Season 1 Review
IPyaarCinema7 November 2020
Review By Kamal K

First season starts out a little light hearted. A lot more fun. Nothing too heavy. About half way through, serious themes begin to appear, and it becomes clear the show is not just a simple comedy cartoon. This is important, has something to share.

What a great finale!
and_mikkelsen16 January 2024
Honestly this was a great way to wrap up this first season as it had a little bit of everything i loved about this season while also providing a much deeper understanding of BoJack and setting up some interesting things for season 2!

This whole season has been BoJack chasing his dream of returning to fame and the spotlight he had doing "Horsin around"!

This finale explores the consequences of chasing that dream! What will it codt you? Is it worth it?

Vrilliant perspectives on it with the opening scene and the last conversation he shares with Diane by the end!

Also this show is brilliant at showing bad mental health in a subbtle way! It is show, dont tell... and I love it!

Can not wait to see what the rest of the show has in store!

Sometimes We Shouldn't Get Our Wishes

Bojack finally gets the role that he has desired all his life: to play Secretariat. So, depressed by his life, he tries to reinvent himself. He works with an intimidating female director. What happens is the fact that he has never really acted. His silly TV show allowed him to be himself and act in his insensitive off hand way. Not really act, that is. He realizes that he is quite a sad case and it's not funny.

Season 1: An enjoyable mix of comedy, character, and oddity
bob the moo30 December 2015
I try to avoid reviews as much as I can before watching something – okay I'll try to find out if something is 'good' or not before I invest in it, or that it sound like something I'd like, but generally I prefer to make my own mind up. Reading reviews after finishing season 1 of this show has been quite funny, to see the criticisms of it. One standing out for me was fairly representative of a lot of online comments and was complaining that the show was just not funny – and the individual validated this opinion by saying they 'get' this sort of thing and consider Aqua Teen Hunger Force to be one of their favorite shows. To me this sums up the misconception around BoJack Horseman – people see an animated show with characters being all sorts of animals and they assume that we are in adultswim territory, simply because of this, nothing else.

Stepping aside the appearance of the show, what we actually have is a pretty funny satire on celebrity life and culture, with some fairly strong characters, and a real heart. Yes it has oddity and silliness too, but this does not put it into the same market as 20oz Mouse, Aqua Teen, or any other animated show of that ilk. When I came to it I really didn't know much about it other than people I trusted said it was pretty good, and some outline details of the setup. I think this helped as it allowed me to come to meet it wherever it wanted to be. The comedy is regularly funny, with decent asides, but they are all grounded in the narrative and characters; so while they are funny asides they also provide a functional aspect to the development. The writing is pretty smart, with not too much that falls flat. I was also impressed by the detail too – an example being that in the title sequence a 'D' goes missing after one of the episodes.

The characters are surprisingly strong, and not just in the main ones but also in the supporting characters – who become richer in small ways as a the season continues. I won't say they are the most finely crafted characters in fiction, however for sure they are stronger than I expected. The voice cast responds to this well – and there are a lot of big names here. Arnett is strong of course, and works well with Sedaris, Brie and others. The rest of the cast has a lot of famous turns in smaller roles, and I liked that often I did not even notice the star name because I was just enjoying their delivery.

The season is not 'rolling on floor hilarious', nor is it an amazing character drama; but it does mix elements of both to produce and engaging and entertaining show, and I look forward to starting on the second season.

Just as brilliant second time around
isaacj-0999025 December 2019
Upon second watching of this I realised how slow the first half of season 1 really is, but also how it picks up in the latter. This episode is the final crescendo to the season arc. The writing is impactful, the score is soaring and the performances all round are excellent. The series truly is one of the greats of the decade.

"All that exists is what's ahead"

Personally, I felt this episode wasn't particularly special, especially compared to the penultimate episode. As much as it wrapped up all the story arcs of the season, as well as creating arcs for another season, it just feels somewhat forgettable as compared to the rest of the other episodes. However, the opening to the episode is very strong, and is certainly something to remember. All in all it isn't a bad episode, just particularly forgettable, and lacking as a season finale.

It's very hard to call this episode ending of the season because it's not very summing what happened in all episodes. Blank episode.
