- [Alfred Pennyworth suggests to Bruce Wayne that he take dancing lessons with his spare time]
- Alfred Pennyworth: Well, you know, with all this spare time on your hands, how are you gonna fill it?
- Bruce Wayne: Well, I imagine you have some ideas.
- Alfred Pennyworth: I do. Dancing lessons.
- Bruce Wayne: Dancing lessons.
- Alfred Pennyworth: That's right. I mean, a man of your station should be able to guide gracefully a beautiful young girl across a dance floor, don't you think?
- Bruce Wayne: And I suppose that you're gonna be teaching me these lessons.
- Alfred Pennyworth: Why, I certainly could. You know, I was quite well regarded as a... bit of a dancer in my day, actually.
- [as Alfred does a twirl in front of Bruce]
- [Ivy Pepper leaves the murdered man Nick in his home]
- Ivy Pepper: [about his plants] Next time, remember to water.
- [Bruce Wayne begins questioning Kathryn]
- Bruce Wayne: You tried to kill me. You were behind Indian Hill. Hugo Strange was hired by you.
- Kathryn: Is that why you're here, Bruce? To ask questions you already know the answers to?
- [Bruce Wayne accuses Kathryn's organization for the death of his parents]
- Kathryn: According to you, we tried to kill you once.
- Bruce Wayne: I began all this because I wanted to solve my parents' murder. Six months ago, I concluded your organization responsible.
- Kathryn: Have you changed your mind?
- Bruce Wayne: No. But there are other... considerations.
- Kathryn: Such as your own life. The lives of those close to you.
- [first lines]
- Kathryn: [the lady behind the Owl mask introduces herself to Bruce Wayne] Bruce. You wanted to talk.
- Kathryn: [Kathryn chuckles] Forgive me.
- Kathryn: [removing her mask] Better?
- Bruce Wayne: I know you. I've seen you at Wayne Enterprises events. You've been inside my home.
- Kathryn: My name is Kathryn.
- [Bruce Wayne makes an offer to Kathryn]
- Kathryn: What do you have to offer?
- Bruce Wayne: Wayne Enterprises.
- Kathryn: You cannot give someone what they already possess.
- Bruce Wayne: I'm not finished. If I die, my shares will be turned over to the federal government. Investigators will comb through every file, every asset. Are you prepared for that kind of scrutiny?
- Kathryn: That would be unfortunate, but we would weather the storm. What else?
- Bruce Wayne: The Wayne name still has meaning. It's a symbol of light and hope. For a group such as yours, I could provide a useful distraction.
- Kathryn: You are an impressive young man. Still, your offer is not sufficient.
- [Valerie Vale shows up at Jim Gordon's front door]
- Valerie Vale: Morning. Surprised to see me?
- James Gordon: Not really. What do you want?
- Valerie Vale: I have a proposition.
- James Gordon: Not interested.
- Valerie Vale: Oh, come on. Think of it as a way to say 'I'm sorry for handcuffing you to a car door.'
- James Gordon: Except I'm not.
- [Valerie Vale enters Jim Gordon's apartment]
- Valerie Vale: Wow. So this is where you live. Anyone considering a life in bounty hunting should see this. Preferably wearing a hazmat suit.
- [Valerie Vale offers to help Jim Gordon get the reward money for Fish Mooney]
- Valerie Vale: Fish Mooney. Penguin's million-dollar bounty. I can help you get it.
- Valerie Vale: [as Gordon pauses] Ooh, see, now you're thinking, 'A million dollars, that can buy me a lot of scotch.' But, hey, when you're rich, do everyone a favor, spring for a maid, will you? Or just firebomb the place and be done with it.
- [Valerie Vale asks for Jim Gordon's help to get the story]
- James Gordon: What's in it for you?
- Valerie Vale: A story.
- James Gordon: That's it?
- Valerie Vale: It shocks you that I love my job and I want to be good at it?
- James Gordon: Kinda. Why not just bring her in yourself? Why give me a million dollars?
- Valerie Vale: Because I'm a bigger person than you. And... because I couldn't find her.
- [Jim Gordon walks into Barbara Kean's bar]
- Barbara Kean: [Barb smiles uncontrollably] Oh... my... God.
- James Gordon: Hello, Barbara.
- Barbara Kean: 'Hello, Barbara'? Is that all I get?
- James Gordon: [Gordon hesitates] How you been?
- Barbara Kean: [Barbara smiles] Oh. How've I been? Well, see for yourself. I mean, it's no art gallery, but there's less chance of me dying of boredom.
- [Barbara Kean meets Valerie Vale]
- Barbara Kean: How's Lee?
- James Gordon: We're not together.
- Barbara Kean: No. I thought by now you would've chased her down, put a ring on it. Did you dump her? Oh, I bet you dumped her, didn't you? You're such a heartbreaker.
- Valerie Vale: I feel like I walked into something.
- Barbara Kean: [Barb turns to Valerie] 'Cause you did. Who are you?
- Valerie Vale: Valerie Vale. I work for The Gazette. We're working on a project.
- Barbara Kean: [Barb whispers] I bet. She your new girlfriend?
- James Gordon: No.
- Valerie Vale: No.
- [Barb chuckles]
- [Valerie Vale remembers Barbara Kean from the papers]
- Valerie Vale: Oh, wait, I remember this. You kidnapped him and his girlfriend, held them hostage in a church. Aren't you supposed to be in Arkham?
- Barbara Kean: I was, but turns out I'm totally sane. Got a paper proving it.
- Valerie Vale: Yeah. Signed by Hugo Strange.
- [Barbara Kean offers Selina Kyle's whereabouts to Jim Gordon but only for a kiss]
- James Gordon: Selina, have you seen her?
- Barbara Kean: [Barb leans into Jim Gordon] A kiss. That's my price.
- Valerie Vale: Is she serious? Are-are you serious?
- Valerie Vale: [Valerie whispers behind Gordon] Do it.
- James Gordon: [Gordon pauses before backing away] Never mind.
- Barbara Kean: [Barb sighs] You're honestly no fun.
- [Barbara Kean tells Jim Gordon that she had a dream about him]
- Barbara Kean: Jim. I had a dream about you the other night. You were in this horrible accident, and you lost both of your legs, and then I had to push you around in a giant baby carriage.
- James Gordon: Good seeing you, Barbara.
- [Valerie Vale locks Jim Gordon out of the car]
- James Gordon: Hey. Open the door.
- Valerie Vale: You should've let me come to find Peabody.
- James Gordon: Vale!
- Valerie Vale: And, you know what, I like your ex.
- [Valerie drives off without Gordon]
- [the GCPD raid Fish Mooney's hideout]
- Fish Mooney: [as the police storm in] Oh, we have company.
- Harvey Bullock: GCPD! Don't nobody move!
- [Penguin tells the citizens of Gotham to kill the monsters]
- Oswald Cobblepot: For months, I warned the police about the threat to our city posed by Hugo Strange's freaks, by the murderer Fish Mooney, and how did they protect you? They said that Fish Mooney wasn't real. That these escapees were victims who need our help. Well, Fish Mooney was real. And once she was cornered by the GCPD, finally, they let her escape. And these 'victims'... Well, I, for one, am not afraid to call them by their proper name: monsters!
- Oswald Cobblepot: [the crowd cheers] Our city is being invaded by monsters, attacking our brothers and sisters, and it is up to us! To you! To kill every monster you see! Who is with me?
- [the crowd cheers as Penguin holds his fist into the air]
- [Valerie Vale tells Jim Gordon that they're even after both successfully ditching each other]
- Valerie Vale: Can we call this even? You got me. I got you. It's over. Let me buy you a drink.
- James Gordon: Yeah... it's over when I get Fish. You can read about it.
- [Lucius Fox tells Jim Gordon that he doesn't want to lose his job for helping him]
- Lucius Fox: I do not want to get in trouble. Odd as it might seem, I do enjoy working here.
- [Nick offers Ivy Pepper a beverage]
- Nick: This is it. Nothing special, but it's home. You hungry?
- Ivy Pepper: Just thirsty.
- Nick: Beer? Pop? Tea?
- Ivy Pepper: Water.
- Ivy Pepper: [when Ivy sees the dying plants in his living room] So sad. Poor things.
- [Jim Gordon tells Captain Barnes that they can't reach Harvey Bullock]
- James Gordon: Harvey isn't answering his phone. Nobody knows where he is.
- Captain Nathaniel Barnes: Well, you could start by looking in every place in Gotham that serves booze.
- [Harvey Bullock tells the mansion gate guard that he's there to see Hugo Strange]
- Harvey Bullock: I'm here to see Strange.
- Mansion Gate Guard: We haven't heard anything.
- Harvey Bullock: You haven't? That's strange. I mean strange weird, not the guy Strange.
- [Fish Mooney finds Hugo Strange]
- Hugo Strange: [Strange smiles] Look at you. Amazing. You were my greatest creation.
- Fish Mooney: Your greatest creation who's dying.
- Hugo Strange: What?
- Fish Mooney: You're going to fix me, Daddy. And when that's done, you're going to make me an army, so I can have this city kneeling at my feet.
- Hugo Strange: But I can't... fix you.
- [Captain Barnes asks Fish Mooney to put Bullock on the phone]
- Harvey Bullock: [Fish looks to Bullock] You don't control me anymore.
- Fish Mooney: [Fish looks to Sid] Sid.
- Harvey Bullock: [Sid tightens the gun to Bullock's head] Hey, Cap. How are ya? Sorry.
- [Fish Mooney tells Captain Barnes that if anybody enters the mansion Bullock gets a bullet]
- Fish Mooney: Don't you know you're speaking to a dying woman, which severely limits your negotiating position? So here's how it's going to go down. One cop comes within 20 feet of this place, and Harvey, although I love him, will eat a bullet.
- Harvey Bullock: [Fish slams the phone shut] You had to come back, didn't you?
- Fish Mooney: Like a bad penny.
- [Fish Mooney tells Hugo Strange what she learned as a club owner]
- Fish Mooney: You know, I owned a club once. Ran protection on the side. Every first of the month, people would pay me. Every once in a while, someone would come up short.
- Fish Mooney: [Fish walks up to Strange] And they'd say, 'Mooney, I don't have the money. Mooney, I need more time.' And they'd cry and cry.
- Fish Mooney: [Fish makes a squeezing motion to Strange] And then I discovered that when I squeezed them, and squeezed them, and squeezed them, they always had more. You are going to fix me... or I swear to God, I will make you pray for your death.
- [Jim Gordon walks up to Harvey Bullock as a second hostage]
- Harvey Bullock: Jim, what the hell are you doing here?
- James Gordon: Saving you; I thought that was obvious.
- Harvey Bullock: Oh, yeah. Totally. Thank you.
- [Jim Gordon tells Fish Mooney that he showed up to the mansion alone to save Bullock]
- James Gordon: I'm here on my own. I only want Bullock.
- Fish Mooney: Really? You'd risk your life for this broken down old thing?
- Harvey Bullock: Thanks.
- James Gordon: He'd do the same for me.
- Harvey Bullock: I would, it's true.
- Fish Mooney: Well, you've helped me, 'cause now I have two hostages.
- James Gordon: Barnes won't see it that way. Hell, you kill me, he'll probably thank you. I've been nothing but a pain in the ass to him.
- Harvey Bullock: Also true.
- [Penguin receives a phone call from Jim Gordon]
- Oswald Cobblepot: [Penguin smiles] Jim, you just keep surprising me.
- James Gordon: [Gordon on the other end] Shut up.
- [Captain Barnes tells Penguin and the other citizens of Gotham to leave the mansion]
- Captain Nathaniel Barnes: Cobblepot, get this crowd to disperse, or I'll make them disperse. And there will be bloodshed.
- Oswald Cobblepot: [Penguin shouts with an evil grin] Promise?
- [Penguin corners Fish Mooney and Hugo Strange in the woods with a gun]
- Fish Mooney: So this is it? I spare your life, and you shoot me dead in the woods like an animal?
- Oswald Cobblepot: [Penguin smiles] Pretty much, yes.
- [Penguin demands for Fish Mooney to tell him why she didn't kill him]
- Oswald Cobblepot: Why didn't you kill me? I have gone over that night 1,000 times, and it doesn't make any sense. Why didn't you kill me? I would've killed you in an instant. Answer me!
- Fish Mooney: Because you're mine. You were my umbrella boy, remember? You rubbed my feet when they were tired. And now look at you, the terror of Gotham. Everything I've done in my life, possibly the best thing was turning Oswald Cobblepot into... the Penguin. I couldn't destroy that.
- Fish Mooney: [Fish looks to Hugo Strange] Ask him. He understands what it is to bring something into being. It is a part of you. Forever.
- Oswald Cobblepot: [Penguin lowers his gun with tears in his eyes] Good-bye, Fish. Don't come back.
- [Jim Gordon looks to the pile of dead monsters being burned]
- James Gordon: Tell Barnes something, would you?
- James Gordon: [Harvey Bullock nods his head] I'm going home.
- [Valerie Vale questions Jim Gordon about him being the one to let Fish Mooney escape]
- Valerie Vale: You promised to help Fish escape, but you did it by double-crossing her and delivering her to Penguin.
- James Gordon: If that were so, I'd be a millionaire by now.
- Valerie Vale: Except Fish isn't dead. Penguin would've dragged her in front of the mob if she was.
- [last lines]
- Valerie Vale: [Jim Gordon tells Valerie Vale to shut up for once] Who the hell are you, Jim Gordon?
- James Gordon: [Gordon slowly walks up to Valerie's face] Wait...
- James Gordon: Shut up for once.
- [when Gordon kisses Valerie on the lips]
- [Hugo Strange tells Fish Mooney that she's a new Eve]
- Hugo Strange: Believe me, if I could fix you, I would. I think of you as one of my own children. But I can't.
- Fish Mooney: So what am I supposed to do? Give up?
- Hugo Strange: Do you not understand what you are? What you represent? You are the first of a new generation. A new... Eve.
