Political drama thriller “12.12: The Day” dominated the South Korean box office for a second weekend with a $13 million haul.
Its second weekend outing topped its first session, when it earned $11.2 million, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). And the film (aka “Seoul Spring”) increased its share of the weekend’s total cinema market to a crushing 81%.
Separately, ComScore calculated that the film’s single country receipts made it the seventh highest grossing film in the world over the weekend.
After two weekends on release, “12.12: The Day” has garnered $34.2 million, making it already the sixth ranking film in Korea this year and the third biggest Korean-produced picture. On this track, it will overtake “Smugglers” before the next weekend.
In terms of admissions, “12.12: The Day” enjoyed 1.7 million ticket sales over the weekend, for a running total of 4.66 million. The traditional...

Korean drama “12.12: The Day” brought life back to South Korean cinemas with a powerful $11 million opening weekend.
Directed by Kim Sung-soo and starring the reliable Hwang Jung-min and Jung Woo-sung, the film recounts a nine-hour period in 1979 in which a military coup was attempted. It is understood to be based on real events, but with a fictional telling.
It earned $11.2 million between Friday and Sunday accounting for four out of every five tickets sold in the country. Over its five-day opening run it earned $14.1 million.
That is the second highest opening by any film this year, behind only summer hit “The Roundup: No Way Out” and it is expected to achieve two million ticket sales on Monday.
The strong performance lifted the overall box office for the weekend back above $10 million for the first time since the Chuseok holiday in late September and only the second time since the summer.

Must-watch comedy series, eye-opening documentaries and an expansion of the “Bridgerton” universe are among the noteworthy additions to Netflix this month. May 12 sees the premiere of Jennifer Lopez’s new Netflix original film “The Mother,” in which she plays an assassin lured back in for one last job. And on May 23, the documentary “Victim/Suspect” examines how sexual assault victims too often get turned into suspects when they report their assaults.
“Queen Charlotte,” the “Bridgerton” prequel series, arrives on May 4 while a new season of Tim Robinson’s sketch series “I Think You Should Leave” drops on May 30. And if you missed the most recent season of the niche (but delightful) comedy series “Documentary Now!,” you can stream that on Netflix starting May 9.

Netflix recently announced it would be investing $2.5 billion into South Korean programming. Before Squid Game season 2 comes down the pike, however, the first seeds of that investment will bear fruit for Netflix in May 2023.
Netflix’s list of new releases for May 2023 is highlighted by the May 12 release of Korean series Black Knight. Set “in a dystopian 2071 devastated by air pollution,” this show will follow world-saving deliverymen known as “Black Knights.” Other international offerings this month include Japanese sumo drama Sanctuary on May 4 and Spanish crime thriller Muted on May 19.
Netflix’s domestic TV options this month include Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story on May 4. That will be followed by post-apocalyptic animated comedy Mulligan on May 12 and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s TV debut Fubar on May 25. And for those hoping for “triples,” I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson premieres on May 30.
On the movie side of things, Netflix has an unusually busy month.

Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video have both pre-bought “Puffins Impossible,” a spinoff of the animated short form series “Puffins” voiced by Johnny Depp, who is reprising his role as Johnny Puff.
The 18-episode show, which is currently in production in Serbia, is being made by Andrea Iervolino and Monica Bacardi’s Ilbe outfit via their Iervolino Studios and Serbia-based company Archangel Digital Studios.
The “Puffins Impossible” showrunner is Peter Nalli, who also made “Puffins” and “Arctic Friends.” These five-minute short form series originated from feature film “Arctic Dogs,” which was released theatrically in 2019 and became popular on Netflix. Iervolino and Bacardi acquired all spin-off rights of the animated characters from the pic.

If you don’t have a toddler in your life, the world of Nick Jr.’s “Paw Patrol” world might not be one you recognize. I myself headed into a screening for “Paw Patrol: The Movie” as an ambivalent aunt, surrounded by little nieces and nephews who just squee in delight at the mere mention of their favorite animated hero pups.
At best, I figured, they will have some fun, and I can be the cool Tia. So, you can imagine my surprised delight to find “Paw Patrol: The Movie” to be engaging, funny, and wonderful.
Much of the credit goes to writer-director Cal Brunker (“The Nut Job 2”) and co-writers Billy Frolick (“Madagascar”) and Bob Barlen (“Arctic Dogs”), who have seamlessly created a movie world where you believe 10-year-olds can run around with their dogs and save the city from political corruption. Filmmaking rarely travels a straight path, but for “Monster” it was exceptionally twisty. After the legal drama starring Kelvin Harrison Jr. premiered at Sundance in 2018 in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, it’s seen a title change, its first distribution deal fall through, and the original title restored. Producers Tonya Lewis Lee and Nikki Silver say it was all worth it: The movie premiered on Netflix May 7 and was among the top 10 Netflix titles in the U.S. last week.
“It has been a long journey, but it has been a really good journey,” Lee said. “It didn’t go the way we thought it would, but ultimately we landed where we were supposed to land. People are seeing it, they’re feeling it, and they’re responding to it.”
“Monster” is based on the 1999 YA novel by Walter Dean Myers, which follows a high school honor student (Harrison) who...

Seth Rogen revealed in a new Sunday Times interview the status of his relationship with frequent collaborator James Franco. Rogen has stayed mum until now regarding his Disaster Artist co-star after allegations of sexual misconduct against Franco came to light.
In 2018, five women accused the Oscar-nominated actor of sexual misconduct, all of which Franco has repeatedly denied. Earlier this year in February, Franco settled lawsuits with two of his accusers, former students of his now-closed film and acting school Studio 4.
When asked if Rogen believes the allegations, the actor said, “What I can say is that I despise abuse and harassment and I would never cover or conceal the actions of someone doing it, or knowingly put someone in a situation where they were around someone like that.”
Franco has slowed his work and shied from the public eye since accusations were made public. Since then he has appeared in HBO’s The Deuce,...

Jeremy Renner hasn’t exactly had an easy time of it lately. Following accusations that he threatened to kill his ex-wife, and multiple reports surfacing late last year that painted a very disturbing picture of his personal life, the actor has been finding himself in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Career-wise, his post-Endgame slate hasn’t been shaping up too well, either, with his latest movie, Arctic Dogs, hitting theaters back in November and ending up as one of the year’s biggest flops. Earning a measly $9.8 million worldwide, off a budget of $50 million, the animated feature follows an arctic fox “who wants to get promoted at his mail delivery job” and failed to find much of an audience.

Every day that we’re all stuck inside is another day we all hope for new content to stream on our service of choice. Luckily for us, Netflix has been doing a great job of keeping everyone satisfied with substantial drops all throughout the pandemic, and although we lost some great stuff at the end of April, May is shaping up to be yet another excellent month for the streamer. As a matter of fact, the platform is adding a few new things that you might want to check out today.
Most notably, the Michelle Obama biographical documentary, Becoming, arrived on Netflix this morning. The film follows the former First Lady on her tour promoting her memoir – also called Becoming – which details her experiences as a child all the way through her time in the White House. With most of the Western world – and probably other regions as well – stuck at home during the coronavirus pandemic, many are struggling to find ways to keep themselves from growing bored. Thankfully, if you have a solid internet connection, there are tons of things to do – be it playing video games, surfing the web and, of course, watching content online.
Speaking of which, Netflix just added over 30 films to its already sizable catalog on May 1st, kicking off the month in style, so there’s plenty of fresh titles to watch on the platform. But a new week means more new content and this coming week will be no different, with over 20 movies and TV shows set to make their way onto the streaming service.

You’re probably stuck inside right now during the pandemic and pining for the days when you had a social life. Thankfully, Netflix is coming to the rescue in May with a really exciting lineup of hit movies and new shows.
It’ll be a great month for films, specifically. The incredibly popular 80s time-traveling pics Back to the Future and Back to the Future Part II will be joining the already-included third entry in the franchise, while those seeking some good laughs can check out the Jim Carrey-led comedies Fun with Dick and Jane and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
Meanwhile, multiple entries in the Underworld series are dropping on the service for action-horror fans, whereas kids will be happy to hear that both Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory will be available right out of the gate.

With much of the world’s population currently advised to remain at home due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Netflix (and other streaming services) are more popular than ever. The company is reporting record audience numbers, which isn’t exactly surprising given that they almost literally have a captive audience, and over the last few weeks, Netflix has become so popular that in Europe they’ve had to decrease their video quality as so many people are streaming that they were in danger of slowing down the whole internet.

Four films debuted in theaters this weekend and those same four films took the top four spots in the box-office weekend countdown. For this weekend at least, bragging rights for the top spot goes to the Veterans’ Day themed Midway, which took in $17.5 million.
Elsewhere, the horror-film Doctor Sleep debuted in second place just behind Midway, with an opening weekend tally of $14.1 million. Meanwhile, the family-friendly Playing with Fire enjoyed a $12.8 million opening weekend and the romantic, holiday-themed comedy Last Christmas made $11.6 million during its first weekend in theaters.
Dropping from first-place last week to fifth this was the science-fiction sequel Terminator: Dark Fate, which managed to add $10.8 million in a crowded weekend, giving the sequel a two-week total of $48.5 million. Joker, meanwhile, finished in sixth place—dropping from second last week—adding another $9.2 million to its considerable bank so far, which now stands at $313.5 million over the last six weeks.

On November 6, the fifth episode of “The Masked Singer” showcased six acts from the first three shows who had won enough votes to stay in the competition. They again took to the stage clad head to toe in a cumbersome costume and performed another song.. Of these, the Ladybug, Rottweiler and Tree had sung in week one while the Flower, Fox and Penguin had done so in week three.
As much fun as it is to watch these celebrities sing, we get even more enjoyment from figuring out who they are. The producers of “The Masked Singer” love to tease us with video clues. Jeremy Renner‘s first film following several drug and domestic abuse allegations from his ex-wife, Sonni Pacheco, has gotten off to a horrendous start. So far, Arctic Dogs, an animated feature that follows an arctic fox who wants to get promoted at his mail delivery job, has pulled in a measly $3.1 million.
Honestly, that doesn’t sound like the most appealing concept to begin with; but it was enough to reel in several all-star voice actors including Alec Baldwin, John Cleese, James Franco and Heidi Klum, among others. Distributed by the incredibly inconsistent media company Entertainment Studios, the movie could have been a Halloween treat, but ended up being a trick for just about everyone involved.
According to a report from The Numbers, Arctic Dogs grossed only $700,000 on its opening night. Things admittedly got better as the weekend progressed, but having been made on a $50 million budget, it’s surely been a disappointment.

Late last week, National Association of Theater Owners CEO John Fithian performed a victory dance in the New York Times when “The Irishman” clearly fell short of the theaters Netflix sought for its platform opening. However, that looks like a Pyrrhic victory in the face of “Terminator: Dark Fate” — yet another $100 million-plus would-be blockbuster that opened in his theaters to little box-office effect.
Theaters don’t make the movies, of course, but they do influence what studios make. At Cinemacon, exhibitors respond to clips from films like “Terminator: Dark Fate,” “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” and “Gemini Man” as if they represent roads paved with gold, while lustfully booing any mention of Netflix. This is the third big-budget flop this fall, and it reveals a myopia that could destroy the industry.

“Terminator: Dark Fate” shot past box office competition but fell significantly short of expectations as Paramount, Skydance Media and Disney’s sci-fi sequel debuted to $29 million in North America.
The sixth installment in the “Terminator” franchise landed in first place on domestic box office charts, but the results are disappointing given the film’s $185 million budget. Heading into the weekend, the movie was expected to collect over $40 million during its first three days in theaters. A start above $40 million seemed attainable since reviews were strong and audience sentiment was overwhelmingly positive. “Joker” could have cannibalized ticket sales for “Terminator” since both film’s catered to younger men. For “Dark Fate,” 60% of opening weekend crowds were male, over half of which were under the age of 30.
International audiences might give the film a boost, though China only brought in a middling $28 million and could continue to stall in coming weeks. Overseas,...

It’s another disappointing weekend at the box office for Paramount as “Terminator: Dark Fate” is underperforming at the box office with a $29 million opening from 4,086 screens, according to industry estimates. That’s not much better than the opening for the film’s July 2015 predecessor “Terminator: Genisys,” which opened to $27 million.
This similar result is despite the return of series creator James Cameron as producer and original “Terminator” star Linda Hamilton, as well as marketing that heavily sold the film as a direct sequel to the beloved “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” while ignoring the less popular films that came after. It’s also in spite of improved reception for “Dark Fate” with a 85% audience score and a 69% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. “Genisys,” by comparison, had a 53% audience score and a 27% critics score.

Paramount’s “Terminator: Dark Fate” is falling short of expectations with a projected $27 million opening weekend at 4,086 North American locations.
Though the sixth installment of the sci-fi franchise is dominating domestic moviegoing, the results are a disappointment, given the hefty $185 million cost. “Terminator: Dark Fate” took in $10.6 million on its opening day, including $2.4 million from previews on Halloween night.
Pre-release forecasts for “Dark Fate” had been in the $40 million range. The film had generated buzz due to it being the first franchise entry since 1991’s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” with series creator James Cameron and stars Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger returning.
“Dark Fate” centers on Hamilton’s resistance leader Sarah Connor protecting a young girl from a deadly new killer cyborg from the future. Tim Miller (“Deadpool”) directed “Dark Fate” from a screenplay by David S. Goyer, Justin Rhodes and Billy Ray. New cast members include Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes and Gabriel Luna.

Despite better reviews and the return of James Cameron and Linda Hamilton, Paramount’s “Terminator: Dark Fate” is falling below pre-weekend trackers’ predicted $35-40 million opening at the box office, having grossed a dismal $10.6 million from 4,086 screens on Friday.
The film is now looking at a $26-27 million domestic opening weekend.
Such an opening would match the $27 million opening for 2015’s “Terminator: Genisys,” but that film opened on an extended July 4th weekend. With a very busy November slate coming up, this sequel’s box office hopes could be terminated very quickly.

‘Arctic Dogs’ Film Review: Unremarkable Kids’ Cartoon Offers Self-Esteem and Environmental Messaging
If you’ve been frantically sending letters to animation studios, begging them to make a kid-friendly CG-animated movie about the dangers of fracking and walruses, then “Arctic Dogs” is the extremely specific movie for you. Nobody else needs to buy a ticket, because although this film is hardly the worst of the year, it’s about as insubstantial as a tiny handful of snow.
Jeremy Renner lends his voice to Swifty, an anthropomorphic Arctic Fox who lives in the faraway, icy town of Taigasville. Arctic Foxes are bright white and disappear almost entirely into the snow, so nobody ever seems to notice him. He dreams of one day joining the “Top Dog” delivery service, on which the town’s entire economy depends, and which has elevated heroic huskies Duke, Dakota and Dusty into local celebrities.

Paramount’s “Terminator: Dark Fate” is stumbling toward a $28 million opening weekend at 4,086 North American locations — significantly below forecasts, early estimates showed on Friday.
Pre-release forecasts for the sixth installment in the sci-fi series had been in the $40 million range. The third weekend of Disney’s “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and the fifth frame of “Joker” are battling for second place in the $11 million to $12 million range, with “Joker” appearing to lead. The comic-book pic will wind up the weekend with about $297 million in domestic grosses.
Focus Features’ Harriet Tubman biopic “Harriet,” starring Cynthia Erivo, is coming in at the high end of forecasts, between $10 million and $11 million at 2,059 sites. But Warner Bros.’ crime drama “Motherless Brooklyn” and Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures’ animated adventure “Arctic Dogs” are showing little traction and heading for openings in the $2 million to $3 million range. All three new entries had been forecast to debut around $10 million each.

“Terminator: Dark Fate,” the latest sequel to the “Terminator” franchise that brought back the original stars Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger, made $2.35 million in previews on Thursday night. It opens on approximately 4,000 screens this weekend.
As November kicks off, “Terminator: Dark Fate” is one of four titles opening in wide release this weekend. Warner Bros. has the noir film “Motherless Brooklyn” starring Edward Norton, Focus Features has “Harriet,” the Harriet Tubman biopic starring Cynthia Erivo, and Entertainment Studios has the animated “Arctic Dogs.” Additionally, Netflix is releasing Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” into limited theaters beginning this weekend.
“Dark Fate,” though, is aiming to prevent Judgment Day yet again and bring the “Terminator” franchise back to life, with the studio projecting an opening between $35-40 million behind a $185 million budget. It would have to overperform to $45 million to become the highest opening for a Terminator film, ahead of 2003’s “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

Of course, it’s the film that forces us to guess its gross that holds the most curiosity this week. Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” opens in eight New York/Los Angeles theaters to start its theatrical play ahead of a November 27 Netflix debut — and in far fewer theaters than it should be.
While Netflix is slowly adding dates weekly after its premiere, this is not a typical platform run. For one thing, among its initial theaters, the Egyptian in Los Angeles and the Belasco in New York aren’t even first-run locations — and while venerable, they’re far removed from plush stadium seating at premium locations. Two Los Angeles dates were added last minute, post-Sunday newspaper ads.
Netflix’s website for “The Irishman” lists theaters booked that have provided showtimes and have tickets on sale, and thus is incomplete. It currently lists around 60-70 theaters scattered through North America...

Saturday Am Update: Paramount's Terminator: Dark Fate is looking very soft after an estimated $10.6 million Friday, heading toward a three-day performance that could come up shy of the $27 million debut for 2015's Terminator Genisys. The film received a "B+" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.
Meanwhile, Focus's Harriet is looking to outperform our forecast after bringing in an estimated $3.9 million on Friday, heading toward a $10.5+ million three-day performance. The film also received an "A+" CinemaScore, which could give it some legs over the coming weeks.
As for WB's Motherless Brooklyn, it brought in an estimated $1.05 million on Friday and is looking to finish in the top ten, right around $3 million for the three-day.
Entertainment Studios's Arctic Dogs is struggling mightily, delivering just $700k from 2844 locations and is looking at a $2.5 million opening, and a per theater average around $880 for the weekend. The film received a "B-" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.

This weekend, Paramount/Skydance Media/Fox’s Terminator: Dark Fate opens in what is hoped as a complete re-invigoration of the franchise, bringing the pic back to its original James Cameron roots.
After the PG-13 Terminator: Genisys four years ago registered $89.8M — the series’ lowest grosses stateside the 1984 original pic’s $38.3M — and was critically slammed at 27% on Rotten Tomatoes, David Ellison’s Skydance sincerely is aiming to get this latest reboot right. If Cameron wasn’t going to direct due to the Avatar sequels, then heck he would produce and get a “story by” credit. Paramount and David Ellison’s Skydance have a lot riding on “Terminator: Dark Fate,” the latest reboot of the famed sci-fi franchise which hits theaters Friday. The $185 million film, which marks the repairing of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton for the first time since since “T2: Judgment Day” 28 years ago, is currently projected to gross a modest $35-40 million domestically from 4,000-plus screens.
If the film overperforms and opens to $45 million, it would have the highest raw opening for any “Terminator” film, beating the $44 million opening of the 2003 film “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.” “T2: Judgment Day” still remains the biggest box office hit in the series with $520 million in worldwide ticket sales in 1991 — but on a leaner $102 million budget.
More alarming, Paramount and Skydance are coming off a big failed gamble with “Gemini Man,” a $140 million sci-fi film that tried to drum up interest through Will Smith,...

Paramount’s “Terminator” franchise is back to rule box office charts.
“Terminator: Dark Fate,” the sixth installment in the sci-fi series, should earn $40 million when it bows in over 4,000 North American theaters, while some estimates show that figure could reach $47 million. Though it will launch against three other nationwide releases, “Dark Fate” is expected to easily win the weekend over fellow new offerings: Focus Features’ Harriet Tubman biopic “Harriet,” Warner Bros.’ crime drama “Motherless Brooklyn” and Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures’ animated adventure “Arctic Dogs.” All three anticipate debuts around $10 million.
Should “Terminator” reach the higher end of estimates, “Dark Fate” would earn the distinction of the franchise’s biggest opening yet. That title currently belongs to 2003’s “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” ($44 million), followed by 2009’s “Terminator Salvation” ($42.5 million). The most recent entry, 2015’s “Terminator Genisys” bowed with $27 million and ended its box office run with $89.7 million in North America and $440 million globally.

It's a narrow race at the top of the box office, but based on estimates WB's Joker was able to return to the weekend #1 spot after a brief respite last weekend as Disney's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil falls to second in its sophomore frame Meanwhile it was an equally tight race for third as well as fifth with the new releases of Countdown and Black and Blue competing for that last spot in the top five.
Returning to the top of the weekend box office is WB's Joker, which dipped just -35% as it entered its fourth week in release with an estimated $18.9 million three-day. The film's domestic cume now tops $277.5 million, which is enough to make it the seventh largest R-rated release domestically of all-time. Internationally the film added another $47.8 million this weekend, pushing the film's overseas total to $571.5 million for a global tally totaling nearly $850 million.

Industry projections this morning see Paramount/Skydance’s Terminator: Dark Fate at a $40M+ domestic start when it opens on Nov. 1.
The sixth Terminator movie reteams series stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, who haven’t been on screen together since 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day. The film also brings the duo back together with Terminator creator James Cameron, who returns to the franchise as a producer and story by scribe. Deadpool‘s Tim Miller directs. 20th Century Fox has overseas on the movie (minus Tencent in China).
We hear that the TV spot campaign for Dark Fate is about to kick into high gear. That said, note there’s a lot of upside here for Dark Fate to go significantly higher than what’s being safely reported today. Not only does the movie bring Cameron, Hamilton and Schwarzenegger back together, it returns the series to its R rating. That...
