Charlie Hunnam has been cast in the lead role of the series adaptation of “Criminal” at Amazon Prime Video, Variety has learned.
“Criminal” is based on the graphic novels of the same name by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. The official description states that the series is “an interlocking universe of crime stories.”
Hunnam will star as Leo. The character is described as “A brilliant master thief who sees all the angles, and specializes in plans with no guns and no violence. Like a chess player, Leo thinks three moves ahead. Other crooks think he’s a coward, especially compared to his father Tommy, who went to jail for murdering the most feared man in the city, Teeg Lawless.”
Hunnam joins previously announced cast members Adria Arjona, Richard Jenkins, and Kadeem Hardison in the series.
This is not the first time Hunnam has starred as a criminal in a TV series or film.

Following its premiere at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival last year, “Femme” is finally set for theatrical release in the United States on March 22 in New York and March 29 in Los Angeles. The British thriller from Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping is adapted from their 2021 BAFTA-nominated short and stars Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and George MacKay. Utopia has acquired stateside distribution rights.
“Femme” follows Jules (Stewart-Jarrett), who is targeted in a horrific homophobic attack, destroying his life and career. Some time after that event he encounters Preston (MacKay), one of his attackers, in a gay sauna. He wants revenge.
With a critics consensus that reads, “Sexually charged and riddled with tension, Femme redresses the noir genre and may leave audiences biting their nails to the nub,” the movie holds fresh at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Read our full review round-up below.

Susan Sarandon, playing the U.S. Secretary of State Alaska Adams, gets the better of Bryan Brown, as the Australian prime minister, in a fast-paced verbal duel that represents the first footage from the Sean Penn-produced satirical comedy series “C*A*U*G*H*T.”
An elite team of Aussie soldiers is sent to an island nation to retrieve a secret file that has gone astray. Mistaken for Americans, they are captured by freedom fighters and produce a hostage video that goes viral. When the soldiers achieve celebrity status on social media, they realize that being caught might just be the best thing that could’ve happened to them.
“C*A*U*G*H*T” explores themes of identity, fame, and the absurdity of the viral age. “Why can’t we comedically deconstruct the intellectual ideas that humanity is facing right now?” says Kick Gurry who directs, produces and stars in the six-part series.

Femme, a queer thriller written and directed by Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choo Ping, had its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival and stars George Mackay and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett. The film explores the price of vengeance, the toll it can take on the psyche, and how that pressure can lead to some questionable decisions that may leave the viewer looking for explanations for these character’s actions.
Jules (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) Is a drag performer in East London under the name Aphrodite Banks. When taking a quick trip to the store after a show, he runs into Preston (George MacKay) a street thug covered in tattoos who mocks the way Jules is dressed (as they are still in drag costume and make up). The sinewy physicality and febrile intensity that George MacKay brought to films like True History of the Kelly Gang and 1917 gets amplified by ferocious self-loathing in Femme. Playing London thug Preston, festering deep inside the closet, MacKay is matched by Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as a drag queen he viciously attacks, who rises like a phoenix to play a dangerous game of revenge. Expanding their 2021 short film of the same name, debuting directors Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping bring plenty of provocative ideas about queer power dynamics and different forms of drag to the table. But the result is disappointingly sluggish, its payoff ineffectual.
One of the issues holding Femme back is uncertainty of tone. The writer-director team clearly means to maintain ambiguity about the intentions of Stewart-Jarrett’s character Jules, masking his end goal in real or feigned romantic intoxication. But that has the unfortunate side-effect of playing...

Laura Dern and science-fiction have often made for great bedfellows in the past, as evidenced by "Jurassic Park" and "Star Wars: The Last Jedi." For her return to the genre, "Morning," Dern is teaming up with "The Snowtown Murders" and "Macbeth" (2015) director Justin Kurzel. The latter's previous excursion into sci-fi with "Assassin's Creed" didn't work out so well, but you know what they say: If at first you don't succeed, try casting Laura F**king Dern instead and see what happens.
Dern is far from the only exciting cast member for "Morning," of course. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" veteran Naomi Ackie has also joined the film's ensemble on the heels of her performance as Whitney Houston in the musician biopic, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" (for which Ackie herself earned top marks; the rest of the movie less so). Between “The Babadook,” “Babyteeth,” and her own husband’s “True History of the Kelly Gang,” Australian actress Essie Davis has established herself as modern cinema’s most anguished mother. Nobody is better at — or more committed to — playing “good” parents in bad situations. She’s a widowed single mom who’s terrorized by a demonic manifestation of her own grief. She’s a Sydney woman who’s teenage daughter is coming of age and dying of cancer at the same time. She’s a loving matriarch of an infamous outlaw family who’s proud to watch her son get hanged for his crimes. It’s because Davis is so drawn to the agonies of unconditional love that she’s able to sell the beauty of it; no matter how wrenching and feral these performances might be, they all make it perfectly clear why having kids is worth the threat of...

Controversy is no stranger to Justin Kurzel. His 2011 debut Snowtown, an impressionist true-crime drama of harrowing power, dramatized Australia’s most notorious serial-murder case from the perspective of an abused teen molded into the killer’s accomplice––and in so doing inspired its fair share of appalled responses, along with rapturous praise. Subsequent success clearly hasn’t deterred him. After seeming to pivot toward ever-bigger productions in Hollywood and the UK with adaptational Michael Fassbender/Marion Cotillard vehicles Macbeth and Assassin’s Creed, Kurzel pivoted back to Australia and his first screenwriting collaborator Shaun Grant with 2019’s True History of the Kelly Gang, a punk-infused reimagining of the country’s foundational outlaw myth that, like Snowtown, complicates and punctures traditional renderings of Australian masculinity with nightmarish restlessness.

From its genesis, “Nitram” was designed to be a difficult film to watch. Tackling the events leading up to the 1996 Port Arthur mass shooting that took place in Tasmania, director Justin Kurzel (“True History of the Kelly Gang”) and writer Shaun Grant were treading similar waters as they did in their debut feature, 2011’s “The Snowtown Murders,” utilizing cinema’s ability to bring light to the pain of real-life atrocities and ask important questions as to how these violent men became the way they were, and what gave them the tools to take the actions they did.
Intentionally never using the real name of the perpetrator of this shooting, “Nitram” (the nickname by which the man is referenced) nevertheless centers its focus on him, as played by Caleb Landry Jones.

In 2021, Australia marked the 25th anniversary of the worst mass shooting in the country’s history. That shooting happened in April 1996 when a young gunman went on a shooting spree, killing 35 and injuring many others. This event is the inspiration of the critically acclaimed film “Nitram” by famed Australian director Justin Kurzel and writer Shaun Grant.

This year’s Oscars Best Cinematography category is another fascinating one, not only due to what was nominated, but also what wasn’t nominated. Of all the black-and-white movies released last year, Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth” was the only one to get a nom. “Belfast” Dp Haris Zamberloukos didn’t make the cut, despite being nominated by the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC).
Gold Derby’s oddsmakers have “Dune” ahead of the pack to win the Oscar with Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” close behind as a possible spoiler on Oscar night, but I’m not here to make predictions, as much as to shine a spotlight on the great work by all five nominees. Quality cinematography is clearly important to the creative success of any film. Here’s why these five contenders are worthy of their accolades.

Amazon now runs through Middle Earth.
The trailer for “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” debuted on Sunday during the Super Bowl, revealing for the first time how the wildly ambitious new series for Amazon Prime Video is bringing the world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth to life.
The 60-second teaser for the show, set thousands of years before Peter Jackson’s six feature films adapted from Tolkien’s novels, opens with the kind of awestruck, yearning dialogue familiar to anyone who has seen or read either: “Haven’t you ever wondered what else is out there? There’s wonders in this world beyond our wandering. I can feel it!”
The words appear to be spoken by a harfoot — an ancient ancestor of hobbits — played by Markella Kavenagh (“True History of the Kelly Gang”). The rest of the teaser unfurls at a brisk clip, presenting a dizzying procession of images.

The Port Arthur shooting of 1996 in Tasmania remains Australia’s deadliest incidents committed by a single person. That’s a horrifying piece of history to take on for a movie, but Australian filmmaker Justin Kurzel takes a slanted approach to the material by not showing the actual events, but instead what built to them through the eyes of the perpetrator. In his new film, “Nitram,” Caleb Landry Jones play the protagonist (here named Nitram) in a portrait of a psychopath brewing. Kurzel is naturally the fit for the material, as he has plumbed the depths of the dark side of Australian history before with “True History of the Kelly Gang” and “The Snowtown Murders.” Exclusively on IndieWire, watch the trailer for “Nitram” below.

Oscar winner Russell Crowe has entered the Spiderverse.
The “Gladiator” star has joined the cast of “Kraven the Hunter” in an unspecified role. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is starring in the title role as one of Spider-Man’s most deadly antagonists.
J.C. Chandor, who previously oversaw “All Is Lost” and “Triple Frontier,” is directing. Crowe is best known for his immersive roles in the likes of “The Insider” and “Master and Commander,” most of them pitched toward older audiences, but he’s no stranger to the world of superheroes and spandex. He previously played Jor-El, father to Superman, in Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel.” He’s also due to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Taika Waititi’s “Thor: Love and Thunder.”
For maximum confusion, “Kraven the Hunter” is not part of the official MCU, although he appears in Marvel comics. He is one of the characters who falls under Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man licensing deal.

One glance at the recent filmography from director Justin Kurzel shows the filmmaker’s penchant for switching up genres with nearly every project. From “Macbeth” to “Assassin’s Creed” to “True History of the Kelly Gang” to last year’s “Nitram,” Kurzel is unafraid to change things up with each and every new feature. And that’s going to continue with his next, a sci-fi feature titled “Morning.”

The film will have a hybrid release. It will premiere in theaters on March 30, 2022, while also debuting day and date on AMC Plus, AMC Networks’ streaming service. IFC has made films available to rent on the same day they hit cinemas, but this marks the first time that the indie studio has premiered a film simultaneously on its streaming arm.

Justin Kurzel’s exceptionally disturbing, horribly plausible “Nitram” opens with an excerpt from a 1979 Australian news report on firework accidents. A boy of about 12 is being interviewed from his Hobart hospital bed, and when the posh, compassionate voice of the presenter asks if the injuries he sustained will discourage him from playing with fireworks in future, he smiles a strange, sly smile, and says no. Years later, he is a young man (electrically played by Caleb Landry Jones) in the backyard of his parents’ house, setting off firecrackers while neighbors howl at him from their balconies. The intense discomfort of this nitroglycerine meditation on what makes a mass murderer is exactly that of watching a lit firework burn down in your hand toward its gunpowder base, unable to let go of it, transfixed by its snapping sparks.

Tyler Mitchell’s philosophy has always been “run to love”.
So when Film Victoria called him in early 2019 expressing admiration for the inaugural Impact accelerator program he ran with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer in the US, it was enough to plant the seed for an Australian version of the initiative.
“If someone loves what you are doing, you should embrace that,” he told If.
