James Cameron has already made plans for the sixth and seventh 'Avatar' films. The 69-year-old director has the future of the epic sci-franchise mapped out until the release of 'Avatar 5' in 2031 and revealed that he has ideas beyond that – even though he is likely to have stepped away from directorial duties by then.James told People magazine at the Saturn Awards on Sunday (04.02.24): "We're fully written through movie five, and I've got ideas for six and seven, although I'll probably be handing the baton on at that point."I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we're enjoying what we're doing. We're loving it. We get to work with great people."Cameron – whose flick 'Avatar: The Way of Water' picked up four awards at the ceremony in Los Angeles - explained that he wants the 'Avatar' franchise to match the...

Even though Avatar 5 isn’t out until 2031, James Cameron is thinking about Avatar 6 and Avatar 7 as well. It may never end.
Wherever you stand on the Avatar movies, it does feel as though cinema has lost a fair number of interesting James Cameron films down to Cameron’s two decade commitment to the franchise.
It’s not that the films aren’t popular, and it’s not that the film aren’t loved. Two movies into the series, and there’s more than four billion in box office takings in the bank already. Furthermore, James Cameron is deep into making Avatar 3, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, the latter of which is now scheduled for release in – gulp – 2031.
Yet the Cameron brain is not stopping there. He’s been chatting to People in a new interview, and admitted that even when this current run of movies is done, he...

James Cameron confirmed to People magazine that he already has ideas locked in for “Avatar 6” and “Avatar 7,” which would expand his record-breaking franchise well beyond the planned 2031 theatrical release of “Avatar 5.” The Oscar winner is currently in post-production on “Avatar 3” and still has around half of “Avatar 4” left to shoot. Disney has the next three “Avatar” movies on its theatrical release calendar. The future of the franchise beyond “Avatar 5” is taking shape in Cameron’s head.
“We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point,” Cameron told People magazine. “Mortality catches up. But I mean, we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We’re loving it. We get to work with great people.”
It’s clear the “Avatar” franchise will continue even if Cameron is not in the director’s chair.

Released in 2009, director James Cameron’s film Avatar became the first movie to officially gross more than $2 billion. Then it took him thirteen years to get a sequel into theatres, so it wasn’t clear if the follow-up was going to be able to replicate that success. But then, sure enough, Avatar: The Way of Water also grossed more than $2 billion, paving the way for not only Avatar 3 (which is scheduled to reach theatres on December 19, 2025) but also Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 – which will be released on December 21, 2029 and December 19, 2031, respectively. What we know about the future sequels so far is that Avatar 3 will introduce villainous Na’vi known as the Ash People, Avatar 4 will “go nuts in a good way“ (following a six year time jump), and Avatar 5 will involve a journey to Earth. If things keep going this well as the franchise continues,...

Get ready, because we're going back to Pandora! Well, at least the cast is, because Sam Worthington confirmed in an interview with People Magazine that the next "Avatar" movie will go back to shooting soon.

Sam Worthington told People magazine at the premiere of his Netflix heist thriller “Lift” that the cast of James Cameron’s “Avatar” films are gearing up to return to production in February. The director is currently deep into post-production on “Avatar 3,” which Disney has given a 2025 release date. The Avatar creator James Cameron has opened up about the many trips to Pandora that are on our horizon.
James Cameron has spoken to People magazine where amongst other things, he confirmed that the third Avatar film is still on track for a December 2025 release.
Cameron and his team were able to get most of the shooting for Avatar 3 (and some of the fourth film) done in the space between the pandemic and this year’s strikes. As such, the filmmaker reckons that so far work on the third instalment has been much smoother than with its predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water.
“Three is actually much more straightforward than two,” says Cameron.
“Two, we got hit with the pandemic in the middle of it and we were interrupted, and then we had to reboot and reboot the production and all that sort of thing. And it was a scramble to get it done.

James Cameron recently told People magazine that “Avatar 3” is “right on track” for its December 2025 release date. The film has been worked on since before the second “Avatar” movie, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” opened in theaters in December 2022 and became the third-highest grossing film in history with $2.3 billion worldwide. Cameron shot “Avatar 3” and chunks of “Avatar 4” concurrently with “The Way of Water” to ensure age continuity among his characters.
“We did the [motion capture] capture on three and the live-action photography on three as an intermingled production with [‘Avatar: The Way of Water’], and we even did part of movie four because our young characters are all going to have a big time jump in movie four,” Cameron said.

James Cameron revealed last month that he’s currently knee deep in the “very hectic” post-production of “Avatar 3.” Neither the director nor Disney is ready to unveil the title for “Avatar 3,” but it sounds like it won’t be “The Seed Bearer” as Cameron once considered.
The titles for Cameron’s “Avatar” sequels have become social media fodder ever since November 2018 when the BBC reported the four movies would have the following names: “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Avatar: The Seed Bearer,” “Avatar: The Tulkun Rider,” and “Avatar: The Quest for Eywa.”
Cameron told Entertainment Tonight in 2019: “I can neither confirm nor deny — alright, here’s what I’ll tell ya: Those titles are among titles that are in consideration. And no final decisions have been made yet.”

Movie maker James Cameron was decades away from creating the Avatar franchise while he was developing the TV show Dark Angel. But working on the television series had an unforeseen influence on Avatar down the line.

Cameron decided to explore the small screen in the year 2000 with the Fox sci-fi series Dark Angel. The show offered Jessica Alba her big break, and featured other familiar faces like NCIS’ Michael Weatherly and Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles. Dark Angel saw Alba playing a genetically enhanced superhuman in a futuristic scene with a somewhat similar tone to Terminator. One of the reasons he took the story to TV instead of film was because producing television offered more creative energy.

It has been an odd year for Disney at the box office. The studio has had more misfires than it has had successes — and even some of those successes were pretty muted. "Elemental" is perhaps the prime example as Pixar's latest seemed straight-up doomed on arrival before having a miraculous turnaround, leading it to a $496 million worldwide take against a $200 million budget. Most of the studio's other big-budget films haven't been quite as lucky. To illustrate that point, James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water" actually remains one of the studio's highest-grossing movies of 2023 despite the fact that it was released in 2022.
"The Way of Water" hit theaters on December 16, 2022, capping off a 13-year journey for the sequel. It made a ridiculous amount of money before the calendar rolled over to 2023 and ultimately wound up as the third biggest movie of all time with $2.32 billion to its name,...

James Cameron described post-production on “Avatar 3” as “hectic” during a recent New Zealand press conference moderated by 1News chief correspondent John Campbell. Cameron used the discussion to celebrate New Zealand as his main production hub, announcing his plan to make movies there “indefinitely” and revealing that he will finally become a New Zealand citizen in 2024. Cameron has been working in New Zealand since 2005, when the first “Avatar” movie started development.
“We’re into a very hectic two years of post-production right now,” Cameron confirmed when asked about the third “Avatar” movie. “So it will be Christmas of 2025.”
Disney announced in June that Cameron’s three upcoming “Avatar” sequels were being pushed back on the release calendar yet again, extending the franchise into 2031. The studio, which acquired the franchise after its merger with Fox, had originally planned to release Cameron’s additional “Avatar” sequels two years apart from one another,...

In June, Avatar fans learned that while they’ll get the chance to return to Pandora with Avatar 3, the wait will be longer than anticipated. Initially, the film was set to release in 2024, with two additional films slated for 2026 and 2028. Now, everything has been pushed back. Avatar 3 will be released in December 2025, and the other films won’t see the big screen until 2028 and 2031, respectively. So, what is the big hold-up? Filming isn’t the issue; most of Avatar 3 has already been filmed.

The success of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" this summer was a sign that the box office has more or less fully recovered from the decimation of the Covid-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, Hollywood's studios have decided to celebrate this victory by strapping themselves to a rocket like Wile E. Coyote and firing themselves directly into another crisis. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers' back-to-back failure to negotiate new deals with the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA means that Hollywood has been almost completely shut down by a dual actors and writers strike, something it hasn't faced for more than 60 years.
Since the actors strike means movie stars can't promote their work or even walk the red carpet at premieres, studios are already feeling the pain at the box office. Editor’s note: One in a series of stories marking the 100th day of the WGA strike.
As the WGA strike clocks 100 days, simply put — the motion picture studios had always been bracing for this.
Unlike the current SAG-AFTRA strike that forced the global shutdown of Hollywood movies including Gladiator 2 and Deadpool 3, the WGA strike, though largely considered to be a TV and streaming fight, has left its mark on the motion picture side — most predominantly on initially shaking up the theatrical-release schedule.
Franchise leader Disney was the first studio to overhaul its calendar with the move of 21 movies from 2025 through 2031. Chief among them was the delay of James Cameron’s long-in-the-works Avatar 3 pushing from Christmas 2024 to 2025, and several Marvel projects redated including Phase 6 finales Avengers: Kang Dynasty going from the start of May 2025 to 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars shifting from May 2026 to May 2027. The buzzword in Hollywood right now is strike, with the Writers Guild of America actively in theirs and SAG-AFTRA possibly nearing their own. Uh, then what?
While the WGA strike has put numerous productions on hold in Hollywood, Deadline notes (in a new piece titled “What Happens To Hollywood (And Beyond) If The Actors Go On Strike”) that a Screen Actors Guild strike would have more global repercussions. After all, SAG-AFTRA has more than 160,000 members, compared to the WGA’s ~20,000. And with so many productions filming outside of the United States, that would mean more than just domestic offices closing down.
Stopping so many productions amid another Hollywood strike would, of course, further impact the release calendar as well. We’ve already seen how much the WGA strike has played a role in this, as Disney has significantly shuffled their own releases, moving back major films like the upcoming Avatar and Star Wars installments,...

With the ongoing writers strike, it was expected that a number of productions would see delays. News has broken that Avatar 3, the next installment in the franchise, has had its release date pushed back. Originally slated for next year, the film is now anticipated in 2025. That also means the sequels will be accordingly bumped into the future.
Saldaña, who plays the alien Neytiri, noted the new date on her Instagram story. Its caption said it all: “Great! I’m gonna be 53 when the last ‘Avatar’ comes out.”
She added: “I was 27 when I shot the very first ‘Avatar.'”
The intense CGI required for each installment has been blamed for the delays.
In response to the announcement, producer Jon Landau wrote on Twitter: “Each ‘Avatar’ film is an exciting but epic undertaking that takes time to bring to the quality level we as filmmakers strive for and audiences have come to expect. The team is hard at...

When James Cameron’s fifth “Avatar” movie opens in theaters in 2031, Zoe Saldaña will end a whopping 26-year journey playing the Na’vi warrior and devoted mother Neytiri. How’s that for character longevity? Disney announced June 13 that Cameron’s three upcoming “Avatar” sequels have been pushed back on the release calendar yet again, extending the franchise into 2031.
“Great! I’m gonna be 53 when the last ‘Avatar’ comes out,” Saldaña humorously posted on her Instagram alongside a shocked face emoji. “I was 27 when I shot the very first ‘Avatar.'”
Saldaña’s co-star Sam Worthington, who stars as Jake Sully in the franchise, will be 55 years old when the final “Avatar” movie hits theaters. Cameron will be 77 years old.

Leave it to James Cameron to create new rules. That’s the perk of directing three of the four biggest movies of all time at the worldwide box office — 2009’s Avatar, 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water and 1997’s Titanic.
On Tuesday, Disney revealed that Cameron and his team need more time to make the next three installments in the blockbuster franchise. The news wasn’t exactly a surprise, considering that release dates for the various Avatar pics have already shifted numerous times.
Most immediately, Avatar 3 is being pushed back by a year from Dec. 20, 2024, to Dec. 19, 2025.
While that move was normal enough, many in Hollywood distribution circles couldn’t believe it when Disney revealed that the fourth Avatar, which had been set to debut in theaters on Dec. 18, 2026, will instead go out Dec. 21, 2029, while Avatar 5, previously set for release on Dec. 22, 2028, is now dated for Dec. 19, 2031. “Avatar: The Way of Water” may have finally arrived in theatres in 2022, but that long parade of “Avatar” delays isn’t done, yet.
The Walt Disney Co. on Tuesday pushed the release of “Avatar 3” a year, bumping it from December 2024 to December 2025. The timeline is stretched even further for the next planned instalments. “Avatar 4” is now slated to hit theatres in December 2029; “Avatar 5” is set to arrive in December 2031.

If those dates hold, the “Avatar” film series will have stretched across the first four decades of the century. Director James Cameron, who launched “Avatar” in 2009, has said he may not direct films 4 and 5. By December 2031, the 68-year-old Cameron would be 77. “Avatar” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” have collectively made more than $5.2 billion at the box office.

With the ongoing writers' strike impacting development and shooting dates for films across Hollywood, Disney has now announced a huge swathe of release date changes for Marvel, Avatar and other movies.
Marvel, of course, has been delaying some of its films' production and that is having a domino effect for the highly connected cinematic universe. Captain America: Brave New World is moving from May 2024 to 26 August next year, which pushes Thunderbolts to 20 December 2024, Blade to 14 February 2025, and Fantastic Four to 2 May 2025.
That knock-on effect means that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will be bumped back a year, to 1 May 2026, inheriting the release date for follow-up Avengers: Secret Wars, which itself is on the move to 7 May 2027.
Avatar fans, already well used to the waiting game, will see their patience tested further, since Avatar 3 has moved to 19 December 2025, Avatar 4 to 21 December 2029 and Avatar 5 all the way to 19 December 2031! which...

The Walt Disney Company is one of the biggest conglomerates in Hollywood, with dozens of movie studios under its umbrella. Disney currently holds full ownership over Lucasfilm’s ‘Star Wars,’ Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe, and all the 20th Century Studios’ franchises, including ‘Alien’ and James Cameron’s ‘Avatar.’
We still remember all the delays caused by the pandemic of Covid-19 back in 2020. Those delays were really a headache for movie studios, cinemas, and movie lovers in general. Disney announced a massive overhaul of its release schedule on Tuesday, with numerous tentpole features shifting dates between 2024 and 2031.
First up: James Cameron’s “Avatar” franchise will adjust its timeline once again. Recently set to debut on December 20, 2024, “Avatar 3” is now dated December 19, 2025. “Avatar 4,” set to premiere on December 18, 2026, shifted back three years to December 21, 2029. “Avatar 5,” previously penciled in for December 22, 2028, was also pushed back three years, to December 19, 2031.
Next: The Marvel Cinematic Universe. Numerous MCU movies were delayed by a year – likely due to the impact of the ongoing writers’ strike, which forced Disney and Marvel to stop production on features like “Thunderbolts” and “Blade.”
“Captain America: Brave New World” moves from May 3, 2024, to July 26, 2024.
“Thunderbolts,” which had occupied the July 26 date, is not set to arrive in theaters on December 20, 2024.
“Blade,” set for September 6, 2024, is now scheduled for February 14, 2025.

Disney has just announced that they have just shuffled their entire release schedule. Some changes were expected. Some that were unexpected (there are now two Star Wars movies scheduled to be released in 2026) and some are disappointing (one Avatar sequel has been pushed all the way into the 2030s). But, some are very cool – like Deadpool 3 being moved forward, and the new Alien movie from Fede Alvarez getting a theatrical release date.
Here’s how it shakes out:
Previously scheduled to reach theatres on November 8, 2024, Deadpool 3 has now been moved forward to May 3, 2024.
That’s just three days before the release date Captain America: Brave New World had been sitting on, but that movie has now been bumped back to July 26, 2024.
Thunderbolts had been set to reach theatres on that date, but since it hasn’t been able to start filming, it has moved back to December 20, 2024. For the same reason,...

Refresh for updates It feels like Covid all over again, but it’s not. While the wildly successful launch of “Avatar: The Way of Water” means that James Cameron will fulfill his promise of making the additional “Avatar” sequels, yet another release date delay has been announced for the next few films.
“Avatar 3,” previously set for release in 2024, has been pushed back a year to Dec. 19, 2025. Meanwhile “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5” are being delayed, as well — “Avatar 4” moves from 2026 to Dec. 21, 2029 and “Avatar 5” shifts from 2028 all the way to Dec. 19, 2031.
Cameron has most of “Avatar 3” already in the can, he previously revealed, but this latest release date shift could mean he’s going back to capture additional footage. He also previously stated he’s already shot some of “Avatar 4” to capture footage of the younger characters in their younger state, as the majority of “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5” take place after a significant time jump in the mythology.

From Pandora to your living room, Avatar: The Way of Water will hit streaming services on June 7th. In addition to its Disney+ home, however, the latest epic from James Cameron will also be available to watch via HBO Max — or, as it will be formally known by the end of the month, just Max.
The three-hour, 12-minute Avatar sequel will be doing some unexpected cross-pollination between streaming platforms thanks to a recent deal that allows Max to share streaming windows with Disney+ and Hulu for half the studio’s titles through the 2022 release year. Including The Way of Water in that deal is a smart business move for Max, considering its colossal impact at the box office.
Avatar: The Way of Water premiered in the US on December 16th and went on to gross over $2.3 billion worldwide, making it not only the highest-grossing movie of 2022, but also the third highest-grossing movie of all time.

While the first "Avatar" film was largely centered on an outsider who is adopted into a new culture, its 2022 sequel, "Avatar: The Way of Water," is about a family trying to survive and stay together. For Joel David Moore — who plays Dr. Norm Spellman, the human xenoanthropologist whose allegiances lie with the Na'vi — it was a little about family behind the scenes too.
Joel's son, Oliver "Ollie" Moore, made his acting debut in the second "Avatar" movie, playing the first child of Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) as a newborn. Yep, he's baby Neteyam. Ollie, who is now five, was just three months old then. For his dad, who was part of the scene as well, the moment was too much to deal with.
"[As] Norm, I was supposed to be very engaged in the newborn Na'vi with the clan, with the rest of the Omaticaya clan," Joel told People.

James Cameron climbs the ladder to cut the net for winning Deadline’s 2022 Most Valuable Blockbuster Movie Tournament after Avatar: The Way of Water cleared over a half-billion dollars in profit after all ancillaries.
Given the sleeper nature of this sequel, and given the overall boom expected from this year’s global box office to $32 billion ( up 24% from 2022), if there’s a takeaway on theatrical’s track record moving forward, it’s that more premium theaters — like Plf, 4Dx and Screen X — are needed. Those are the formats that made Avatar: The Way of Water a success, and by which moviegoers scheduled their viewing. If the motion picture industry wants to continue making moviegoing a better option than in-home viewing, it’s not just with product but also with the cinematic experience.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament took a hiatus during the pandemic as movie theaters closed for the majority of 2020-2021 and theatrical day-and-date titles on both the big screen and studios’ respective streaming platforms became more prevalent. Coming back from that brink, the studios have largely returned to their theatrical release models and the downstream monies they can bring. Not to mention their power in launching IPs around the world with big global marketing campaigns. When it comes to evaluating the financial performance of top movies, it isn’t about what a film grosses at the box office. The true tale is told when production budgets, P&a, talent participations and other costs collide with box office grosses, and ancillary revenues from VOD to DVD and TV. To get close to that mysterious end of the equation, Deadline is repeating our Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2022, using data culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

James Cameron Likens Dreams to ‘Generative AI': ‘They’re Making Imagery From a Vast Dataset’ (Video)
“Avatar” director and filmmaking visionary James Cameron is lifting the veil on his creative process, and it all starts with dreams. Literal dreams, that is. And the sci-fi filmmaker feels that dreams’ tendency to process memories and images is not dissimilar from generative AI.
“[Dreams] are kind of like a generative AI,” Cameron told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria Sunday. “I think they’re making imagery from a vast dataset that’s our entire experience in life, and … then another part of our brain is supplying a narrative that goes along with it and the narrative doesn’t always make much sense.”
While the “Titanic” director admits that “scientists don’t really understand dreams and the psychological purpose that they serve,” he argues that, through dreams, “we’re storytelling to ourselves all night long” as people experience Rem sleep.
“We’re trying to make sense of the world because we don’t...
