Ranker is a popular place on the Internet where people can rank whatever they want, however, they want, and whenever they want. This is always a fan-focused ranking system and it is never officially tied to the people behind the projects in question. Recently, a large survey was organized on Ranker, whose goal was to determine the best black actors in recent years. The list includes a bunch of names, but in our report, we have decided to list the first ten names from the site, as to provide you with a better insight, combined with our original comment and opinions which will add flavor to the whole report.
Of course, since this is indeed an important list, have decided to report on it, so we are going to bring you the results by listing the top 10 actors on this list, from 10th to first place. We hope you’ll enjoy it!

Katherine Mallen Kupferer, one of the breakout stars of “Ghostlight,” has signed with Fusion Entertainment for management.
“Ghostlight” premiered at Sundance and will be released across the country this summer by IFC Films and Sapan Studios. A Chicago-based stage and screen actor, Kupferer last year had a supporting role as Gretchen in the film adaptation of Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret,” which was directed by Kelly Fremon Craig and executive produced by James L. Brooks.
“Katherine leaps off the screen in both ‘Ghostlight’ and ‘Are You There God? It’s Me Margeret,” said Fusion Entertainment partners Chris Evans and Adam Kersh. “Even at a young age, she is an impressively versatile comedic and dramatic actor. We look forward to working with Katherine and helping guide her already promising career to new heights.”

Before "Star Wars," there was "Thx 1138." A strange, dystopic science fiction movie packed with big ideas up to its eyeballs, "Thx 1138" is now mostly known as the feature directorial debut of one George Walton Lucas Jr. (though it also came back in conversation when the best episode of "Andor" paid homage to it). The future Lucasfilm founder originally created this story of repressed emotions and stymied sexuality as a student film, but by the time it was reimagined as a feature, it had gained backing from Warner Bros.
Lucas' American Zoetrope co-founder Francis Ford Coppola also had faith in the movie, and served as one of its producers. "Thx 1138" starred Robert Duvall, then already known for his work on stage and television, not to mention in films like "To Kill A Mockingbird," "M*A*S*H," and "True Grit." Future "Halloween" actor Donald Pleasence co-starred, along with a then-unknown actress named Maggie McOmie.

Move over, Chris Pratt. The Lincoln Lawyer actor Manuel Garcia-Rulfo is a new leading man for Universal and Amblin’s latest Jurassic World movie. The next chapter in Universal’s dinosaur-run amock franchise already stars Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey, and Gareth Edwards is directing. Dinosaurs will rule the world again on July 2, 2025, when the film stomps into cinemas.
Edwards’s Jurassic World movie is a fresh start for the beloved franchise, with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard not expected to return. The next installment also leaves the original trilogy’s stars, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum, in the rearview. David Koepp, who wrote Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park, is penning the screenplay. Other stars rumored to be up for roles are Dev Patel (Monkey Man) and Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead), though nothing is confirmed.

Sade Adu and her eponymous band have announced they are reissuing all six of their studio albums individually. Half of the albums will be released on June 21st, with the other three arriving on September 20th.
Diamond Life (1984), Promise (1985), and Stronger Than Pride (1988) are each due out June 21st, while Love Deluxe (1992), Lovers Rock (2000), and Soldier of Love (2010) are slated for September 20th.
Just like Sade’s 2020 career-spanning box set This Far, each LP was pressed on 180-gram vinyl and remastered at half-speed at Abbey Road Studios using a method promising “exceptionally clean and detailed audio whilst remaining faithful to the band’s intended sound.” Pre-orders are ongoing.
Though Sade haven’t released an album since Soldier of Love, they did return in 2018 with “Flower of the Universe” and “The Big Unknown,” which appeared on the soundtracks to Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time and Steve McQueen’s Widows,...

Anthony Chen's slow-burn character study is essentially a showcase for its star Cynthia Erivo, who after scene stealing turns in the likes of Widows and Bad Times At The El Royale and her lead performance in Harriet, proves she can not only carry a film but lift it emotionally beyond the script.
Based on the book by Alexander Maksik and adapted by the author and Susanne Farrell for the screen, Erivo plays Jacqueline, a Liberian refugee, whose experience on a Greek holiday island is far from a sun-kissed getaway. A liminal space already, thanks to all those holidaymakers coming and going, she exists in an even more precarious state. In the here and now, she is on the fringes, stealing sugar packets to keep herself going and olive oil as a way to generate a bit of cash by offering tourists foot massages on the beach. But Jacqueline is also emotionally.

Over half a decade ago, NBC premiered one of its most hilarious crime comedies, Good Girls, with its amazing cast. Good Girls wasn’t the first female-led heist series in television or in film. Like the British primetime television crime drama Widows, which Steve McQueen’s 2018 movie was based on, Good Girls quickly became a hit with audiences because of its relatability. Unsurprisingly, the Good Girls pilot episode attracted 8 million viewers. The show’s premise centers around three suburban mothers in Michigan who decide to work together to rob a local supermarket to help solve their financial situations. Unbeknownst to them,...

In the history of Black leading actresses at prestigious award shows, Halle Berry’s triumph for “Monster’s Ball” at the Oscars stands prominently, while the BAFTAs lack a similar honoree, and the upcoming Sunday ceremony seems unlikely to change that.
This year’s roster of lead actress nominees boasts a diverse array of talents. Vivian Oparah garnered attention for her breakthrough role in the romantic drama “Rye Lane,” alongside Fantasia Barrino’s captivating performance in the musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” Also vying for the coveted title are Oscar nominated actresses Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), with Margot Robbie (“Barbie”), who’s recognized in the best picture category as a producer. Speculation abounds among pundits and prognosticators, all anticipating a win for one of the three Oscar-nominated women, setting the stage for another year where Black actresses may find themselves overlooked.

The trailer for "Wicked" just premiered during the Super Bowl and it features recognizable stars like Bowen Yang and Ariana Grande. But playing the future Wicked Witch Elphaba is someone who might be hard to recognize under all that green make-up: Cynthia Erivo. She's not a household name, but there's a decent chance you've seen (or heard) her somewhere without realizing it.
Erivo is an English actress who rose to prominence with one of her first major theater roles: Celie Harris in the musical stage adaptation of "The Color Purple." She went on to feature in the musical film "Beyond the Lights," then took on the role of Chenice in the West End musical "I Can't Sing!" The name of that show was misleading: Erivo very much could sing, and would continue receiving bigger and better roles as a result. She soon made her Broadway debut in the 2015 revival of "The Color Purple,...

Attack Of The Fifty Foot Woman Remake Coming From Tim Burton And ... Gone Girl Author Gillian Flynn?
If you've been missing the acidic wit of "Gone Girl" and "Sharp Objects" author Gillian Flynn lately, don't worry: she's reportedly back in the screenwriting game, this time with a script that's set to become a Tim Burton movie, per Variety.
According to the outlet, Burton is set to direct a new version of "Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman" penned by Flynn, with Andrew Mittman and Tommy Harper producing and Kai Dolbashian on board as an EP. Mittman and Harper worked with Burton on Netflix's smash hit "Wednesday," and hopefully the unlikely director-screenwriter duo will bring new life to the story (which comes from the 1958 B-movie of the same name).
Apparently, it's unclear as of yet how much Burton and Flynn's "Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman" will follow its predecessor, but it's worth noting that the Nathan Hertz-directed original featured a literal 50-foot woman who was...

When Gillian Flynn novels hit the screen, it tends to result in something highly watchable. Take, for instance, David Fincher’s big-screen adaptation of Gone Girl, with its stellar casting of Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck, or HBO’s adaptation of the ultra-dark Sharp Objects, anchored by the ace Amy Adams. Now, another of Flynn’s novels is being adapted into an HBO series – her Sharp Objects follow-up Dark Places.
The series will see Flynn serve as co-creator, writer, and co-showrunner, working alongside Brett Johnson in all those capacities – while Guerrin Gardner will be co-creator and writer. The show is said to be in early development, so stay tuned for updates of it moving further into the pipeline. The novel was previously adapted as a film by writer-director Gilles Paquet-Brenner in 2015, with Charlize Theron leading the cast, though it went largely under the radar and received mixed reviews.

What if I told you that almost ten years ago, famous author Gillian Flynn had one of her novels adapted into a feature film starring the likes of Charlize Theron, Christina Hendricks, Nicholas Hoult, Corey Stoll, Tye Sheridan, and even a young Chloë Grace Moretz, for good measure? You'd probably accuse me of lying, since that first attempt to bring Flynn's 2009 book "Dark Places" to life mostly just came and went after releasing to poor reviews and has promptly been memory-holed by the moviegoing public at large. While that was a blow at the time — don't worry, Flynn was probably comforting herself with the fact that yet another adaptation of her work, David Fincher's "Gone Girl," had become an instant hit the year before — that loss has now become HBO's gain.

Gillian Flynn is returning to HBO following “Sharp Objects.”
The author will adapt her novel “Dark Places” into a HBO limited series, as IndieWire can confirm. Variety first reported the announcement.
Flynn, whose novel “Gone Girl” was adapted in an Oscar-nominated David Fincher film, will serve as co-creator, writer, and co-showrunner with Brett Johnson (“Escape at Dannemora”). Guerrin Gardner is also credited as a co-creator and writer for “Dark Places.”
The 2009 novel follows Libby Day across decades as she revisits the death of her mother and two sisters amid an alleged Satanic killing spree in Kinnakee, Kansas in 1985. While Libby survived, she testified that her teenage brother Ben was the murderer.

Christopher Nolan has built his name up over the years to the point that he’s widley considered the greatest director or our generation. His latest film, Oppenheimer, seems bound to finally win him an elusive best director Oscar. But, in the wild build up to his latest movie, many failed to consider his last movie, Tenet, which was unusually divisive for the director. With it set for a nationwide re-release next month, now’s a good time to look back on a movie that’s winning more and more fans every year.
Tenet was born from a simple idea that came to him while making his breakout hit Memento over 20 years ago. While putting that film together, he thought of a single image that helped him crack the way in which to tell a backwards story. The image was that of a bullet being sucked out of a wall.

The opening of Steve McQueen’s “Widows” is a great example of how filmmaking encourages us to create stories in our heads that exist across space and time. There’s a fantastic, rhythmic seesaw between domestic moments between a set of couples and moments of the men running from a heist gone wrong; in the intertwining of the two —with sound matches that couldn’t be coming from more different sources but still audibly line up — McQueen and editor Joe Walker lead the viewer to conclusions about who these thieves are in the moments right before they are no more.
“Occupied City,” McQueen’s latest film, expands on this particularly cinematic capacity to create story via the deliberate selection and omission of imagery — which is a roundabout way of saying that it’s a film about the Nazi Occupation of Amsterdam during World War II that doesn’t use archive footage,...

Ethan Hunt is about to join the DC Universe (or what is left of it). Top Gun pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell could find himself flying wingman to Harry Potter. Get ready for Batman v Transformers! The jokes wrote themselves Wednesday evening as late holiday season news broke: Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav met with Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish earlier this week to discuss a potential merger of their respective media companies. Yet any attempt at humor is of the strictly gallows variety (particularly since it is difficult to imagine someone like Tom Cruise working for David Zaslav).

Sooner or later, if you're a big-name actor with dreams of even bigger ambitions, it's likely that you'll eventually try your hand at stepping behind the other side of the camera for a change. In what feels like no time at all, Daniel Kaluuya has built up a strong and wide-ranging body of work under his belt, breaking out with 2017's "Get Out" (although real ones know him from the British dramedy TV series "Skins") and following that up with a trip to blockbuster land in "Black Panther," reuniting with director Jordan Peele in last year's "Nope," and most recently voicing fan-favorite superhero Hobie Brown (aka Spider-Punk) in "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse." But it seems that Peele's specific career arc has rubbed off on Kaluuya a bit, since he's now become the latest performer-turned-director with the impending release of his directorial debut.

There's nothing Hollywood loves more than a snappy, propulsive, made-for-movies book premise from some of the most exciting authors around. Just in the last decade alone, we've seen writer Andy Weir parlay the breakout success of his debut work "The Martian" and its 2015 adaptation by director Ridley Scott into another upcoming movie deal, this time headlined by filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller. More recently, "Gone Girl" author Gillian Flynn has had "Sharp Objects" turned into a major HBO series, while she teamed up with no less a talent than Steve McQueen to adapt the British TV series "Widows" into one of the most brilliant, under-appreciated thrillers of the last several years. Now, movie fans would be well advised to remember the name T.J. Newman, who appears ready to become the next big name-brand novelist around.

Steve McQueen Chronicles Amsterdam’s Nazi Oppression in Trailer for Epic Doc ‘Occupied City’ (Video)
The past and present collide in the first trailer for Oscar-winning “12 Years a Slave” and “Widows” filmmaker Steve McQueen’s epic and acclaimed documentary “Occupied City.”
Based on the book “Atlas of an Occupied City” by McQueen’s wife Bianca Stigter, the four-hour film offers two interlocking portraits: a vivid journey through the last years of pandemic and protest, and a door-to-door excavation of the Nazi occupation that still haunts his adopted city. What emerges, according to the official synopsis, is “both devastating and life-affirming, an expansive meditation on memory, time, and where we’re headed.”
The A24 film – which opens in theaters on Dec. 25 – drew raves when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and its release is unfortunately coming at a time when antisemitism is front and center.

“The Irrational” is putting the power of free gifts to the test. In a new Episode 2 clip obtained exclusively by TheWrap, Professor Alec Mercer (Jesse L. Martin) walks his students though how to use the promise of free merchandise and trips to find someone who doesn’t want to be found.
The clip revolves around a brainstorming session between Alec and his two protégés, psychology grad student Rizwan (Arash DeMaxi) and grad student assistant Phoebe (Molly Kunz). The task? Draw a man out of hiding who doesn’t want to be found.
It only takes a moment before Rizwan suggests using the “power of free” to their advantage. The idea is that someone would be more willing to give up their location if they think they can get something for free out of the deal. Together, Phoebe and Rizwan figure out an organization their target has already accepted merchandise from — a website called ProChessFans.

Where are the Skins cast now? Short answer: absolutely everywhere.
While the show did earn critical acclaim as well as a cult following over the course of its seven series, when this scrappy teen comedy drama launched on E4 in 2007 few could have predicted just how many household names it would spawn.
Among Skins’ impressive alumni are actors who went on to win Oscars and Baftas, play lead roles in hit movies like Slumdog Millionaire and Get Out, not to mention star in hit shows like Game of Thrones and Peaky Blinders.
Let’s take a look at some of the Skins cast’s best roles:
Joe Dempsie – Game of Thrones

The British drama The King’s Speech won best picture, best lead actor, best director and best original screenplay honors at the 83rd Academy Awards, which was impressive for See-Saw Films co-founder Iain Canning, as the British drama was his company’s first movie out of the gates.
“That was my first producing credit,” Canning told a Toronto Film Festival panel Saturday before, despite the success of the British drama, recounting the sweat and toil for the startup production company to get the film made.
For starters, the exchange rate went against See-Saw during the development of The King’s Speech. Period dramas were out of fashion among film buyers at the time, apparently, and a key financier pulled out of the project at the eleventh hour.

It’s been 15 years since Liam Neeson revitalized his career with the surprise hit Taken. And ever since, Neeson has been taking advantage of his new gruff action persona, lending his acting gravitas to action movies where he would dabble in gunplay and occasional fisticuffs. That’s not to say the Irish actor has been slumming entirely. The Academy Award-nominated actor has still been able to fit in films like Martin Scorsese’s Silence and Steve McQueen’s Widows to keep scratching his thespian itch. Now, Neeson is back in the driver’s seat in the trailer for his new action thriller, Retribution.
The official synopsis from Lionsgate reads,
Liam Neeson stars in Retribution, an immersive ticking-clock thriller that straps audiences in for a high-octane ride of redemption and revenge. When a mysterious caller puts a bomb under his car seat, Matt Turner (Neeson) begins a high-speed chase across the...

Any questions regarding whether Steve McQueen’s WWII drama, “Blitz,” will compete at this year’s Academy Awards can be put to rest. Following the Cannes premiere of “Occupied City,” McQueen’s four-and-a-half-hour documentary about Amsterdam under Nazi rule, festival head Thierry Frémaux, per World of Reel, said the movie will likely play the Croisette in 2024.
Starring Saoirse Ronan, Harris Dickinson and Stephen Graham, “Blitz,” which just began post-production, is steeped in the same historical milieu as “Occupied City” and takes place on the ground with Londoners during Germany’s aerial-bombing campaign against Great Britain. While it would’ve been exciting to see the two projects released alongside each other – a quasi-“Flags of Our Fathers”/“Letters From Iwo Jima” pairing, if you will – a 2024 release makes logistical sense for Apple, which no doubt has its hands full this year with Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” (premiering...

So, we’ve had the perennial discussion about which actor could or should be the next James Bond but what about the man behind the camera? Strangely, the conversation around which director should helm a Bond movie doesn’t seem to take off quite as much — but it certainly deserves to. With that in mind, here are 10 directors we’d love to see take charge of the next James Bond movie.
Christopher Nolan
The fans’ number one choice. Nolan’s movies are always events — from “The Dark Knight” all the way up to “Tenet” and the upcoming “Oppenheimer,” Nolan is one of the best technical directors around and he is an expert of melding exquisite action set-pieces into the most intriguing narrative stories. Several of his movies already evoke a sense of Bond, including his Batman trilogy, “Inception,” and “Tenet.” Nolan and Bond would be a marriage made in heaven.

It took about an hour of speeches saluting Viola Davis during the Film at Lincoln Center’s 48th annual Chaplin Gala before someone addressed the elephant in the room.
“When I see a movie like ‘The Woman King,’ it has Viola’s fingerprints all over it,” said Davis’ “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby” co-star Jessica Chastain. “A movie like that with a female director and a cast of powerful Black female leads can get made in Hollywood today because of Viola’s lifelong advocacy for women of color. Maybe one day a movie like that can get nominated for an Oscar.”
The statement was met with enthusiastic applause from an audience comprised of Lincoln Center donors, industry colleagues, and plenty of acting students from Davis’ alma mater, Juilliard. It was an explicit callout to the biggest Oscar snub to cast a shadow over last year’s awards season, and contextualized...

Ti West has locked in an all-star cast for his Mia Goth-led A24 horror pic MaXXXine, with Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.), Moses Sumney (The Idol), Michelle Monaghan (Nanny), Bobby Cannavale (The Watcher), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), Halsey (Americana), Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul) and Kevin Bacon (City on a Hill) closing deals for roles.
MaXXXine is the third title in A24‘s first major horror franchise, on the heels of West’s films X and Pearl, both of which were released to much acclaim last year. The ’70s-set X had Goth pulling double duty as Maxine, who sees her pornography-shooting friends violently murdered in Texas, and one of their elderly assailants, Pearl. The latter film, set in 1918, meanwhile, served up an origin story for the latter villain character.

Brian Tyree Henry celebrated his first Oscar nomination by hugging a stranger.
“This poor guy, this poor white man,” Henry recalls with a laugh. The actor, who is currently shooting the Apple TV+ series “Sinking Spring” in Philadelphia, had spent the morning in his building’s gym with his phone on “do not disturb.” As he stepped into the elevator following his workout, he turned his phone on. “It started pinging and banging with notifications. There was 130-something text messages. I opened the first one and just saw: ‘Congratulations.’ And I screamed.”
At this point, they were trapped. “The doors of the elevator were closing. He can’t go anywhere now,” Henry says, then reveals the following exchange:
“I said, ‘I was just nominated!’”
“He said, ‘That’s great, for what?’”
“I told him, ‘It was for an Oscar!”
“He said, ‘Cool what movie was it?’”
“I said, ‘Who cares!

Oscars 2023 is filled with many first-time acting nominees
Throughout Oscars history, numerous stars have routinely popped up among a given year’s list of nominees. For instance, actors like Daniel Day-Lewis and Meryl Streep have three Oscars each and countless nominations between them. Likewise, the 2023 Academy Award nominations see the return of past winner Cate Blanchett and five-time nominee Michelle Williams. When you’re deep in the process of creating something, it can be hard to tell if what you’re making is good. The final results don’t always match the effort and enthusiasm that went into the production. When Colin Farrell was shooting Alexander with notable director Oliver Stone, he was convinced that the movie would be a huge hit that moviegoers would love.
But the movie ended up being a critical and commercial flop — one of many box office bombs that sent Farrell into a tailspin. He rebounded from a difficult time in his career to star in several excellent films in the past few years.

If there is one thing that Oscars nominations morning teaches every year, it’s to never be too sure of a sure thing.
While it’s unsurprising that A24 breakout “Everything Everywhere All at Once” would lead the pack with 11 nominations going into the 95th Academy Awards, as it is pegged to be a Best Picture frontrunner, it is shocking to see crowdpleaser “The Woman King” come up empty-handed, with even Oscar winner Viola Davis not making the final cut for Best Actress.
For the 2023 Oscars, Academy members gave little regard to films directed by women. Was that at the expense of recognizing more international talent, with the German-language “All Quiet on the Western Front” taking a stunning nine nominations?
Some surprises were predictable: We knew that there were a few straggling, unpredictable slots, but didn’t know who would fill them. Now we know voters really did like “Triangle of Sadness,...
