Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave), Paul Rudd (Only Murders in the Building) and Kate Mara (Class of ’09) have been set to star in Friendship, a new comedy from Fifth Season and BoulderLight Pictures.
Pic centers on Craig Waterman (Robinson), who enjoys his life. He likes New Balance shoes, Subway sandwiches, and Marvel movies. He lives in the suburbs with his wife, Tami, and son, Steven. He’s happy to work at Universal Digital, a company that helps brands make their products more habit-forming. Craig sees no reason to change anything or make new friends… until weatherman Brian moves into the neighborhood. Mysterious yet friendly, macho but vulnerable, Brian (Rudd) transforms everything for Craig, but Craig’s obsessive and childlike nature threatens to ruin the friendship, and possibly everything else in his life.
Friendship is the first feature from director Andrew DeYoung, who also penned the script and is exec producing alongside Tracy Rosenblum.

It’s appropriate that Netflix dropped the sixth season of “Black Mirror” on June 15, the same day that Emmy voting began. The series isn’t eligible for this year’s awards, of course, but it has been a dominant force at the Emmys for years, even sparking a rule change that affects a number of other anthology programs this year.
And because of that rule change, it’s going to be a lot harder for any of those other programs — which include “Documentary Now!” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” — to be nominated for Emmys this year.
First, a little background. “Black Mirror,” created by Charlie Brooker and first airing in 2011, was inspired by the classic 1950s and ’60s series “The Twlight Zone,” in which Rod Serling used each episode to tell a different story — usually creepy or scary, usually with a twist, always with a moral. Back then,...

“For the most part, it is dramatic and fairly dark,” declares Alex Buono about the new limited category “Documentary Now!” has been moved to for the Emmy Awards. He continues, “There is a lot of murdery, dark, bleak storytelling in this category. I’m hoping there is room for a pretty silly absurdist comedy. His fellow showrunner Rhys Thomas adds, “We’re campaigning on a platform of joy, if you’re a fan of happiness you’ve got to vote for ‘Documentary Now!’” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Welcome to My Favorite Scene! In this series, IndieWire speaks to actors behind a few of our favorite television performances about their personal-best onscreen moment and how it came together.
When Cate Blanchett first guest-starred in “Documentary Now!”, the two-time Oscar-winner played a part suited for her elite status. Directors Alex Buono and Rhys Thomas needed to cast for Izabella Barta, a Marina Abramović-inspired performance artist whose renowned work includes everything from sitting inside a rotating clothes dryer to flinging her paint-soaked body against a blank wall. Blanchett, no ordinary thespian, was the logical choice. If she can bring immediate veracity to both Lydia Tár, a pseudo-fictional character, and Katharine Hepburn, a very real Hollywood legend, then she can instill comedic credence to a legend of the art world, while perfectly serving the episode’s winking parody.
Her return to “Documentary Now,” however, somehow extends the actor’s range even further.

Some people just want fundamentally different things from musicals. For those who want to see precision petticoat dancing and go home whistling a little ditty about vegetables, “Schmigadoon!” couldn’t have been more of a godsend. Made with the sun-drenched breeziness of a Technicolor classic from the first half of the 20th century, the show followed longtime couple Melissa (Cecily Strong) and Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) as they teetered on the edge of a breakup. But after spending some time in the magical, mythical world of Schmigadoon, some small-town wisdom from the locals helped them reframe their priorities and rekindle their love for each other. Lessons learned, smiles achieved.
“Schmigadoon!” Season 2 finds Josh and Melissa in a slightly different state. They’re married now, but something is a little off. Now finding themselves a second time in a mystical place at the end of a foggy bridge, their new temporary home...

The proliferation of television documentaries and mockumentaries has stretched the bounds of the format to imaginative extremes. Technology is testing our perceptions of ethical filmmaking, “Abbott Elementary” marks the latest hit sitcom to rely on talking heads for laughs, and “Documentary Now!” is an entire series made up of fake “docs” spoofing real documentaries. But whether you’re enjoying the explosion of documentary styles or fearing that a once-serious medium has jumped the shark, nothing can prepare you for the sheer lunacy on display in “Daisy Jones and the Six.”
Prime Video’s extensively misguided adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2019 novel makes its first and most notable blunder in attempting to map the book’s “oral history” template — which recounts the turbulent formation, success, and dissolution of a fictional ’70s rock ‘n’ roll band — onto a documentary structure. Pov has snapped up Sundance-winning doc “A House Made of Splinters,” helmed by Simon Lereng Wilmont and produced by Oscar nominee Monica Hellström (“Flee”). Shortlisted for the 95th Academy Awards, the acclaimed doc will have its broadcast premiere on pubcaster PBS as part of Pov’s 36th season starting in the summer.
A co-production involving Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Ukraine, “A House Made of Splinters” follows three children awaiting their fate in a temporary shelter in war-torn Eastern Ukraine.
As described by Variety’s Guy Lodge in his review: “Neglect and abandonment is what unites the young residents of the Lysychansk Center in Eastern Ukraine, where the children of unfit parents are sheltered for up to nine months while their next steps are decided.”
He added, “The camera waits with them, quietly observing a fragile limbo period from which life can go in any number of directions — including, for the least fortunate,...

The pitch: A team of some of comedy's most creative minds, including Fred Armisen, John Mulaney, Bill Hader, and Seth Meyers, set out to spoof documentaries in every way possible. Armisen has described the show as the "Weird Al of documentaries," while Hader has been hesitant to call the show's send-ups of various documentaries "parodies" because they're doing so much more than a simple satire. Each episode is a self-contained mini faux-documentary, with a few two-parter exceptions, and the subject matter ranges from showbiz docs like "The Kid Stays in the Picture" to the modern Netflix hit about a cult, "Wild, Wild Country." Early in Les Blank’s 1982 documentary “Burden of Dreams,” director-turned-subject Werner Herzog explains why he feels obligated to see a difficult production through to the end.
“It’s not only my dreams,” Herzog says about the movies he makes. “My belief is that all these dreams are yours as well, and the only distinction between me and you is that I can articulate them. That is what poetry or painting or literature or filmmaking is all about. […] It is my duty because this might be the inner chronicle of what we are. We have to articulate ourselves — otherwise, we would be cows in the field.”

Or so goes the running joke that ties together the fourth season of the satirical IFC comedy, back after a nearly four-year hiatus. Although Bill Hader, now in his “Barry” era, is no longer a part of the show, co-creator and star Fred Armisen remains as hilarious as ever with a top-notch troupe of guest stars that had me in stitches throughout the six-episode season.

A comedy series that parodies various documentaries is already a niche idea for a TV show, but for the makers of “Documentary Now!,” leaning into the specific is part of the fun – and part of what makes the show such a fan-favorite for its small but devoted fanbase.
“The good news is, I think we always make them knowing that it will be someone’s favorite,” executive producer, co-creator and writer Seth Meyers told TheWrap in an interview tied to Season 4. “And that is so true of the Agnes Varda [episode]. It may be sacrilege to say this: but I’d rather watch Cate Blanchett in a “Documentary Now!” episode than conducting the Berlin Phil while harassing young female virtuosos in the hysteria-tinged arthouse Oscar bait “Tár.”
Among the double Oscar winner’s finest roles was her take last season on the self-serious Serbian conceptual artist Marina Abramovich in the breathlessly hilarious “Waiting for the Artist.” Now, in the new Season 4 (or “Season 53” as the producers tease) premiering Oct. 19 on IFC, Blanchett returns. She plays a forlorn, bespectacled village hairdresser in a riff on beauty-themed docs, “Two Hairdressers in Bagglyport,” opposite “Succession’s” eat-her-young matriarch Lady Caroline Collingwood (Harriet Walter).
Perhaps it all comes down to taste, but I can’t imagine Blanchett better than the wildly freeing, reality-rooted comic performances to which she fully commits here. “Carol?” Not hardly.
The series is the brainchild of Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, Seth Meyers and Rhys Thomas.

Maybe take these “historical” stories with a grain of salt.
Oscar winner Helen Mirren returns as the host for Season 53 of IFC’s “Documentary Now!” series, premiering October 19 on IFC and AMC+. “Stories that dare to tell the truth have never been more crucial to our culture,” Mirren says in the trailer. “Now, more than ever, the world needs ‘Documentary Now!'”
The “true” series will parody famed documentaries “The September Issue,” “Burden of Dreams,” “3 Salons at the Seaside,” “When We Were Kings,” “Gleaners and I,” and “Beaches of Agnes” across its six-episode season. A special sneak peek at the mock “My Octopus Teacher” entry stars “Fleabag” fan-favorite Jamie Demetriou as a filmmaker who “who forms a deep, emotional, and financially taxing relationship with a monkey” and gets shirtless in a moment of passion. Titled “My Monkey Grifter,” the spoof spans true crime and bestiality.

Since the American remake of “The Office” hit small screens in 2005, its fabricated documentary style –– often referred to as the mockumentary format–– became a sensation in the United States. With both “Abbott Elementary” and “What We Do in the Shadows” nominated for Best Comedy Series this season, it’s clear that the mockumentary subgenre continues to find favor among Television Academy voters and general viewers alike. But what are the roots of the mockumentary, and what success has the relatively recent sitcom phenomenon had at the Emmys up to this point?
Precursors to the mockumentary format –– which refers to documentary-style filmmaking in comedic media, specifically –– can be found as early as the 1930s, with the Luis Buñuel film “Land Without Bread” documenting a real-life region in Spain, utilizing hyperbole in its narration to satirize the living conditions of the impoverished people of Las Hurdes, contrasting the narrator’s uninterested manner of speaking.

Documentary lovers, rejoice! The preeminent high-concept documentary parody series will be back soon after over three years off the air. As always, the new batch of episodes is set to include star-studded guest casts, clever writing from frequent series contributors, and wonderfully niche comedy meant to tickle the funny bones of the doc fans among us. As one of them, I have to admit that it's been a long three years spent sitting through great new docs (and "My Octopus Teacher"), envisioning the "Documentary Now!" parodies of them that seemed like they may never actually arrive.

Bill Hader had a stunningly good Emmy nominations morning. As Gold Derby’s official odds predicted, the performer reaped acting bids for starring in the comedy series “Barry” and for a guest appearance on the laffer “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” The multi-hyphenate also received recognition for writing and directing his series for the episodes “starting now” and “710N” respectively. He will almost certainly pick up a fifth bid in 2022 when the producer credits are finalized by the TV academy. But even without that pending nomination, Hader already has four this year, which brings his lifetime haul up to a whopping 24.

Bill Hader is no doubt one of the greatest living comedy writers. He's been in the writers room of legendary long-running series like "South Park" and "Saturday Night Live," and he co-created the hilarious satirical show "Documentary Now!" with fellow "SNL" alum Fred Armisen. His foray into a tonally ironic criminal thriller series, "Barry," has been met with rave reviews. Despite being a well-seasoned veteran of his field, Hader still runs into a bit of writer's block when it comes to one character in particular.

To grasp the level of commitment that Natasha Lyonne brought to the second season of “Russian Doll,” it makes little sense to rehash the tired survival narrative dredged up in countless profiles about how she overcame her drug years, an estranged relationship with her late parents, and the string of underwhelming acting gigs that followed “American Pie.”
Lyonne’s struggles have been a matter of public scrutiny for years. However, this personal understanding of her career trajectory tends to treat her latest act, as the co-creator and now sole showrunner of “Russian Doll,” like a sudden manifestation of latent creative talent.
