- GoofsWhen talking about langurs in episode 5 the narrator states that over the course of a month's shooting the monkeys become totally used to the (static) spy monkey.
But the whole premise of the series is that the animatronic models are so realistic that they blend in almost perfectly and thus provide previously unobtainable footage of the animals they are filming.
However, if they need a month to be accepted by the other animals then this is obviously not true and in fact (for the monkeys anyway) any inanimate object (rock, tree stump, etc.) could be used to hide a camera for the same effect. Thus there would be no need to design, build and film with such complicated and, presumably expensive, models.

Up and personal in love
'Spy in the Wild' is a great series, very well made, fascinating and entertaining with amazing animals with unique behaviours in their ways of adapting. If anybody wants something different from the David Attenborough documentaries (unsurpassed in the genre in my view and his best work are milestones) once in a while, 'Spy in the Wild' and David Tennant are more than welcome substitutes and it was great to see wildlife explored in a more intimate way not seen before in this way.
"Love" is an excellent first episode. It establishes the tone of 'Spy in the Wild' perfectly and gives one a very good idea of what to expect watching the series. Exploring all the different kinds of love between animals up close, "Love" delighted from start to finish and always fascinated and entertained. It could easily have been very gimmicky and the whole spy camera trick could have been in danger of being difficult to take seriously, but that is luckily avoided.
It is absolutely beautifully filmed for one thing. The colours burst out vividly without being garish or over-saturated and also really loved the intimacy of the photography (one of 'Spy in the Wild's' biggest pleasures and interest points). Especially in the languar monkey sequence. The spies are very well used, even though the spy camera is a gimmick essentially it is not an overused or abused one. The look of the spy animals did vary in the series, some in some episodes did look on the cheap and too robotic side to the point of creepiness. Not here, not hard to see why Spy Tortoise was mistaken for a real one (in other episodes of the series it was not as easy to swallow).
The music in "Love" also fits nicely. Sometimes it is cute, like with the wild dogs. Sometimes it is playful, like with the penguins. Sometimes it has emotional impact, namely in the languar monkeys sequence. The narration is a lovely mix of the funny and heart-warming without being childish or treacly, and is also very educational. If one wants to see a different change of pace from Attenborough, Tennant is as good as one can get. He treats the material with sincerity but doesn't treat it as a sermon and manages to make it fun and accessible as well. He is particularly good in the more humorous moments and sounded like he was as in awe of the penguin mating season scene as the viewer is.
A big star here is the animals and it is truly amazing to see unique animal behaviours and emotions so intimately (some not seen before), the languar monkey sequence especially. It was interesting to see a different side to the wild dogs, not vicious here as can be portrayed usually but one sees a softer maternal side one doesn't usually see instead. The standout scenes though are the amusing and awe-inspiring male tortoise in love and the heart-breaking languar monkeys ones.
While the spy animals mostly are well used, Spy Penguin is a little more obvious than the others and its movements not as smooth.
Overall though, an excellent start to this great series. 9/10
