- "Nashville" - "Nobody Said it Was Going to Be Easy"- Oct. 29, 2014
Once again we are all over the U.S. for tonight's episode. As the Luke Wheeler tour hits Wisconsin, Juliette heads to Cincinnati, Rayna is in St. Louis, and back at home Teddy is getting escorted around Nashville while Scarlett takes it a step too far with Teddy and Gunnar works to be a daddy.
First things first, the CMA nominations are announced and it's good news all around as Rayna and Luke both get multiple nominations including ones for Entertainer of the Year, Will and Sadie are nominated for Best New Artist, and Juliette and Avery share a Best Song nod.
It looks like that's all they will be sharing for the foreseeable future, however. After her collapse on stage-- she had a pulmonary embolism-- Avery drives all night to see her in the hospital in Ohio thanks to a tip from Zoey. But as they are trying to sort things out Noah arrives with flowers. Avery interprets this as Juliette moving on and storms out. Noah offers to be by her side but Juliette says she needs to work it out with Avery. So she goes to Zoey's hotel room to find him and talk--but first she promptly fires Zoey for her "All About Eve" moves onstage. (Not that it matters since the doctors have told her she needs to stop touring immediately.) Again she tries to work it out and again Avery is not receptive. She tells him she is only doing this two ways, either they are together and raise the baby as a family or she will do it without him completely. After some soul-searching on his part he goes to her and tells her he can't be angry anymore since it's no good for him so he is going to forgive her. She thinks this means they will be back together but he says, since he can no longer trust her that isn't possible. He says he is discarding her two options and that he will be in his child's life but not as her partner.
Speaking of surprise kids, Gunnar is still reeling from Kylie's news that Myka is his son. So he goes to Scarlett to seek guidance. He explains Kylie is leaving the following day but he since he no longer has any real family he doesn't want to let Myka go. She tells him to maximize the remaining time they have and if Kylie won't let him be a dad to at least be a friend. So Gunnar goes to the diner and offers to take Myka off her hands while she finishes work and packs. They spend the night bonding as Gunnar teaches him to play drums. The next day when Kylie arrives to pick him up Gunnar beseeches her to stay and give him a chance to be a father. She agrees and they tearfully embrace just as Myka enters from one room and Zoey walks in the front door, understandably confused about what's going on.
Scarlett befriends Terry and offers to wash his clothes and give him a hot meal. He reminds he doesn't take charity but is willing to work. She asks him to clean out Deacon's gutters. He sings an old blues song happily as he does it. When she washes his clothes she finds an old family photo --himself and presumably his wife and two kids-- in his back pocket. When he is done with the gutters she brings him his clothes and some dinner and they chat about the blues song he was singing. She compliments his voice and wonders if he's ever sung professionally. He says he has but that isn't a rarity in Memphis. She pushes and asks about the family photo and he gets angry and leaves. The next day he isn't in his usual spot outside her window.
Things are spiraling out of control with Layla who has taken to drinking. On the morning of the CMA nods she shows up at Will's hotel with camera crew in tow where he and members of Luke's band and crew are waiting to hear the nominations. On camera he asks what happened to her hand-- she cut it on the mirror-- and she asks what happened to his face. She insincerely congratulates him on his nomination and continues to get drunk and make a spectacle of herself throughout the day right on through the post-show celebration. Deacon gives him the heads up on the situation and Will wrangles her back into the hotel room where she attempts to kiss him. He pushes her off and she says she knows kissing her turns his stomach and it's his fault she is "this way," meaning drunk and sloppy. He again apologizes and tries to convince her that he does care about her as she takes a slug from a mini-bar bottle.
Deacon meanwhile is continuing his grouchy ways and Pam, the back-up singer, calls him on it, telling him to lighten up and try to have fun instead of wallowing in his misery. This inspires him to write a new, upbeat song and he promises her he will sing it onstage that night. But as he's ending his set, he is dispirited by the crowd chanting for Luke and decides against it. She again calls him on this and says at the very least his heart should be in the music whether he wants to be on tour or not. He takes this to heart and at the after-party he pulls out a guitar and starts singing the song for her. She begins to chime in on background vocals and Luke is super-annoyed that Deacon is pulling focus at his party. But they're focus will soon be drawn to another party.
Rayna is with Sadie in St. Louis when they hear the CMA news and both are thrilled. Rayna's happiness, however, is tempered when a TV commentator implies that she and Luke got so many nominations in part because of their high profile engagement. She is annoyed since she worked hard on her album and her label and wants to make sure they stand as two solo artists. So she starts thinking about campaigning for the awards, something Bucky notes she has never done before. And when she is asked to appear on "Dancing With the Stars" with Luke she asks to do it solo. The producer shoots this down until she offers him an exclusive premiere of the "bonus single" from her new album. This single does not yet exist but she's got two months to work one up. She later tells Luke all of this and he is a little puzzled that she seems to want to compete with him. She says it's not about that but making sure their individual identities don't get swallowed up by "Ruke." They agree to do their own thing but have each other's backs.
Teddy, on the other hand, is back to hanging out with the ladyfriend that Jeff Fordham introduced him to last week, Natasha. Jeff invites him over to dinner and they all hang out. Natasha even gets Teddy to drop his guard and go skinny dipping. As he's leaving he thanks Jeff since he really likes Natasha and then Jeff casually drops the bomb that he should like her since he got what Jeff paid for: Natasha is an escort. So all that listening and understand and flirting and banter? Just dong her job. Teddy is aghast, noting that he is the mayor and he can't be doing things like that. Jeff disagrees saying that's exactly the type of person a good escort is for, to help blow off the steam of all that stress. Teddy doesn't have time to argue though because he gets an upsetting text from Nashville PD.
When he went over to Jeff's he asked Maddie to look after Daphne. She complained she was supposed to hang out with Luke's obnoxious son Cole at the diner. Teddy told her to take Daphne with her. But at the diner, Cole and his buddies get bored and want to go elsewhere. So, Maddie gets the brilliant idea to invite them and several dozen other people over to her house for a full blown party that gets out of control. When a scared Daphne can't find Maddie she calls the police. Maddie meanwhile is pouring her heart out to Cole about her parents' divorce, finding out about Deacon, and then both he and Rayna promptly going on tour and her father now having nights out. Cole says he has her. She impulsively kisses him, seemingly not what he had in mind, just as the police bust in.
Luke, Deacon, and Rayna all fly back from their respective cities and meet Teddy and the girls at the house, which is moderately trashed. Maddie yells at Daphne that she can't believe she called the police. Daphne says she was scared. Teddy tells Luke that Cole was given a ride home by the police. Deacon and Luke bicker. Deacon briefly talks to Maddie while Rayna and Teddy confer. She admits she messed up. He tries to comfort her while still being parental. Rayna and Teddy have a surprisingly civil conversation between themselves about what happened and what to do moving forward and continue that conversation with Maddie and they tell her that a nanny will be hired because more supervision is clearly needed.
