[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the A Gentleman in Moscow finale.] A Gentleman in Moscow‘s series finale honored its source material with an ambiguous ending. The episode, which aired on Sunday, May 19 on Showtime, revealed what happened after Count Alexander Rostov (Ewan McGregor), Anna (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Sofia (Beau Gadsdon), and the rest of their friends at the Hotel Metropol launched their plan to get Sofia out of Russia. This also led to Rostov walking out of the hotel’s front doors — an act that’s been paired with the threat of death for decades as he carried out his house arrest in the high-end hotel. After much planning, Sofia’s school trip became the catalyst for her escape in Season 1 Episode 8, “Adieu.” While some roadblocks set her back and threatened her safe departure, the plan worked out in the end. The signal — every phone in the Metropol lobby going off in quick succession — was...

Over the past few months, Netflix has been busy treating its audience to new big-budget projects, from the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen to the much-hyped 3 Body Problem and Ripley with Andrew Scott. But as high-profile as Netflix's premieres are, they seem to pale in comparison to what competing streaming services are offering.

Great locations, experienced crews and juicy incentives have made UK studios increasingly attractive, and brought Hollywood stars to the unlikeliest locations. But with budgets falling and a lack of skills training, could the bubble be about to burst?

Despite the option to skip them altogether, opening credits in the streaming era don’t have to be an afterthought. Before we even clock eyes on Ewan McGregor’s dazzling (real) mustache and voluminous curls as Russian count Alexander Ilyich Rostov in A Gentleman in Moscow, the melancholy strains of Federico Jusid’s theme song and the Art Nouveau illustrations immediately give a sense of time and place. The series begins in 1921, with title cards offering a brief history of events since the Bolsheviks snatched power from the elite ruling class. Rostov is a relic of the world before the 1917 Russian Revolution, but the opulent Metropol Hotel is a slice of the past entwined with the present. Ben Vanstone's eight-part series achieves this delicate ideological balance through its grounding performances, impressive world-building, and mix of whimsy and narrative high stakes.

Louis Gossett Jr. gave signature performances on the small screen (as Fiddler in Roots) and the big screen (as a very demanding drill sergeant in An Officer and a Gentleman). But the Oscar- and Emmy-winning actor, who died yesterday at the age of 87, had a remarkably prolific career that included scores of roles in TV, film and on the stage, including Broadway and Off Broadway.

Louis Gossett, Jr., a trailblazing actor who became the first Black man to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, sadly passed away late Thursday night on March 28, 2024. He was 87 years old. The news was reported by the Associated Press, who confirmed his death through the late actor's nephew Robert.
Most recently appearing in Warner Bros.' "The Color Purple" remake and in HBO's "Watchmen" series, Gossett, Jr. is perhaps most well known for his award-winning turn as drill instructor Emil Foley in 1982's "An Officer and a Gentleman." Additionally, he won an Emmy award for his role in the popular 1977 miniseries "Roots" and went on to earn widespread acclaim and recognition on both television and movies, racking up numerous Primetime Emmy Awards over the years. Hotels are strange, contradictory, but often wonderful places. They are permanent structures primarily designed for temporary lodging. They can offer more luxurious furniture and amenities than you get at home, yet you’ll rarely sleep as well as you do in your own bed. Dreams in hotels tend to be weirder and more vivid — there’s a reason so many of Tony Soprano’s more memorable nightmares either occurred while he was at a hotel, or depicted his unconscious self staying in one — and the setting is evocative enough to...

Real-life married couple Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead fall in love again on screen in A Gentleman in Moscow. An adaptation of Amor Towles‘ best-selling novel, the actors play Count Alexander Rostov and film star Anna Urbanova, whose romance takes decades to brew as Alexander spends life under house arrest in Moscow’s Hotel Metropol. The Count finds himself in this gilded cage in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution. The nobleman’s life was spared, but he will be shot on sight if he steps foot outside of the hotel. The hotel’s staff and guests become Rostov’s family as he remains determined to make the best of his circumstances, but flashbacks to his troubled past provide a stark reminder of the pain underneath this stately and sensitive man. Anna, a frequent guest of the hotel, immediately catches the Count’s eye. Their story is part of...

Plot: Count Alexander Rostov, in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, finds that his gilded past has placed him on the wrong side of history. Spared immediate execution, he is banished by a Soviet tribunal to an attic room in the opulent Hotel Metropol and threatened with death if he ever sets foot outside again. As the years pass and some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history unfold outside the hotel’s doors, Rostov’s reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery. As he builds a new life within the walls of the hotel, he discovers the true value of friendship, family and love.
Review: Ewan McGregor is a singular talent. The acclaimed actor can sing, share the screen with Winnie the Pooh, fight Darth Vader, and play a convincing heroin addict. He has also proven himself adept at sharing the screen with family members.

Injecting traces of whimsy into a historical tragedy is a precarious thing. If you do it well, you get Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See, but if you do it poorly, you get Netflix’s All the Light We Cannot See. And it isn’t some clear-cut empirical thing, since Life Is Beautiful and Jojo Rabbit are Oscar-winning classics for some and unbearable pablum to others. (Me, I am Others.)

Amor Towles’s A Gentleman in Moscow was published in 2016, five years before Russia’s top opposition leader (and Vladimir Putin’s fiercest foe) Alexei Navalny returned to his homeland and was immediately imprisoned. Showtime’s eight-part adaptation of Towles’s novel, about a Navalny-like political prisoner in Russia, serendipitously makes its premiere not long after Navalny died in a Russian prison camp. But the comparisons between reality and fiction largely end there. A Gentleman in Moscow is a glossy, romanticized series that mostly suggests rather than shows the horrors of a totalitarian regime.
The story of the show echoes Navalny’s with its occasionally tin-eared, though still potent, portrayal of an unlikely dissident who refuses to abandon his country but has limited means to fight for it. In 1921, the perky-mustached Count Alexander Rostov (Ewan McGregor) is given a life sentence by a Soviet court for vague counterrevolutionary reasons. But instead of a gulag,...

What does a great screen romance need? It requires chemistry, that intangible frisson between the interested parties. It needs the tension of a will-they-won’t-they, where narrative circumstance and personal foibles threaten to keep the destined duo apart. And it really soars if you have actors willing to go there, putting everything on the line to hook you deeply into the emotional stakes. For the multiple-decade-spanning love story that spins through A Gentleman In Moscow, the upcoming series adaptation of Amor Towles’ acclaimed novel, all three of those factors were bolstered by the casting of Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead – whose real-life relationship deepens the on-screen bond between Count Rostov and Anna Urbanova, playing out against the backdrop of the Russian Revolution.

Scottish star Ewan McGregor will receive this year’s Honorary Dragon Award, a lifetime achievement honor, at Sweden’s Göteborg Film Festival.
McGregor will attend the Göteborg event, which runs from Jan. 26 to Feb. 4, and will present the Nordic premiere screening of his latest feature, Mother, Couch. Ewan McGregor saw the strike coming in June, just as filming on his Paramount+ series A Gentleman in Moscow was nearing the finish line.
Like McGregor’s character, a Russian aristocrat under house arrest in a Soviet hotel, the shoot had nowhere to go. Continuing to film without a leading man was not an option, so McGregor, sporting a carefully clipped mustache, gathered colleagues to deliver the news many dreaded: the show would not go on.
Despite a brief reprieve as SAG-AFTRA extended talks with studios in early July, A Gentleman in Moscow eventually shut up shop last week. It had just seven days left to shoot. “He was gutted,” says someone in the room as McGregor gave a brief address to cast and crew.

Warning: contains spoilers for Bridgerton seasons one and two, and for book three ‘An Offer From a Gentleman’.
Bridgerton season one ended with romantic leads Daphne and Simon married and at peace (having worked out their issues in time for their sex life to actually bear issue) and with Anthony Bridgerton in crisis and cued-up to lead the next season. The Viscount’s opera singer mistress had moved on, having made the tough decision for them both in the knowledge that Anthony’s offer of a society-defying marriage could never work for a man of his responsibilities. So the stage was set for Anthony’s season two search for a Viscountess.
By the season two finale, Anthony and his true love Kate were happily spliced and amusing themselves with sexy rom-com bickering, but who should be in the ‘readying for next season’ crisis? Not Luke Thompson’s next-in-line brother Benedict...

As part of Deadline x Rolling Stone, a special issue of our AwardsLine print magazine dedicated to music in cinema, Noel Murray runs through the 20 Best Oscar music moments.
For most of the history of the Academy Awards, the musical numbers have been at once glitzy and sappy, featuring fresh-scrubbed young dancers in spangled costumes, spinning and kicking behind a couple of old Hollywood stars. But every now and then, amid all the schmaltz, the producers of the Oscars telecasts have set aside some airtime to showcase some of the best singers and the snappiest songs of their eras.
Beginning in the 1970s especially, the Academy began opening up more to rock ’n’ roll and R&b, around the same time that the producers started asking the Best Original Song nominees’ original artists to perform. Ever since, the show has featured some the music industry’s biggest stars, alongside a...

"You don't do larger-than-life things in real life. I am fighting with 10 people at the same time and I am breaking things (in the film). After action and romance, Sidharth Malhotra is all set to turn intense for debut director Abhay Chopra’s Ittefaq, which is an adaptation of Yash Chopra’s 1969 film of the same name.
