Heather Young’s drama “Murmur” has been selected as the winner of the narrative feature grand jury prize at the Slamdance Film festival.
The movie, which won the Fipresci Discovery Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival, stars Shan MacDonald as an older woman who, while performing community service at an animal shelter, begins compulsively adopting pets to ease her loneliness. Merawi Gerima’s first feature, “Residue,” won an Honorable mention from the jury and the Audience Award for Narrative Feature.
“The Grand Jury Award for Narrative Feature goes to Murmur, the quietly devastating debut feature from Canadian filmmaker Heather Young,” the jury said. “This richly detailed and deeply humane drama offers an insightful and sympathetic portrait of a lonely woman — affectingly portrayed by newcomer Shan McDonald — who goes to self-destructive extremes while attempting to fill the gaping void in her life. An Honorable Mention goes to Merawi Gerima’s mesmerizing first feature,...

We never knew that we needed a Mötley Crüe biopic in our lives, but now that it's happening, it feels so right. Based on Mötley Crüe's bestselling 2001 autobiography The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band, this long-awaited biopic will follow the story of the heavy metal band's rise from obscurity to super stardom and international fame during the course of the 1980s. You may not recognize all of the names of the cast, but even if the name Iwan Rheon doesn't sound familiar, you'll recognize plenty of the other shows and movies he's been in.
Thirty-three-year-old Welsh actor Iwan Rheon portrays Mick Mars - lead guitarist of Mötley Crüe - in the film, which makes sense, as the actor has been singing and songwriting since the age of 16. However, he actually got his start in theater, his first starring role being Moritz Stiefel in...

Exclusive: The Locke siblings are set for Locke & Key, Netflix’s series adaptation of Joe Hill’s comic, from Hill, Carlton Cuse and Idw Entertainment. Connor Jessup (American Crime) and British actress Emilia Jones (Utopia) have been cast as Tyler and Kinsey Locke, respectively. They join It‘s Jackson Robert Scott, who plays their brother Bode Locke.
Netflix in July gave a 10-episode series order to Locke & Key, which had been originally developed and piloted by Hulu. Netflix did not pick up the existing Hulu pilot, written by Hill, to series but set out to redevelop the scripts, with Aron Eli Coleite and Meredith Averill joining Hill and Cuse on the show’s creative team. It looks like Emma Watson has another solid looking film project for us to watch. It's called Colonia, and it's set in the '70s, and it tells the true story of a young woman who infiltrates a cult community to find her boyfriend. It looks like it’s going to be a pretty intense thriller.
The movie also stars Daniel Bruhl (Inglourious Basterds), Mikael Nyqvist (John Wick), Richenda Carey (Residue, Separate Lies), Vicky Krieps (A Most Wanted Man), August Zirner (The Counterfeiters), and Martin Wuttke (Inglourious Basterds). Here’s the synopsis:
Chile, 1973. Lufthansa flight attendant Lena (Watson) is in Santiago to visit her boyfriend, Daniel (Brühl), a talented graphic artist creating images in support of embattled President Salvador Allende. When Allende is violently ousted, General Augusto Pinochet’s forces begin rounding up dissidents. Daniel is taken to the remote stronghold of Colonia Dignidad (“Dignity Colony”), home to a secret...
