The rest of the movie takes place "four years later", with the banner outside the toy fair specifically dating it as June 7-9, 2019.
Originally Bob Persichetti was attached as the director and screenwriter for this film who conceived it as the first installment of an animated trilogy. He pitched the idea of the film to Sony Pictures Animation in which the studio was interested in doing the film, but the plans in making the film however fell through. Sony Pictures Animation did offer Bob Persichetti a director's spot for the film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), a position he ended up accepting.
Del and his food truck were based on an actual pre-existing Playmobil figure and truck, the writers like the pairing of this figure and truck so much that they created the character Del for the movie.
