Bob Yari’s startup mini-major Magenta Light Studios has found its first in-house film production in “Summerhouse,” a period drama set against the anxiety of the Vietnam War.
“Bombshell” and “Halloween” star Malcolm McDowell will lead the project with Jacob Ward, an up-and-comer who made his debut in Ray Romano’s 2022 film “Somewhere in Queens.” Ed Kaplan (“2 Graves in the Desert”) will write the script and direct, with Shelly Jonson as director of photography.
Production will begin in Connecticut this month. Moonstone Entertainment will represent the international sales, previewing for buyers out of Cannes’ Marche du Film.
“Summerhouse” follows college grad Ned Stern (Ward) awaiting his draft into the Vietnam War. Ned spends his last summer of freedom caring for a belligerent wealthy alcoholic man (McDowell) at his lakeside mansion, only to find himself falling in love with a free-spirited and wild girl while questioning his commitment to his country.

Tom Hanks has played a hero multiple times, whether in Captain Phillips or as Woody from Toy Story. Each time, he’s managed to bring something new and meaningful to the idea of being a hero. Thus, when Clint Eastwood approached Tom Hanks, proposing that he take on the role of Sully, the real-life hero who safely landed a plane on the Hudson River in 2009, Hanks found himself pausing before making a decision, in the 2016 film.
Clint Eastwood in Bronco Billy
But then Eastwood hit him with just three words that sealed the deal. And that decision turned out to be a major highlight in Hanks’ already impressive career.

Bassist Tony Kanal has embarked on a new career as a TV composer. But he had to put that aside for a special date tonight at Coachella with his friends in No Doubt.
Debuting in 1992, the Anaheim, California group has sold more than 33 million albums. As a member of No Doubt, he helped launch multi-platinum, iconic hits like “Don’t Speak,” “Just A Girl,” “Spiderwebs,” “Hella Good,” “Ex-Girlfriend,” and “It’s My Life” up the charts, netting a pair of Grammy wins, appearances on the covers of Rolling Stone, Alternative Press and Spin, and even a Kennedy Center Honors performance paying tribute to Sir Paul McCartney.
Tonight marks No Doubt’s first major headlining show since 2015.
Kanal has been collaborating with composer Blake Neely, an Emmy winner known for his work on The Arrowverse, Greyhound, and Riverdale, with Kanal guesting on Neely’s soundtrack for the DC Comics TV series Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Universal and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions are getting set to unleash director Dev Patel’s Monkey Man, which has been earning rave reviews on the festival scene.
Meagan Navarro wrote in her SXSW review for Bloody Disgusting, “Monkey Man presents Dev Patel as a new action hero, a tenacious underdog with a penetrating stare who bites, bludgeons, and stabs his way through bodies to gloriously bloody excess. The Cinema Audio Society Awards gave a boost to the Oscar hopes of “Oppenheimer” on Saturday. The film took top honors at these precursor prizes that honor sound mixing over one of its Oscar rivals for Best Sound — “Maestro”– as well as “Barbie,” “Ferrari,” “and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
The upcoming Oscars mark the fourth year for the Best Sound category, which combines Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. The Cas honors the latter while the Motion Picture Sound Editors salute achievements in the former.
Last year all five of the society’s favorites — “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Batman,” “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — sounded good to the academy’s sound branch. “Top Gun: Maverick” won both awards.
In 2022, four of the five Cas nominees — “Dune,” “No Time to Die,” “The Power of the Dog” and “West Side Story” — went on to contend at the Oscars.

Fabrizio Guido (Good Burger 2), Toby Sandeman (Power Book III: Raising Kanan), Chet Hanks (Your Honor), Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Roberto Sanchez (Queen of the South) have joined the cast of Mindy Kaling’s Netflix series, set in the world of pro basketball, starring Kate Hudson.
In addition to Hudson, they join previously announced cast Brenda Song, Drew Tarver and Scott MacArthur.
In the as-yet untitled comedy series, when a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon (Hudson) is appointed President of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job, especially in the unpredictable, male-dominated world of sports.

The World War II drama series "Masters of the Air," created by John Shiban and John Orloff and currently airing on AppleTV+, takes place in 1943 and follows Usaaf majors as they are transferred to England to aid the Allied war effort. Austin Butler plays Major Gale Cleven and Callum Turner plays Major John Egan, both real-life Usaaf pilots, and the series is based on the biographical book "Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany," written by Donald L. Miller.
"Masters of the Air" was also co-produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, who previously oversaw the WWII drama shows "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" after collaborating on the 1998 film "Saving Private Ryan." These two men love harrowing tales of soldiers and seem hellbent on recreating the 1940s soldiers' experience on film as accurately as possible. With Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 1 coming to a close on Tuesday, January 30, Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri are looking back on the adventure that was creating this Disney+ series. In the TV Insider video above, the golden trio shares the story of their first chemistry test as a group, revealing when they knew in their guts that they would be the show’s Percy, Annabeth, and Grover. Scobell was cast first, and then came the search for Percy’s quest mates and best friends. Landing the coveted roles required a lot of work from the young actors, who were just 13 and 15 years old when they were cast. Scobell read with all of the Annabeth and Grover hopefuls, and it was well worth the effort. Their scene was from the Greyhound bus in Episode 3, when the demigods and satyr have just begun their quest. When Percy...

Masters of the Air is the third entry in a collection of miniseries produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg about the United States’ involvement in World War II. Following Band of Brothers in 2001 and The Pacific in 2010, Masters of the Air takes to the skies to explore the U.S. Air Force’s efforts to take down the Axis Powers.
In speaking to Den of Geek prior to the series’ premiere on Apple TV+, executive producer of all three series Gary Goetzman explained how they were (or were not) related.
“We don’t ever cross over, you know,” Goetzman says. “Band of Brothers was its own thing. And the more anthological approach we took with The Pacific was its own thing. I feel this is different too. Their connection is they’re all facets of World War II performed differently and all heading for the same hopeful solution of getting rid of Hitler.

Apple TV’s new World War II epic Masters of the Air has faced a very steep climb to take flight, creatively speaking.
First, it had to live up to the legacy of its extraordinary predecessor, HBO’s 2001 limited series Band of Brothers, which some consider to be their all-time favorite war “movie.” BoB‘s successor, 2010’s The Pacific, showed, if anything, what a high bar the original set. And then there are the challenges of pulling off an air-war epic — it’s inherently tougher (for reasons we’ll get into), and potentially far more expensive (all those special effects shots), than infantry stories. Perhaps that’s why it’s taken more than a decade for Masters of the Air — which is based on Donald L. Miller’s book — to make the journey from concept to screen.

Monkey Man will release only in theaters April 5, and while it’s not a horror movie, it looks to be a violent action-thriller that will surely appeal to horror fans. Watch the trailer below!
This one had originally been set up at Netflix, but from what we gather, Peele was so thrilled with Patel’s vision that he pushed for the film to get a theatrical release from Universal.

Four of our five predicted Oscar nominees for Best Sound number among the contenders for the Cinema Audio Society Awards for sound mixing announced on Jan. 9. Oscar frontrunner “Oppenheimer” reaped a bid as did three of its closest competitors –“Ferrari,” “Maestro,” “and “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The fifth nominee at the Cas is “Barbie,” which we have in 7th place on our Oscars chart. It bumped our fourth-place contender “The Zone of Interest.”
The upcoming Oscars mark the fourth year for the Best Sound category, which combines Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. The Cas honors the latter while the Motion Picture Sound Editors salute achievements in the former.

Jo Koy probably won’t be back as Golden Globes host in 2025, but whatever his future may hold, good luck hiring writers after Sunday’s staff was thrown under the Greyhound.
With the Golden Globes still recovering from scandal, Koy faced an uphill battle. The wounds are so fresh that some winners thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association; the HFPA was disbanded over a lack of diversity. The Globes didn’t even have a real ceremony in 2022, but returned to TV last year.
Koy’s opening monologue was weak. (IndieWire TV critic Ben Travers called it “a catastrophe;” our Proma Khosla went with “lukewarm.”) Even weaker were his multiple attempts to save face.
From the start, it was clear that Koy was out of his element. Comics who sell out theaters, like Koy, are used to performing for people who specifically paid to see them. This room was not that.

Sony film division Screen Gems, best known for its lower-budgeted genre and comedy fare, is getting a shake-up.
Steve Bersch, the division’s president, is stepping down and retiring after a 16-year stint at Sony Pictures Entertainment. Scott Strauss, executive vp of production and development, is taking the moment to exit as well.
Sony Motion Picture Group chair Tom Rothman made the announcement in an email Friday, writing, “Despite my best efforts to persuade him otherwise, Steve Bersch has decided to step down from his role as President, Screen Gems, when his contract ends on December 1st. After nearly 16 years of distinguished service to Spe, and decades more in the business overall, Steve wants to pursue other life adventures – the lucky son of a gun!”

It is unclear who will be named to lead the division or if it will be merged with Sony’s other film divisions.

Exclusive: After nearly 16 years on the Culver City, CA lot, Steve Bersch, President of Screen Gems, is departing Sony when his contract ends on Dec. 1.
We understand it’s a very amicable exit, and that the executive, who is going out on a high note with the highest grossing horror movie of the year, Insidious: The Red Door ($188.5M), is eyeing other pursuits after a long career in the motion picture business. As Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group CEO and Chairman Tom Rothman says in his note to staff below, he tried to convince Bersch to stay.
Deadline also understands that Scott Strauss, EVP of Production for Screen Gems, will also be exiting when Bersch departs.
That box office result for Insidious: Red Door also repped the record for the $730M grossing franchise, one which Bersch has been with since Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group bought North American rights...

In a couple of months’ time — on September 19, to be exact — the Emmys will be held barring any delays due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Once those awards are out of the way, it will then be time to focus on the Academy Awards. However, some of us can’t wait that long and have already started thinking about potential nominees and contenders across all categories.
That includes below-the-line categories, however, as well as the obvious above-the-line ones. And so many of the below-the-line categories are made up of technical areas — Cinematography, Editing, Sound, and Visual Effects. That is four nominations that any one film could collect all in one go as so many have done before this year, such as “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” “Gravity,” “The Revenant,” and “Mad Max: Fury Road.” With that in mind, let’s take a look...

Nagpal, who worked on movies including Greyhound, Bombshell and The Good Liar, has launched Entropy Media with plans to launch five investigative, narrative non-fiction series this year.
First out of the gate is Brokers, Bagmen, and Moles. Premiering on April 26, the series starts on the Chicago trading floor of the 1980s — a workplace unlike any we know today — as the FBI mounts one of the most expensive, elaborate undercover investigations in its history. The film took top honors at these precursor prizes that honor sound mixing over all of its Oscar rivals for Best Sound: “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Elvis” and “The Batman.”
“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” won sound mixing in an animated feature over “Lightyear,” “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” and “Turning Red.”
And “Moonage Daydream” claimed the documentary feature prize over: “Good Night Oppy,” “Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song,” “Louis Armstrong’s Black and Blues,” and “The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari.”
The upcoming Oscars mark the third year for the Best Sound category, which combines Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. The Cas honors the latter while the Motion Picture Sound Editors salute achievements in the former.

There has been, for some time now, much discussion in regards to when (if ever) the box office will return to "normal." Are we ever going to get back to pre-pandemic levels of moviegoing? That remains to be seen but, as January rolls on in 2023, we have reason to be encouraged. Over the MLK holiday weekend, "Avatar: The Way of Water" proved its resilience, inching ever closer to becoming our first 2 billion movie since 2019. Meanwhile, "M3GAN" continues to cement herself as a modern horror icon, while "Puss in Boots" confirmed his status as a beloved pop culture figure divorced from "Shrek."
But that was just the holdovers! This holiday weekend also brought with it a trio of new releases in the forms of Lionsgate's action/thriller "Plane" (which I personally loved), Warner Bros.' "House Party" remake, and indie viral horror sensation "Skinamarink." Not to mention the Tom Hanks...

Bron, the Canadian financier which had slate deals with WB and MGM, has confirmed that it is downsizing and changing course.
Rumours have been swirling for a couple of months that the Joker backer has had to shed staff and will be unable to commit to big-canvas movies going forward. Indiewire had a piece up in late August which first highlighted the trouble. Bron has this week confirmed the changes.
A company executive said: “Bron is continuing to shift its business model as is the industry, and as such, there have been some changes at the company that allow us to fine tune as we look forward. We are focusing back to our core business as creative producers as it has always been about the content: animation, gaming, live-action film, tv, and non-scripted. There has been some turnover and some resetting as we focus our energies firmly on our content.

The movie business teaches you to be wary of big spenders. Broad Green came and went in a blur of miscalculated flops. Annapurna downsized after several reckless buying sprees and finally stopped acquiring movies altogether. Now comes whispers that Canadian investment studio Bron — which helped finance films like “Joker” and “Licorice Pizza” — is going down a similar path.
Sources tell me that the studio launched by husband-and-wife team Aaron and Brenda Gilbert in 2010 laid off several senior roles and will merge its film and TV divisions into a single unit. Rather than produce the live-action features, I’m told that Bron is now working to secure new corporate partners as it restructures its business model around its Bron Digital division. That means a renewed focus on animation and games designed to create new franchises, not the usual blend of blockbusters and A-list auteurs that it has supported in the past.

Actor Alex Wolff, who was last seen in Michael Sarnoski's critically acclaimed film "Pig," has found his next project. The actor will star in Oscar-winning filmmaker Aaron Schneider's "Untold" (via Deadline), a Holocaust survival drama based on the autobiography "I Escaped From Auschwitz" penned by Holocaust survivor Rudolf Vrba. The remarkable story is a firsthand account of Vrba's experiences as a registrar at Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest German Nazi concentration camp and extermination center in German-occupied Poland, and documents the heroic tale of his escape. His memoir is supported by testimonies that illustrate the unbearable, vivid horror he experienced during his 21-month internment.
Alex Wolff will portray Vrba in the film with Schneider at the helm. The filmmaker's latest slew of projects includes the Oscar and British Academy-nominated "Greyhound," the Apple TV World War II drama starring Tom Hanks. Schneider won the Academy Award back in 2003 for "Two...

Can you Believe that season 3 of Ted Lasso is right around the corner? Apple TV+’s feel-good, fish-out-of-water sports comedy that inexplicably began life as a series of commercials for NBC Sports has become maybe the most beloved new show of the 2020s. Jason Sudeikis’ mustached titular character is a beaming light of optimism and a balm in increasingly depressing times.
Season 2 found the overmatched football coach struggling with his mental health and unresolved trauma from his youth while the AFC Richmond squad battled to get promoted back into the Premier League. The season ended with Richmond successfully ascending to the top flight of English football, but in the process, the team lost “wonder kid” coach Nate (Nick Mohammed), who after feeling neglected by Ted all season defected to West Ham United, now owned by Rupert Mannion, the ex-husband of Hannah Waddingham’s delightful Rebecca Welton.

Shortly after Chloe Okuno’s “Watcher” begins, Julia (Maika Monroe) asks her husband to wake her before he goes to work the next morning. But when she gets up the day is half gone, and all he did was send Julia a text with a creepy picture of her sleeping, insisting that she was just too danged pretty to listen to her.
Needless to say, this is not a man who’s going to believe his wife when she says she’s being stalked by a serial killer.
“Watcher” is a harsh and lonely thriller about a woman who moves to Romania to be with her husband, Francis when he gets a new job. Unlike Francis, she doesn’t speak the language. She’s trying to learn, but for now she’s dependent on locals who happen to understand English or her husband’s translations, which she assumes are accurate and flattering.
