent example of how everything comes together in games to provide a certain experience. Everything from the art direction,...

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where this month we’re talking to Nolan McBride, founder of the Dead Ringers podcast. On Dead Ringers, McBride brings together a panel of co-hosts to dissect “horror movie double features that share similar DNA, yet still have distinct personalities.” Past pairings have included May/Eyes Without a Face, Starry Eyes/The Neon Demon, Halloween/The Terminator, and other films that have some similar narrative elements, but take very different approaches to their respective material (they had a particularly charismatic guest for an episode that covered Bug/A Dark Song).
For our discussion, McBride nominated Taneli Mustonen’s 2016 slasher movie Lake Bodom. The film follows four teens as they return to the site of the real-life 1960 Lake Bodom murders, where a group of campers were brutally attacked, leaving only one survivor. Atte (Santeri Helinheimo Mäntylä) and Elias (Mikael Gabriel) seem obsessed...

Although it’s not the biggest sub genre, Finnish horror has produced a few good movies. Lake Bodom had some success outside of it’s home country, Dark Floors (the Lordi film) was surprisingly fun) and Rare Exports is a movie I watch and enjoy every Christmas. So if Euthanizer turned out decent, it was in good company. It turns out much more than decent and Euthanizer has a lot to like about it. So lets begin with the performances because there’s not a bad performance from any member of the cast. But the three leads will will get most the praise and justifiably so…

When four attractive teenagers go camping in the woods on the exact spot where four attractive teenagers were brutally murdered forty years ago, what the hell do they expect to happen? Lake Bodom, by Taneili Mustonon, shows us that the answer is… well, pretty much what you’d expect.
Setting it apart from the pack is that this backstory is ripped from reality. The Lake Bodom murders are one of Finland’s great unsolved mysteries: four teenagers sleeping soundly in their tents really were brutally murdered in 1960.
The killer introduced himself to his victims by plunging a knife through their canvas tent. Two hours later, three of the teenagers were mutilated beyond recognition and the sole survivor was staggering away with a concussion, a broken jaw and facial fractures. In a creepy detail the survivor reported glowing red eyes pursuing him as he ran through the dark forest. The killer promptly vanished,...

We've been keeping a close eye on Taneli Mustonen's upcoming Lake Bodom - known simply as Bodom in his home country of Finalnd - for quite some time now and with the Finnish release nearing they have just released the first Finnish theatrical poster art by Alen Grujic at Balkan Art Department. Every camper’s worst nightmare came true at Lake Bodom in 1960 when four teenagers were stabbed to death while sleeping in their tent. As the years passed and the case grew cold, the unsolved mystery turned into an urban legend, a creepy campfire story passed from generation to generation. Now, a group of teenagers arrives at the same campsite, hoping to solve the murder by reconstructing it minute by minute. As night falls,...

Real life murders are being sensationalized in Taneli Mustonen's Lake Bodom. On June 5th, 1960, three campers were killed near Lake Bodom, in Finland. One survivor was suspected of the crime, but never convicted. Over 60 years later, the horror film Lake Bodom takes a fictionalized look at these mysterious murders, which remain unsolved. Lake Bodom is being repped by Film Constellation for sales, globally. And now, a full length trailer is available for this truly terrifying film. The official trailer talks of campers-in-the-woods. But, this is no usual stalk-and-slash in the forest. This time, a group of friends are trying to solve ancient murders. They arrive at the original campsite, only to find a killer waiting for them. The film's first trailer is a compelling one. Though it borrows many cliches from previous horror titles, the trailer offers a bit of mystery as a strange figure emerges from the night.

It was 56 years ago this weekend that the shores of Lake Bodom were home to one of the most notorious and shocking crimes in Finnish history. Four teens on a camping trip were stabbed to death in their sleep in a crime that has remained in the news and public consciousness, a crime for which nbody has ever been sentenced, and that real life crime - or, more accurately, the mythology that has grown up around it - is very much present in Taneli Mustonen's upcoming Lake Bodom. Every camper’s worst nightmare came true at Lake Bodom in 1960 when four teenagers were stabbed to death while sleeping in their tent. Set up last year to champion Scandinavian horror, the Nordic Genre Invasion has most recently infiltrated Cannes, where some significant deals have advanced the cause. Taneli Mustonen's Bodom is finally underway, and it's been joined on its journey to production by Pål Oie's Villmark Asylum and Marko Mäkilaakso's It Came From The Desert.Mustonen's Bodom is inspired by the legendary unsolved murders at Lake Bodom in 1960 (the metal-inclined may already be familiar with the Finnish Children of Bodom, named for the same reason). Set in the present day, the film is about two couples who go to Bodom to reconstruct the events. It goes badly. “We aim to bring down the whole camping industry in Finland,” production company Don Films' Aleksi Hyvärinen chuckled to Empire last autumn. Mustonen's most recent film, The Reunion, was the biggest homegrown box-office hit in Finland in more than a decade.Oie's Villmark...

Some people make fun of me for my aversion to camping, but the joke's on them! I've seen way too many movies to not know that no good ever comes from poking around in the woods where you do not belong. At the very least shitting behind a tree sucks. Need another example to embrace civilization?
