Jules tells Brockmire that she got hooked on baseball as a child when her father took her out of school to watch Willie Stargell's last game. That game was played on Sunday, Oct. 3, 1982. Jules correctly described Stargell's last at bat as an infield single to the pitcher, so this is not a completely fabricated story. However, she would not have been in school on a Sunday.
Brockmire stated that after being hit in the temple Ray Chapman died at home plate. The truth is he tried to reach first base, fell once, collapsed again, and then was helped off the field by teammates. He later died after surgery the next morning in a hospital.
