The 44th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards completed the second of two nights of awards with its doc prizes — awarding the outstanding documentary Emmy to HBO Max’s “The Janes.” The film also received the award for outstanding documentary direction and social issue documentary, among other categories.
Amazon Prime Video’s “Good Night Oppy” won for outstanding documentary writing. And Nat Geo’s “Retrograde” won several Emmys, including for cinematography, editing and current affairs documentary.
The kudos kicked off the first of two nights on Wednesday in New York, with CNN, Vice and the New York Times as among the big winners. CNN led the news portion of the Emmys, with ten wins — followed closely by Vice, with nine, and then the Nyt with five.
Vice’s wins were bittersweet: Eight of them were for the now-canceled groundbreaking program “Vice News Tonight.”

The first trailer has been released for Sean Penn’s upcoming war documentary Superpower, which chronicles Ukraine’s battle for independence against an invading Russia.
The Oscar-winning actor and longtime political activist made seven trips to Ukraine during the past two years for the project, which was co-directed by Penn and Aaron Kaufman. Filming started months before the war began in late 2021, with Penn journeying to Ukraine to learn more about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The film includes Penn venturing to the battle’s front lines and captures the moment when the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv was first attacked by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s bombs in February 2022.
“We set out to tell a lighthearted tale of this comedic actor who had been elected president of Ukraine and instead became witness to a historic leader and his country’s war for freedom,” Penn said. “When you step into a country of such incredible unity,...

The Blockbuster video store has become something of an endangered species since the company filed for bankruptcy in 2010 in the wake of growing streaming platforms like Netflix. As of 2017, only 10 franchise-owned Blockbuster stores exist in the U.S., and over 50% of them happen to be up and running in, of all places, Alaska. The state is home to six of the last 10 remaining video stores in America.

Last Week’S Podcast: ‘Better Call Saul’ Star Rhea Seehorn and Producer Peter Gould Discuss the Road to ‘Breaking Bad’ — IndieWire’s Turn It On Podcast
Shane Smith is a year into his multi-prong TV extension of the Vice brand and he remains bullish — as he should be. Vice Media just landed a $450 million investment from asset firm Tpg, which puts its valuation up to $5.7 billion. Not bad for a company that started as an edgy street magazine in Canada.
Now Vice Media’s assets include the TV network Viceland, the nightly HBO news program “Vice News Tonight” and the HBO documentary series “Vice,” several digital channels, and a film unit, among many other things. Viceland is on tap to expand into 80 territories. And in a world where Facebook and Google dominate, Smith is growing Vice’s library to be what he calls the largest collection of millennial intellectual property out there.
IndieWire’s Turn It On sat down with Smith to discuss the status of Vice’s expansion, plus running a company that prides itself on reporting the truth despite living in a time of a president who spreads lies and is stirring up hatred against the media. Listen below!
Smith has ambitious plans for Viceland over the next year and a half, as he looks to the future and realizes that only the strongest networks will be included in “skinny bundle” offerings.
“Online and TV, it’s all going to merge,” he said. “If you look at skinny bundles, it will be skinny bundles for cable but also Ott [over-the-top] providers. Unless you’re in on the skinny bundle on both sides, you’re going to be screwed. We want to get into the top 30 [of networks], that’s our goal for the next 18 months.”
How might Viceland reach that goal? “Having the largest library of millennial IP is important for us,” he said. Smith is also watching as other networks – such as Pivot and Esquire – fade away. “People are looking at us and mimicking what we’ve done,” Smith said of using a linear platform to build up that video library.
As for operating multiple operations with multiple partners (A+E, HBO), Smith admits that there is a bit of confusion out there. But he lays it out this way: News goes to Vice News via the HBO properties, and lifestyle goes to Viceland via A+E. “The good news for me as a megalomaniac is that I vote the board, 95% of the parent. I can Napoleon or Stalin it between the networks.”
While we live in an age of outrage, Vice built its brand on usurping tradition and occasionally courting controversy. “If you are trying to manage out of fear of what will happen, you’re not going to do anything new or innovative,” he said.
But Smith said Vice has gotten more careful: “In this day and age of opposition research, we have to be buttoned up and squeaky clean. At some point there has to be a backlash. Everyone goes after everybody. It becomes mud slinging.”
As for his partners, “I think they’d like us to be a little more controversial because controversy brings in ratings. They would like to see more Kim Jong-un [who appeared on the first episode of “Vice” on HBO] in the mix.”
How does Vice navigate the current Trump administration? “Early on we said we can’t fall prey to the crack cocaine that is Trump because if you get addicted to it you have to ween yourself off,” Smith said. “What we did say to differentiate ourselves was we were going to follow policy. Trump can tweet and do all these things but, what does it mean to have [Scott] Pruitt running the Epa who tried to shut down the Epa? What does it mean to have [Rick] Perry running the Department of Energy when he campaigned to undo the Department of Energy?
“What does it mean that the entirety of Trump’s cabinet are climate change deniers? Thats being lost in the headlines. We are literally marching backwards as fast as we can. Not just for the environment but social justice, Lgbtq rights, and were obsessed with lunatic fringe tweets. It’s the greatest reality show ever but the symptoms are dire.”
With Vice reporters risking their lives in hotspots around the globe, Smith is particularly sensitive to Trump’s attacks on the press.
“He calls the press the opposition, but that’s the press’ job,” Smith said. “Without free press there is no democracy, it’s just propaganda.”
Does Smith think he could get anything out of interviewing Trump? “Anyone who gets an interview with him is going to get something. He’s not like Putin, who’s sort of strategic and well thought out. He’s got buttons that you can push.”

Whether it’s a raised eyebrow from April Ryan or a triple blink of disbelief from John Roberts, each facial expression in this roundup tells a story of a reporter who has fallen prey to what some have dubbed “Spicer logic.”

H. Jon Benjamin is one of the most prolific voice actors working in TV today. As the central character on “Archer” and “Bob’s Burgers,” his growly baritone is as recognizable as it is an instant shot of personality for any character he voices. (Plus, how many actors can claim that their involvement in two shows led to a crossover scene that also doubles as a tribute to David Cronenberg’s “A History of Violence”?)
Six years ago, Benjamin added to his string of title characters, this time playing a fictional version of himself on the criminally short-lived Comedy Central show “Jon Benjamin Has a Van.” Part sketch show, part investigative news team parody, it helped give birth to a wave of comedian-led metashows that yielded some of the best comedies of the decade. It took the “Daily Show” correspondent model familiar to many of the network’s viewers and...

Vice, which can be found online, in print, and on TV, has shown itself to be eager to explore new platforms. Twitch, no longer just a platform for League of Legends gameplay, is hungry to broaden the scope of its non-gaming content. If you think that sounds like a match made in heaven, Vice agrees with you. At its 2017 NewFronts presentation it announced that it would bring several of its brands to Twitch after seeing success with a 72-hour gaming stream it launched last October.
The initial partnership between Vice and Twitch coincided with the launch of Waypoint, Vice’s foray into the world of gaming. Now, according to a sizzle reel at the NewFronts event, an expanded partnership will “[program] the entire Vice universe on Twitch.” Channels that are expected to show up on the popular streaming platform include Noisey, Motherboard, and Vice News.

Fans feed off television for different reasons. You might watch “The Americans” for the thrills or “Veep” to learn a few new insults, but the cast and creator of “Bob’s Burgers” made a compelling case for finding compassion through TV while speaking at PaleyFest Friday night.

Few recent images have shocked America as much as the shaky cell phone video of Charleston police officer Michael Slager shooting unarmed Walter Scott in the back eight times. Cable news analysis of the video painted a black-and-white picture of a corrupt cop, who after radioing in that Scott had grabbed his taser — supposedly justifying the shooting — initially tried to plant his taser next to Scott’s dead body. It’s story that culminated this week when the trial led to a hung jury.

Jon Stewart’s new animated project could finally premiere in the first quarter of 2017.
That’s the word from HBO programming president Casey Bloys, who says Stewart’s series of animated shows, set inside the world of cable news, might be ready “maybe by February or March but that’s a little bit up in the air. He’s building an entire animation studio. It’s a giant undertaking. Once it’s up and running it’s going to be a great platform for him.”
Bloys talked to IndieWire today about HBO’s Season 2 renewals of “Westworld,” “Divorce” and “Insecure,” but also addressed a few other nuggets about the channel – including the long-gestating Stewart project.

I have to say, the episode before this one left me a bit worried. It wasn't a bad episode, by any means, but I began to get this nagging feeling in the back of my head that the premise was starting to wear thin. The government was crippled, and rather than focus on getting the government up and running, they focused their attention on finding and killing the men responsible for the terrorist attack. I understood the idea of focusing on that aspect for the sake of TV drama, but it felt like a real missed opportunity.
I can't say this episode completely solved those concerns, but I can say it alleviated some of them.

I can't say this episode completely solved those concerns, but I can say it alleviated some of them.

On Vice News Tonight this week, HBO’s new alternative take on news investigates gun laws, Mexican borders and soda taxes. The recently launched presents a different take on nightly news bulletins with no anchor and no talking heads — just investigations and profiles which aim to delve into stories in depth. The Mexican border segment will be particularly timely with the Presidential election just weeks away following Donald Trump’s controversial comments about Mexicans and building a wall between the country and the Us. The gun law section will look at families affected by gun violence calling for changes to legislation. And...read more...

Today marks the fifth anniversary of the Sudden Departure, and to honor the disappearance of 2 percent of the world’s population, HBO is releasing new content for “The Leftovers.” That’s right: You may have lost your entire family five years ago, but today is a day to celebrate!
The party started early this morning when HBO released “The Leftovers” pilot online for free, allowing everyone to sample the pain, misery and brilliance of Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta’s 2014 debut. Fans who’ve seen it before can also go back and appreciate the dramatic unveiling of the Garvey family all over again, this time with the added insight of what happened when they were “at their best.”
But then things kicked into high gear with co-creator Damon Lindelof answering fan questions via “snail mail.” Though he refused to tell us where everyone went when they disappeared on Heroes Day (what a jerk,...

HBO’s latest high-profile series is “Westworld,” a sci-fi/Western hybrid that’s drawn attention for, among other things, its sonic qualities. As such, the fine folks at A Sound Effect have interviewed Thomas deGorter, an Emmy-winning sound editor whose prior credits include “Lost,” “Once Upon a Time” and “The Leftovers,” about his work on the show.

Those similarly genre-inclined projects all served as prelude to “Westworld” in the sense that their creators “wanted a real feeling” in creating their fictional worlds. “They didn’t want anything too sci-fi, too over the top,” says deGorter. “We wanted the sound to feel grounded and real. ” That approach carried over to this adaptation of Michael Crichton’s novel, which was also made into a movie in 1973. Whether you’re with her or want to make America great again, “Graves” is the timely political comedy you didn’t know you needed to see. For one, it’s on Epix, a network new to the scripted original series game, meaning you might not know where to find it. But more to the point, the series’ basic premise might make you suspect the show has a liberal agenda hiding behind faux-conservatism; a show made to lure in Republican voters only to convince them they’re wrong.

But that’s not the case — so far. While “Graves” may not be the barnburner debut series of, say, a “House of Cards,” it’s a big step up from Amazon’s “Alpha House.” Plus, through three episodes, the well-performed, warmly funny tale is also fair to both sides of the aisle.

“Westworld’s” second episode revealed a deeper level to the game that left many viewers with even more questions, as Liz Shannon Miller noted in her episode review.
Thanks to newcomers William (Jimmi Simpson) and Logan (Ben Barnes), audiences learned more about what it’s like to be a guest in the Western-themed amusement park, as well as that there’s more to these hosts than what’s pre-programmed in them. Ahead of “Westworld’s” third episode, titled “The Stray,” HBO released several new images and two new posters.

Spy dramas are a delicate balance of tactical thinking and explosive action, with the latter typically going down far less often than the former. Even more action-heavy espionage tales — your “Homelands,” your James Bonds — light a fuse with their lengthy scenes of stalking, talking and traditional spy-craft. Many also incorporate varying degrees of sensuality — your “Americans,” your “Night Managers” — as the mentally strenuous life of a spy can lead to physically exhausting nighttime excursions. The best of the genre usually links the two together: The thrill of the chase and satisfaction of success can be found on the streets and in the sheets.
“Berlin Station,” the first original drama series from Epix, has too little thrills of any kind. There’s a lot of exposition very clearly pointed toward real-world politics in the opening hour, but the show’s commentary is largely muted by contradictory choices in later episodes. Through...

Crossover episodes are a tricky business in general, what with combining various comedic stylings and separate ongoing storylines into one cohesive program. The very thought of two writers’ rooms joining up for one episode in a season filled with 20-plus is either a daunting task or an exciting creative opportunity. So Fox’s decision to shift the weight of the crossover story to one show — “New Girl,” as it turns out — may have been a safe choice, but the end result unevenly favored the show less tampered with.
Fans of the Zooey Deschanel-starring Fox comedy may have been a bit frustrated watching nearly 20 minutes of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” before their favorite fictional L.A. teacher showed up in New York. I watched Monday's premiere of HBO's new Vice News Tonight on my flat-but-bulky 42-inch TV, attached to the sort of six-tuner DVR your grandparents may have told you about. No time for the news? Then “Vice News Tonight” is for you.
While not as catchy as “the first modern news show,” the above tagline could certainly apply to the premiere episode of “Vice News Tonight.” Moving along at rapid speed with constantly shifting graphics, HBO’s debut half-hour glazed over most of its content in favor of covering a wide swath of topics. So fast were the reports thrown at the audience, “Vice News Tonight” didn’t even have time for an anchor. No one sat behind a desk. No one cracked wise. And no revolution occurred.
…yet.

HBO has a pretty big October ahead of it: The premium network is debuting a number of new shows next month, including the J.J. Abrams-produced Westworld, and web star Issa Rae’s Insecure. All of those new series—including Sarah Jessica Parker’s Divorce and the debut of its nightly newscast, Vice News Tonight—will be available next month to subscribers to the network’s HBO Now service.
Of course, it wouldn’t be October without a few horror films to back up those brand new shows, and HBO’s offering up some suitably spooky movies to serve as a backdrop for your Halloween. There’s the 2015 Poltergeist movie, for instance (and the 1982 original), or the old Justin Long screamer Jeepers Creepers. If you want a little silent melancholy with your horror, meanwhile, you could dip into I Am Legend or 28 Days Later, or go loud ...

Nearly three years since its release, “Zero Dark Thirty” is still causing controversy. Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal’s follow-up to their Oscar-winning “The Hurt Locker” about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden attracted attention well before it was released, with some Republican politicians attacking the movie for attempting to influence the 2012 presidential election. Tension continued to crank up when the movie was released, attracting criticism for what was perceived to be the film's ‘pro-torture’ stance, as well as the extent to which Bigelow and Boal had worked with the CIA, and the possibility that they obtained classified information came under intense scrutiny.
