Kevin Costner watched people drag his name through the mud for long enough. He has finally stood up and given his side of the drama behind the scenes on the show Yellowstone. According to Costner, he has “taken a beating” in the press from the people on Yellowstone and wants his side of the story out there.
Here is what Kevin Costner said happened behind the scenes with Yellowstone.

Kevin Costner, 69, has broken his silence about the speculation around his rumored feud with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and his departure from the hit show in its fifth and final season. Sheridan publicly stated that he was “disappointed” with Costner’s exit.
Costner addressed the behind-the-scenes conflicts on the Paramount ranch drama and set the record straight in a new interview.
Costner emphasized that Yellowstone was of utmost importance to him. “If you know me well enough, I made Yellowstone the first priority, and to insinuate anything else would be wrong,” he told Deadline. “I did not initiate any of those things. They did.”
“I have taken a beating from those guys,” Costner said of the show’s producers.

Even prolific creators like Taylor Sheridan have to answer to their studios, and sometimes, a small miscommunication can lead to massive problems. Once upon a time, this happened with 1883, the famous Yellowstone prequel: Sheridan intended it to be a one-season gig but the studio didn’t, so the creator was forced to “somehow find a way” to make Season 2 possible.
Sheridan Was Forced to Make 1883 Season 2
The thing about communication is that both sides need to clearly signal their intentions. This clearly didn’t happen when Sheridan was working on 1883: he intended it to be a one-off mini-series, and the studio wanted several seasons. Imagine their surprise when nearly everyone died in the Season 1 finale!
“I know they read the scripts, but they don’t read [into] scripts… [Paramount CEO] Bob Bakish watched [1883 S1 finale] and said, ‘Wait a minute, she dies! They all die? What do we do in Season 2?’ I said,...

Here is the complete list of streaming services with more subscribers than Paramount+: Netflix, Disney+, and maybe Max. (Warner Bros. Discovery does not break out linear HBO from its Max/Discovery+ number.) That’s it.
Paramount+ has 71 million subscribers, and yet the prevailing theory is that whomever buys Paramount (or control of Paramount) — if anyone does — will shutter the SVOD/AVOD service.
Why’s that? Well, for starters, Paramount+ has yet to make money. It’s on the clock, though: Paramount management has the streamer pegged to turn a profit in the U.S. in 2025. It’d be a shame to close something that has lost billions of dollars right before it starts to make money — unless you’d make more money licensing the content currently on the platform, that is.
And that is almost surely what Sony would do if it ended up as the owner of Paramount’s assets,...

Kevin Costner would often like to imagine himself as a one-man army, if possible, who is capable of handling almost every single hurdle and blockade thrown in his direction with utmost precision and decisiveness. This character trait may also be the reason why the Hollywood actor makes choices bold enough to surpass even Quentin Tarantino when it comes to sequel treatment in films.

Where one might look to find Kill Bill Vol. 2, Jaws 2, and Back to the Future Part II, Kevin Costner stands firm on the prospect of sequels insomuch that he would not even dare to touch his Oscar-winning property, Dances With Wolves, that he himself directed, produced, and starred in.

Kevin Costner’s exit from Yellowstone last year proved to be a huge shocker for everyone as the series was going great up to that point. Since 2018, the show has become one of the best TV shows, and everyone tuned in to the Paramount network to see what’s next for John Dutton and his Yellowstone ranch.

However, all intended plans were scrapped and the series is now ending with season 5 part 2. The reported reason for the mess was alleged creative differences between Costner and Sheridan, plus financial disputes. Now, Costner is coming out of the gate and telling the truth about how the studio is the main culprit behind his exit and not Sheridan.

Kevin Costner’s career arc has led him from the dredges of the ’80s to the highest peak in the present. His journey from Malibu Hot Summer (1981) to becoming the star of the biggest television show, Yellowstone, to breaking the internet with his self-financed American Western, Horizon: An American Saga, it has simply been one news-making moment after another for Costner.
However, the movie star-turned-director’s passion project would have meant nothing if not for Taylor Sheridan’s mega-successful Paramount show. Costner investing a portion of Yellowstone’s salary alongside putting his Napa Valley property up as collateral puts him at a similar mad-genius spectrum as Francis Ford Coppola when it comes to making one’s passion projects come true.

But his Yellowstone experience quickly turned sour that left Costner with one big question for Sheridan: “Why don’t you stick up for me?...

Kevin Costner Slams Yellowstone Producers ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Kevin Costner is finally breaking his silence on the Yellowstone contract dispute that led to his premature exit from the hit Paramount Western Drama. The 69-year-old’s shocking exit from the biggest show on Paramount Network dominated headlines last year after reports surfaced. Costner was walking out following a dispute over the shooting schedule with the producers. Shortly after, showrunner Taylor Sheridan announced that the series would end with Season 5, split into two parts.
Kevin Costner has remained tight-lipped about the dispute save for a few comments earlier this year where, to fans’ delight, he expressed interest in returning for a potential season 6. As he prepares to premiere the first part of his western epic Horizon: An American Saga at Cannes, Costner, in an interview with Deadline, provided a detailed account of what went down with the show’s producers, including Taylor Sheridan.

After years of starring as the iconic head of the Dutton family, i.e. John Dutton in Yellowstone, Kevin Costner has left the fan-favorite show, though it wasn’t without much drama intervening in between. However, this twisted tale is even more complex than Taylor Sheridan’s saga, considering how it has taken yet another surprising turn about whom to blame for his exit.

Stunningly enough, as compared to all the other reasons that stated that a feud ensuing between him and Sheridan was the real reason why he left, this time, Costner has set the record straight through one statement that has inevitably implied that the mastermind showrunner Sheridan is actually not the one to blame for his exit, but rather the studios are.

When Aubrey Plaza first got the call about her role in Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, she’d literally just stocked up on Godfather-themed keychains and lighters from an actual Godfather gift shop. It should be noted she was not obsessively combing eBay for insane fan memorabilia. In fact, there was a legitimate reason for her purchases: she just happened to be in Taormina, Sicily — the home of The Godfather, if you will — where it was partly shot. And of course there’s a gift shop.
Plaza was, at the time, taking her turn as the maritally-challenged Harper in the second season of the HBO hit series The White Lotus — a role for which she was individually Emmy and Golden Globe nominated. And, when she heard that Coppola wanted to get on Zoom with her, she was also staying in the San Domenico hotel, his old home-from-home during The Godfather shoot.

We’re big champions of physical media here at JoBlo, and despite ongoing claims that it will soon be going the way of the Dodo, we’ve yet to see its demise. Kevin Costner is also a big fan of physical media, and when asked by Deadline about the supposed “death of the DVD,” he was quick to jump to its defence.
“Death of the what? DVD is not dead, at all,” Kevin Costner said. “That’s what they’d have you believe. Maybe it’s not making the same amount of money, but just try to go ask for that from the studio. They won’t give that up. A lot of people that like my movies, they can’t get to a theater, and they’re waiting for that moment. You can’t make your film for the opening weekend. You have to make it for its life.

For well over a year, Kevin Costner and the producers of “Yellowstone” have been at a stalemate about Costner returning to the top-rated drama on all of cable. Anonymous sources on the producers’ side have blamed Costner for the hold-up, accusing him of bailing on “Yellowstone” so he could make his passion project, the Western film series “Horizon.”
Now, with the Cannes premiere of “Horizon” imminent, Costner has given his side of the story about what happened with “Yellowstone” in the greatest detail he has yet shared.

It’s been almost a year and a half since “Yellowstone” fans have been able to watch a new episode of Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western family drama. And in the time since, a lot of the blame for the delay has been heaped upon the show’s lead, Kevin Costner.
When the show returned for Season 5 in 2022, it was announced that the season would be split in two and labeled 5A and 5B. But despite the initial batch airing in November 2022, the second half still has yet to be filmed. As Yellowstone trots towards its final episodes, there is still a ranch full of unanswered questions. Near the top of that list is, Will Kevin Costner be returning? In a (terrific) interview with Deadline in the lead-up to the premiere of his passion project, Horizon, at Cannes, Costner seemed to put a definitive answer to speculation. He says, “Well, I haven’t felt good about it the last year, what with the way they’ve talked about it. It wasn’t truthful. So now I’m talking about a little bit about what the real truth of it was. I made a contract for seasons five, six and seven. In February, after a two- or three-month negotiation, they made another contract. They wanted to redo that one, and instead of seasons six and seven, it was 5A and 5B, and maybe we’ll do six. They weren’t able to make those.

Taylor Sheridan’s dedication to authenticity is unmatched, and he proved just how far he was willing to go for his art during the filming of a scene for his Yellowstone prequel series titled 1883. He actually risked a lot for this 2021 miniseries starring Sam Elliott & Tim McGraw to capture a pivotal scene, adding an unparalleled layer of authenticity to the gripping tale.

After years of enticing viewers with its impeccable storyline set in the Wild West, Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone is in its last lag. With the release of the second half of season 5, fans will be bidding farewell to the original Dutton family. As heartbreaking as it is going to be to witness the end of the popular Paramount show, it is even more horrifying to think that, perhaps, Kevin Costner will not be returning as John Dutton.

One of the audience’s favorite genres is western, without doubt. But even the hardcore fans can’t say for sure what it is that makes them fall in love with it in the first place. The captivating macho-cowboy stories that are intertwined with classy romances, or the landscapes and horse riding scenes…
Seems like it’s the mix of all that stuff that creates that special atmosphere on screen, the one you want to come back to. But the thing is that the genre is now transformed into many subgenres, with the most popular among them being neo-westers or weird westerns.
Let’s talk about the latter.
What Is a Weird Western Exactly?
Well, the perfect answer is given by Prime Video with its 2022 creation Outer Range. It’s the perfect combination of classic, traditional western mixing in with sci-fi mysteries that are yet to be fully explored.

After a two-year wait, Outer Range season 2 is scheduled to premiere in 2024. Created by Brian Watkins, Outer Range was an instant hit among critics and audiences. The series was one of Amazon Prime Video’s success stories of 2022. However, its finale left viewers with several unanswered questions. Outer Range succeeded where many others have failed, especially as a multi-genre series. Better described, Outer Range is a blend of Yellowstone and Doctor Who if the Tardis were a large hole on the ground in the ranch. Kevin Costner’s falling-out with Taylor Sheridan and leaving Yellowstone might prove to be one of the biggest turning points of his entire career. An iconic Western actor, Costner put everything on making his own movies instead of finishing Sheridan’s saga, and since that decision, fans have been wondering whether it was worth the price he paid himself and made everyone else pay as well.
Kevin Costner Risked It All for Horizon
Costner is one of the most — if not simply the most — well-established actors in the Western genre. In the past years, Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone was his biggest project, having him play the lead role of John Dutton, the show’s ultimate patriarch. But being the lead star in someone else’s series didn’t seem good enough for him.

For most of its run, Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama Yellowstone was often compared to HBO’s epic fantasy series, Game of Thrones. The struggles within the Dutton family and between the family & outsiders over the Yellowstone ranch clearly drew parallels with the conflict over the Seven Kingdoms in Game of Thrones. Wes Bentley, who plays Jamie Dutton in the Paramount series, admitted to this connection between the two series.

Nicole Kidman is not one of the highest-paid actresses in the world for no reason. With her consistently incredible work in film and television, the actress has time and again proved that she can do anything and everything, no matter the genre. Whether it’s a thriller like Destroyer or a rom-com like Just Go with It, Nicole Kidman knows just how to do justice to her roles.

She has also worked as a producer on many projects including Taylor Sheridan’s spy thriller, Special Ops: Lioness. If there is one actor who knows how to star in Western films, it’s Kevin Costner. The genre is known for being quite restrictive. Despite this, he has perfectly understood how to make such projects captivating. The perfect example is the critically acclaimed masterpiece, Yellowstone. The series is known for its relatability while simultaneously creating a deeply captivating story. Unfortunately, since the star left the cast, many have wondered about the future of both the show and Costner.

Would you believe that it has been over 20 years since Night of the Comet director/scribe Thom Eberhardt penned a movie? Well, he’s back, writing upcoming horror movie Menace, which is slated to make an appearance at this year’s Cannes Market.
Menace comes from Image Nation and Spooky Pictures, the studio behind Late Night with the Devil, a film that has been widely praised by critics and audiences (despite some controversies). Both companies were also behind 2022’s Watcher, another highly regarded work in the genre.
As per Deadline, Menace stars Isabel May “as a research student who has a psychotic breakdown and is remanded to the custody of her aunt and uncle in a small town. When strange things start happening around her and people start disappearing, she isn’t sure what is real or what is her imagination.”

Taylor Sheridan brought anyone with an experience on the ranch into his show Yellowstone. This included the acclaimed country musician Ryan Bingham. Bingham plays the guest role of a ranch hand, Walker, in the series. Interestingly, Sheridan is a big fan of the singer’s music and listened to one of his songs on a loop while writing the script for his pre-Yellowstone film, Wind River.

Kevin Costner was a rising young actor featuring in minor roles in the early 80s. The future superstar was on the verge of stardom by the mid-80s and was cast in two films that would become his breakout hits. First, he was cast in Roger Donaldson’s action thriller No Way Out. After finishing that film, he was approached by director Brian De Palma for the crime drama The Untouchables.

Taylor Sheridan has become the talk of the town ever since the release of Yellowstone, a neo-Western drama series that follows the conflicts around the borders of Yellowstone Ranch. The series is currently in its final season with part one already out. The second part is all set to premiere towards the end of the year. Apart from Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan has created two prequel series for his show, 1883 and 1923. Two more spin-offs will also be released in the future.
A still from 1883 (2021 – 2022)
When it comes to 1883, Taylor Sheridan has been praised for the show’s historical accuracy, something which he hired a team of historians for. There is no doubt to the fact that the director’s attention to detail was mind-blowing. However, there is a very subtle yet noticeable inaccuracy in the prequel series that might question Taylor Sheridan’s perfectionism – the characters’ teeth.

But the original story will continue, and stars Zoe Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira, Michael Kelly, Morgan Freeman, and Nicole Kidman. Saldaña and Kidman will continue to serve as executive producers, and Freeman will be upped to series regular after recurring in Season 1.
The series also stars Dave Annable, Jill Wagner, Lamonica Garrett, James Jordan, Austin Hébert, Jonah Wharton, and Hannah Love Lanier.

Taylor Sheridan is now an in-demand filmmaker who has created his own TV empire at Paramount. He is the creator of the network’s flagship show Yellowstone and its spinoffs 1883 and 1923. He also created other successful shows for the network including Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, and Special Ops: Lioness.
In addition to being the creator of Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan also starred as Travis Wheatley in the show
Before Yellowstone, he directed the neo-Western crime drama Wind River starring Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. While Yellowstone has a much bigger scope and narrative than the film, Sheridan found making the film far more challenging than the series as he had no financial support and limited time to make it.
