I’ve said many times no one was more Milestone than Dwayne McDuffie. Denys Cowan’s larger than life idea created the company. Dwayne showed up with the details for that idea.
Milestone has made an impact on the comics world to be sure. Most would say comics have had an impact on the world and I would agree.
Just as no one was more Milestone than Dwayne, there was no one more ‘comics’ than Len Wein. That may be my opinion, but I defy anyone who knew Len to prove me wrong. Comics at their best induce moments where you’re living within the world you’re reading about. As an adult, if you’re lucky that feeling will last a few minutes if you achieve it at all.
As a child, those moments lasted hours maybe even longer depending on your level of interest and in my case your level of pain.

The 29th season of The Simpsons premiered last night. Season 29. Goodness gracious. Anyway, the episode takes place outside of the usual Simpsons canon (if you want to call this show’s sprawling, intentionally contradictory world that), transporting viewers to a fantasy realm populated by characters from the long-running animated series. And yes, there was a […]

Don't get us wrong, Nicole Kidman can do no wrong. But just know if the Top Of The Lake: China Girl actress' red carpet look at all reminds you of Glinda the Good Witch (The Wizard of Oz reference, y'all), know you're not alone. Hear us out: Yes, there's no denying the Zuhair Murad dress is a masterpiece (just look at all that detail), there's also no denying there's a lot going on. All at once. Between the ruffled cuffs and neckline, the underlying, intricate beading and embroidery work, the small velvet bows and back cutouts, the crystal-embellished belt and the heavy tulle overlay, the gown is doing multiple things at once. Too many things? Well, that's for you to...

“There’s nothing worse than a politician without ambition.” So says the newly inaugurated president of Argentina in Santiago Mitre’s “The Summit.” It’s the kind of boilerplate dialogue you could hear in any broody portrait of politics and power, but it sounds particularly egregious coming from this one. Despite its larger festival platform and starrier cast, “The Summit” remains a wan, frustrating, and narratively unambitious follow-up to Mitre’s Critics Week prizewinner, “Paulina.”
With big-name actors and top-level access, Mitre’s third feature is an impressively scaled-up production. “The Summit” opens in the halls of the Casa Rosada, the sprawling presidential palace in the heart of Buenos Aires, and Mitre shot in the actual palace. As the steadicam rigs sweep from the back entrance to the kitchen to the gilded corridors of power, it introduces us to the characters who make the country run. First among equals is...

Mark Wahlberg is getting into the comic book business, and he wants his upcoming sci-fi comic Alien Bounty Hunter to be the "next big thing." He and producer Stephen Levinson (Boardwalk Empire, Ballers) are hoping that this comic book they've developed with be a big sci-fi film franchise. Thanks to the press release we have some details on the story:
In Alien Bounty Hunter, Ben Madsen is tasked with apprehending a wanted fugitive…but quickly learns that his target is not of this world. Madsen must track his mark through an alien enclave populated by the galaxy’s most dangerous aliens—right here on Earth.
I'll be honest, it doesn't sound like anything we already haven't seen before, but maybe the story will be decent. Wahlberg and Levinson had this to say about it in a joint statement:

Calista Flockhart’s scene-stealing Cat Grant played several roles throughout the first season of “Supergirl”. All at once a mentor and antagonist, Flockhart delivered a version of Cat Grant that used her hard-won power for reasons both good and not-so-great. Grant is a character that one either loves or hates by the end of the season, spawning debates on both sides of the fence regarding the show’s interpretation of the comic book character. The switch to The CW meant that filming for season 2 took place in Vancouver, as opposed to California. As a result, Grant has taken off for a new work.

When it comes to most closing night films at festivals, it’s usually a case of scheduling a left-over after most critics have cleared out and remaining audiences can easily lap up before heading back home after many days of non-stop movies. Consider our surprise then when the Hailee Steinfeld-led, James L. Brooks-produced comedy The Edge of Seventeen was one of the most well-received films of all of Tiff. Ahead of a release just in time for Thanksgiving, a new red band trailer has now landed.
We said in our review, “Festival films about teenage angst are a dime a dozen, or maybe a nickel at this point. The genre is as constrained by its expected tropes as horror or superhero films in today’s age, and as in those cases, it takes a guile filmmaker to either make them work or do something new. Once in a while, a coming-of-age movie rolls into town that generates excitement across the four corners of the film industry – think Juno, The Perks of Being a Wallflower or even Richard Linklater’s acclaimed Boyhood.
One film hoping to do cement its place in that echelon is The Edge of Seventeen, Kelly Fremon Craig’s directorial debut that features an endearing performance from Pitch Perfect 2 star Hailee Steinfeld as Nadine, a cripplingly awkward teenager struggling to navigate her way through such universal obstacles as high school drama and sexual awakening.
It’s by no means a radical departure from convention, nor is it likely to reinvent the coming-of-age genre, but buzz for The Edge of Seventeen is high, and we’re inclined to believe that Craig’s movie can find some wiggle room to carve out a story that feels refreshingly original. Mubi is partnering with the New York Film Festival to present highlights from Projections, a festival program of film and video work that expands upon our notions of what the moving image can do and be. Michael Robinson's Mad Ladders (2015) is showing on Mubi nearly worldwide October 5 - September 4, 2016.Mad Ladders began in 2013, as I was trawling through Whitney Houston videos, thinking I might make something of her many televised entrances and exits from stages and sets, and perhaps incorporate them into a different project (which soon after became The Dark, Krystle). Houston’s performance of “All at Once” from the 1987 American Music Awards started my fascination with the show’s elaborate staging. Following an introduction by host Diana Ross, the music begins, and a patterned curtain rises to reveal Houston walking downstage in silhouette as a formation of three large triangular sculptures move gracefully around her, all while the camera creeps steadily inward.

Despite having what was arguably the single biggest reveal of the season, Mr. Robot Season 2 Episode 11 was one of the least action-packed installments we've had in a while.
As is now the usual for Mr. Robot, "Python" was an artistic dream, but it was super, super slow – especially after the tense cliffhanger we left off on and especially since this is part one of the two-part season finale.
I'm sure we all remember the stellar closing sequence at the end of Mr. Robot Season 2 Episode 10.
All at once, we had: a shootout at the restaurant, endangering Dom, Darlene, and Cisco's lives, Angela being confronted by two mystery figures on the subway, and Elliot having potentially figured out Tyrell Wellick's location. It was a lot to handle all at once, but the interweaving scenes flowed perfectly, leading to a spectacular denouement.

They are two types of people in this world: The people who radiate confidence and naturally excel at life, and the people who hope all those people die in an explosion. That’s the deadpan opening of today’s red band trailer for The Edge of Seventeen, one that places True Grit and Pitch Perfect 2 star Hailee Steinfeld in the role of Nadine, an awkward young woman struggling to make the transition from teenager to adult.
Also starring Woody Harrelson as Nadine’s wonderfully dry head teacher, The Edge of Seventeen represents the feature film debut of writer-director Kelly Fremon Craig, while James L. Brooks is on hand to produce. Coming-of-age dramas are a dime a dozen, of course, but Steinfeld has long proven her leading lady credentials; this, coupled with Craig’s snappy dialog ought to ensure the scribe’s first foray behind the lens is one to keep an eye on.

True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld is getting her own John Hughes-esque coming-of-age story this fall with The Edge of Seventeen. The first trailer has now arrived for the raunchy teen comedy that handles the now-standard style of cynically funny high-schoolers who hate high school but still, like, ya know, have dreams, of course. Things get complicated for Steinfeld’s Nadine when her best friend (Haley Lu Richardson) starts dating her brother — yikes!
Drama ensues, handjob gestures are made, and Hailee Steinfeld says the f-word! As proven before, she seems to have decent comedic timing, and her exchanges with principal Woody Harrelson (who could very well be a scene-stealer) may end up being the highlight of the film. See the trailer below, along with a poster, for the film produced by James L. Brooks.

Subverting the Unexpected
At the end of the 20th century, Bobcat Goldthwait’s legacy read like a cheap joke: He was a screaming comedian from the eighties best known as Zed in the “Police Academy” franchise who once tried at his hand at directing a movie (“Shakes the Clown”). Those achievements barely skimmed the surface of Goldthwait’s ability, as the ensuing years made clear, when Goldthwait completely transformed his career into one of the most provocative American filmmakers working today. With the microbudget “Sleeping Dogs Lie” (aka “Stay”), Goldthwait showed his potential to funnel taboo subject matters into oddly touching, relatable human dramas, a proclivity he kicked up to a whole new level with the subversive black comedy “World’s Greatest Dad,” which features Robin Williams in one of his all-time great roles.
Goldthwait has kept innovating, with each new movie offering a fresh perspective on the naive assumptions...

No doubt about it, the latest season of Daredevil turned out to be quite the hit with fans. It contained the same grit, heart, and action that the first season was well known for. In addition to all that, however, the season really put Daredevil's morals to the test with the vigilante known as the Punisher. Rather than beating baddies to a pulp and leaving them for law enforcement to take care of, the Punisher believes it more productive to straight-up kill these criminals so that they can't put anyone in harm's way ever again.
This clash in ideals by itself is almost perfect, but actor Jon Bernthal's nuanced performance as Frank Castle only added to the credibility of the character. Through his portrayal, we were able to see the drive and the damage inherent in the man's DNA. In a recent interview with Awards Daily, Bernthal talked about his familiarity with comics,...

This is a Cinderella story about a girl who could never quite shake off the soot from her heels. The girl who found her prince, made her way to the kingdom, but still couldn’t fit into her glass slipper—at least, not the way the old princess did, not like Rebecca.
It may seem like Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 murder mystery, Rebecca, is nothing more than a story about a jealous woman succumbing to her insecurities, but the truth is that Hitchcock wasn’t just a master of suspense—he was also the master of subtly injecting deeper layers of meaning into his movies. Yes, it’s true that the second Mrs. de Winter lets her obsession with her husband’s first spouse take over her life, but there’s something else at work here. It isn’t just envy that drives the second Mrs. de Winter mad, as in addition to her identity issues,...

“Are you the new festival director?” asks a woman after briefly interrupting our interview. She approached us to ask for directions to a screening room in de Doelen, the central hub of Rotterdam International Film Festival (Iffr). In his native Dutch, Bero Beyer provides what seems to be an elaborate route, but the woman is satisfied. “It’s a great one,” he tells her in English after learning the title she’s off to watch. All at once, the woman realizes who she’s talking to but asks for confirmation anyway. “It’s so nice to meet you, sir,” she blushes, rushing off to […]...

Almost exactly nine years ago, CBS’ NCIS introduced viewers to Jeanne Benoit — and Agent Tony Dinozzo’s life would never be the same.

Since Jeanne’s father René was, unbeknownst to her, the arms dealer known as La Grenouille, Tony was tasked by then-director Jenny Shepard with getting close to the possible asset — and get close he did, falling into a romance with the beautiful doctor (as “Tony Dinardo”). When the truth about both Jeanne’s father’s criminality and Tony’s op eventually came out, the romance stopped short so quickly,...
