He is widely admired, also for his commitment to fitness, but is not known to be the most loveable person around. In fact, Wahlberg revealed how his first meeting with Leonardo DiCaprio turned out, which is certainly worth making a film about.

Lionsgate has nabbed global distribution for “Flight Risk,” an action-thriller starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Mel Gibson. This will mark the first film Gibson has directed since his blockbuster ($175 million on a $40 million budget) and Oscar-nominated “Hacksaw Ridge” in 2016. The mini-major will be launching the project, featuring Wahlberg as a pilot transporting a dangerous criminal for trial, at Cannes.
“We love the undeniable electric pairing of Mel Gibson and Mark Wahlberg,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Joe Drake said. “These world-class talents combining for this dynamic, character-driven film will make ‘Flight Risk’ one of the most suspense-filled, must-see events of the year.”
Wahlberg and Gibson have starred in a few projects together, including “Daddy’s Home 2” and last year’s faith-based “Father Stu.” Considering the number of high-concept or true-story action movies Wahlberg has made with director Peter Berg over the last decade, it is a mild surprise that Gibson will be in charge.

HBO Max is developing a drama series based on the life of Heidi Fleiss, Variety has learned exclusively.
The untitled series hails from writer and executive producer Maggie Cohn, who most recently served as the co-showrunner on HBO Max’s critically acclaimed limited series “The Staircase.” Fleiss will serve as a consultant on the project.
Emma Tillinger Koskoff of First Love Films will also executive produce, along with Alex Goldstone (“Dickinson”) for Anonymous Content, Bill Gerber of Gerber Pictures, and David Bernon, Paul Bernon, and Sam Slater of Burn Later Productions.
Fleiss formerly operated a prostitution ring in Los Angeles that reportedly catered to wealthy clients such as actors, sports figures, directors, business executives, and more, earning her the nickname “The Hollywood Madam.” She was arrested in the early ’90s on multiple charges and ultimately served nearly two years in prison. Predicting which movies will set the box office alight seems like an easy task, but there’s a reason studios get paid the big bucks to do so.
However, every so often, an acclaimed film can come along that absolutely tanks after being unveiled for the public.
Over the years, there have been a startling number of films that have struggled, or indeed failed, to recoup their budget, and have consequently earned the “box office flop” label.
It’s hard to pin down exactly why movies such as these – Children of Men and It’s a Wonderful Life, to name a few – initially struggle to find an audience. Fortunatrely, though, the film’s quality shines through and it ultimately finds a fanbase beyond its theatrical release.
Thanks to the advent of streaming services, reliance on box office figures has diminished somewhat over the years. This also means that films which struggled...

The new adaptation of Salem’s Lot from director Gary Dauberman is currently missing in action, originally set for release in September 2022 before more recently being bumped to April 2023. As we learned over the summer, the WB/New Line movie is now without a release date entirely, and we’re waiting to hear more on that.
In the meantime, star Lewis Pullman (The Strangers: Prey at Night) has offered up some thoughts on Salem’s Lot in a chat with ComicBook.com, teasing the faithfulness to Stephen King‘s novel. How faithful is the new adaptation? According to Pullman, quite faithful.
Pullman tells the site, “Gary Dauberman, the director, is really keen on doing justice to the book. But also, the previous adaptation was a two-parter, because it’s such a hefty book and there are so many different moving parts and so many characters. So there are some parts where Gary had...

Father Stu star Mark Wahlberg wants to be a part of more uplifting content.
While speaking with Entertainment Tonight, he spoke about his journey filming and how the inspirational message behind the film, is opening up a new door in his career and transitioning out of the Hollywood spotlight.
“I feel like this is starting a new chapter for me in that, now, doing things like this [with] real substance can help people. I definitely want to focus on making more. I wouldn’t say necessarily just faith-based content but things that will help people. Hopefully this movie will open a door for not only myself but for lots of other people in Hollywood to make more meaningful content.”
Maybe Wahlberg is looking to make films that are seen as inspirational (like Father Stu), opposed to his more violent action cinema like Infinite, and Mile 22, or escapist films like Uncharted.

Mark Wahlberg may be an Academy Award nominated actor and producer, former rapper, underrated comedian, restaurateur and regularly finds himself named as one of the highest-paid talents in Hollywood, but over the last two decades you’re a whole lot more likely to see him starring in a run of the mill action thriller than a prestige drama, comedy or family film.
The 49 year-old has built a decent career out of headlining mid-budget genre movies that do solid if unspectacular business at the box office and are the subjects of middling but hardly scathing reviews. If you were looking for one of Wahlberg’s efforts that saw him playing a character with a military or law enforcement background that wields a gun on the poster, there are hardly a shortage of options to choose from.

November will bring about a brand new month, and that means that we’re losing a bunch of content on Netflix and gaining some fresh stuff in return. You can rest easy knowing that you’re all set for a ton of great new movies and shows throughout the coming weeks, and the 1st, in particular, will be adding quite a collection, including heavy hitters like the ensemble heist flick Ocean’s Eleven, Jim Carrey comedy Yes Man, children’s classic The Indian in the Cupboard and the Keanu Reeves thriller Knock Knock.
And although all of those films – and plenty others set to arrive on the 1st – are worth adding to your list right away, there’s an underrated action pic that you might want to check out, too. Of course, that goes double if you’re a fan of Mark Wahlberg.

Netflix is adding a ton of great titles over the next seven days. From Monday to Sunday, the streaming giant is unleashing some new Halloween-related originals for you to dig into as we approach October 31st, while it’s an usually busy weekend for the site, too, as Sunday marks November 1st, meaning a load of newly licensed movies and shows are being added to Netflix’s library.
Unfortunately, they aren’t bringing us anything fresh on Monday or Thursday, but the rest of the week is well-stocked. As you can see below, Tuesday the 27th delivers three new originals. The highlight of that day’s haul, though, has to be Blood of Zeus, the much-anticipated anime-style series that’s adapting classic Greek myths. Mark Wahlberg is never going to be considered one of the most acclaimed dramatic actors in the industry, but when he shows up in more serious fare, he’s usually much better than when we see him in the run-of-the-mill action movies that seem to be his bread and butter.
For instance, Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon and Patriots Day are far superior to generic output like Mile 22 and Spenser Confidential. Make no mistake about it, Wahlberg is certainly able to command the screen if he’s given the right material, but he doesn’t always pick the best projects.
One of his more underrated films, though, is 2018’s Instant Family, which did decent business at the box office after earning $120 million worldwide off a $48 million budget, but certainly isn’t remembered by too many people these days when it comes to listing highlights of his career. There are very much two completely different sides to the career of Mark Wahlberg, and they’ve combined hugely effectively to see him become one of the biggest and highest-paid movie stars in the industry over the last two decades. The 49 year-old is often accused of being a very limited actor, but with the right material in the right project, he’s dispelled those doubts on countless occasions.

Mark Wahlberg is never going to be regarded as one of the most acclaimed dramatic actors in Hollywood, despite picking up an Academy Award nomination for The Departed, but his performances in more serious fare are usually much better than the ones he gives in the run-of-the-mill action movies he regularly appears in.
His frequent collaborations with director Peter Berg are a perfect example of this, with the duo’s true-life stories Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon and Patriots Day far superior to the generic and uninspired Mile 22 and Spenser Confidential. Wahlberg is more than capable of commanding the screen if he’s given the right material, but more often than not he reverts firmly to type as a one-dimensional hero in standard genre movies, although he does remain an underrated comedic talent.

Exclusive: Even if New York City theaters aren’t opening, and even if Warner Bros. decides to move Tenet to August, Solstice Studios’ Russell Crowe road-rage movie Unhinged still will open on July 1.
While Tenet is being pinned as the long-awaited launch of the summer season after exhibition’s great shutdown since mid-March, Unhinged is the warm-up act to get turnstiles primed as multiplexes and their staffs adjust to operating in an environment of reduced auditorium seating (25%-50%), face covers, and heightened cleaning with a greater space between showtimes.
Tracking hits tomorrow for the first theatrical release from the new studio from Mark Gill, Guy Botham and Vincent Bruzzese which opened its doors in October 2018 as Deadline first told you.
It will be interesting to see what projections that the B.O. stat agencies put forth for director Derrick Borte’s Unhinged, especially for a theatrical marketplace which is far...

Mark Wahlberg is in early negotiations with streaming giant Netflix to produce and star in spy movie “Our Man in New Jersey.”
Should the deal be made, Wahlberg would portray a blue-collar 007 James Bond-type character. “Safe House” writer David Guggenheim is also in talks to develop the script. Stephen Levinson, who came up with the story idea, would produce with Wahlberg.
Wahlberg and Levinson worked with Netflix on the action-comedy “Spenser Confidential,” which began streaming on March 6 with Wahlberg in the title role and producing. Levinson also produced along with Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and director Peter Berg.
Wahlberg’s most recent feature films include “Transformers: The Last Knight,” “Mile 22,” “Daddy’s Home 2” and “Instant Family.” He recently wrapped shooting the independent drama “Good Joe Bell,” directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green with Reid Miller, Connie Britton, Maxwell Jenkins and Gary Sinise also starring. Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg have a long history together, going back to 2013’s Lone Survivor. Since then, they’ve made Patriots Day, Deepwater Horizon, and Mile 22, all of which are high-intensity action movies. There are films that sink under the urge to be too 'cool' with narrative structure, and "Spenser Confidential" is one of those. The effort is clearly to give an extra boost to a jaded, eighties-style cop action comedy. Yet, as the rather routine climax action sequence plays out at the end of a runtime of less than two hours, you are left wondering if this film was at all necessary in the first case.
Which would seem strange because "Spenser Confidential" marks the return of a viable Hollywood team. Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg are back together for the fifth time here, after collaborating on "Lone Survivor", "Deepwater Horizon", "Patriots Day", and "Mile 22".
Based on Ace Atkins' novel "Wonderland", the screenplay by Sean O'Keefe and Brian Helgeland casts Walhberg as Spenser, a disgraced former cop who was notorious for playing by his own rules. As the film opens,...

There’s nothing confidential about the fact that for every movie as quality as The Irishman that Netflix releases, they drop about five as mediocre as Spenser Confidential. Based on the series of novels by Robert B. Parker, later adapted as a television show starring Robert Urich, Spenser Confidential is the kind of movie that you’d be livid spending money to see at the cinema, but you’ll shrug off and forget about five minutes after streaming it. Even Mark Wahlberg, who stars as the titular Spenser, seems bored with the film.
Set in Boston (because where else would a Mark Wahlberg vehicle be set?), Spenser Confidential centers on Spenser, a recently released convict and ex-police officer. Spenser was thrown in jail after assaulting the captain of his precinct, and on the day of Spenser’s release, that same captain is murdered. The murder is pinned on a young...

A far cry from the previous four movies that Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg have made together (the two men Voltron-ing into a single creative entity that will henceforth be referred to as “WahlBerg”), the hilariously titled “Spenser Confidential” is a high-testosterone action thriller about a red-blooded, blue-collared, perpetually open-mouthed American patriot who decides to take matters into his own hands when some bad guys besmirch the good name of these United States. Just kidding — the only significant difference between this chaotic dreck and the likes of “Mile 22” is that “Spenser Confidential” is going straight to Netflix.
Beyond that — and maybe a surprising cameo from Post Malone — . By now, WahlBerg making a “funny” crime movie about an aggro ex-cop trying to sniff out corruption in South Boston is like if Wes Anderson made a “Succession”-esque screwball comedy about an inbred family jostling for control over a Bavarian tweed factory.

The career of Peter Berg is a roller coaster ride of ups and downs. There’s the throwback highs of The Rundown and strong drama of Friday Night Lights mixed with sturdy biographical films such as Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon then incomprehensible actioners like Battleship and Mile 22. He’s now back quickly after the quickly forgotten lattermost film and reteaming once again with Mark Wahlberg.
Spenser Confidential, also starring Winston Duke, Alan Arkin, Iliza Shlesinger and Austin Post, follows an ex-cop who serves some jail time after being framed by dirty cops and upon getting out, serves up some vigilante justice. Berg looks to be in a more playful mode here while still delivering the action beats he’s known for, so hopefully this is some diverting entertainment.
See the trailer and poster below.

"It's time you tell me what's really going on here." Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for Spenser Confidential, the latest film from the actor-director team-up Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg. Based on the "Wonderland" book series, Wahlberg plays an ex-cop named Spenser, of course. Just out of prison and trying to escape Boston, he is sucked back into Boston's criminal underbelly when two Boston Police officers are murdered. He teams up with his no-nonsense roommate, Hawk, to take down some criminals in this Boston crime world action-comedy. Also starring Winston Duke, Alan Arkin, Colleen Camp, Bokeem Woodbine, Michael Gaston, Marc Maron, Iliza Shlesinger, with an appearance by Post Malone. This looks like exactly what you'd expect from Peter Berg, which nowadays means some forgettable action nonsense. Berg keeps churning these out. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Peter Berg's Spenser Confidential, from Netflix's YouTube: Spenser (Mark...

Following one of the worst weekends of the year and the second straight weekend in which the top ten failed to generate a combined $100 million, this weekend is expected to see a single film top that figure all on its own. Disney will release Frozen II, the sequel to the 2013 hit that delivered over $400 million at the domestic box office and over $1.27 billion worldwide, and expectations are high. In addition to that, Sony will release A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Stx will release the action-thriller 21 Bridges, all of which hope to give the 2019 box office a much needed jolt.
Heading into the weekend Frozen II is already breaking records in terms of pre-sales with Fandango reporting back in early November the film eclipsed first day pre-sales for all other animated films in the company's 19-year history. Fellow online ticket retailer Atom Tickets reports the film broke the...

“Angel Has Fallen,” the action sequel starring Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman, earned $1.5 million at the box office Thursday from preview screenings at 2,600 locations. It opens on 3,286 screens this weekend.
Lionsgate is releasing “Angel Has Fallen” following up from the success of both “Olympus Has Fallen” in 2013 and “London Has Fallen” in 2016. It’s the widest release this weekend as the summer comes to a close, with Fox Searchlight’s horror and thriller “Ready or Not” having already opened on Wednesday.
The studio is projecting “Angel” to open in the low to mid teen range this weekend, with independent trackers estimating approximately $13 million. For a comparison, “London Has Fallen” earned only $850,000 in its debut opposite a then record-setting weekend for Disney’s “Zootopia,” but it ultimately raked in a $21.6 million opening. The original “Olympus Has Fallen” opened to $30.3 million and grossed $170.2 million worldwide.

Here’s good news for those needing a brief break from the superhero epics, franchise flicks, and assorted reboots. How about a good ole’ cop buddy comedy? I know we had variations of that staple in this summer’s so-so sequels Men In Black: International (basically two mismatched space cops) and Shaft. Luckily this new entry has a bit of a twist since it really focuses on the laughs (much like The Heat), and one of the guys isn’t a cop (shades of Midnight Run with the ex-cop bounty hunter and fleeing mob accountant). The civilian here was the star of the best comedy of 2017 (he nabbed an Oscar for co-writing it), and the “man” is a part of one of those big comics-inspired franchises (we just saw him in action ten weeks ago). And just what is up with the one-word title? Well, that’s the source of...

Updated With Statement From Stx Chairman-ceo Robert Simonds: Oren Aviv is leaving Stx. It was one of the films under Aviv’s watch at the studio.

-The economics of running a successful independent film studio can be wearing. As former Relativity Studios head Ryan Kavanaugh said recently, “You’re on the edge at all times. You need $1 billion in cash a year just to keep it going, between releasing movies and making movies… it’s very hard.”
And he would know. Kavanaugh last year saw his company essentially fold, for a second time, joining the likes of Open Road and The Weinstein Company as independent studios to fade from view in 2018.
Add that to the narratives of turbulence and scaling-back that have circled other indie production and distribution houses like Stx Entertainment and Annapurna Pictures, and the industry paints a picture of almost perpetual uncertainty among indies.
Still, experts caution that the box office performance of indies can’t be compared to that of major Hollywood studios. “They’re operating in a completely different universe from their major blockbuster studio counterparts,...

As studios double down on franchises, sequels, comic books, and events that pull audiences into bigger-better-brighter cinemas, movies that cost less than $50 million look like an endangered species. Studios already find it tough to justify risky, original dramas — like F. Gary Gray’s “Straight Outta Compton,” which cost $28 million and grossed $206 million worldwide. Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman Donna Langley nurtured that movie, and fought to make it. But not every movie has such a passionate champion.
“Tons of projects never even get to the greenlight meeting,” said one senior studio executive. “We can’t make the P&L work. The physical business [DVD sales] is declining at a rate of 10-11 percent.
