Yulin Kuang knows she hit the literary jackpot.
The writer-director, whose credits include The CW’s I Ship It, Hulu’s Dollface and Netflix’s The Healing Powers of Dude, is adapting Emily Henry’s People We Meet On Vacation for film and writing-directing the forthcoming Beach Read film for 20th Century Studios. Henry has became a household name in the world of romance, with devoted fans eager to see how her love stories translate onscreen — even going so far as to share dream casting choices, trying to find Easter egg clues that would tease anything of what’s to come and stoking rumors about a potential Paul Mescal and Ayo Edebiri casting thanks to a photo Henry shared on social media.
While it can be assumed adapting those stories might come with added pressure, Kuang understands fans’ anxiety over whether the adaptations will be up to par.

In 2016, CW Seed broadcast an 8 minute per episode scripted web series based on Yulin Kuang’s short, I Ship It. In it, we met Ella, Tim, Shira and Sasha for the first time. Ella and Tim worked at a website overseen by Shira. After breaking up with her boyfriend, Ella and Tim began a band, eventually falling in love. Fast forward to 2019, and we’re now on season 2 of the TV version of the increasingly popular series. While the premise of the TV show remains roughly the same as the web series, there’s a couple of key differences.

Usually, a writer pitches an idea to a network. If they like it, they'll develop it. If that step goes well, they'll shoot the pilot. If it pleases the network, they order it to series. Some programs take a different path to air. Such is the case with the new I Ship It TV show. It was originally developed as a web short, and then CW Seed, The CW's streaming platform, ordered the first season. The network was impressed enough that they ordered a second season for broadcast. Will their faith in it pay off? Will I Ship It be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned. *Status update below.

CBS took a step back Monday with a lineup of reruns, leaving it to the other networks to vie for primetime’s top ratings spot, which went to ABC’s Bachelor In Paradise. The tropical romantic reality series ticked down a smidge from last week, garnering a 1.2 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 4.55 million viewers. Still, that gave it the top Monday spot in the demo for a fourth week in a row and helped ABC win the night overall.
NBC, meanwhile, saw growth with American Ninja Warrior, which jumped up a tenth to a season high in viewership. It was the night’s most-watched program and gave NBC the overall win in that metric.
Bachelor In Paradise led into Grand Hotel, which fell a skosh in ratings, while American Ninja Warrior opened the door to Dateline, which like its lead-out also saw a boost.

Fox’s “Beat Shazam” will take a beat now, as the Jamie Foxx-hosted game show aired its season finale on Monday. Though the final episode of the summer stayed steady with last week’s ratings, the conclusion wasn’t enough to keep pace with most of the network’s main competition.
Could have been worse, however: “Beat Shazam” could have seen the Nielsen numbers for CW show “I Ship It.” More on that lower down.
ABC was first in ratings with a 1.0 rating/5 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 4.1 million, according to preliminary numbers. “Bachelor in Paradise” from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. averaged a 1.3/6 and 4.8 million viewers. “Grand Hotel” at 10 got a 0.5/3 and 2.6 million viewers.

Following in the footsteps of “Backpackers” and “Significant Mother,” Yulin Kuang’s “I Ship It” was developed for digital platform CW Seed but, come August 19 after two seasons of streaming, will receive a linear run on the CW network proper.
“We have conversations early on with both the production companies and the creators about, ‘Your show has the potential to go to broadcast,'” Rick Haskins, executive vice president, marketing and digital programs, The CW, tells Variety. “And so what we try to do is set some parameters around it that would allow it to go to broadcast.”
Some of those parameters are content based, as Haskins shares that “comedies and musicals probably have a better chance than e-sports, because of the nature of those shows.” But they are also cognizant of making them “different enough [to CW shows] that they have their own identity and hopefully bring in their own audience,” he continues.

Perhaps this is the reason American Gods‘ second season has yet to begin production: Co-showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green have departed the Starz drama, TVLine has confirmed.
According to Deadline, the pair — who are rumored to have left due to creative differences with producer Freemantle over the length and direction of Season 2 — informed the cast of their departure today. The site reports that Neil Gaiman, whose award-winning novel inspired the series, may come on board as a co-showrunner, though Gaiman tweeted late Wednesday that was not going to be the case:

Of course, Mistress Fraser has to undergo several life-threatening incidents before the happy homecoming takes place. There’s the aforementioned serpent going to second base, as well as a swarm of...

It’s no secret that the gap between premium television (paid for by and broadcast on traditional networks and/or the big online players like Netflix and Amazon) is getting smaller. Not in terms of budgets, but in terms of creativity, talent and opportunity. Increasingly the next big thing might come from the online world, and that wouldn’t be such a strange thing. Broad City and Insecure, two celebrated Us comedy series, both had their origins online, with sketches by Abbi and Ilana, and Issa Rae’s Awkward Black Girl. The celebrated Fleabag was a BBC Three digital show.

The long wait is finally over and the North remembers and winter is here. In Westeros at least, and on its winds it brings a Dragon Queen and her armada, vengeance, and some scary as heck White Walkers. But before we get into it I have to warn you. If you haven’t seen the Game of Thrones premiere “Dragonstone” yet, go watch it before you read this because there will be spoilers.

We’ve heard about it for a long time now and even though we knew it, and anticipated it, seeing the snow fall in Westeros still feels a little surreal. So what do the winds of winter mean for Westeros? Is it an ending? Is it a beginning? Or is it complete and utter Armageddon for all the living? If Archmaester Marwyn is...

Digital producers cheered last year when the Television Academy expanded its short-form programming categories. But then they saw the nominees and winners.
Most of last year’s short form contenders didn’t come from digital-first producers or platforms, but came from traditional networks and talent. Adult Swim’s “Childrens Hospital” led all nominees, followed by the History channel’s “The Crossroads of History” and AMC’s “Fear the Walking Dead: Flight 462.”
“Childrens Hospital” ultimately won the Outstanding Series category, which included just one independent contender: “Her Story,” about two transgender women living in Los Angeles. Besides “Crossroads of History” and “Flight 462,” the two other nominees were behind-the-scenes looks at popular TV shows: “Hack into Broad City” and “UnREAL The Auditions.”
In the short form nonfiction or reality series, another marketing series won, FX’s “Inside Look: The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.”
That wasn’t quite what...

Jeremy Shada has never seen “Rushmore” or “Election” (granted — he’s been busy as a working actor for the majority of his 19 years), but he plays politico teenager Tyler Prendergast with a magical combination of Max Fischer’s charisma and Tracy Flick’s moxie.
Tyler Prendergast is the anchor at the heart of “Mr. Student Body President,” a snappy and smart comedy that takes its teenage characters as seriously as they take student government. Tyler runs a tight ship at Berenger High, buoyed by his right-hand woman Hadley (Arden Rose), always to the dismay of his formidable principal (Christina Moore). Whether it’s a hall monitor strike, a problem with the peace treaty between the nerds and the jocks, or a power play from an upstart freshman, there is no problem Tyler and his team cannot handle.
