Hulu has to be pretty pleased with its list of new releases for June 2024. That’s because it’s about to be the summer of The Bear once again.
The Bear season 3 premieres all of its episodes on June 27 on Hulu. This FX dramedy has proven to be one of the most successful shows of its era. Jeremy Allen White stars as Carmy Berzatto, a world-famous chef who returns home to Chicago to help his floundering family restaurant after the death of his brother. Season 2 saw The Original Beef of Chicagoland crew transform the spot into fine dining establishment The Bear. It ruled. So will season 3 probably.
FX is responsible for the other major TV release on Hulu this month. Clipped premieres on June 4 and is about the scandalous real life story of Donald Sterling, the awful owner of the basketball team the Los Angeles Clippers. Another intriguing TV option...

Back In Action: Cameron Diaz Returns After 10 Years Away, Starring In Netflix Comedy With Jamie Foxx
It's been a decade since Cameron Diaz last took to our screens, playing the villainous Miss Hannigan in 2014's Jamie Foxx co-starring Annie. But now Diaz is back in action in, er, Back In Action, Netflix's buzzy new action comedy. The Charlie's Angels and Shrek actor stars alongside Foxx in the film, which sees the pair play suburban parents with a big secret: they used to be spies! Check out the first images from the film below:
Hailing from Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon – who's written this one alongside Brendan O’Brien (Bad Neighbours) – Back In Action follows Emily (Diaz) and Matt (Foxx), two seemingly average parents who used to be elite CIA agents. Years after giving up spycraft to start a family however, the couple's low-key suburban life is upended when their cover is blown and they find themselves dragged back into the world of espionage. And what a...

Brendan Fraser has been seeing a revival in his career after he won the Oscar for his role in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale. However, the actor will always be known for his role as Rick O’Connell in the horror adventure film The Mummy. Directed by Stephen Sommers, the film made him a bonafide star and turned the franchise into a huge asset for Universal Studios.
While Fraser shot to worldwide fame with The Mummy and its sequel The Mummy Returns, the latter also turned another upcoming actor into a star. Dwayne Johnson, who was a rising star at WWE at the time, made a cameo as the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns, leading him to receive his own spinoff film a year later.

Netflix and Dwayne Johnson movies have been a winning tag team in the past. But now, the streaming giant is looking to cut ties with one of the actor’s biggest box-office flops.
The changes in Netflix’s collection of Dwayne Johnson movies come at the same time he dodges questions about his reputation and professionalism. Johnson and Netflix have a history together, but it could be clouded by Johnson’s flailing reputation.

The Spiderwick Chronicles‘ first season debuted on Roku this past Friday and, as part of the show’s press junket, I recently got to sit down and chat with three of the show’s stars. According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users as of this writing, two closed shows are expected to receive nominations for Best Musical at this year’s Tony Awards. They are “Days of Wine and Roses,” which is in fifth place with 19/2 odds, and “Here Lies Love,” which is in second with 5/1 odds. Traditionally, however, closed shows tend to struggle getting Best Musical noms.
“Here Lies Love” opened way back in the summer of last year and was well received by critics. Yet it sadly never caught on commercially and ended up closing last November. Meanwhile, “Days of Wine and Roses” had already intended to be a limited run with its final performance planned for April 28 after opening in January to its own critical acclaim. Yet due to lackluster grosses, the run became even more limited, ending early on March 31.

For those of us who religiously watch “Sex and the City” on whatever platform it is currently streaming on (hi), April 1 is an exciting day. That’s the day the popular HBO series starring Sarah Jessica Parker is coming to Netflix — for the very first time. And TBS reruns this is not: This is the full, unedited, groundbreaking show, now just waiting for viewers new and old to do a Netflix binge. (Paging Gen Z!)
Of course, there are plenty of other exciting TV shows and movies hitting Netflix in April 2024. Movie thrills include Jessica Chastain-starring “Molly’s Game” making its way back to the streamer, as well as perennial rom-com fave “You’ve Got Mail.” On the TV side, there’s new series “Dead Boy Detectives,” from showrunner Steve Yockey, and from the same universe as “The Sandman,” based on the beloved comic series from Neil Gaiman.

Neve Campbell isn't ruling out a return to the 'Scream' franchise - if she's paid fairly. The 50-year-old actress, who portrayed Sidney Prescott for more than two decades, starting with the 1996 original slasher flick, quit over a dispute over pay in June 2022 and did not appear in 2023's 'Scream VI'.The next movie is in doubt after Melissa Barrera, 33, who played Tara Carpeneter's (Jenna Ortega) half-sister Sam Carpenter, was fired from the film over comments she made regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict.Jenna, 21, later exited the film due to a scheduling conflict with the second season of the Netflix series 'Wednesday' – in which she plays the title role of Wednesday Addams. And it lost its director a month later with Christopher Landon claiming his "dream job turned into a nightmare."Speaking to the press at the BAFTA Tea Party in Beverly Hills at the weekend, Neve said of...

Dwayne Johnson might be jumping to A24 for Benny Safdie’s Mma drama The Smashing Machine, but he’s determined to stick to the roots that helped make him one of the biggest stars of the silver screen. In a featured article focusing on Safdie’s next project, Johnson told Variety he has no plans to abandon “four-quadrant movies” despite getting dramatic for his role as Mma fighter Mark Kerr in Safdie’s next film project with A24.
“I want to be clear not to say that this is an abandonment of big, four-quadrant movies,” Johnson told Variety about confronting his most dramatic role yet. “I love making them, and there is tremendous value and importance in [them] … but there’s a time and a place for them. I’m at this point in my career where I want more. And I don’t mean I want more box office. I mean I want more humanity.

Let's make something very clear right up front: Tom Cruise is a more important, and better, movie star than Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Period. Full stop. But a piece of film news was announced this week that genuinely shocked me, and it has me thinking about what Cruise could learn from Johnson right now.
Word came out that Dwayne Johnson is set to play Mma fighter Mark Kerr in a biopic called "The Smashing Machine." On the surface, that may not seem like that big of a stretch: Johnson, of course, transitioned from the world of professional wrestling into becoming an actor, so the notion of him playing a professional athlete may not raise any eyebrows. The surprising part is the creative team: Benny Safdie, one half of the brother duo behind films like "Good Time" and "Uncut Gems," is directing for A24, one of the most interesting companies in the film industry right now.

It’s no secret that Julien Baker knows how to orchestrate a killer collab. The boygenius bandmember’s latest joint effort came as a surprise to some lucky concertgoers on Friday night, as Baker joined Touché Amoré onstage for their set opening for Deafheaven at The Novo in Los Angeles.

Back in 2015, just as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was cementing his status as one of the world's biggest movie stars, the wrestler-turned-actor starred in the highly successful disaster flick "San Andreas." This was actually one of the movies that proved Johnson could help open a big blockbuster outside of a major franchise. He had earned the reputation of being "franchise Viagra" given what he was able to do for "Fast & Furious," "G.I. Joe," and other established properties.
"San Andreas" sees the infamous San Andreas Fault finally give, which triggers a massive magnitude 9 earthquake in California. Rescue helicopter pilot Raymond Gaines (Johnson) and his estranged wife must then make their way from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their daughter. It was a huge success, taking in $474 million worldwide against a $110 million budget. That being the case, Warner Bros. was very quick to announce a squeal back in early 2016. But all these years later,...

The Witcher Season 3 is still holding strong on Netflix’s English-language TV list.
In its second week on the streamer, the first half of the new season drew 13.8M views (66.5M view hours divided by 4.82 runtime hours) for the week of July 3 to 9. That’s down slightly from the 15.2M views the episodes managed in their first few days on the platform following its June 29 debut.
Season 3 has managed 29M views since launch. It’s still quite a ways away from making the most popular TV list, as it would need to crack 79M views. But it’s only been two weeks, and there is still plenty of time in Netflix’s new 91-day measurement window for the season to make it — especially with the second half of the season yet to be released.
The excitement surrounding the new season prompted audiences to revisit The Witcher Seasons 1 and 2, which were...

Opening in theaters and on VOD July 14, Vertical’s “The Modelizer” offers a trailer that sells a romantic comedy that’s part of a new wave of “Hong Kong Films,” which are original features where the subject matter is distinctly Hong Kong but is in English.
Directed by Keoni Waxman and produced, written by and starring Byron Mann (who has seemingly aged about ten minutes since playing Ryu in the 1994 “Street Fighter” movie), the picture is a conventional mix of rom-com tropes (a well-off womanizer must change his ways once he finds someone – played by Rayssa Bratillieri — worth settling down for) and wealth porn, with the obvious hook being that it’s from a locale that isn’t often presented in such a fashion in mainstream Hollywood flicks.
The locale is usually for stranger-in-a-strange-land actioners like Dwayne Johnson’s “Skyscraper” (who co-starred Mann) and Rowann Atkinson’s “Johnny English Reborn...

Die Hard came out thirty-five years ago and we’re still seeing a steady stream of knock-offs rip-offs and cash-ins arriving. Case in point, Mercy, which like last year’s Assault on Va-33 puts a hospital under siege. Can the filmmakers deliver an entertaining action film, or is this, like so many other similar films, Doa?
While serving in Afghanistan Dr. Michelle Miller had her husband turn up as a patient in her field hospital, worse he had a bomb strapped to him. This leads to an agonized, and agonizing, exchange of dialogue “Get out Michelle, somebody’s got to be there for Bobby!” “No, I’m not leaving you!” followed by Frank rolling off the table so his detonation somehow doesn’t kill her.

Surprise! Dwayne Johnson has returned to the “Fast and Furious” franchise, making an appearance in the post-credits sequence for the upcoming “Fast X,” out next Friday (May 19), TheWrap has exclusively learned.
What makes his return so shocking is how adamant Johnson was about not returning to the series. In November 2021, “Fast and Furious” franchise star and producer Vin Diesel took to Instagram, essentially to beg Johnson to return to the mainline franchise. In 2019, Johnson starred in “Hobbs & Shaw,” a spin-off with Jason Statham.
A month after Diesel’s social media appeal, Johnson told CNN: “I told [Diesel] directly that I would not be returning to the franchise. I was firm yet cordial with my words and said that I would always be supportive of the cast and always root for the franchise to be successful, but that there was no chance I would return. Vin’s recent public post was an example of his manipulation.

The Action Scene is a column that explores the construction of action set pieces in order to deepen appreciation for and spark discussion about action cinema.“It was clear that Pm weren’t attempting art.” This remark prefaces interviews conducted by the sadly defunct publication Hopes & Fears with various directors and stars who worked with Pm Entertainment, an independent film company that churned out a steady stream of largely direct-to-video movies and television episodes—most famously within the action genre—between the late 1980s and early 2000s. Watching the operatic tour-de-force opening of the Pm film Intent to Kill (1992), however, one might doubt the statement’s accuracy. The extraordinary set piece features squealing tires, spraying glass, and slow-motion gunplay, all against a jet-black sky dotted by the vaporous glow of street lamps. Blue-hued, low-key lighting cuts through night air thick with fog and gun smoke, sustaining a noirish, dreamlike mood...

A sequel to the Mortal Kombat movie from 2021 is on the way, and The Wrap reports tonight that Karl Urban (“The Boys”) is in final talks to join the cast as Johnny Cage.
The Wrap reminds, “Johnny Cage was introduced in the first Mortal Kombat arcade game in 1992. Johnny Cage is depicted as an action movie star with an extensive martial arts background. He is often characterized as a swashbuckling, Hollywood fighting movie star who places great importance on his image and consistently behaves in a cool manner.”
The star of Amazon’s hit series “The Boys,” Karl Urban turns 50 years old next month, so this particular take on the classic Mortal Kombat character is sure to be different than expected. Many fans had been lobbying for WWE superstar The Miz to play Cage in the upcoming sequel, but Urban’s casting will bring a whole new facet to the character.

Dungeons & Dragons series: Drew Crevello joins the party as showrunner of the live-action adaptation
The Dungeons & Dragons series is gaining another party member in Drew Crevello (WeCrashed) as the showrunner of the live-action adaptation for Paramount+. Crevello will work closely with Rawson Marshall Thurber, who wrote the pilot script and will direct the first episode. The eight-episode series is a co-production between eOne and Paramount Pictures, with eOne leading the charge.
According to Deadline’s previous report, “Adapting Dungeons & Dragons for television has been a major focus for eOne under President of Global Television Michael Lombardo following the company’s 2019 acquisition by Hasbro. The live-action series has been tipped to be the studio’s largest-scope TV project ever, potentially launching a Dungeons & Dragons universe spanning multiple scripted and unscripted shows.”
Deadline would also like to remind us that Dungeons & Dragons is “a fantasy role-playing game franchise. Featuring humans, elves, orcs, and other fantastical creatures engaging in wars, treasure hunts, and campaigns,...

Legendary Entertainment — Hollywood’s high-profile producer and co-financier of big-budget studio fare — has found a new partner in Sony Pictures.
Under the terms of the deal, Legendary’s movies will be distributed and marketed globally by Sony, excluding China, where Legendary East will handle those duties. Sony will also handle home entertainment and TV distribution for those films. Sony does not have a streaming service, and Legendary will continue to partner with other companies for streaming, as it has with Netflix on the Enola Holmes films.
The pact does not include the Dune or Godzilla franchises, which will continue to be released by Warner Bros., Legendary’s previous partner. Dune: Part Two is due out from Warners on Nov. 3, 2023.
There is no formal deal for Sony to co-finance Legendary films, though it’s possible the two could explore that option down the road.

Hollywood’s two biggest superhero movies of late 2022 — Disney’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Warner Bros.’ Dwayne Johnson tentpole Black Adam — are expected to be blocked from release in China, as Beijing regulators continue to crack down on U.S. access to the world’s second-largest theatrical market.
There is less on the line for Hollywood in China than there used to be, thanks to the country’s steady tightening of censorship control and nearly three years of strict Covid-zero policies, but regulators’ consistent snubbing of top-tier superhero titles is still costing the studios tens of millions in potential revenue.
The first Black Panther film earned 105 million in China in 2018, while Dwayne Johnson’s movies — such as Skyscraper (98 million in China) and Hobbs & Shaw (201 million) — have tended to do big business in the country.

The disaster film comes and goes. The genre was massive in the 1970s, leading to classics like "The Towering Inferno" and "The Poseidon Adventure." It saw a resurgence in the '90s thanks to hits like "Armageddon" and "Dante's Peak," and there's been a slight bump over the past decade, too — think "Skyscraper" and "San Andreas," both starring The Rock. These films are often a chance to cobble together an all-star cast and thrill audiences by showing off some special effects work.
The biggest and best disaster films stick around. After all, people still debate whether "Armageddon" or "Deep Impact" was better. There are plenty more, however, that are forgotten. Whether due to genre fatigue or inexplicable box office failure, many have flown under the radar yet are still worth a watch. Some have casts that make them worthwhile (Alain Delon from "Le Samouraï" is in an "Airport" movie!), while...

Superhero movies continue to make money, as do films that star Dwayne Johnson (even when they aren't good). The latest entry into the DC Universe, "Black Adam," has now crossed 250 million at the worldwide box office.
In its second weekend, the movie dropped 59 domestically from its opening with about 27 million in ticket sales, which is a fairly standard drop for a front-loaded superhero picture. It's also in line with a lot of the second weekend drops for films starring Johnson in recent years, such as 55 for "Jumanji: The Next Level" and "Jungle Cruise," and 58 for "Hobbs and Shaw." It is quite a bit lower than DC's previous film this year, "The Batman," but that film's 50 drop was unusually good for a superhero flick.
"Black Adam" will get to enjoy another weekend free from other superhero blockbuster competition next weekend, but its reign will come to end the following weekend when...

Let’s celebrate the heydays of this autumn’s box office where we can, the season greatly hampered by a lack of tentpole product.
But thanks to New Line’s Dwayne Johnson DC movie, Black Adam, that’s changing.
In the wake of the pic posting the best opening of the actor’s solo star career at 67M domestic, (140M WW), Black Adam notched the best Monday and weekday (outside Friday) to date this fall with 4.5M ahead of Paramount’s Smile which made 2.98M on Tuesday, Oct. 4. The 4-day total for the Jaume Collet-Serra directed movie stands at 71.5M.
Black Adam‘s Monday beats that of last pandemic October’s Halloween Kills (2.7M) and Dune (1.75M) both of which were available theatrical day-and-date on respective studio streaming services Peacock and HBO Max as well as the first Monday of Halloween Ends (1.75M) which was in a similar distribution situation.

A lot is on the line this weekend with the release of Warner Bros./DC’s “Black Adam.” Theaters need the film to perform to keep revenue trending upward after a long drought, and Warner Bros. needs some good news amidst its turbulent post-merger period under Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
But more than anything else, “Black Adam” is a test for its lead actor and box office superstar, Dwayne Johnson, who has signaled publicly that he wants this film to be the start of a long-term partnership between the comic book film label and his production company, Seven Bucks, with the powerful, murderous antihero he plays in this new film at the center of it.
For that to happen, “Black Adam” will need to at least meet studio and independent projections of a 60 million opening weekend, which would sit between the 53.5 million opening of “Shazam!” in spring 2019 and...

By and large, modern superhero cinema is unsurprisingly IP-driven. Marvel and DC superheroes come with built-in fan bases both recent and long-standing — ones comprised of multiple demographics — and appeal to families and solo viewers alike. As Robert Downey Jr.'s essential turn as Tony Stark proved, though, the casts of these films matter. As we previously covered, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has added Harrison Ford to its roster, and DC has endured its share of star turns and casting woes. In "Black Adam," the Warner Bros. tentpole has Dwayne Johnson, who promises to change the hierarchy of the DC Extended Universe forever and, potentially, the company's box-office fortunes (though our "Black Adam" review may disagree).
Johnson is one of the few actors who can open a non-superhero blockbuster. With "Black Adam," he is testing his mettle in modern Hollywood's most tried-and-true genre. Thrillingly, in "Black Adam" Johnson is surrounded by...

This past weekend, “Halloween Ends” had a decent but somewhat lower-than-expected opening of 41.3 million, which means we’re back to relying on the superhero movies to salvage a box office in which horror has thrived but generally has been down. For example, “Halloween Ends” had the biggest weekend for Any movie since Jordan Peele’s “Nope” in late July. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Along comes Dwayne Johnson and his superhero passion project “Black Adam,” which has long been in development, but now, it becomes the first superhero movie in theaters since July’s “DC League of Super Pets” (also featuring and produced by Johnson) and Marvel’s “Thor: Love and Thunder.” Black Adam began life in the comics as the arch-nemesis of Shazam, but in recent years, he’s become more of an anti-hero, protecting the people of his country from outside oppressors.

Hollywood star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was ordered to lose weight, drop his stage name and stop talking about wrestling if he wanted to make it in Hollywood. The ‘Fast and the Furious’ star shot to fame in the mid-1990s as a regular performer with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) adopting the name ‘The Rock’ and becoming one of the franchise’s most recognisable wrestlers before making a crossover to movies with a role as the Scorpion King in 2001’s ‘The Mummy Returns’, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
However, Johnson has now shared that he was asked to make some serious changes if he wanted to be taken seriously as an actor. Speaking on ‘CBS Sunday Morning’, he said: “They said, ‘Okay, great. But now here’s what you have to do: You have to stop working out as much. You have to lose weight. You can’t call yourself The Rock.

WaterTower Music has released the first music to be heard from the upcoming New Line Cinema action adventure “Black Adam,” starring Dwayne Johnson. The first-ever feature film to explore the story of the uncompromising DC antihero comes to the big screen under the direction of Jaume Collet-Serra (“Jungle Cruise”). The Black Adam Theme (from “Black Adam”) by highly respected Grammy Award-winning and Emmy-nominated composer Lorne Balfe has just been released – in advance of the film and soundtrack release. “Black Adam” smashes into theaters and IMAX internationally beginning 19 October 2022, and in North America on October 21, 2022.
Balfe’s vision for the music of Black Adam encompasses an exploration into the back stories that define the characters. The composer commented on that approach. “It was exciting to get into the Black Adam theme, and I really wanted to capture his essence as the DC comic book world’s anti-hero. We had a large...

Neve Campbell is set to star in the upcoming ABC series “Avalon,” Variety has confirmed.
The show hails from co-creators David E. Kelley and Michael Connelly, with the show based on a short story that Connelly wrote. It was ordered straight-to-series at ABC in February.
The series takes place in the main city of Avalon on Catalina Island, where LA Sheriff Department Detective Nicole “Nic” Searcy (Campbell) heads up a small office. Catalina has a local population that serves more than 1 million tourists a year, and each day when the ferries arrive, hundreds of potential new stories enter the island. Detective Searcy is pulled into a career-defining mystery that will challenge everything she knows about herself and the island.
The character of Searcy is further described as the lone detective assigned to the LA County Sheriff’s substation on Catalina Island. Somewhat inscrutable, she isn’t easily intimidated and holds firm to her morals.
