If you're Dominican, chances are you're familiar with morir soñando, a simple but refreshingly crisp batida (milkshake) made with milk, orange juice, and vanilla extract. As simple as the three-ingredient drink seems, there's a reason it's given such a poetic name. "Morir soñando" translates as "to die dreaming," and after just one sip, one instantly feels like they've been transported into a dream - even if just for a matter of seconds. That was exactly the feeling Dominican American comedians and real-life besties Sasha Merci and Glorelys Mora, who both grew up in uptown (Merci specfically in the Bronx), wanted audiences to feel when they created their first all-Dominican comedy show back in 2019. On Monday, Nov. 6, the Morir Soñando show took over the historic United Palace, formerly Loew's 175th Street Theatre, in Washington Heights. It was the first show in the New York Comedy Festival to include an all-Dominican lineup,...

Exclusive: Four years after his fourth acclaimed comedy special The Great Depresh premiered on HBO, comedian Gary Gulman has set his latest, Born on Third Base, to debut on Max. Directed and produced by James Webb (Mark Normand: Soup to Nuts), his new hour will debut on the streaming platform this December.
In Born on Third Base, Gulman offers up his insights on a range of topics — from growing up poor to pretentious suffixes — all with a generous helping of his inventive humor and absurdism. While chronicling his childhood experiences with free school lunch programs and questionable dental care, and experiences with his eccentric Jewish American family, the stand-up makes an incisive swipe or two at billionaire-ism.

Exclusive: Los Angeles-based Premiere Entertainment Group has acquired worldwide rights to romantic comedy Plan B, starring Emmy-award winner Jamie Lee (HBO’s Crashing) and Jon Heder.
Premiere Entertainment will launch worldwide sales of the film at the upcoming American Film Market with all territories currently available.
Directed by first-timer Brandon Tamburri, from an original screenplay by Tamburri and Jean Monpere, Plan B follows the story of Piper, a young woman who, against better judgment, decides to sleep with a successful businessman and tells him he’s the father of her unborn baby after a one-night stand with her awkward neighbor leaves her pregnant.
The Joke Zero and Future Proof Films pic is produced by DJ Dodd, Erika Hampson, and Tamburri. Cast also includes Oscar Nominee Tom Berenger, Shannon Elizabeth, and SAG Award Winner Kate Flannery (NBC’s The Office). Rounding out the ensemble cast are Michael Lombardi (FX’s Rescue Me), Subhah Agarwal (HBO’s Westworld), Daniel K. Isaac (Showtime’s Billions), NFL star Vernon Davis, and Danielle Perez (A24’s Dicks: The Musical).
Full Synopsis reads: After a fun night out, rebellious writer Piper (Jamie Lee) drunkenly sleeps with her awkward neighbor, Evan (Jon Heder), and winds up pregnant. When she attempts to tell Evan the news, Piper quickly realizes that he’s not the long-term guy for her and the baby. After receiving news from publishing exec Jane (Kate Flannery) that her dream of a book deal is coming to fruition, she needs to find a stable relationship – and quick. Going against the advice of her best friend Maya (Subhah Agarwal), Piper opts to keep the pregnancy a secret until she can find a more successful guy to sleep with and hopefully start a family.
After a few failed and comical attempts at finding a match, Piper stumbles into Cameron (Michael Lombardi), a financial advisor and regular at the café she works at. Everything appears to be going as planned as Cameron falls for Piper and is ecstatic about the pregnancy. Cameron introduces Piper to his parents Joe (Tom Berenger) and Diane and fends off advances from his flirty boss Anne (Shannon Elizabeth) along the way. While juggling her double life, Piper continues to bump into her neighbor Evan, who has no idea that he is the father of her soon-to-be-born baby. However, Piper’s evil scheme starts to unravel when she starts second-guessing herself, realizing that she could be making the biggest mistake of her life.
Carlos Rincon, SVP of acquisitions at Premiere Entertainment, negotiated the deal with producer DJ Dodd on behalf of Joke Zero and Future Proof Films.
“This film has been a labor of love for me, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Premiere is the perfect partner for us, and I’m excited to be working with them,” Tamburri said.
DJ Dodd, Owner of Future Proof Films, added: “We are very proud of the film we’ve made through the immense hard work of all of our cast and crew. Making this film has been a fun ride, and we can’t wait to introduce it to the world.”...

Finnish series creators are ready to laugh – also at themselves.
“While cultures vary, a fish-out-of-water experience is universal,” says writer Beata Harju, behind “Lay Low and Don’t Be Fabulous” about a woman who just can’t let go of her ex. Or of her Finnish roots.
“Finland is the perfect setting for a culture-clash comedy, because our networking events are so silent, you can hear the crunch of a cucumber.”
The show, set to bow in the Focus on Finland showcase at Mipcom, won’t be the only one led by complex female protagonists. In “True North,” three women fight for power after Egyptian refugee, Layla, joins a catering company with a secret.
“Through placing the story in [Spain’s] Marbella, where international jet-setters and social media celebrities live next to refugees and locals struggling to get by, we create a unique story around some of the inequalities of today’s society,...

Lane is the latest comedian to work with Studio71, which is growing its stand-up roster; it already works with the likes of Trixie, Trevor Wallace, Bob the Drag Queen, Mayim Bialik, Josh Wolf, Brittany Furlan and Tim Chantarangsu.
He has more than 3M followers on social media and his last self-released special Hair Plugs & Heartache has been gaining traction on YouTube. When choosing a man, it’s all about selecting the right vintage.
ABC has released a new promo for The Golden Bachelor, a senior-citizen version of the hit dating franchise. The promo introduces us to Gerry (that’s pronounced “Gary”) Turner, a 71-year-old widow who is ready to find love again after his wife of 43 years passed away in 2017. The video — which you can watch above — shows us Gerry getting dressed in a suit as a narrator extolls the virtues of age when it comes to cheese and wine, with Gerry blowing the dust off of a bottle of vino with a 1951 vintage.

Of all the films screening at the Galway Film Fleadh on the West Coast of Ireland, one stands out as having the sort of wild premise that should instantly pique the interest of anyone with a penchant for comedy of the more ridiculous variety.
Apocalypse Clown — getting its world premiere on Friday before screening at Canada’s Fantastia Festival later this month and ahead of its U.K. and Ireland release on Sept. 1 — may even boast the most “Wtf?” film plotline of the year, with a story set in the aftermath of a mysterious blackout that plunges Ireland into anarchy and following a group of washed-up clowns, brought together following a mass brawl at a funeral, who traverse the country in chaotic and sometimes bloody fashion for one last shot at their (far-fetched) dreams. A quiet arthouse drama, this is not.

If there’s one thing we’re not short of on this strange little island, it’s funny people. When life is good, we’re laughing. When things get weird, we’re laughing. And when everything falls apart, somehow we’re still laughing.
From top bants to gallows humour, you can always rely on the British to bring the LOLs, and from Charlie Chaplin through to Monty Python and Fleabag, British comedy seems to translate pretty well worldwide too, meaning there’s plenty on offer on Netflix.
So if you’re sick of rewatching the same old sitcoms and looking for fresh laughs, we recommend these British comedy hidden gems on Netflix:
[All the following are available on both US and UK Netflix, unless stated]

For most of us, an Std probably wouldn’t be our first choice for the basis of a sitcom, but that’s why Lovesick is so genius: it takes a usually no-laughing-matter concept and stuffs it full of refreshing honesty,...

Who doesn’t want a look at the inner workings of Pete Davidson’s mind?
Peacock released the trailer for “Bupkis,” its new series starring Davidson and which is based on his life.
In its half-hour episodes, “Bupkis” shows Davidson’s life in a heightened, fictionalized manner. Combining grounded storytelling with unfiltered and absurd elements, the eight-episode show will depict Davidson’s unique worldview.
The trailer opens with quick clips of tabloid headlines about Davidson and with him saying, “I googled myself yesterday. People think I’m, like, a joke for some reason.”
But then fans immediately see Joe Pesci sitting across from Davidson in a diner, callously telling his on-screen grandson, “They think you’re a joke because you are a joke.”
After the brief shot of Pesci and Davidson, the trailer then features a fast-paced montage of Davidson with a slew of guest stars. Fans will have to...

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is currently developing a “Tomb Raider” series at Amazon, TheWrap has learned. The news comes a day after it was announced that the Emmy-winning “Fleabag” creator had re-upped her deal at the studio, where she is also readying the show “Sign Here,” based on Claudia Lux’s debut novel of the same name, and another untitled project that’s being kept under wraps.
Waller-Bridge is set to write for the series, not portray the archeologist-adventurer character of Lara Croft. Previous adaptations of the video game have seen the role played by Angelina Jolie (in the 2001 and 2003 films) and Alicia Vikander (in the 2018 iteration). Waller-Bridge will also serve as executive producer on the project along with Ryan Andolina and Amanda Greenblatt, who recently departed their roles as head of comedy and drama and head of overall deals, respectively, to form a production company that currently has a deal with Amazon.

Before he became a superhero in "Eternals," a runaway Jedi in "Obi-Wan Kenobi," or even the hapless rideshare driver Stu in "Stuber," actor Kumail Nanjiani worked his way up through the industry thanks to his stand-up comedy in New York City. The unbelievable story of how he and his wife, creative partner, and fellow screenwriter Emily V. Gordon ultimately met and fell in love defies expectations, which naturally led to the semi-autobiographical dramedy "The Big Sick" in 2017 (you can read /Film's original review by Ethan Anderton here).
Co-written by the couple, produced by Gordon, and starring Nanjiani as himself alongside Zoe Kazan as Emily, the hit film dramatizes the pair's made-for-movies journey, navigating their early careers, Gordon's diagnosis of Still's disease, and at least one incredible 9/11 joke that still feels like a mini-masterpiece in writing and comic timing. Watch it, if you haven't yet!

"Oh, let's talk about jokes," Vanessa Ramos says. "I only ever want to talk about jokes." The writer's first series as showrunner, "Blockbuster," is packed to the brim with them. There are even gags audiences might not catch at first glance, including a subplot about a missing person that basically plays out in the background.
"Blockbuster" isn't Ramos' first experience with workplace comedy. Previously, she wrote for "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and "Superstore," not to mention produced and penned a handful of standout episodes from HBO's "Crashing." During lockdown, she had the idea for "Blockbuster." The ensemble comedy, which stars Randall Park ("WandaVision") and Melissa Fumero ("Brooklyn Nine-Nine"), taps into some nostalgia for the days of roaming video stores. Although the Netflix show's tone is mostly nice and light on its feet, it also has its moments of strange references and bizarre subplots. Recently, Ramos told us about how a few of those jokes came about.

Exclusive: Comedian, actor, producer and podcaster Andrew Schulz (Infamous) has signed with CAA.
One of the biggest and most influential names in comedy today, the business-savvy Schulz has been credited with helping to spur democratization in comedy. He’s among those who have proven that comics looking to retain ownership of their material — by self-releasing on platforms like YouTube — can achieve equal or greater success, both financially and in terms of the building of an audience, in comparison to those who strike deals with streamers or networks.
Schulz recently sold more than 150,000 tickets as part of his 10 month, sold-out Infamous Tour, which he capped off by selling out the 6,000-seat Radio City Music Hall twice. He premiered his subsequent special Infamous exclusively via the live-streaming social media platform Moment House in July before releasing it for free on YouTube.

Your eyes do not deceive you. Joe Pesci is making a rare acting return, opposite Pete Davidson no less. Our first look at “Bupkis” has arrived.
The Oscar-winning Pesci plays Davidson’s grandfather in the upcoming Peacock comedy series, which chronicles a heightened, fictionalized version of Pete Davidson’s real life. Combining grounded storytelling with “absurd elements from the unfiltered and completely original worldview for which Pete is well known,” the series is written by, starring and executive produced by the “SNL” alum.
Pesci was last seen onscreen in 2019’s “The Irishman,” for which director Martin Scorsese worked hard to pull the “Goodfellas” actor out of retirement. Before that film, Pesci had not been seen onscreen since 2010’s “Love Ranch,” which was preceded by 2006’s “The Good Shepherd.”

Madeline Wise has quite the resume.
Currently starring in the CBS hit So Help Me Todd, Madeline has also appeared in Single Drunk Female, Star Trek: Picard, and Crashing, among others. Those are some lofty series to be attached to, and Madeline's star is only rising.
Madeline was kind enough to take some time out of her day to talk to me about everything So Help Me Todd, including what it's like to work alongside the brilliant Marcia Gay Harden, what it was like joining the iconic Star Trek franchise, and what she's currently watching on television.
This was a lovely conversation, and Madeline was insightful and nothing short of fantastic to speak with. Enjoy!
Could you tell me a little about So Help Me Todd and your character, Allison?
Sure. It's a fun series. So Help Me Todd is sort of a wacky hybrid of a legal procedural and a family drama.

Exclusive: Lauren Lapkus (Orange Is the New Black) is set as the executive producer and star of the indie comedy Another Happy Day, which Nora Fiffer wrote and is directing for Red Squirrel Films, in her feature debut.
The postpartum depression comedy, currently in production in Chicago, is loosely inspired by the writer-director’s experience becoming a mother. Lapkus will play Joanna, a “total nut” who is wearing new motherhood so awkwardly that she remarks candidly “I’m not really a mom, I just have a baby, you know?” This new mom is also an artist who isn’t making any art, and feels truly terrible at taking care of her newborn, as she stumbles through her days. She can’t get her old job back, her old friends have moved on without her, her husband thinks he’s a better mother than she is, she’s terribly sleep deprived,...
