Two years have gone by since a psychological thriller called Apartment 7A – which Relic (watch it Here) director Natalie Erika James helmed for Paramount Players and A Quiet Place collaborators Platinum Dunes and John Krasinski – wrapped filming. Soon after filming came to an end, rumors began to circulate that Apartment 7A was secretly a prequel to the 1968 classic Rosemary’s Baby… and now those rumors have been proven to be true! Deadline broke the news that Apartment 7A will finally be making its way out into the world this fall, as it’s set to receive a Paramount+ release in the U.S. and in select international markets, and in their report they confirmed that this is indeed a Rosemary’s Baby prequel. Maybe the fact that the Omen prequel The First Omen went over well with viewers inspired Paramount to finally release this horror prequel.

‘Last Night at Terrace Lanes’ Review – Bowling Slasher Lands Somewhere Between Strike and Gutterball
In the pantheon of cool horror movie locations, the bowling alley is an overlooked gem. Unsurprisingly, the tendency to feature a disembodied body part being flung down the lane means that such films are frequently horror comedies.
Last Night at Terrace Lanes adopts a slasher approach (see: Gutterballs – or don’t), but maintains a humorous tone. The film, from director Jamie Nash and written by YA horror author Adam Cesare (working from a story by Jenna St. John), has a great logline: what if a killer cult attacked a bowling alley?
Sadly, the finished product struggles with its execution, leading to a decidedly mixed comedy slasher.
It’s the last night of business at Terrace Lanes, an aged bowling alley scheduled for demolition. Among the employees and the regulars bowling one last time, there’s Kennedy (Francesca Capaldi), a queer teen looking for some solo time with her crush Tess...

After wrapping up 2023 with look at New French Extremity in Inside (listen), horror musicals in Anna and the Apocalypse (listen) and the Best Horror Films of 2023 (listen), we’re kicking off our first official episode of 2024 with a lengthy discussion of Tony Randel‘s better-than-it-has-any-right-to-be sequel Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988), which just celebrated its 35th anniversary!
Hellbound: Hellraiser II picks up hours after the first film ended, seeing Kirsty Cotton (Ashley Laurence) confined to a mental hospital after she tells the authorities that her father was betrayed by his evil, adulterous wife, Julia (Clare Higgins), and is now being tormented in hell by sadomasochistic demons called Cenobites. Few believe Kirsty, except the thrill-seeking Dr. Channard (Kenneth Cranham), who is so intrigued by her frightening stories that he teams up with a newly resurrected Julia. Inside sees newly widowed (and very pregnant) Sarah (Alysson Paradis) spending Christmas Eve alone as she waits to be induced the next morning. Unfortunately for her, a mysterious, scissors-wielding woman known only as La Femme (Béatrice Dalle) has designs on her unborn child, and will stop at nothing until she gets it.

‘Tis the season to watch holiday-themed horror, so we here at Arrow in the Head have decided to compile a list of the Best Christmas Horror Movies! All of the films below are, at the very least, set around Christmastime, and some of them take the connection to the holidays further than that. Here are the top 12 horror movies that we recommend checking out over the next week:
I Come In Peace (1990)
It’s easy to forget that I Come in Peace (a.k.a. Dark Angel) is set around the Christmas holiday, because Christmas is mostly just represented by some set decorations – and you’re distracted from those decorations by all the awesome stuff going on around them. Dolph Lundgren stars as Jack Caine, a Houston detective who doesn’t play by the rules. He’s stuck working with stuffy, suit-wearing FBI agent Larry Smith (Brian Benben), and these...

It’s good to see a steady stream of festive horror films being released year-on-year. Recently we’ve had everything from musicals such as Anna and the Apocalypse, to comedy action such as Violent Night. We’ve even been allowed to get a sneak peak of next year’s bloody Christmas as Art the Clown will seemingly take on the role of Santa Claus in Terrifier 3. However, this year we are gifted with a small present that has been placed delicately towards the back of the tree. That present is It’s a Wonderful Knife, and you should unwrap it as soon as you can.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year according to Andy Williams, but that’s not the case for Winnie Carruthers (Jane Widdop). As others around her, including all of her immediate family, are thriving, Winnie is still traumatised by events of the...

Like many people, you might think you’ve seen everything when it comes to zombie movies. But there’s always somebody with a new idea, a fresh and original take on the horror genre. Films like One Cut of the Dead, Anna and the Apocalypse, and Train to Busan, have all added something new to the zombie movie, and this Norwegian production tries to do the same.
And Project Z is somewhat original. It takes things from various other movies to create something that is quite unique. To start with, this is a found footage movie, and there’s actually not a whole lot of found footage zombie movies. It doesn’t exactly play out like other films in that horror subgenre though, because it’s a movie about people making a movie.

If you were a regular on Twitter back in 2017, you probably came across the viral ghost story thread dubbed “Dear David.” Former BuzzFeed cartoonist Adam Ellis began his tale with the simple but potent promise: “So, my apartment is currently being haunted by the ghost of a dead child and he’s trying to kill me.”
From there, he unfolded the tale through hundreds of tweets — with photographs and hand-drawn images — over a series of weeks, his followers rapt with each update. So naturally, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood came calling.
Five years later, the “Dear David” movie is here, directed by John McPhail (“Anna and the Apocalypse”), who told TheWrap he was drawn to the horror story’s creator as much as he was Ellis’ chilling tale.
“It was the character of Adam Ellis himself. That’s what drew me in,” McPhail said. “Because when it was happening…...

“It was the character of Adam Ellis himself. That’s what drew me in,” McPhail said. “Because when it was happening…...

I’ve never been especially afraid that Janicza Bravo’s inimitable “Zola” might pave the way for more films based on Twitter threads; in the time since one of history’s biggest losers began to delegitimize the platform just because he’s so bad at using it, not once have I found myself wondering: “But where are we going to get our movies!?”
If anything, I expected BuzzFeed Studios’ “Dear David” — adapted from a viral, months-long thread that a former employee of the internet-famous content mill wrote about the ghost haunting his Queens apartment — to inspire some nostalgia for the days when the website formerly known as Twitter was still a wellspring of new media creativity, and not just a toxic cesspool of hate and misinformation. Alas, this low-rent, no-energy, seen-it-all-before genre wank left me absolutely terrified of returning to an era when micro-blogged cries for help could last for...

Back in 2017, BuzzFeed writer Adam Ellis wrote out a ghost story (which he swears is completely true) on Twitter, and that story caught so much attention that there was soon talk of a movie adaptation. BuzzFeed comic artist Adam Ellis began a Twitter thread in 2017 that went viral as it chronicled the eerie happenings within his apartment, with sleep paralysis giving glimpses of the specter responsible, a young ghost boy with a misshapen head named David. The movie adaptation of that thread, Dead David, aims to expand the paranormal mystery that haunted Ellis by turning inward, using Ellis and his online habits to craft a supernaturally charged cautionary tale of online bullying.
Comic artist Adam (Augustus Prew) is no stranger to internet trolls working for Buzzfeed, but one day, he hits his limit and fires back. His angry replies draw attention, and Adam soon after finds himself experiencing sleep paralysis and bizarre phenomena in his apartment. As the paranormal encounters increase with malevolence, Adam takes to Twitter to detail the happenings. Adam’s boss (Justin Long) encourages him to play up the haunting online, but...

Filmmakers Rkss show their mean streak in "Wake Up," a barbarically nasty hunt-and-stalk flick for the sake of viciousness. It's not especially complicated, nor does that matter. "Wake Up" is foaming at the mouth with primal thrills that do not care for mercy. Rkss presents their contemporary riff on "The Most Dangerous Game" in a department store setting, taking aim at unlucky Gen Z'ers who become trophy kills. Nothing matters but survival; a refreshingly focused take on apex predator material that veers into sickening slasher territory.

Social media activists hide themselves throughout the showroom floor for an elaborate protest stunt that will expose Idea's cruel deforestation practices, then pop out undetected. New Life is a low-key ground-floor beginning of-the-apocalypse thriller. A character-driven piece of one woman’s fight to evade capture and another woman’s race to find her. Told from two very uniquely distinctive perspectives worlds apart yet not so different.
As a lover of the “end of the world” genre I’m always keen to see projects dealing with the beginnings of the event. Yes, sometimes times they can be snooze fests like Side Effects but when done right you get movies like Outbreak. You could also go full musical and give the world Anna and the Apocalypse (my favourite Xmas movie). Where does New Life fit in though?
We follow Jessie (Hayley Erin) who after a chance meeting with a pooch that has recently escaped the lab, she unknowingly contracts a rare string of the Ebola virus.

Max Causey (Jared Korotkin) would probably be on the Naughty List if he hadn’t accidentally killed the man who writes it one fateful Christmas Eve when he was just six years old. Flash forward 12 years and Max still feels guilty about his trap that sent Santa to an early grave along with the world’s Christmas spirit. But although Max buried Santa’s body all those years ago, he kept Saint Nick’s brain fresh in a jar, and thanks to a groundbreaking electrocution experiment he’s been working on with his brilliant friend, Paige Byers (Ophelia Rivera), as well as the body parts he’s been stealing from the local morgue, Max sees an opportunity to finally bury his own guilt and bring Santa back from the dead. The only problem? Once resurrected, this new version of Santa, aka “Santastein,” has something much worse than coal in store...

You've seen A24 films about somewhat literal man-eating aliens ("Under the Skin"), people being turned into walruses ("Tusk"), farting corpses ("Swiss Army Man"), talking shells ("Marcel the Shell with Shoes On"), and the multiverse ("Everything Everywhere All at Once"). Now, the studio is trying its hand at a musical for the first time with "Dicks: The Musical," a film that, contrary to my expectations the first time I saw that title, is not about singing penises. I mean, A24 only just made a film featuring a giant penis monster, so it wasn't out of the question.
Backing up -- "Dicks: The Musical" comes from relative newcomers Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, who both wrote the film -- which is based on their original two-person stage musical "F***ing Identical Twins" -- and star as a pair of obnoxious business bros who find out they're literal twins and conspire to get their divorced parents back together.

"The Last of Us" is a bit of a deceiving game. At first glance, there doesn't seem to be any immediate thing that separates this from, well, any of the other dozens of zombie shows and movies from the past few decades. This is no groundbreaking mix of genres like "Juan of the Dead," or "Shaun of the Dead," or even an inventive romp like the zombie musicals "Anna and the Apocalypse" and "The Happiness of the Katakuris." The game doesn't necessarily add something drastically new to the mythology of the zombie like the fast zombies in "28 Days Later" or giant mutant ones from "Resident Evil."
And yet, the games, and now the HBO adaptation, take what you know about the zombie genre and make small but significant changes that quickly add up to a very special and unique story. "The Last of Us" is more than a story about surviving the apocalypse,...

The Christmas season is advertised as a time for "peace on earth" and "goodwill toward men," but for a lot of us, the holidays are little more than a headache and a half. It's hard not to feel like such a Grinch this time of year when everyone else seems to be filled with joy, but fortunately, there are movies to help us anti-sentimentality Scrooges feel a little less alone. We've talked before on /Film about some of the best alternative Christmas movies (that aren't "Die Hard"), but we've never broken down why these films are so important. I might be acting overdramatic by calling these films "non-sentimental," as there's plenty of sentiment to be found in any story (as long as you know where to look), but I think we can all agree that the sentiment of something like Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" is in stark contrast to Bob Clark's "Black Christmas.

Every year brings the annual rewatches of my holiday favorites and an occasional new one, and it's looking increasingly likely that "Violent Night" may become one of them. I'll happily bawl over the emotional catharsis of "It's a Wonderful Life," but sometimes the reason for the season calls for a horror zombie musical ("Anna and the Apocalypse") or a visit from German folklore ("Krampus"). 2022's "Violent Night" appears to fixate quite nicely in the middle, featuring "Stranger Things" star David Harbour as he doles out some bloody season's beatings in the name of Christmas. Sometimes all you need is a movie that envisions Santa Claus going all John McClane in order to protect a good kid from a group of mercenaries on Christmas Eve. The cherry on top is that this yuletide beatdown comes from director Tommy Wirkola, the filmmaker behind "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" and the "Dead Snow" series.

Much like Eating Miss Campbell, which also featured Charlie Bond and James Hamer-Morton, Powertool Cheerleaders vs. The Boyband of the Screeching Dead feels very much like a Troma movie.

No matter what anyone says, the zombie genre is far from dead. Every couple of years we still get a brilliant new take on the genre that adds something new or at least fun, from "Train to Busan," to "Anna and the Apocalypse," to the incredible love letter to Dyi filmmaking, "One Cut of the Dead."
The micro-budget Japanese horror-comedy was made for 25,000, with a cast of unknown actors and an independent director who had only done one other feature before. Yet the film charmed audiences with its hilarious, gory tale of a group of intrepid filmmakers...

There are some things we just automatically associate with Christmas. Tinsel, Christmas trees, crackers with bad jokes in, fairy lights. There are also stories we keep coming back to at this time of year. Scrooge and his ghosts, George Bailey seeing what the world would be like if he’d never been born, and yes, John McClane single-handedly foiling a terrorist attack that is actually an elaborate heist.
But one thing you probably don’t associate with Christmas is hordes of the shambling undead attempting to batter your door down and feast on your brains.
In 2017 Anna and the Apocalypse set out to change all that, becoming the first high school zombie Christmas musical to hit cinema screens. But while zombies and Christmas might seem like an unusual combination, Anna and the Apocalypse reveals the genres are a surprisingly good fit for one another.
Christmas is Not Unlike A Zombie Apocalypse
The streets are empty.

Artist Adam Ellis has brought a lot of joy into our lives with comics featuring ridiculous topics like gender reveal parties that reveal the baby is going to be a lizard, "Squid Game" workers using dalgona candy to ask if a competitor has a crush on them, and the uncomfortable possibility that mermaids are fish heads with human bodies. With 1.7 million followers on Instagram, it's next to impossible that someone who uses the internet hasn't seen at least something drawn by Ellis. Yes, I'm including all of our weird Great Aunts who still post "Minions" memes about "wine o'clock"...
