The Sundance Film Festival has announced its line-up for its 40th incarnation.
The 2024 fest will see new entries from fest regulars like Steven Soderbergh, Lana Wilson and Richard Linklater, while also debuting titles from new directors with 40 percent of the features program coming from first time feature filmmakers. A-list talent like Kirsten Stewart, Pedro Pascal, Lucy Liu, Laura Linney and Woody Harrelson star in fest films, while onscreen talents like Jesse Eisenberg and Chiwetel Ejiofor continue their forays into directing.
This year’s fest marks the first with Eugene Hernandez at the helm as festival director. “This will be my 30th time attending the festival,” Hernandez tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Now, to have this different vantage point, I was able to witness exactly what goes into [the festival] I have loved and cared about for so long.”
The festival had over 17,000 submission, with programmers noting this is the most in the history of the festival.

60 years ago, Doctor Who was created with a strong educational element, mixing science and history facts with adventure. Initially some stories featured no science-fiction elements outside of the Tardis and its crew. This story format petered out by the fourth season, and ′The Highlanders′ was the last example until ′Black Orchid′ in 1982.
The final story of the second season created the ′Pseudo-historical′ format – a story set in Earth′s history but with an additional science-fiction element to the Tardis crew. This format persists to the present day. By ′Best Historical Episodes′ here, we don’t mean the dozen or so purely historical stories, but are including pseudo-historical stories too.
Some of these stories have a historical setting based around a historical celebrity. Others are more intertwined with historical events and use that setting as a springboard for their stories, but they all represent the best the show has delivered so far.

Happy Monday, dear readers! We have one last group of horror and sci-fi home media releases arriving before we say goodbye to January, and I hope your wallets are prepared for just how many killer releases are heading home this weekend, because there’s a lot of great titles that are arriving this Tuesday.
In terms of new genre projects, Synchronic from Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead as well as Come Play are both headed to Blu-ray and DVD, and if the release of the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer this weekend got you hyped for some kaiju action, Arrow Video is showing some love to Gamera this week with two different limited edition sets: Gamera: The Heisei Era and Gamera: The Showa Era. The only thing better than listening to a Doctor Who podcast? Listening to a Who podcast while helping to make the world a better place.
Over 50 Doctor Who podcasters, writers, and artists—as well as Classic Who star Sophie Aldred (aka Ace)—are coming together to record commentaries for Season 26, the final season of Classic Who, on the 30th anniversary of its original broadcast. The more urgent occasion? To raise money for a cause The Doctor supports wholeheartedly: increasing access to education around the world.
The campaign is called #WhoForSchools, and those who contribute at least $10 to one of the suggested organizations committed to expanding educational access and supporting the work of teachers will gain access to the exclusive podcast commentaries, which won't be available anywhere else. The campaign will also feature giveaways of Doctor Who-related books, comics, and other Who surprises.

Family can lift you up, or they can drag you down.
In the case of Jimmy Downey, his family filled with abuse and crime threatened to pull him under so far he escaped leaving them far behind.
But when Jimmy's beloved mother, Rose, dies, Jimmy heads back to his hometown to face a lifetime of disillusion and disappointment that he was never able to escape no matter how much distance he set.
Michael Rowe, best known by TV Fanatics as Floyd Lawton/Deadshot on Arrow, stars as Jimmy, a police officer brimming with loneliness and unreleased anger.
His escape from St. John's, Newfoundland, to Toronto didn't heal his wounds after watching his father brutalize his mother for years, nor did it ease his pain at walking away and leaving his family to their own devices even if Jimmy was trying to be a better man.

The Haunted Comedy is a genre that probably reached its height in the 1940s with movies like Abbott and Costello's Hold that Ghost.
There was another wave of them during the 1980s with Haunted Honeymoon starring Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner, and High Spirits with Steve Guttenberg and Daryl Hannah.
To be clear, a haunted comedy is not the same as the horror comedies of the 90s like the Scream spoofs of the Scary Movie franchise.
Ghost Light is a comedy first, and one that deals with the goofy antics of the theater crowd.
Tempting Fate Review: Mistakes Were Made!
It's through their idiosyncracies and superstitions that the haunting gets explored.
If you didn't know, one of those superstitions is that the play, Macbeth, is cursed. You can't say the title lest the entire production get cursed.
Quoting lines before the production is also verboten, especially when noting the witches incantations.
