Puberty can only last so long.
“Big Mouth” has been renewed for Season 8 at Netflix, which will be the animated comedy’s final installation. Additionally, “Big Mouth” spinoff “Human Resources” will end with its previously greenlit second season.
This makes “Big Mouth” Netflix’s longest running original series, excluding kids and family programming. Previously, “Grace and Frankie” and “Orange Is the New Black” shared that title with seven seasons each.
Inspired by the childhoods of co-creators Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg, “Big Mouth” follows a group of friends and their hormone monsters as they navigate adolescence, human sexuality and coming of age. Kroll starred alongside John Mulaney, Jessi Klein, Jason Mantzoukas and Ayo Edebiri (whose role was originally played by Jenny Slate). Season 6 debuted in 2022, while Season 7 will come in 2023 and 2024.
“Human Resources” is set in the world of the hormone monsters from “Big Mouth,” where different monsters are assigned to govern human emotions.

Netflix has sealed a new three-year deal with Brutus Pink, which extends their relationship with the animation production company behind “Big Mouth” and its new companion series “Human Resources.” The extension will keep Brutus Pink, which is run by Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett, developing and producing new animated projects for Netflix through 2026.
“Brutus Pink is thrilled to be continuing at Netflix, which has been our creative home for seven years,” Levin said in a statement. “We’re hopeful this means we get to keep the ‘Con Air’ DVD that’s been sitting on Nick’s coffee table in a red envelope since 2006.”
The Emmy-winning “Big Mouth” is an adult animated comedy exploring puberty (and hormone monsters) and was inspired by Kroll and Goldberg’s childhood. Launched in 2017, “Big Mouth” returns for Season 6 this fall, while Season 2 of “Human Resources” will be back next year.

With just over 70 features, this year’s Sundance Film Festival was smaller than usual, but not any quieter. While Park City was dormant as most audiences viewed the lineup online, the movies drove plenty of buzz. Few titles entered the festival with distribution, and studios begged off the usual tendency to use the festival as a marketing launch pad. Instead, Sundance retained one crucial aspect of its DNA above all: The breakouts.
Ever since it came to prominence more than 30 years ago, Sundance has been a platform for discovering new talent, from distinctive filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino and Ryan Coogler to acting discoveries like Parker Posey and Tessa Thompson. This time around, there were no shortage of discoveries, in addition to established talents moving into exciting new career phases. Here are the highlights.

“Together Together” features an enviable cast of comedy favorites, from big name faves like Ed Helms and Tig Notaro to the recently crowned prince of weird Julio Torres. But the most exciting performance comes from alt-comedy darling Patti Harrison, who makes an understated splash in her first leading film role. As a recurring presence on TV shows like “Shrill” and “Search Party” and a writer for “Big Mouth,” Harrison’s stand-up is marked by a droll deadpan that borders on antagonistic. That blasé sensibility is rebranded in “Together Together” as a subdued ambivalence that works for the character’s arrested emotional development. Unfortunately, Harrison is the brightest point in “Together Together,” which

Exclusive: PEN15 co-creator and star Anna Konkle’s latest memoir The Sane One has landed at Random House in a highly competitive situation.
In the book she tells the story of growing up in a dysfunctional household, with parents who were separated but chose to remain living under the same roof on opposite sides of the house. It’s territory that Konkle has mined previously on her critically acclaimed Hulu series PEN15, for which she received an Emmy nomination for writing and won the Gotham Award for Breakthrough Series.
Inspired by such memoirs as Running with Scissors, The Sane One also explores Konkle’s reconciliation with her father on his deathbed as she grapples with her pregnancy, and the mental health awakening which reconnects her with the family she’d once tried to leave.
Onscreen, Konkle will be seen in the feature Together Together which premieres at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival,...

In her meditations on fame, Emily Dickinson deemed it to be “a fickle food.” The second season of Apple TV Plus’ series on the famous poet is all about Emily getting a taste.
After a first season which saw Emily (played by Hailee Steinfeld) tussle with her father over her aspirations to become a published writer, Season 2 of “Dickinson” explores whether or not Emily is prepared for or is fully aware of the consequences that come with being published.
“It’s the daunting idea and outcome of possible fame and attention that she’s never experienced before,” says Steinfeld. “She goes on this search for answers to these questions of, what is fame and is fame something I even want? Is it something I can get rid of once I have it?”

America might not be going into the office, but they’re getting their fill of watercooler drama via “The Office.”
For the week of Dec. 7, the cringe comedy and mockumentary about the lives of office employees at a drab Pennsylvanian paper blasted past the mysterious Mandalorian and weirdly endearing Grogu, settling into first place in Nielsen’s Top 10 SVOD programs list. It is the seventh time “The Office” takes the gold, a record-breaker.
“The Office” was watched for an approximate total of 1.3 billion minutes that week across its 192 episodes (possibly due to Netflix users hoping to get all of their Michael Scott best moments in before the sitcom left the platform for Peacock at the end of the 2020), while “The Mandalorian” scored a total of around 1 billion minutes of viewing time. It should be noted that the “Star Wars” spinoff series was the only non-Netflix offering on the list this week,...

The Office, which now streams exclusively on NBCUniversal’s Peacock, gained momentum in its final days on Netflix, according to the latest U.S. streaming numbers from Nielsen.

It was the seventh No. 1 finish for the show since Nielsen initiated the streaming chart last summer. Have we ever been in more need of a laugh than in 2020? Amidst a historic global pandemic, a tumultuous American political election, civil unrest, wildfires, Murder Horne… alright, you get the picture. 2020 has been the pits, man. Thankfully, this year from hell featured some bright spots on television, even if rays of sunshine were sorely lacking in reality.
If the shows on our list weren’t making us laugh, we would have been ugly-crying since March. While we were all locked in our homes, we got reacclimated with the Warner Brothers (and sister), said goodbye to BoJack Horseman, and met regular human bartender Jackie Daytona, making quarantine a bit more bearable, if only in 30 minute increments. From brand new series like How To with John Wilson, to swan songs for Den of Geek favorites like Schitt’s Creek, TV comedies in 2020 kept us cackling through the chaos.

2020 has been a rocky year for almost everybody, but Ayo Edebiri is finishing strong. She was cast to voice Missy Foreman-Greenwald in the animated series Big Mouth after the previous voice actress, Jenny Slate, decided to step down. Not only is this a huge opportunity for Ayo and her career, but it’s also a chance for the character to have a new beginning. Although she is a relative newcomer to the entertainment industry, Ayo is more than ready to rise to the occasion. Based on what we’ve seen from her so far, there’s a very good chance we’re going

Objectively speaking, I am a massive fan of Big Mouth and have reviewed the show since the first season in 2017. But, for those of you who have not heard of this show before, it’s an animated mature comedy about children going through puberty… Which sounds like it shouldn’t work (and at times does become uncomfortable to watch but more on that later) but it does and will have you laughing throughout! It has been over a year since the last season if this show and many people – myself included – have been eagerly waiting to see what will happen to the character in the future. Despite personal affection towards the show as a professional, if I do say so myself, I have to review the series subjectively while considering the topics it covers, comedy used and overall performance of the show, so that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

Amid a wider conversation within the entertainment industry about representation, the past year has seen some signs of change in its animation sector, both onscreen and off. From the recasting of biracial characters with Bipoc voice actors on Netflix’s Big Mouth and Apple TV+’s Central Park, to recruiting more diverse animation artists via Instagram, efforts to be more inclusive have increased in 2020. But what has been the impact? To answer this question, THR invited creative and executive professionals within the animation community to a group discussion conducted remotely Nov. 2. Prior to “Big Mouth” Season 4, Lola was just another Nick Kroll to me. The crass class bully is one of at least 18 characters (!!) voiced by the series co-creator, and the whiny vocal fry he channels while playing this atypical mean girl does little to mask his typical “rich dick” schtick. Nor should it. Lola’s abrasive behavior is all the more intimidating (and hilarious) thanks to the furious baritone powering her point of view. Kroll is at one with Lola, just as he is with Maurice (the Hormone Monster) or Nick (who’s based on Kroll as a young boy).
Still, Lola rarely reached the glorious heights of those guys. She often felt like a necessary pseudo-antagonist for the show’s empathetic leads more than a flesh-and-blood child of her own (parents’) making. That is, until Season 4. Whether it’s Lola’s uniquely rich and terrifying backstory or her fateful...

It’s sounding as though we’re going to definitely see a fifth and even a sixth season of Big Mouth since the idea has continued to roll along and the fifth and sixth seasons were already being talked about before season 4 was unveiled and set loose. Those that have been watching the show are no doubt going to be psyched to learn that there are at least two more seasons coming, especially since Netflix has a reputation for canceling shows after people really get used to them. At this time there’s no word as to a cancelation, which is good

There’s a scene in the third episode of I May Destroy You, Michaela Coel’s dizzying exploration of sex and consent, where Arabella (played by Coel) is fooling around with Biaggio (Marouane Zotti), a ne’er-do-well Italian drug dealer. Just before they’re about to hook up, she warns him that she’s on her period, but he’s unfazed. He takes out her tampon and sets it aside… at which point his attention turns to a clump of blood on the bedspread. “What’s that?” he asks her,...

What better way to start the week than with an hourlong meditation? Well, that may not be the case when interrupted by the voices of the anxious gang from Netflix’s “Big Mouth,” like Maury the Hormone Monster, Lola and Coach Steve.
Monday afternoon’s virtual “‘Big Mouth’ Misguided Meditation” kicked off with soothing tunes from bowl-like instruments. But the comforting atmosphere was quickly interrupted by hosts and “Big Mouth” voice actors Nick Kroll and Jason Mantzoukas, when Kroll said, “Just watching the person manipulate the bowls was relaxing — just to see them stoke the bowls, just to get their hands dirty on the bowl, producing those beautiful, relaxing sounds.”
This chaos was exacerbated by Maria Bamford, who joined the duo to voice their inner anxieties during the pandemic. Bamford, the voice of Tito the Anxiety Mosquito in the series, told guests to “try not to pick up on how...

As this past week was the first week of December, Netflix got things rolling with the usual glut of new titles. It’s easy to miss everything that went up on the streaming giant over the past seven days, so we’ve compiled a handy recap of every single movie and TV show that dropped from Monday, November 30th to Sunday, December 6th. In total, that’s 58 new additions.
The 1st obviously delivered the bulk of the haul, serving up a ton of fresh films to keep you entertained as we begin the festive season. Among the highlights was the original Jurassic Park and one of its sequels and if you missed them at the beginning of the week, you can also catch the likes of romcom 50 First Dates, animated film Monster House and the one and only E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. As for TV shows, all of Stargate was likewise added the same day.

John Mulaney doesn’t look like much of a threat to national security, but a joke he told last February on Saturday Night Live nonetheless got him a visit from the Secret Service.
Mulaney, whose Big Mouth series returns to Netflix on Friday, said on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night that because of the joke about the assassination of Julius Caesar, he now has a Secret Service file.
He told the joke while hosting the Feb. 29 SNL episode: “Leap Year began in the year 45 B.C. under Julius Caesar. This is true. Another thing that happened under Julius Caesar was he was such a powerful maniac that all the senators grabbed knives and they stabbed him to death. This Big Mouth season 4 review is based on all 10 episodes and contains no spoilers.
Part of the appeal of animated series is that characters can remain the same age and exist in a place of stasis that’s impossible in live-action. Netflix’s Big Mouth, however, is one of the few animated series that allows its characters to actually grow older because these changes are fundamental to the types of stories it tells. Big Mouth’s characters are at a sensitive age where a year can feel like a lifetime.
This passage of time allows Big Mouth to feel fresh and gain a greater level of depth in its characters and storytelling, even if it’s still an absurdist comedy that frequently escapes into fantasy. The year is almost over. The Hargreeves kids have saved the world and Beth Harmon has checkmated her last opponent. But in its new releases for December 2020, Netflix still has some tricks up its sleeve.
For starters, Netflix is ending this most curious year with some promising original films. David Fincher’s long-awaited Mank arrives on Dec. 4 to fill us in on the story of Citizen Kane‘s screenwriter. Then on Dec. 11, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and James Corden do their best musical impression with The Prom. Chadwick Boseman’s final film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom debuts on Dec. 18. Then George Clooney rounds out the month with The Midnight Sky on Dec. 23.
But of course, it’s in the original series realm where Netflix does most of its work. The biggest one comes at month’s end this December. The final season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premieres on New Year’s Eve.
