extraordinary performances

The good news is that this obscure jewel of a series has some of the most extraordinary performances I have ever seen, and many viewers are missing out.

The bad news is that the writers have done a sharp u-turn from the "promised" arcs of season 1.

Let's go back to S01e01. Grillo's character, on his way to work, gets into a road rage incident with a neighborhood character, and this simple arc launches a series which seems to promise both MMA action and quirky character arcs.

And for season 1, it delivers. Especially Joanna Going's character, one of the most unusual mothers in the history of TV drama.

Season 2 is another kettle of fish.

Somehow the MMA angle is disappearing and we are getting deeper and deeper into a daytime soap.

Not saying this is a bad thing. But it sure is a different thing.

Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers ahead! We are used to Christina's poor decisions having an effect on her sons. Then comes Ava, she instantly attaches herself to Jay who is at the pinnacle of his career. She makes his character not likable and pretty much her only goal in life is to have a partner to lay in a room all day with her and be high. Good riddance to the dead weight that she brought.
