Though always intended to be a feature film, People with Issues underwent several changes in the years it took to get made. A 2013 short film was intended to be a proof-of-concept piece to raise funds for a feature film. The short film "People with Issues" attained success in its own right, winning several awards and placement in festivals, but it failed to raise the funds necessary for funding. In May 2014, after successfully raising money through a crowd-funding campaign to make the 48-minutes web-series, using primarily the same cast who had not changed much in the year in between production. Then in February 2016, season 2 of the web-series became the necessary batch of filming to take what was already shot and re-purpose the entire project as a singular narrative/feature film as always intended.
Filmed in three batches through three years - 2 days in Feb 2013, 8 days in summer 2014, 12 days in February 2016. All in Austin, TX.
Co-creator Jeff Storms, who is also one of the film composers, doubled as Jack's hands for the music audition scene. Adam Mengesha learned to mime playing the guitar.
The comic con scene was comprised of two days of filming - the portion where Darren talks with Peter Simpson was a set built in a multipurpose room in the same library where Jack and Roberta's scenes were filmed. Then with a skeleton crew consisting of director, DP, 1st AC, and actor Dano Colon the Hero Con served as a backdrop and namesake for the scenes requiring extras.
The opening tracking shot where the three main characters walk through the house was a race against the clock because the sun was starting to go down. It was ultimately the 7th out of 9 takes that was used.
