Since making its debut at last year’s Fantasia Film Festival, New Life has garnered a lot of attention for its first-time writer/director John Rosman and his potentially apocalyptic chase film. I missed it during its festival run, but on the eve of its American release, I got my chance to rectify that and see if it lived up to its hype.
It starts like a conventional thriller, with a bloodied woman slipping through the streets of what looks like a typical American suburb, trying to avoid being seen. Morgan Freeman and “Yellowstone’s” Cole Hauser are set to star in an action thriller called “Muti” from director George Gallo.
The feature film follows a detective (Hauser) who is unable to process the death of his daughter and embarks on a hunt for a serial killer who kills based on a brutal tribal ritual known as Muti. He recruits the help of a professor and African anthropologist (Freeman) who hides an unspeakable secret but allows him to go deeper into the killer’s world, which reveals that one man’s insanity is another man’s religion.
The screenplay was written by Bob Bowersox, Jennifer Lemmon, Francesco Cinquemani, Giorgia Iannone, Luca Giliberto and Ferdinando Dell’Omo. “Muti” is based on a story by Joe Lemmon and Francesco Cinquemani.

The weekend is almost upon as, and as the theatrical schedule remains a barren wasteland until at least the beginning of next year, the weekly onslaught of new VOD releases have arrived to try and entice folks who’ve run out of things to watch on the various streaming services at their disposal that they haven’t seen a handful of times already.
There are a whopping 30 titles flooding the market this weekend, but the bad news is that none of them are what would exactly be called appointment viewing. Pick of the bunch is arguably The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, which sees Francis Ford Coppola return to the closing chapter of his sprawling crime saga and deliver a brand new edit.
