Jim Backus' first major acting gig was playing a snotty millionaire named Dexter Hayes on the 1940 radio serial "Society Girl." This was to kick off a decades-long career in radio, film, and television, wherein Backus invented multiple indelible characters that remain a part of the pop fabric to this very day. He appeared on "The Jack Benny Program" and even briefly had his own TV show, "The Jim Backus Show" in 1957. He famously played the voice of Mr. Magoo from 1949 until his death in 1989, and starred in "Rebel Without a Cause." He was adept at playing clueless weirdos and self-absorbed egotists, although he had a great deal of comedic range. Be sure to listen to his hit comedy single "Delicious!" sometime. He elicits laughter without saying anything. I could list more credits, but we'd be here all day; Backus starred in over 100 films and shorts, and several dozen TV shows.

The second season of the Marvel Studios series "Loki" begins on Disney+ this week, and there are certainly plenty of new time traveling adventures on the way for the God of Mischief. When we last saw Loki (Tom Hiddleston), he'd been betrayed by his variant Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), who killed He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) and unleashed a bunch of new timeline branches. This violated the preservation of the Sacred Timeline by the Time Variance Authority and created the growing threat of a bunch of He Who Remains variants, who will all be a force to reckon with in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Oh, and she sent Loki to a timeline where no one at the Tva knew who he was, not even Mobius (Owen Wilson).

"Gourmet cuisine is not for the common man." Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted an official US trailer for a French historic drama titled Delicious, originally Délicieux in French. This premiered at the Rendezvous with French Cinema Festival, and stopped by others including Festival du Cinéma Français in Israel and the Norwegian Film Festival. Set in France in 1789, just before the Revolution. A chef who has been sacked by his master, with the help of a woman, finds the strength to free himself from being a servant to open the very first restaurant. Is this a true story? I've always wondered where restaurants came from, and how they developed! Of course it's France staking claim to the very beginning. The cast of Delicious includes Gregory Gadebois, Isabelle Carre, Benjamin Lavernhe, Guillaume de Tonquédec, Christian Bouillette, Lorenzo Lefèbvre, & Marie-Julie Baup. Looks like it's quite a sumptuous watch, especially for foodies. Here's the...

Palace Cinemas national programming director Kim Petalas will step down from his role in late December after some 30 years with the company.
However, while he is leaving to spend more time with his family, he will continue to advise the exhibitor in his semi-retirement.
Of his decision, the industry veteran – also the director of the British Film Festival – tells If: “I felt that it was time, after such a long innings, to allow somebody else to come in with some fresh ideas, and for me to assist and help out wherever I can.
“It’s hard to leave an industry and in particular, an organisation, that I just love so much. I’ll do anything in the background to assist Palace moving forward.”
Petalas has always had an “incredible passion” for film, and started at Palace developing the group booking business, before stepping into the programming director role some 28 years ago.

The summer movie season may be winding down but Amazon Prime still has a hit or two up its sleeve in August 2021.
Amazon’s list new arrivals this month is highlighted by Evangelion:3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon A Time. That may be a mouthful of a name but it’s a big deal in the anime world. The streamer nagged exclusive rights to the final film in the Neon Genesis Evangelion film franchise known as “Rebuild of Evangelion”. With the future of the franchise up in the air, this could be the last chance in awhile for anime fans worldwide to catch some mecha action.

Film aficionados will want to keep an eye on Amazon Prime Video in August, as the streaming giant is set to debut two Cannes Film Festival premieres: “Val,” a new documentary about Val Kilmer that uses archival footage shot by the actor himself, and “Annette,” Leos Carax award-winning musical (it won best director at Cannes) starring Adam Driver and Maron Cotillard and featuring music by Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks.
But beyond the Prime Video originals, the Amazon library content added to the service next month is vast and impressive. Among the major movies coming to Prime Video include “Aliens,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “Jaws,” “Moneyball,” and “Predator.” Meanwhile, IMDb TV, the free service that users can access without a corresponding Amazon Prime subscription, will host “Apollo 13,” “La La Land,” and “Ghostbusters” among many other big titles.

November can be a slow month for streaming services. Amazon, however, is entering into 2020’s penultimate month with some steam.
Amazon is really beefing up its TV library in November 2020. Both Community (which arrives on Nov. 8) and Scrubs (Nov. 14) will be added to Amazon Prime this month and in the process complete the streaming trifecta: Netflix, Amazon, Hulu. That’s pretty impressive stuff for both shows. And then on the film side of things, November 1 sees the arrival of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Twilight, and the Underworld franchise. Somebody didn’t tell Amazon Spooky Season was over and bless them for it.
As for the originals, Alex Rider is the most intriguing TV series here. That is based on the British spy novel series and premieres on Nov. 13 on IMDb TV (which is available to all Prime subscribers). That will be followed by Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series on Nov.

Irish actor Ruairi O’Connor will play rock ‘n’ roll icon Buddy Holly in the biopic “Clear Lake” with a tentative production start date set for the spring.
O’Connor, who stars as a young King Henry VIII in the Starz miniseries “The Spanish Princess,” was selected following a six-month search by the producers and casting directors at Presser/Well Casting to find the right actor who both resembled Holly and could handle vocals and instrumentation on classic songs such as “Everyday,” “That’ll Be the Day” and “Not Fade Away.”
The BMG-backed “Clear Lake” will helmed by Bruce Beresford, who received Oscar nominations for the “Breaker Morant” script and for directing “Tender Mercies.” He also directed “Driving Miss Daisy,” which won the Academy Award for best picture. Producers are Rick French (“Not Without Hope”) of Prix Productions and Stuart Benjamin of Stuart Benjamin Productions.

The coronavirus couldn't have come at a worse time for currently airing broadcast television hoping to end their full seasons.
Heck, it's not good for upcoming series or pilots under consideration, either.
While it's possible bubble shows might get a second life so their already carved path continues and viewers can snuggle in with what's already comfortable, if production stoppage goes on for a long time, seasons might not end at all and fall TV could get delayed until January 2021.
But amidst all of the chaos, there are silver linings.
We talk about the glut of great programming all the time and how impossible it is to watch what you want. What better time to check out alternatives than when all of your time is spent indoors?

Though it’s yet to launch in the UK and other parts of Europe, Disney+ has already proven itself to be a major player in North America – thanks in large part to its suite of digital content, which ranges from Marvel Studios to Star Wars and everything in between.
And much like its online peers, Disney+ is still to roll out a fresh wave of content for April 2020, beginning with Doctor Dolittle on April 1st – not to be confused with the recent remake starring McU mainstay Robert Downey Jr.
What’s more, April marks Earth Month, so you can expect plenty of eco-friendly documentaries to air via National Geographic. Indeed, it’s fair to say that the Disney+ lineup has fast become one of the most diverse on the market. From new episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars to age-old classics like Doctor Dolittle, there’s really something for everyone.

Action Bronson is a 21st century renaissance man. A hip-hop icon who recently released his fifth album, “White Bronco,” the Flushing, Queens, native, whose real name is Ariyan Arslani — with a Muslim Albanian father and Latvian Jewish mother — is probably best-known for hosting a pair of TV series for Viceland: the talk variety “The Untitled Action Bronson Show,” and the travel food series “F—, That’s Delicious.”
His new book, “Stoned Beyond Belief”, is a paean to the miracle of cannabis. It’s a sort of “Whole Earth Catalog” meets Baba Ram Dass’ psychedelic classic “Be Here Now,” a guide to all things herbal, from recipes for his mom’s banana pudding, cheesecake and challah, to ruminations on botany, fast food and the joys of cruising while stoned.
Hunkering down for what he lovingly terms a “sesh” (short for “session”), Bronson admits that “Stoned Beyond Belief” was created — with its...

The final months of Marilyn Monroe’s life are set to be dramatized in a new series from BBC Studios that will explore her relationship with Hollywood studios and with public figures such as JFK and Bobby Kennedy.
BBC Studios, the BBC’s production and commercial arm, has teamed up with Dan Sefton and Simon Lupton’s U.K. indie producer Seven Seas Films to develop the new show. It has the working tile “The Last Days of Marilyn Monroe” and will be based on parts of Keith Badman’s book “The Final Years of Marilyn Monroe: The Shocking True Story.”
Monroe, who died in 1962 at age 36, remains the subject of enduring fascination. The producers said the series would cover a period in which her behavior became increasingly erratic as her dependence on alcohol and medication caused her glittering film career to plunge.

Acorn TV has acquired Dutch disappearance drama The Oldenheim Twelve from Endemol Shine International.
The North American Svod service has picked up the twelve-part series, which was originally commissioned by Dutch broadcaster RTL4.
The show, which was written by Lex Passchier and Martin van Steijn and directed by Anne van der Linden, tells the story of the disappearance of a teenage girl, which in turn leads to a series of bizarre experiences. After 16-year-old Nine disappears one summer evening, a second inhabitant of Oldenheim disappears and it doesn’t stop there, with several other people from the village community disappearing. Is there a serial killer at large or is something supernatural going on? RTL4 has already ordered a second season.
The U.S. deal was struck by Matt Creasey, Evp Sales and Acquisitions, while Endemol Shine International has also sold the drama to Wowwow in Japan and Showjet and Ivi.

(Spoiler alert: Read at your own risk if you haven’t seen all of Amazon’s “Picnic at Hanging Rock.”)
By the end of the Amazon limited series “Picnic at Hanging Rock” audiences still don’t know what happened to the girls who went missing at the beginning. But showrunner and director Larysa Kondracki hopes her “enchanted chiller” will give fans an “emotionally satisfying conclusion” nonetheless.
If that’s not good enough for you, Kondracki told TheWrap she has her own “cockamamy idea” about what happened to the young ladies at the center of the TV adaptation based on Joan Lindsay’s iconic Australian novel of the same name, which the director describes as “‘Heathers’ meets ‘The Breakfast Club,’ with a little bit of ‘The Shining.'”

Are you a fan of television from faraway lands?
Maybe you don't even know how much you enjoy shows produced in foreign countries because it's not crossed your mind to think about it.
A lot of the shows we watch in the Us are (dare I say it?) reboots of programming that has already aired elsewhere. While we're lucky enough to get some shows (Downton Abbey, Rosehaven, The A Word, Doctor Who), many others are left across the seas.
Some very savvy people finally got wise to the fact that for every person in the Us who loved The Killing, another might have wanted to see the original. Today I'm talking about the first of three online networks that bring to you programming from around the world.

Sky is cooking up Delicious series 2! Dawn French and Emilia Fox will return...
Prepare for some more TV that's saucy in multiple ways! Sky 1 has officially ordered Delicious series 2, with creator Dan Sefton and stars Dawn French and Emilia Fox set to return for more food-adjacent romantic drama later this year.
The renewal news doesn't exactly come as a surprise. As CultBox tells us, series 1 of the show - which saw French's Gina and Fox's Sam battling for the affections of Iain Glen's sexy chef Leo - was Sky's most-viewed UK drama series last year. Of course the big cheeses behind the scenes want some seconds.
CultBox also has lots of quotes from people involved in the show, like this one from Dawn French...
