- Rayna agrees to be shadowed by a reporter all weekend for the cover of a magazine, just as Luke hopes to rekindle their romance. Meanwhile, Juliette struggles to prepare for motherhood alone, and Will and Layla brace themselves for the premiere of their reality show.
- "Nashville" - "I'm Coming Home to You" - Nov. 13, 2014
All the tours are coming to an end and everyone is coming home for some downtime but it doesn't work out quite like anyone planned.
After a successful breakfast with the kids -- bacon cooked just right for everyone by Luke-- and Rayna's successful appearance on "Dancing With the Stars"-- premiering her new bonus track-- the family is finally going to get a chance to blend. But, there is a hitch in their giddy-up when Rayna is offered the cover of Rolling Stone. Another artist fell out and she was promoted from a one page feature. The catch is the writer has to spend this weekend, the one weekend the family has together, shadowing Rayna. No one is happy about it and several complications ensue.
First up is Juliette who is mad that Rayna has time to do press but not return her calls about the songs she has sent her. She goes to confront Rayna in front of the reporter. In a conference room, Rayna tells Juliette the songs are not her best work and asks how the pregnancy is going. Juliette rants about everything going on and Rayna says to put that in a song. Juliette worries the writer will portray her as a hormonal head case and Rayna agrees he probably will.
The writer calls Rayna on giving sound bites and says this story needs to be more in-depth and things go from bad to worse when he says he wants to see her home life.
The problem is she is also supposed to be planning her wedding with Luke and when they all go to the wedding planner to taste cakes Rayna is distracted by the reporters questions and Luke storms out. They fight and the reporter catches the tail end of the fight. The next day he goes home with them and the three of them stumble upon Maddie and Luke's son making out in the dark. Oops!
They try to talk to the kids alone but Luke's son says he won't be lectured by Rayna who is not anything to him. Luke goes after him and Rayna tries to talk to Maddie who argues the heart wants what it wants and Rayna can't expect her to just stop liking this boy. Rayna says she better and right quick because if the tabloids had a field day with her "Plain Jane"-ness Rayna asks what Maddie thinks they will say when they find out she's canoodling with her soon-to-be stepbrother.
Rayna goes to the reporter and asks him to not include what he saw with the kids. The writer says it's too good a story not to run with it. Rayna says she will give him a better story: the story of Deacon Claybourne. He is intrigued. He asks if Deacon hadn't relapsed if he and Rayna would be together. We don't see her answer. She goes home and tells Luke she feels like she needs a shower. She is clearly shaken and says she had to "go there" to protect their kids. He hugs her and thanks her for doing that. She notes this was the original date of their wedding and that they would be at their reception now and asks him to dance. As they do she asks if he takes this woman to be his wife. He answers yup and asks her back and she says "I do."
Juliette meanwhile is in fact a hormonal head case. She and Avery attend a meeting with the gynecologist and argue about birthing methods and discovering the sex of the baby. She later breaks down to Emily how alone she feels and asks her to be her Lamaze partner. She agrees. Later, when Juliette is doing a demo in the living room of a new song she is working on Avery shows up to deliver the crib. The wrong crib as it turns out. He is clearly touched by her song though. Emily goes to see him and tells him that Juliette is scared and sad. He admits he is scared too. The next day he shows up to the birthing class and is all in, he reaches around her and feels the baby kick.
Deacon came home from tour with a bad cold. He says his goodbyes to Pam the back-up singer at the airport, later saying to Scarlett what works on the road doesn't always work at home. The Rolling Stone reporter calls him as he's sick in bed and asks to talk for the Rayna story and Deacon turns him down flat. Pam shows up with chicken soup and he invites her in and proceeds to talk about Rayna, admitting for a time she was his life. Pam takes this as a cue to leave. He thanks her for helping him through his rough patch and helping him find his music again. She finishes the thought saying she knows he thinks it worked on the road but won't at home. She blows him a kiss and tells him to take care of himself.
In the continuing Adventures of the Gay Cowboy and His Naive Wife, Will returns to Nashville and tries to make peace with Layla. She apologizes for ruining the big CMA announcement and says she is better. She has in fact been writing songs and when Gunnar, Zoey, and Will go to see her play at the Sutler, they are all impressed with the depth of her songs. Later she tells him that she had never experienced much life before him and has this awful marriage to thank for finding her voice. But just as a friendship might be starting it is time for the premiere of their reality show. They attend a screening with a big crowd to discover the producers have edited it to basically look like the Nick Lachey-Jessica Simpson show: he's a big, shirtless hunk, she's an idiot who doesn't know how to use a can opener and is the butt of a number of jokes that has the crowd laughing at her. She is distraught and he tries to explain how it's just a dumb reality show. The producer comes in to tell them they have a hit on their hands and they both confront her about the way the storyline was shaped. The producer points out that Will of all people shouldn't want the "true" story to, ahem, come out and she's just glad they both signed iron-clad contracts.
In the continuing Adventures of Scarlett and the Homeless Man, Terry drops off a thank you note and harmonica to Deacon's house and Scarlett tells Deacon the story, noting that Terry has cleaned up nice. It turns out he's now staying in a shelter and hawking the local homeless newspaper, getting his life together. Scarlett asks him to come up to the writing room with him and as they work he finally confesses the picture was of his family. He explains he was doing a gig in Chicago and his wife loaded up the kids in the car to come support him and they died in a car wreck so he stopped doing music because it took his family from him. Scarlett Googles him and learns that he was a charting artist with a promising future and convinces him to sing the song they wrote at the Bluebird. Once there he is nervous and thinking about leaving until she agrees to perform with him. She, of course, has her own stage fright but overcomes it and they sing the song and it's a big success.
And finally, in the continuing Adventures of Gunnar and the Son He Never Knew He Had and His Resentful Girlfriend, Gunnar and Zoey are settling into a life where they help take care of Myka. Problem is Kylie is a flake who breaks her word and is constantly running off to see her boyfriend and leaving Zoey and Gunnar to care for him. She is angry that she got bounced from Juliette's tour and is now a housewife. Gunnar promises to talk to Kylie and offers Zoey a night out. But even though Kylie says she will do better, when her boyfriend breaks up with her she essentially snaps and tells Gunnar she has to go after the guy and abandons Myka to him, saying he is a better father than she ever was a mother-- CLEARLY-- and tells him to tell Myka she loves him.
